IIHS: Tesla Model S, BMW i3 fall short in recent crash tests
The Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius Prime are still the safest plug-in picks.
To be an IIHS Top Safety Pick, cars must achieve a "good" rating in the five crash tests, and have an "advanced" or "superior" available front crash prevention system. Having headlights rated "good" or "acceptable" give it the "plus" rating. While plug-in vehicles like the Toyota Prius Prime and the Chevrolet Volt have earned the IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick+ award, the recently evaluated Tesla Model S and the BMW i3 come up short.
In the small overlap front crash test, the Tesla's safety belt didn't prevent the dummy's head from hitting the steering wheel through the airbag. The IIHS also noted a possible leg injury in that test. Tesla said it would fix this issue in cars produced beginning January 26, so now its IIHS' turn to smash the car up again to see if its rating improves.
Interestingly, the P100D variant only earns an "acceptable" rating in the rollover test. The roof strength is no different from the rest of the Model S lineup, which are rated "good," but the weight of its big battery puts more stress on the structure while shiny-side-down. Finally, its headlights get a "poor" rating from the IIHS.
The BMW i3's biggest shortcoming is in its head restraints. In a rear-end collision, it only gets an "acceptable" rating, which puts occupants at a greater risk of a neck injury. The IIHS laments that the i3 is the only vehicle in the small car category that doesn't get a "good" rating in this test. The i3's headlights also miss the mark, as the only option gets an "acceptable" rating.
"There's no reason that the most efficient vehicles can't be among the safest," says David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer. If you're wondering about the Chevrolet Bolt, the IIHS says it'll obliterate examples of it in the name of safety later this year.

If you guys go back and look at the small overlap crash of the two cars, the I3 breaks and moves away from the crash, wheras the tesla gets stuck. Thats actually what floyd mayweather uses to minimize damage. Its called the shoulder roll. Im not even kidding. You can see that the dummy in tesla took more damage.

Of course the BMW did well in the first test. It didn't even cancel out all of it's velocity with the collision. It skidded off and had its door peal off in the process before continuing to move forward.

You mean it redirected the force instead of making the full force of the impact be felt by the driver? It's a safer impact. What comes after that is where more testing applies. Personally I prefer the bmw.

It was also just the plastic outer door skin that pealed off. I think it bounced off due to the carbon plastic reinforced tube. Much safer result, as it didn’t have to absorb the impact. Also, on the frontal, the windscreen didn’t even break, showing no deformation of the structure.

so just claim the other two cars are better without showing their crash tests? also why is auto-braking assumed to be safe? i have it on my car and it's extremely dangerous, often braking in situations it has mis-understood to be dangerous (sharp bends and lane-changing of both my car and others into my lane, for example) and put my car and its occupants in harm's way.

I feel the comment about the advanced safety system being an addon is very misleading... The feature is not available on the newer Teslas as the software is not ready (being released this week). All cars ship with the hardware and will have the features even if you don't order the auto pilot feature. Also, the older autopilot cars (AP1) do have this feature and they recently revealed that on its software release for those cars accidents involving the air bags dropped by 40%.

Working at Tesla, not being overly biased, the car structural rigidity is stupidly insane. As soon as you hit the battery pack, most of the oncoming force is stopped there. There was two people who flipped down a 500ft cliff, and you can see how strong the mid section cabin is which was untouched and they both walked away without a bone fracture. The car is that safe (plus you have 4.8k lbs in your favor).

ck m The title says ''Vs 2017 tesla model S'', mislead people that thinks that the quality right now are like this, and in the original video they raised the test level for a higher standard, so that was obviously impossible for the company to predict them, in that old model that was tested shown in the video.

What people love about Tesla is they take these seriously. Improvements aren't made year to year but ASAP. There is a video where a guy. Bought 2 model 3's same year but months apart and shows the differences. Not to mention you can tweet the CEO and get a response. That approach is what is industry shattering.

Any idea as to why the front wheel is white?
@ProDigit80
@ProDigit80 6 жыл бұрын
Tesla and BMW could very easily apply a hard brake as soon as the car hits a frontal collision. Most of the car is electronic anyway. Both their tires were still spinning, propelling the car forward towards the crash!

Good company I like them. and good testing. note that pure head on collisions are unlikely and the most likely are these off-angle types.. Furthermore, I am dissapointed at bmw, i mean you can expect tesla to not be as good as they claimed but bmw should have excellent safety being a german car and luxury brand.

It's clearly designed to deatach on crash. Probably much safer that way, because of less chance of shattering. Either way, I have no idea why you think that solid door glass would slice someones head, it's not sharp at all.

@@niter43 Car glass is laminated so that when it does smash it is safe and nobody will get cut, but still a huge pane of glass travelling at 40mph will slice someone horrifically. Wow Tesla fanboys really know nothing about cars

In some way it is reasonable. Tesla is among the heavies EV for the same wheelbase, due to the fact that it tried o achieve both performance and range. The battery is heavy and does not contribute to the rigidity of the chassis, even worse it put more load to the body, which makes it 'less safe', at least in the current method of impact test. The BMW i3 is another story, or somewhat predictable to have such a poor rating. Also to overcome the heavy battery, it uses a composite monocoque structure. For supercars like Ferrari and Lambs, fiber monocoque body means high stiffness (may not always mean safer), but the downside is high cost. Cheap composite monocoque like i3 may put too much attention in cutting cost and lightweight, hence both the safety and rigidity suffers. Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius all based on traditional FF layout and has a big engine in the front. Though the engine may reduce the size / effectiveness of the crumple zone, it does somehow provide extra stiffness to the front end of the car. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. The current impact test is more towards traditional cars, or you can say ICE cars tend to design for these test. EVs, in the other hands, try to be the game changer, but the rule of the game don't always change. I don't always trust such impact tests, not because they're biased or wrong. The car I love, may not even make it to these test. It is still arguable that such test by an insurance industry represents the true measure of safety or not, but it does give a fair baseline to all cars independent to the car industry.
