2017 Montana Shiras Moose with Matthew and Randy Newberg (Amazon Version)

Matthew Newberg has drawn a coveted Shiras moose tag in Montana. Randy has applied for 27 years and never drawn, but in this case it doesn't matter. Fortunately for the crew, this hunt is only a few hours from their home base in Bozeman, Montana. Even more fortunate, Marcus Hockett, Field Producer, worked on wildlife research projects in this exact area.
Schedules did not allow Matthew to hunt the first month of the season. That's not all bad, as most of the other tagholders have filled their tags a long time ago, allowing the crew to have the remarkable valley all to themselves.
No shortage of moose. Plenty of bulls. Now the question is, "Which one does Matthew like and how long does he want to extend his hunt?"

While sitting here this morning recovering from my 4 day old knee surgery and listening to you talk about hunting with your son it brings memories of my daughter and i hunting elk on here birthday those times we spent together dressing and cutting and packing her elk out her carrying a quarter up hill and seeing how strong she is amazed me and reminded me how lucky i am to have a daughter that enjoys the outdoors and things i grew up loving to do. Now as i get older i appreciate her going hunting with me and seeing her grow and appreciate all god has to offer in this beautiful world. Thank you for a special film

Randy I sure enjoy watching your videos. This is probably one of my favorites. I have 2 teenage boys and they have been hunting with me but they are also at that time where they want to hang with friends and I hope they will eventually look forward to doing more of this. Having that time with your son is invaluable... Thank you Randy for sharing all of these moments.

I got to share a moose hunt with my Dad in 2017. He finally drew a tag at 65 years old. It was something I won't ever forget and it was definitely something special. I'm very thankful that I was able to be there but the best part was my kids were there also.

Love it! I am taking my 67-yr old dad on his dream hunt in 2 weeks. DIY archery elk in CO, and he is like a kid getting ready for it. Thankful to have the opportunity to take him on what may be a once in a lifetime hunt for him. He has wanted to do this for 40 years, but life kept getting in the way. Hearing you talk about it from your perspective helps me understand what is going through his head now, and this will be a memory I will carry with me forever, regardless if we kill anything! Thanks again Randy!

Amazing hunt you guys. Randy you can relive this anytime just by watching this video over and over. Its the second time I have watched it. Im now 34 and realize more and more how special hunting with my dad is. Specially now as he gets older (now 67) and is less and less capable of getting out into the back country. I moved away after high school and didnt hunt for almost 15 years. got back into it 4 years ago, my dad and I have been elk hunting for a week every year for 4 years now. I look forward to it every year.

The words you expressed in the end of this video were very touching, very emotional and monumentally true. Underneath I feel it's the realization that time is running out the older we get. To realize there's less years in front of us than behind us makes those special moments so much more important. I'd like to say thank you for taking me along some of these special moments with you.

Awesome hunt! great times with family. I got my dad to go out hunting again in 2017 and we harvested his first big game animal in 20 years. Then again in 2019 for his first Antelope at age 68. I loved every bit of those hunts with my pops. You are dead right ... CHERISH EVERY OPPORTUNITY YOU HAVE WITH FAMILY. Keep doing what you do Randy! Maybe I'll be lucky and win the 2021 elk hunt with you.

It’s so spiritual how he says thank you to the animals after he hunts them. Really shows it’s more than hunting for him and that he truly appreciates the sacrifice the animal gives, from the hide to it’s meat. Amazing, I don’t hunt but I learn so much and have a great time watching!

I drew my Wyoming Shiras tag in 2017 after 18 years of applying. It was a solo hunt on public land in Western Wyoming, I shot a nice bull on day 5 amidst grizzly and lion tracks. Probably in the top two of the most gratifying hunts I have ever been on in my life and I know I will most likely never have the opportunity to be the trigger man on another moose hunt in the lower 48. Randy, I noticed that you were wiping dust out of your eyes when you were walking back to the vehicles, I get dust in my eyes too when I achieve success at something that I have put a lifetimes worth of effort into and pay respects to the animal and the land.

True words spoken about memory building Randy. I truly believe I would not have the relationships with my brothers that I do if it were not for making the effort to go hunting and fishing together. I think the best parts are the conversations that crop up when we come around a ridge nose or near a saddle we once had some sort of action or memory.....laughter, ribbing, or revisiting a harvest, even missed shots. I really enjoy your films and the passion you put into them.

I love how you have a grasp of what you both got to experience and I hope Matthew did as well. Last year was my dad's last year in the woods because his body isn't what it used to be (years of construction and "cowboying up"). That was a tough conversation and I am kind of at a loss because he was the only person I regularly went hunting with. I have already found myself looking at the antlers laying around remembering the hunts with him knowing I can't get those years back. Congrats guys!!

Great video randy, I love hunting, I've got a muzzleloader deer tag and my neighbor is taking me. I wish my dad could go, but he probably can't get work off and he's not in very good shape physically and he's allergic to the horses we ride when we hunt. That's why I appreciate the time you spend hunting with your son and making great content for me to watch. -Sam

Randy's story about having to take a conference call for a board obligation is such a juxtaposition. Modern times pose an interesting paradox. And I love that you and Matthew can spend time together. Father-son time is fleeting. I wish I'd have exploited more of it to do things together.

I so look forward to turkey 🦃 season I hope after years of trying together I can get my first turkey and it be with my Dad. Great to see you two taking time to hunt together. My father was a very competitive hunter. The day I was able to out hunt him was the last day he ever hunted with me. I remember the day like it happened yesterday but its been over 40 years. I was 15 at the time and we went squirrel hunting. I shot several I think it was maybe 4 or 5. He shot 0 and he was not happy. That was the last day he ever invited me to hunt with him. The next year I was able to drive and hunt on my own. Years later I tried to get my father to bird hunt and deer hunt with me but he always had an excuse. He would hunt with my brother in law. Even taking him out west to Elk hunt. Over time I just stopped asking and our relationship just kind of fell apart. I have not talked to him in 10 years. So Mathew any time your dad ask you to hunt with him no matter what is going on in your life make the time to do so.

Wow, sorry that it turned to a competition. For me and Matthew, he gets a laugh out of getting me all charged up only to decide he will keep looking. If I glassed up the biggest animal in the area he would pass, just to see me get all unwound. I am blessed that he takes the time to hunt with me. Glad you enjoyed it.

Great hunt, Randy! The ending, talking about cherishing the moments really got to me. This year was the first year I didn't get to hunt with my Dad due to him having Alzheimer's. I live with him now in Iowa, but I used to live in Missoula, and we'd do a horseback elk hunt every fall in WY. I'm lucky that I have a whole lot of special moments stored up from years of different hunts (including a WY moose hunt), but I'm slightly older than Matthew and thought we'd have a lot more years ahead. Love your videos and your approach to life and the outdoors. Keep up the great work!

I am now 69 and have just had my back fused so this year was not a good year to try and hunt here in Montana for me. i really don't know at this point if I will have another time or times to hunt with my sons or not. You are correct to go for it whenever you can as you don't know when your book is coming to the last chapter. Thank you for the great videos !! Maybe we will get to meet someday!

Touching video Randy! I will make my 21 year old son watch this so he won’t have an excuse next season not to go hunting with me!

I’m glad y’all still find time to hunt together. It just seems like you blink, and your kids are grown up and gone.

Almost looked like a bullet hole through his left paddle? Really liking the way you are filming these hunts! Brings back memories and feels like we are right there with you guys!

Glad you like it. Yeah, it was a bullet hole from sometime a while back. Was filled with dirt and debris, but definitely a bullet hole.
