Forty years ago I had my uncle tell me; there might be a lot of deer on the Kaibab but there's one heck of a lot of Kaibab.

Great video. When I was a kid I drew the AZ strip. My dad and myself hunted our butts off for days without seeing a deer. Bunch of sign but no deer. I took my tag home from a once in a lifetime tag. He is gone now and I still remember the good time we had and all the neat country we explored. So like you said it’s the memories. And my souvenir was an old rusty trap that I still have in my wall. This is not the first video were he doesn't bag a trophy or even an animal at all. But I do love this is real hunting, and real hunters dont always kill an animal at all.

As long as the freezer is full those small bucks would get a pass, otherwise i wouldn’t think twice about taking one. I love these hunts and videos. It’s not about notching a tag and bringing the harvest home, it’s the good times and memories with great friends! I truly feel sorry for the folks that measure the success of their hunt by whether or not they fill their tag. The memories of hunts with great friends is priceless! I love how you show the reality of hunting for 99% of hunters. I actually enjoy seeing a show where you don’t shoot a 200”er every time. Thank you for a good example of what hunting is really about. -Eric AZ ( the Kiabab is my most favorite place to hunt for the reasons you shared. Have we taken some great deer over the years, yes. But more than not we too have eaten tag soup. Which in my opinion tastes as ever good as tenderloin, if your sharing that soup with friends and family.)

Thank you for keeping it real Randy. I can't count how many times the Moon, wind and Heat has foiled a hunt we've been on. It's simply incredible the luck or lack of sometimes. But family, friends and fun is our number one.

I go home empty handed a lot. Some of it is because I enjoy watching the animals to the point I lose the opportunity. Other parts are because I archery hunt and have a self imposed hard 20 yd max. Finally dome of the reason I go home empty is because I allow my friends the opportunities rather then taking them myself. In the end I have a really good time and couldn't care less if I harvest something or not. I will enjoy having the time in the woods

I appreciate these tag soup stories as much as any of them. I have hunted out west ( colorado and NM ) 27 times and have 5 bucks to show for it. I have never felt like i wasted my money or time. Each trip was a blessing as this one will be this Nov.

I get so tired of the typical hunting videos that make it look we're all just out there to kill something and brag about it. While filling a tag is of course part of the goal, it's not the only way to measure a hunt as being a success. You and the Hush channel are my favorites because y'all tell the real story and can walk out of a hunt with tag soup but still be proud and successful. Thank you.

Thanks so much for showing these hunts also. It is more about the experience and especially as I get older I cherish the time around the camp fire with my family and friends! Oh yea, I agree, the footage with the AZ game officer was great. It contained lots of valuable information.

After years and years worth of frustration of not even SEEING a "legal to shoot" animal, it's a little more comforting to see game that you COULD shoot, yet choose NOT to shoot. I've always been (primarily) a meat hunter, so, I haven't really played that "find the monster" game. I'm thankful for a filled tag.

I remember back when you could otc archery hunt the Kaibab. Got my first archery deer and turkey there.

YES!!!!! Finally someone actually says what I know by observation. Full moon equals crap hunting. At least it does for me and my past experiences. However during this time I like to hunt midday. It seems as though the deer have a window in midday to hunt.

I had a late archery deer hunt in that same area, I went into the new year hunting. I was just getting over bronchitis, my face mask froze from boogers & I didn't tag out, but it was the best time I ever had.

What a magical place. I wonder, regardless of the moon or weather, if the Kaibab is over rated for opportunity to shoot a good deer. 22 points is once in a lifetime. It's true that its not all about shooting a big buck, but it sure makes you feel better on the ride home. Especially after waiting 20 years.

I like the segment with Mr. Buck (how appropriate of a name!). He explained a lot of the difficulties of game management. Add more of these information pieces. So many hunting videos I see are" we drove here, found the critter using our "sponsors" spotting scope, shot it with our "sponsors" rifle, bye bye..

You captured what hunting is all about. I like to see new country and try to figure out where the game is. That is fun to me. I’m glad there is a process for you to do what you do. Those shows that just show the kill don’t do it for me. Thanks.

Truth!

Start with the basics ... Water. Find an active waterhole and hunt the surrounding thicket and forested areas. Mule deer like higher elevation so start with hill thickets looking down upon the valley with some type of protective rock covering to their back. How do I know this? 40 years experience hunting NM mule deer.

Randy, If you're having to find a reason NOT TO GO, you're doing something wrong..... Really enjoyed the interview with the warden. Nice to see one out in the field with hunters. I'm thinking this is more like Wade said, still too early. I'm thinking more of a "early season" than "pre-rut." If it was more pre rut those deer we be more active I think.... Even the girls were hanging close and not venturing out far away from bedding areas.

Been there done that-heard that story. Spent many vacation weeks on hunts and unfilled tags. Of course it's always great being outdoors, but hunts without harvests does get a bit old and tired.Especially that I would only take a trophy rack. I've always spotted dear but never enough mature bucks with trophy racks. There are much more fulfilling ways to spend vacation time and money. Let the youngins go through the motions. At 60 years old I did it all enough-lol

Randy if I quit every time I had a bad year I would’ve stopped many years ago. Last year I never fired a shot the whole year. I only saw a couple of shooter bucks and one of them was so far my 550 range finder wouldn’t even give a read. I knew he was too far so I didn’t shoot at him. Year before I let bucks go that most hunters never see. Know they are there. I killed two good Whitetails that year. That is hunting. I would love to hunt out west but have never had a chance.

Why do you keep saying our hunts are 5 days? Our hunts are 7 or 10 day hunts. Archers usually get 14 days.

I think the Kaibab and the Strip became world famous great mule deer hunts because of the use of trail cams on the waterholes. Especially the strip...Kind of gave hunters an unfair advantage in isolated areas like that and very few water sources...People could easily find out where the big boys living rooms were by putting out trail cams on the water and then just concentrate on that area and not have to go searching a million acres. . Now that they outlawed the trail cams in AZ for hunting, you almost have to have a guide that's got a lot of experience in those areas to find the big bucks...

Only on the Kaibab could you find the president of the Harley Davidson Rolling Thunder motorcycle club masquerading as a popple cop/game biologist. If he actually is a popple cop, as his badge suggests, as his principle duty per his position description, he's the most knowledgeable I've listened to. Either that or simply well practiced. And if he's a biologist, he should get that uniform off and walk the land in the same fashion as his employers (us) . Authoritarian images turn off a lot of people - including me. Why make management more of a challenge than it already is? But - it's the Kaibab. There's so much demand people drool over walking on that hallowed foundational wildlife management ground.

Kaibab is not what it used to be.Back in the early seventie,s I would see upward,s of 25 trophy mule deer buck,s every day,and many huge buck,s in the 30 inch and up class,were harvested every day.Too many predator,s,thank,s to your fish and game department outlawing steel trap,s .It,s not a quality area anymore like it used to be.There are a few big buck,s killed ,but not like it used to be.Kaibab is literally over run with coyote,s.

At least Az actually manages the game, unlike Kalifornia. Kalifornia keeps taking away hunting opportunities, ie.... Mountain lion, Bobcat and now they’re looking at eliminating all bear hunting. No science behind these decisions, only emotions. There’s no such thing as habitat improvement for animals done at the F&G level in the State, it’s all done by private business or hunting/conservation groups. Ca Forestry has locked down dirt roads after the 2003 & 2007 fires to reduce hunting access and the roads are still locked down today. I’m now looking to start hunting in Arizona, pulling my dollars from Kalifornia for good. The tree huggers have ruined Kalifornia.

The Arizona draw is the worst setup for hunters. It dedicates tags to youth and to trophy hunters only. If you have hunted once or twice in your life you have no points so you have to buy points to get good numbers in Hope's of winning the lottery. Some trophy hunters have hundreds of points and show up just to collect the heads and walk away. My supervisor's husband spent thousands over the years and he finally won a tag and died before he could use it. Also they require you to buy a hunting license before you can put in for the lottery. If you don't win they don't refund the money and you paid for a hunting license that you can't use. It's a scam and they completely ruined hunting. You can be in the UK and win the lottery and not even make it and the tag is wasted all while a local is stuck waiting to buy in to the next lottery to hope to win. Taking away first come first serve and implementing a "pay to win" lottery system has destroyed all Hope's of increasing the popularity of hunting. I could be at the counter ready to hunt on opening day but I can't buy a tag because someone who paid Arizona Fish & Game $1000 over the price of the tag gets to hunt.
