WOW this was a cool case study, Bernie! Now my question is why that car needed a fuel line repair to begin with? And that is the biggest glass beaker I have seen in my entire life haha! You're a mad scientist, Bernie!! :)

Probably because the "brakes and suspension" mechanic used his "trusty ol pry bar" to help himself when R&R one of the 2 new high pressure fuel pumps that were installed(just like he damaged the harness for rail sensor, when prying to change the alternator). Probably when was using this mighty suspension repair tool he damaged the line. I wonder when pump is working against restriction(also a clogged filter) will the amps for the pump go up ? i think yes. 🍻

This is, by far, the most impressive diagnostic video I have ever seen. I can assure you that 99% of all mechanics don't come close to this. Most everyone is a part thrower by comparison. I wish all mechanics learned things at an engineering level.

Can you imagine having Bernie as a instructor from day one like the 1st day that you started learning anything to do with mechanics or automobiles ? Almost everything that he talks about is stated as an absolute because he knows Almost everything there is to know about cars. Anyone that has been in the field for a good amount of time knows that there is no way Humanly possible to know everything about every car, But I think that Bernie knows as much as anyone could possibly know about Automobiles. I just keep coming back to how many things I learned the hard wayAs a junior tech... How many things I learned That were wrong and I had to go back and rewrite this information in my head which is not easy to do. So I can only imagine if from day one I weren't everything the correct way and had everything explained down to the smallest detail on theory of operation, why components fail the way they do etc... It blows my mind every time I watch one of his videos the amount of information that he has Is incredible. I guess that is the product of i think about 35 years of experience put into a 30 or 45 minute video. Thank you Bernie for the time you put into these videos, and thank you for your contribution to the automotive field as a whole. I know there's thousands of techs who have benefited from your instruction and knowledge.

Bernie, words fail me, but not you. The way you gathered data! The 'understanding' from the data! And the discussion of DC motors, using powers and grounds is priceless. I would say 'one of your best ever' but heck, they're all good. So, when the high pressure pump output dropped did the hp pump go into cavitation because of the low input pressure?

Great Case Study…If the first shop just went back to basics and checked if the high pressure pump was getting what it needed, conduct a pressure and volume test like you did, well, I don’t have to say it. I started my career in the late 80s when we did a fuel volume test at the carburetor, rule of thumb was 1/2 pint in 15 seconds. Overall, the other shops pain was our gain though.

What a great diagnostic lesson! Few techs have the knowledge or skills to troubleshoot electrical/electronic issues. A scan tool is not enough to always pinpoint where the problem lies. Until we know how to use a oscilloscope we are just running around in circles. You showed how the other shops simply assumed that it was a component that was at fault. Your logical approach was able to verify what was working properly & what was not. A great video that I learned a lot from!

This poor car had parts thrown at it all because of mechanics who worked on it creating the problems. Not sure why anyone would try to repair a fuel line... It seems safe to say that, since the fuel rail pressure sensor was dropping out, the ECM was making up its own value for the fuel rail pressure at times, based on other data and what it "expected" the pressure to be. Just shows that scan tools can burn you sometimes with substituted values if you don't look deeper into the problem.
