2016 Nissan Rogue full fluid change to all rotating sub systems. CVT oil change, not full drain and flush, transfer case (WHICH I CALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL THROUGHOUT THE VIDEO) duh, rear differential and engine oil. There was some debris on the rear differential magnet, but the oil looked good.
Plus a bonus peak at the end of the video showcasing the next whats next garage project!!!

Great video! fyi, There is a bolt next to the CVT pan that is facing you on about a 45 degree angle. That is the bolt you remove to set the level on the transmission while the engine is running and in neutral. Your way is much easier though, but for those that don't have a pan to measure the liquid. Thats what's used to set the level.

i dont know about a complete flush, but at least i would change the cvt paper filter thats right behind the oil cooler cover on the side of the gearbox. taking the oil pan out, cleaning the oil sucker filter (or changing it) and cleaning the metallic debris on the big magnets at the bottom of the pan would also be a good idea. usually there is a lot of material there on these nissan cvt. the rest of the job was perfect and really clean and neat!

Thanks for the video. Just FYI, if you don’t already know. One thing I’ve found out recently is, there is a (outside) CVT fluid filter, that you should change very 50k miles or so (base on my research). If you look from passenger side, towards the driver side, there is a cylindrical housing (4 bolts) just above the CVT fluid pan, towards the front of the car. I have it on my 2020 Rogue, I’d assume all the Rogue if this generation has one.

@@jonmo2694 based on my research, at around 50-60k miles, the external filter (not sure if you have to drain the fluid first, my guess is no), internal filter (dropping the pan), and a drain and fill should be performed - drain and fill can be done more often depending on the colour of the fluid.

Nice video discussing these fluid changes. Always start with loosening the fill plug first like you did just in case you run into trouble and can’t get those loose for some reason. That cap on the Nissan CVT fill port is really odd in my opinion, I guess they thought someone would pour an incorrect fluid perhaps. The CVT drain pan have two donut shaped magnets on Nissans that collect sludge and metal particles. Adds to the labor, but might be worthwhile to remove the pan and check/clean those magnets.

My Mom's 2017 doesn't have the notch to push the clip from the side. I guess Nissan and Jatco got wise to it. I can see them doing it to keep people from just dumping any old transmission fluid in these. I have read a couple horror stories of a shop using regular ATF in CVTs and it will damage them. I don't know how soon the damage shows up but I don't want to find out. When it comes to CVTs some people cringe and say it will not last long. Well, that is especially true if ATF is in there. Hopefully you are not far from home if a CVT fails because of that because it will make the entire trip an ordeal with getting it to a shop, paying for a new CVT (assuming it was not warrantied and incorrect fluid is NOT). It is both horribly inconvenient and expensive.

Although my car doesn't have a CVT it is a Volkswagen and the transmission fluid from them is just as insanely priced. It can be $25 or more for a liter of fluid depending on your vehicle. Then if you get the same spec fluid from a Porsche dealer (only difference is Porsche branding) it can be a lot more expensive still! There are often other brands that are what the fluid is. Pentosin is the supplier of Volkswagen's fluids from what I hear. I also heard Idemitsu makes the fluid Nissan uses.

I bough them because the metal ones we have for trucks don't go under far enough and they hit under the car. You can imagine that if you somehow got a car on those, you might damage the body some. Volkswagen transmission fluid is also really expensive at around $25 per liter. Then the same spec fluid from a Porsche (In a Porsche branded bottle) dealer will really cost you! How is that for a fluid that is really WS spec? I forgot how much it is from Porsche when I looked out of curiosity but it is considerably more expensive than $25. I think they only do it because they know that a sucker is born every minute. I wonder how many of them just go to the VW dealer and get the equivalent fluid instead. Then if you get a change done at a VW dealer it gets even worse with labor added.

@whatsnextgarage
@whatsnextgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Night storm, thanks so much for this comment!! I truly mean it!! You forced me to do research and find out the differences. I am 100% on board with your comment. First I have to say that Nissan recommends GL5 80w90 for the front and rear differential. Now to add more substance to your comment, GL4 has about 1/2 of the sulfur/phosphorus additive then GL5. What that additive does is build a wearable (sacrificial) layer between the meshing gear teeth. What you reference with softer material is true when they substitute GL5 for GL4 and the reason is the sacrificial layer is actually harder then the base metal of brass or other soft metal and allows a very tiny amount of that base metal to wear away instead of the sacrificial sulfur/phosphorus layer. So for DIY’ers doing fluid changes make sure you use OEM recommended lubricants in your vehicles. This link is where I found everything I paraphrased above. www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf

@@elangelmon the Dorman number is 097-134. I believe they are all 12mm. Which is the .44 id size. The silver one is a crush washer also like the copper. But I prefer to use copper whenever I can. And your rogue is a pretty popular rig so use the dorman number and you should be good to go. I typically reuse the washers without issue. But one of these times it’s gonna bite me. Good luck!!

When you drain the CVT fluid, does the temperature matter ? Can you drain it as cold and put it in there as cold ?
@whatsnextgarage
@whatsnextgarage 2 жыл бұрын
@jlin if your draining at the plug warmer is better, much like an engine oil change. Just remember to measure the amount of oil you remove, that way you can get it back close to oem fill level. Hope that answers your question! Have a great weekend.
@jponeill7432
@jponeill7432 Жыл бұрын
Agree with draining warm helps it flow faster, but tranny fluid volume is temp dependent. Since Nissan makes it difficult and not give you a dipstick to confirm level on refilling I would recommend you drain it warm, allow to cool to room temp, confirm volume drained, and refill with room temp fluid. PS thanks for the tutorial on removing the dipstick plug. I watched multiple versions, and every other one had either their hands or the radiator hose blocking the camera.

What's the cost of each of these oil changes?
@whatsnextgarage
@whatsnextgarage 2 жыл бұрын
$80 for the trans fluid, $40 for engine oil and filter and $14 for differential oil. So total was $134.

When I see vids of guys with failed CVTs and they are disassembling them the fluid is dark and like used motor oil. I am not sure how long it takes it to get that way but these are NOT lifetime fluids by any stretch of the imagination. Also they need to remember how complex these things are and change the fluid hopefully before anything happens. Waiting until there is an issue is almost waiting until it is too late and it is *doomed to fail*

How about SAE 5W-30?
@whatsnextgarage
@whatsnextgarage 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a tough question to answer. There are tons of factors that go into engine oils, namely 0w-20 vs 5w-30. Broadly, the oils viscosity you choose is affected by temperature and driving habits. Cold temps and normal driving conditions, the manufacturers recommended 0w-20 is good but high outside temps and aggressive or “hard” driving habits may warrant the 5w-30. 0w-20 provides a slightly thinner oil film of protection which “experts” say can produce better fuel economy. However many argue that it is so negligible that it shouldn’t be compared that way. Older high mileage vehicles may benefit from the 5w-30 due to its ability at temperature to have a thicker oil film on moving components. Always use the manufacturer recommended oil type called out in the owners manual. That’s the route I always go.

Yes, there is a sump filter you see when you drop the pan, and another filter up above that in it's own housing. There's not much info on the upper filter, not in the service schedule and no torque specs for the housing bolts; I don't think many people change those ones out.
