The 2016 Triumph Thruxton S is the less expensive Thruxton and the only one that comes in Competition Green which appears to trump Brembo and Ohlins.

First decent review of the Standard - thanks for that. Having test rode the R I absolutely fell in love with it, especially the engine's torquey performance and the bike's overall looks but have gone for the standard in black for a more retro-authentic look and also specced the cafe racer fairing - a very rare combo in the UK so far. This is my first new bike for about 16 years and my current steed is 18 years old, so I think the improvement will be noticeable even with the Nissins, TC and ABS! Whichever one folks go for they won't be disappointed.

Thanks for this video. The green is stunning. I took the R out last week and was really impressed. The engine is stonking and I loved the ride. I asked the dealer how many R's had been ordered - he said 22 but not one order for the standard bike! Have a look at the accessories for this, black ceramic pipes, racer screen and dual seat. Looks beautiful and practice.

The R model looks wrong with the gold and yellow suspension. Triumph should have specified it in black only.

This is the first review of the standard Thruxton I've seen so well done for that. This bike seems to be ignored by the bike press which is a great shame. In fact my local Triumph dealer said they've taken 23 orders for the Thruxton R compared to only 2 for the standard. They've had 8 orders for the T120.

I wanted the gloss black, bought the Matte Black R instead, tons of value added, no regrets.
@wozza598 жыл бұрын
+poit444 I can perfectly understand your decision. The price difference is quite small for all those extra goody suspension bits. It's a no brainier really.
@poit4448 жыл бұрын
yes sir, that's actually what the sales mgr said when I was ready to buy the gloss black knowing the GT's are great tires, and for me not being a track guy, it is plenty and a great bike. He said absolutely not, you get so mutated for the price and I quote "I can't have you riding around on a standard." In all fairness, he knows me well and he was absolutely correct. A car ran the light when I was on it 10 minutes, I was thankful for the Brembo's from that point on.

It was a mistake not to release the R in green as well. They should have left Red in the standard and green for the R. The silver is still my pick though.

Just traded in my explorer after testing the 'r' last week..fell in love, but got the standard in white because I think it looks classier. Just hope the brakes/ suspension are going to be adequate when I pick it up next week...

I actually prefer the look of this version, the Ohlins suspension is awesome, but the gold looks kind of weird on a retro bike. Also like how this one doesn't have the silly tank strap. Painted looks way better imho.

Thanks Cal Moto - I took delivery of the first R in Oregon (whoopdee, i know) and there never was a thought of a T120 or Standard Thruxton. I needed the cache of the Öhlins and all that, but I learned a lot from this video - Thought the S had just the two modes of RAIN and ROAD same as the T120, but the SPORT mode is where it's at, other than downtown traffic) and I didn't realize they shared the same HP motor. Personally, I like the glitzy bling of the polished clamp - Just gazing down on the gorgeous clocks, Showa adjusters and that highly polished clamp is some candy to take in. Um um um. Anyway... being very familiar with the pointer-position of the clocks, I see what you did there - and WHO COULD BLAME YOU?!!! Captain bought one. How about you?

Could you swap out the top triple clamp for the one from the t120 to put some flat bars on it, or are the triple clamps too different?
@calmoto90738 жыл бұрын
It looks like the fork diameter renders them incompatible:(
@MadOgre7 жыл бұрын
Having ridden them... Here's my take. If you are going to spend that much money on this bike - splash out a little more for the R spec version, because it makes all the difference. The brakes are better... the suspension is better... and it just makes for a better bike.
@fyorbane7 жыл бұрын
That's fine but the yellow springs on a classic styled machine like this just looks wrong. I am not keen at all. Looks much better and more authentic with black springs.

having test ridden the R this weekend, I thought the chassis was superb, a bit uncomfortable for me (I usually ride an Explorer). The engine's torque is superb but it very quickly runs out of top end power, revving out to just 7000rpm (even the Explorer goes to 10,500rpm)....I would have preferred for Triumph to tune the torque further up the rev range to suit the sporty nature of the Thruxton. Still a great bike though!
@Hector55Munoz6 жыл бұрын
would you consider this a good bike to start with. i know shifting, and my first bike was a ducati 900ss cr and that thing is sporty as hell and destroys balls and very very..... very quick. but i am responsible and i know what speed is. i can manage a crazy unreliable torquey shifter.... my brother also has a 916 and thats even worse. i put maybe 500 miles on the ducati before deciding its not the style for me. would this be a good choice?
@calmoto90736 жыл бұрын

Wait! I'm sorry, I thought we were talking about the BMW Scrambler. As far as the Triumph, that's a tough call. For me, I'd go for the Thruxton R and there would be no debate.

@calmoto90738 жыл бұрын
+The Crumble Yes you are. I'm a stickler for brakes. And, the adjustable suspension is nice.
@Joric788 жыл бұрын
Prefer the look of the "S" model, both the colour and the more traditional brake/suspension (inc. gaiters) components. For the $2K (AUD) difference though, I think I'd "put up with" the performance difference of the Ohlins and Brembo gear on the "R". I wonder if they engineered that brake squeal to upsell...
@gwwayner8 жыл бұрын
With such a large displacement engine there is no need to rev the crap out of it; it would probably zip along pretty quick just short-shifting it. Btw you are not going to stay alive very long if you don't slow down through intersections and drive more defensively. IMO lane-splitting is especially dangerous; people in cars can be unpredictable. Yeah, the standard Thruxton is very nice for someone who does not have racetrack pretentions and just enjoys a sporty ride on the street.
@MeeJunksEavy7 жыл бұрын
gwwayner lane filtering. Splitting is at speed when the cagers are moving. He reviewed the bike, and you reviewed his riding. Preferred the bike review.

At 5:09 that's a Ford Focus on your left, I really thought that was a European only model. You see them all over in England, usually diesels. Anyway, cool bike.
@Celestion3218 жыл бұрын
+Crana Nope, that generation of Focus we got more or less the same version as Europe. It's when the second generation came around that they diverged. No hatchback or wagon for that generation for us, only a sedan and a coupe. Then with the third gen, the two cars became one again. Yaaaaay.
@Crana8 жыл бұрын
Cool stuff. It's like the car I own is a Vauxhall (Opel) Astra, but over there it's a Saturn Astra, and I think the new ones are Buicks or something. You guys always seem to get limited engine choices too, along with the limited body styles and probably optional extras.
@Celestion3218 жыл бұрын
The Opel Astra and the Buick Verano share a platform but they're not the same like Saturns were to Opel cars. Limited in what way? We usually don't get the very small engines (although we do get the 1-liter Ecoboost in the Fiesta and Focus). We need cars that can get up to highway/freeway speeds and have decent passing power, so you can see why anything smaller than 2 liters usually has a turbo these days. We also don't get many diesel engines except in trucks because of soot and particulate restrictions, which is why Dieselgate is a thing. The good news is that our cities don't smell like a dirty diesel factory like they do in Europe.

@looseparts8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Cameron I've been on the forums and sounds like the noise persists at least up to the 500 mile service. All the T120 and Standard owners complain about it. Don't know if they're able to do anything about it in the shops. One thing I'll point out - that squeal does not exist on the R model.
@cristobaltorres36257 жыл бұрын
+looseparts is that coming from the brakes?
@fyorbane7 жыл бұрын
That's going to be the pad compound.
@chrisbolwell29027 жыл бұрын
I have had break squeal on my T120 for ages its been back to the shop twice, im told it is still bedding in after over 1000 miles it is annoying and embarrassing, if it keeps happening in lets say another 500 miles, the mechanic said he will put in a claim to Triumph. If it is the pads then they should recall them all and fit better ones. Otherwise I love my T120 but since Im in wintry UK I probably wont be riding it much till spring.
