Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg is in New Mexico with Leupold's Tim Lesser, VP of Product Development. This is the exact episode as aired on Sportsman Channel; Season 5, Episode 3.
In this hunt, they are hunting a Wilderness Area burn where elk are aplenty. The challenge comes in the difficult terrain and the high winds that can persist at 10,000'.
Randy takes the production risk to let Tim and cameraman, Tyler Johnerson, go on a stalk for a bull while Randy stays across the canyon to keep an eye for the elk sneaking out the bottom. The bull is bedded and Tyler rolls rocks to get this bull up and exposed for a shot.
The end result is a great public land bull for Tim. It took two days to retrieve the bull, but the memories and meat are worth every bit of it.
Thanks for watching.

Love the lesson: expect that it is going to be so hard to hunt elk on public land, that you are going to be pushed to the edge of quitting. That's fantastic! Thanks and thanks to Tim Lesser!

Love how you tell it like it is... You need a strong mindset, lots of miles of walking, and yes there will be work involved! Your episodes are some of the best at showing the reality of hunting, keep up the fantastic work! Your camera guys and editors do an incredible job... and the hunters aren't half bad either!!! Keep'em coming!

Nice shot! That .338 packs a punch! I have noticed a lot of guest hunters use a .338 on the show and this one with a muzzle brake. I recall Randy saying he uses a .308 and if you use a muzzle brake on a large caliber rifle you should probably use a smaller caliber. Just found that interesting. Another great video though! I love watching Randy!

A lot of motivation and inspiration come from you buddy. My dad and I watch your videos everyday. He was raised on hunting and he did the same for me. It’s great to watch an ethical hunter and to learn from the amount of knowledge you have. Thank you 🙏🏻 if you ever come up to Washington that’d be great to see you out in the public land wilderness

Plenty are not successful. Depends on the year. Some years it seems we get a lot of lucky breaks. Years like 2020, it seems we can't catch a break. This season of 2020 will be our toughest year ever, by a long margin.

And I also agree with most comments regarding the day to day episodes. You really got something here. As an avid waterfowl hunter, I work my butt off to put together a successful rewarding hunt. I am absolutely turned off by hunting media. The ads, the focus on "limits" the horrible editing. It is such a relief watching you put together an adventure in reality. Truly inspiring. One day I hope I can muster the ambition to cross the country and attempt to kill an incredible animal for the eating. In the mean time ill stick to my canvasbacks and whitetails. Thank you for bustin your ass for us.

Randy, I'm getting ready to order a leupold scope for my howa 1500 .308. When you are ordering your cds dials do you take a certain amount of velocity off for the 20" barrel or do you actually chronograph? If you do chronograph, what would you say the average velocity difference is between what the factory says and what you actually see at the muzzle?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
Chrono, if at all possible. The change for the 20" barrel is very low. You will be surprised. I see less than 25 fps difference.

Did you choose this spot not only because it wilderness but also because it was in a burn. Also is this as unit that requires a lot of preference points or and easily accessible hunt for everyone?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 6 жыл бұрын
It was chosen first because it is roadless. Doesn't have to be designated Wilderness, so long as the terrain prevents easy access with "motors." Once the unit is chosen, then this spot was picked because it has a burn. New Mexico does not have a point system. All elk units are on a draw in NM.

Randy, I have another question for ya regarding this hunt; Are there any Grouse in that area? I have never really given it much thought, but if there are blue grouse in that area, I may have to bring a shotgun along when out there on my deer hunt. I know Ive seen plenty of turkey out there, but cant seem to remember ever coming across any grouse, but than again....I was targeting below 8500 feet. From what I read, the blues prefer the higher altitudes, so I may have been below them. Hope you see and can assist with this question. Thanks!

Well I hope that don't keep ya from coming back! Hope to see ya out there sometime and say hi if I'm lucky enough to have a tag at the same time you do...LOL. I want to take a moment to say thank you Randy. Your info and tips have me looking for opportunities that I haven't considered before. I got the Onx maps on my phone and that got me wondering about antelope after watching your latest video (day by day) which is at day 2 so far. So now I may try to apply in NM for an antelope tag. Seems that they assign you to a specific location or ranch though for the area I may apply in. Also considering taking off and heading to Colorado next year for an OTC elk hunt. That statement you made about "running out of health" really hit home for me at 48. Thank you so much for passing on that SOUND advice! We will be NM" for the Mule deer season again this year...so we will see what happens. The deer densities are so low compared to elk in the area, but we are going to get some mud on the boots get some thin clean air in our lungs and see what happens!

Maybe a dumb question but why does forest service require a permit to film a wilderness hunt?
@mrboudia
@mrboudia 7 жыл бұрын
Cities, Counties, and the Federal Government own the copyright to the land that they control. It's no different to why Studios shoot in far off countries to avoid those fees and taxes. If you're going to make money off of those lands through an image, you have to purchase a permit to do so. I'm a Producer for a living and if they can prove through 1 identifiable shot that you filmed in an area that required that permit, you could be sitting on a $100,000 fine immediately. This goes for a Private property as well but it's opened ended. That's why it's easier to just pay the owner a negotiated fee upfront for them to release the use of their property for an established time and have it signed and agreed upon upfront. The fact that Randy mentioned in the episode is a very smart move.
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
All Federal lands require a filming permit. Many TV shows you see filmed on public land see that as a big hurdle and often hope for forgiveness rather than seeking permission. In my ten years of filming TV, I spent over $140,000 on public land film permits. I wish the compliance rate was higher. If you see a show filmed in the Wilderness Areas, unless they have went through all the hoops I jump through, odds are they are hoping for forgiveness. Thanks for watching.

Randy Newberg, Hunter Oregon is getting extremely tough with this type of stuff. I shot a commercial for a boat brand on a known piece of water. It aired for one day and I was contacted to produce copies of the permits the following day. You have a great show and I'm glad to hear that you've covered your bases. Good Luck on future shows!
@Daniel_Bradford
@Daniel_Bradford 7 жыл бұрын
Its uncle sam squeezing any money out of you that they can. Even though they hold that land in trust for the public, you still have to pay them to film on it which is stupid. Randy is covering his bases but that is one of those stupid laws that should be struck down.
