They sold the 6-speed in NA also, he just didn't review one, to be honest he probably went with the cvt for this video since it serves the tone and agenda of this video better. It’s not powerful, but fun as hell. Being able to high rev (great with a modified exaust) going from 0-55 without worrying of getting a ticket is nice. Definitely one of my favorite vehicles. I was thinking about picking one of these up as my commuting appliance. I agree it looks good, the price was right, I think what killed it for me was I once owned a B16 swapped CRX (eventually just rusted out), even though I test drove a 6-speed and it was fun and did everything I needed from it, there was just a design by committee wrongness to the car, like I was in a bizarro version of the CRX of yesteryear. So if compromises were to be made I fell on the sword and just bought a gen 2 Chevy Volt (before the prices shot up). I love that thing. Lots of torque (for what it is), plenty of room with the seats down (took home a 165cm tv from Costco), I plug in at home/work so I might use about 40L of gas a year (mountain/beach trips). Then I just built a dedicated track day car so I can keep the compromises to a minimum.

"Well actually," it's pretty neat with a manual. The electric motor clears out the flat spots and it's eager to rev in sport mode. Like a high tec Miata with more weight and worse suspension. It's fun and easy to live with if you can get over the terrible rearward visibility and unsupportive seats. The read storage bench thing makes for nifty discrete storage and it's got a stock alarm that'll go off if someone smashes your window. Aside from the pricey potential repairs I dodged when I sold it, I was a bit sad to let it go.

I bought my 2013 CR-Z in August 2014 and it was like Priceline..."name your own price!". It was the six-speed and I taught my daughter to drive a stick with this car...which she now owns. This car should have had an Si line that got rid of the drive modes, the S+, and added stiffer springs. Honda definitely tried to make too many compromises which muddled the car's mission, but I really enjoyed the hell out of throwing it around and I did manage just under 40mpg for the five years I drove it. It made me even more appreciative of what my ND2 delivers in terms of driving joy.

As a CR-Z owner for the last four years I can confidently tell you that you did both yourself and the car an enormous disservice by not driving a manual version. I’ve got a 2014 6MT you’re welcome to test if you ever make it to Iowa. The only thing it lacks compared to a 2016 is a couple tech features and the final MY’s styling.. but what it lacks there it makes up for in driving feel. It was never meant to be the fastest machine on the road, and it was never meant to be the most fuel efficient. But of the quicker cars in Honda’s lineup, it’s the most fuel efficient. And of the fuel efficient cars, it’s the fastest. It’s a car built around compromise which doesn’t appear to everyone. But everyone I’ve ever met with one absolutely loves them. When I lived in southern Minnesota, I once met a man with a garage full of Ferraris and other exotics. He dailied a CR-Z. They’re wonderful cars and in ten years when it’s worth 2x what I paid for it with 5x as many miles.. I’ll be laughing at everyone who dogged on them 😋

This was the first car I ever bought. I live in the UK so I had the backseats. This is honestly a really fun little car in manual. But even though there is no VTEC this car is probably the funnest when you're revving the living hell out of it. It also has a driver focused cockpit similar to a s2000 which is pretty cool and the same push start as them as well. Also the original design I would say still looks really modern and same with the dash I think it was pretty ahead of its time. I think a lot of reviewers miss that this car actually makes a lot of sense to a new driver. It was at the time I bought it pretty cheap used and insurance premiums were pretty low and gave you that low down sporty feeling but without the power that would scare your insurer and your parents.

to be fair to the CR-Z, the CR-X also has *a lot* of these problems if you take off the rose-tinted glasses. the CR-X was underpowered with its 1.5/1.6 SOHC [compared to the competition, who had DOHC higher-displacement motors that made more power], the headroom was lacking, and why didn't it have rear seats? lo and behold, the lack of power is suddenly a good thing now (because slow car fast!), and everything else can be attributed to quirky honda in the 90s just trying to make their mark... the CR-Z makes the same mistakes honda did in the 90s. it's the perfect homage - we never got the mythical VTEC B16, or rear seats in our CR-Xs.

I had a 2011 until 2016, couldn't ask for a better commuter car. The CVT was well programmed and averaged upper 40 mpg lifetime. The CR-Z loved the slow-'n-roll traffic on 422 where it would easily get mid 50's on my commute. If it were 2011 I'd buy it again, because the only options for great mileage back then were the CR-Z, Insight, or Prius.

This review is ironic because I tried emailing you guys three times to the email address in one of the videos that was listed and you never responded. I have a 2015 CR-Z (with a manual) that you could have reviewed. I admit that this car disappointed at the time since people were expecting more from it, but if you take it for what it is, its an all right car. Also, you might want to change the name of the video to 2016 Honda CR-Z since you are driving one that is in Aegean Blue (the only year that color was made). I know you'll change it. Interesting review, but what could have been if you had contacted me sooner. It is what it is.

I had one for a while when I was in college! I loved it dearly. Yeah it sucks, it's flawed, but where Mr. R saw these as faults I thought it added a lot of charm. It's not at all a perfect car, I'm not even sure it was a good car, but I had a great time driving it. I went to college in the mountains in Virginia and the hills destroyed the shitty CVT. I bought one of these new in 2014. EX trim w/CVT and navigation. Bought it to be a reliable and efficient yet slightly funky daily driver and not for sportiness. Other car I had at the time and was also my daily was a 1992 Dodge Stealth RT/TT, which was fast and fun but thirsty, complex, and temperamental. The CR-Z did the job just fine. Averaged 40mpg, decent cargo space with the hatchback, quick enough to not be a hazard (not fast, though), and was a surprisingly decent highway car. Put over 60,000 trouble free miles on it. Traded it in two years ago for a nondescript white Honda hybrid sedan. I still sometimes walk by my own car in a parking lot but the CR-Z was hard to miss. I know, TLDR, CSB. Mr. Regular was right to roast it as missing expectations as the "spiritual successor to the CR-X" but I think it will find its niche in the future. I never regretted getting it and still miss it a little.

Ahh the ole CVT blues... I have one in my Fusion. Every highway acceleration sounds like a million bees collectively groaning they have to be awoken to propel my automotive equivalent of a bar of soap down the road at highway speeds. The pain I have within my soul as an automotive enthusiast driving a soul-sucking CVT on my commute has relegated me to an almost Napoleonic level of exile from the car community. As I drive my automotive island of St. Helena, I remember the good times I've had with fun cars in the past. The smooth, short throw gear changes of my Barton shifter are all but a fond memory. Someday I might return from this hell, but the reality of the fact is that I can't have a fun car right now AND save money. Oh right, this was a video of a Honda CR-Z. hehe tiny car go brrrrr

@@JakeHercules Its still the same CVT engine, I just added the discontinued Sprintex SC on it and got it professionally tuned using Hondata. Some people on the CR-Z forums had done the same thing with their CVT, some even installed the SC on the 6MT versions. The CR-Z can be a lot of fun if modified and tuned properly, it still won't be "fast" unless you swap out the hybrid engine with a K20 or k24 obviously.

Dear god I needed that little lens for traffic lights in my Miata. I instantly knew the lean and neck crane you described from when I drove that thing. I have a soft spot for these things. In manual of course, but something about the style and the unabashedly two-seater-ed-ness of it all makes it more interesting than a Fit for example. I think I could have ended up with one if they had dropped in price a little more at the time, but they seem to hold onto value better than most generic hondas. Absolutely brutal video by the way. I hope I can get eviscerated like this sometime by you, mr. Regular. Oh wait, you don’t swing both ways…

Gas only mt would have been pretty great and could have had more cargo room and visibility. What gives Honda?

I remember in the mid 2000s when Honda and Toyota were having their hybrid war. It was the 1st gen Prius vs the 1st gen Insight. The Prius was a hybrid which used electric motors as the primary mover of the wheels but the engine would come on to provide assistance when the battery was low or power was needed. The Prius could run EV only if it had enough battery power and it was in an environment where much use of regen braking was present. The Insight was the other way around in which it used electric motor to assist when the engine was the prime mover. The motor was there only to fill in a hole of power and allow for a less powerful but more efficient engine to be used. I believe (and somebody correct me if I am wrong) the earlier Insights didn't have an EV only operation. At the end of it the Prius proved to be the superior hybrid. It used the engine only when needed and the system is designed to squeeze as much electric power as possible. New Honda hybrids now use the same setup as Toyota hybrids.
@tynowak
@tynowak Жыл бұрын
I have a first gen Insight. You are correct. The ICE engine is running all the time while driving. As the name implies, it acts as an electric assist for the gasoline engine, providing additional horsepower when needed. Later this year I'll be upgrading the Ni-MH battery pack to Lithium, which will allow for much more power from the electric motor and allow me to drive with the gas engine at "idle" as long as the lithium charge lasts.
