Bloody great car - I'm super jealous of Jon - and fantastic review as ever Matt. I do think though that a small minority of people commenting either haven't actually watched the video and/or have totally missed the point and its purpose. They certainly haven't driven a 400hp one!

Never really been a VW Fan, but a R Model would be a nice practical choice. At least my Skoda Fabia Base Model has a bit of R Heritage in it... The same exact indicator and wiper stalks!

It's very interesting how quiet the estate version is on the outside, virtually nothing giving the performance potential away. That and the standard-fit DSG really goes to show how orientated towards police use the estate R really was...

I have Golf and travel all over Scotland and adaptive cruise is a must on a long run - the radar is in the VW badge now but older Golfs have them under the number plate. No need to always reset cruise when another motorist passes you then pulls in directly in front of you. The systems just brakes for you and you can chill :)

Hi Matt,for a Golf R estate it's pretty rapid,it does look subtle on the outside but when you give it the gas,don't it go,cool review.

It's not just the R that has radar adaptive cruise control. My 2013 1.4TSI SE has the same system. It also has all the steering wheel buttons too. The one thing it doesn't have is the flappy paddles for the DSG, but I very rarely use the tip-tronic function so don't mind. The Auto-Hold function is not just a hill-start feature. It keeps all four brakes engaged when you come to a stop at a junction or in a traffic jam (completely separate to the electric handbrake which operates motors at the rear wheels), and disengages when you pull away (obvs).

I reckon the estate is the best variant of the Golf R. Given the press reviews, I thought I'd like one but having been in a couple I wasn't much of a fan of the DSG and Sound Activator sounding like a computer game and that piano black all over the interior just looked tacky. Pretty noisy from a road noise point of view as well. Very capable though! I'd probably choose a SEAT Leon Cupra R ST instead, basically the same thing but looks a bit more interesting.

Very discreet and stealthy fast wagon only recognisable to those who know. I keep getting caught out by the newer R-Line Golfs that to me on first glance look sportier than they are! Have driven a MK6 R on road & track and bet this MK7 is an absolute treat!

Great video as always. I do like the MK7 Golf estate and this one just makes them look even better. So which is best, this or the Audi you drove the other week and Goodwood? I like the interior of this too.

This is cool, a fast all wheel drive estate. I travel to work in my friend's 2019 Golf R Design diesel. I love the way that the rear seats are moulded to support you at the sides. I have to confess that I feel no emotion for Golfs so I watched Joseph Lloyd's 1989 Nissan Sunny review first. Sorry Matt.

I think the best car for being an understated performance car is the Audi S4 B8. With its standard alloys in standard trim, the only thing which gave it away was the 4 exhaust outlets and the S4 badges.

I really like understated fast sleepers. Mk1, 2, 4, 6 & 7 are nice, the 3, 5 and 8 where not so nice in my opinion. Except the VR6 and Mk5 GTI and R32. But rather have the A3 8V RS3 saloon because: 5 cylinder! Great video of a great car, thanks Matt.

I went from a Golf Gti Mk7 pp dsg to a Seat Cupra ST . The Cupra is basically the same as a Golf R . The better car on back lanes, in my opinion , is the Gti .It’s just that bit lighter and therefore more nimble . The mechanical LSD is very important in the Gti as it controls traction really well. But the four wheel drive does have its benefits in cold damp conditions . They are both superb cars. I do like it that the Cupra is even less recognised as a performance car than the Gti or R . The exception being Fiesta ST drivers who seem to get a dose of red mist as soon as they see one !!

Another great video. I think these cars are great all rounders if you don't really care about cars i.e. steering feel, engine noise, character etc. In my experience, the interiors and mechanicals aren't as well built as people perceive them to be. There's a lot of cheap plastics and cost cutting in that interior.

I’ve got the new Passat R line estate in lapiz blue, optional 19 inch wheels and it’s lovely and looks great - haven’t seen another either. Sadly only the 1.5 tsi engine though - it’s more than adequate and looks a lot quicker than it is but I do find myself wishing it was a little less show and a bit more go. Hopefully VW do a ‘quick’ Passat version one day (other than the quick diesels - yawn) - fingers crossed

Wanted my mate to go for the 1.5 R Line Golf but he went default for the 2.0 TDI 150. Do you think the 1.5 would be more lively in the Golf hatch?

@@seancooke4127 I wouldnt have gone diesel - i would have gone for the 1.5 tsi petrol - it picks up better, sounds better and is much better suited to a smaller car in my opinion - the 0-60 is fairly respectable too

@@Fastwunz knew it would be better. Still he likes the diesel. I would have went 1.5, unless towing duties were required. In which case turbo diesel, but not Golf turbo diesel. It would be Passat Estate or possibly Tiguan, though not a fan of SUVs.

They do make a fast one. I have the BiTDi which is a 240 bhp 4 motion. Mapped to 275bhp. It's a golf r catcher.

GTI Clubsport is more my cup of tea! The standard GTI & R are so bland compared to a Megane RS or Civic Type R, plus lacking most of the trick gubbins the competition has, it's quite remarkable VW can get away with giving you less for as much or more money!

@@mehrzahl2219 this is a late TSI lump which is pretty much bullet proof. Only problem seems to be the plastic thermostat housing. The 6 speed DSG is also well proven.

@@jimmyjt16 every marque has weak spots, thermostat and water pump on the ea888 are definitely a couple but the DSG if serviced as it should be and gearbox oil allowed to warm up is very reliable, considering the amount sold

Manual Rs are pretty niche so it actually makes sense really, anyone tgat knocks the DSG probably hasn't spent much time driving one, not perfect by any means but it's fantastic

I think of it as more of a 206TSI 4Motion than a "R" myself. :) A keen driver would be better served by a GTI Clubsport, which comes with more responsive suspension, sportier seats, no power-sapping AWD, better aero etc.

So, a factory changes mechanical parts of the engine to get additional 40hp. Owner just remaps it for an additional 100hp. Not sure that's a good idea. xD

They are tough motors, they know what they can make but only tease it up there over time so they've got upgrades for the future!
