Hunting New Mexico elk with Randy Newberg, Bruce Pettet (CEO of Leupold Optics) takes a great public land bull. In this backcountry hunt, Randy explains how Roadless and Wilderness areas are the reservoir for hunting outside the Wilderness areas.
Bruce has the tag. Randy is along for adventure. And adventures comes in a big dose on this hunt.
This hunt was Episode 1 from Season 4 of Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg.

No hunt can or will ever compare with a backcountry public land hunt. No frill, no fluff, just wild country for miles and miles. And most importantly to me atleast there's no expectation of success. Also love the line "if it looks like a person wouldn't go there, that's where the elk are". My buddies hate hunting with me because my philosophy is "I go absolutely wherever the elk would go".

At 14:34, that is an amazing quality of camera technology! The way it focused in on the elk but backed all the way off from behind their heads shows some excllent quality!

Man, now that's hunting! I'm trying to find a hunting partner that's willing to go to those extremes to find the big guys, and just for the experience. Still looking, as most won't walk farther than a mile from the truck or quad. But I'll find em. Or just make sure I've got the right gear to go myself. It gets boring when you go out and the hunt is honestly just to easy. Most of my hunting buds, hunt the same units, same ground, same sweet spots. Gets really boring when you know exactly where they are going to be. I'm getting into Archery hunting for deer, to add onto the challenge. And last preseason I headed out into the middle of no where and found some massive herds of Elk, and some Giants. But so far yet to find someone willing to come that far out there on foot. But I've been putting the word out on forums, in AB, and hopefully find a good partner. Cheers Randy, best hunting show out there. And your ethics are impeccable!

This was so fun to watch, such a messy hole, but filled with Elk. Just fabulous. But that big boy at the 10 min mark isn't the same Bull that Bruce Shot. First thing I noticed when he took aim at that great bull that he did shoot. I was lime "wha..that's not him..". - Epic hunt nonetheless!

Correct, and good eyes. When we got there, the big boy, having that sixth sense many old bulls/bucks have, had disappeared. Seeing this other bull was a good one, Bruce was happy to take him.

I live in nm and plan on doing my first hunt next year, what unit do you recommend I apply for I love the way you hunt getting away from the roads and stuff, a lot of people I have talked to said this state has been ruined by poachers but the elk population seem to be healthy from the looks of this video
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
I would apply for a really difficult-to-draw unit as a first choice, a moderately difficult unit as my second choice, and an easier unit as my first choice. Even the easier-to-draw units in NM provide some great hunting. The elk numbers in NM are as good as any state I hunt. Don't listen to the naysayers; apply for a tag, go hunting, and have a great time. Good luck and thanks for watching.

That's a unit I've never elk hunted. Good luck. I would glass as much as possible. Bulls will be away from cows in their bachelor groups of 2-6. Look in the rough country that hunters avoid. Those are sanctuaries they use in the last season. Thanks for watching.

Randy Newberg, Hunter I first saw your show about 2-3 weeks ago and now I`ve almost seen every hunting episode😊.There is something more in your show compared to most other huntingshows. I can see a broader definition of the term hunting in your show; the reloading, the equipment, the psysical part, shooting, taking care of the meat but & most of all the people! It is so good to see the excitement in their &, of course, your eyes when you are hunting.There is a saying here in sweden that goes something like ”shared happiness is double the happiness” and I can see alot of it when you Hunt with your friends. Doing a show there is always a business part but I think it i important to balance the business with the huntingstory you tell. If you get the balance wrong it’s ”hard to see the forrest due to all of the trees”! I see hunting as a way of life, to share the moments and stories with good friends is what life is about. The other parts, equipment etc, helps us make the the trips enjoyable and contributes to the building of a experience that we can remember. I think you do the balancing act in a very good way, just like a finetuned reloading scale :). There is a lot in your shows that Can be aplicable on todays life and society. The main point, that I see it, is that you don’t get anything for free in life, you have to work for it and that’s what makes it all worth while! Unless you’re born with a silverspoon in your mouth, but thats another story 😄! Looking forward to more episodes! Sincerely Robert

Randy. I have watched a lot of different hunting shows on TV, KZfaq, etc and all of your series. I think this is one of my favorite episodes of yours and overall. Well done, an excellent story, buildup, background and narrative. Congrats! A side question: Once you spot a bull from a mile or more away and put them to bed. how do you mark the spot or plan on finding them once you leave the glassing location? I have only tried calling so I am curious how you find that bull again, especially outside of the rut. Thanks
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
I make mark of a nearby landmark that will give me a reference. I also mark the glassing location on my GPS and the landmark on my GPS, then use the "Go To" feature. It will get me within a very close distance. Before getting too close I check the wind and other aspects to make sure of the best approach angle.

With a .284 bullet, I would probably step up a few grains to 160, 165, or maybe even as high as 170 grain. Will get a better ballistic coefficient and penetration, without much changes in ballistic performance. If you are using a "soft point," I would use a Nosler Partition. Just curious as to how one can pack out meat over a couple of days ...is it because the weather is cool enough to keep it from spoiling ?!
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. We do it all the time. Hang it in the shade, in high quality game bags to keep dirt and insects off the meat, and you can hang it for quite a while without spoilage. Put it in the sun and all that changes.

WHAT PRICE RANGE SHOULD I EXPECT FOR A LANDOWNER UNIT WID TAG?
@Fresh_Tracks

Depends on the unit. Range seems to be $1,500 to $12,000.

@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 8 жыл бұрын
Out of respect for other hunters, we never give units. Just not fair to those who hunt an area or those who apply. If we were to give areas, it could cause a big influx of draw odds, hurting the odds of those who have traditionally applied to that unit. Hope that makes sense. Best of luck.

I've told people for years that the MOST important and often overlooked aspect of sucessful Elk hunting is physical condition. There's no way most "hunters" will survive the "thigh busters" canyons and draws at altitude. Just not gonna happen. I've seen "flatlanders" simply give up after only a couple of miles off trail. I was raised in Wyoming and raised hunting all sorts of game in all sorts of terrain. From Antelope in the Minuteman missile fields north of Cheyenne to the Big Horns, Snowy Range and Wind River mountains. You gotta be able to bust through that stuff all day just to get a shot...THEN the work starts. There are plenty of calibers, rifles, bullets, scopes etc...perfectly able to hunt elk with. There's only a single variable you can't purchase...YOU.

As stated in comments below, we don't tell people the units we hunt, as doing so would negatively impact those other hunters who apply or hunt there. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching.

I love you videos sir. They show people that you don't need money to kill the animal of your dreams. I was born and raised in Northeastern wyoming. I have hunted public land my whole life. Keep up the hard work. Also what pack do you use. I like the way you can strap your rifle under your arm. thanks

DID YALL DRAW A TAG? WHAT I UNDERSTAND FROM DEPT. OF WILDLIFE IF YOU PURCHASE A LANDOWNER TAG YOU CAN ALSO HUNT ANY PUBLIC LAND THAT IS IN THE UNIT THAT THE LANDOWNER TAG IS IN? DWF HAS A LIST OF LANDOWNERS AND THE NUMBER OF TAGS, BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW IF A PARTICULAR LANDOWNER HAS GOOD HUNTING?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
This was a unit-wide landowner voucher. Yes, if you get a unit-wide voucher, it allows you to hunt all public land, as we did, and the lands of all private landowners who are awarded unit-wide vouchers. I don't worry if the landowner has good hunting, as we always hunt the public land.

Hi Randy, would you take me on a hunt with you? I’ve been dreaming about hunting for a very long time but i have no clue where to start. I would need someone to show me how to do it. You’re my hope to get started. I’m located in Arizona but I’m willing to travel to wherever you’re at. Thanks

As you can imagine, I get hundreds of requests. Time constraints do not allow me to take any of those kind requests/invites. Arizona Game and Fish does have mentored hunting camps, where they teach hunting skills to new hunters. Might be worth looking into. Link here - www.azgfd.com/Hunting/MentoredCamps/

Never hunted elk if love to someday. I live on the east coast of Canada in the province of New Brunswick. Where would be the closest place for me to hunt elk. Oh yeah how does elk taste compared to deer and moose.
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 жыл бұрын
I like elk better than deer and equal to moose. The closest state would be Kentucky, but those are hard tags to draw. Besides that, closest would probably be Colorado.
