This is my first impressions review of the 2017 BMW RnineT Scrambler. I was very impressed with the looks of the R9T variants when I saw them at the NEC show back in November so I was very eager to try this one out - my favourite looking variant, the Scrambler. How does it compare to the Triumph Scrambler and Ducati Scrambler? Stay tuned to find out.....
Many thanks to the fabulous chaps at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead for letting me borrow the bike to review.
I use the following equipment to record and edit my VLOGs:-
GoPro HD Hero 2 and 4 cameras
Nikon D7100 DSLR for static and video shots with various lenses
Lavalier microphone and sellotape for in helmet audio - £9 from E-Bay
Power Director 8 for the PC (for video editing)
Lavalier microphone for in garage audio - £20 E-Bay
My current motorcyles are:-
Honda CRF250L
Triumph Street Triple R
BMW R1200GS
Ducati 899 Panigale

The view through the mirrors looked amazingly vibe free and clear...better than any bike I've ever rode

Yeah the mirrors worked OK if looking a bit stalky (as they often do on these retro styles bikes).....

I've taken the R Nine T Scrambler for two test rides now, here in South Carolina USA. I thought the bike was excellent. I had read some of the reviews stating that the steering felt heavy. I didn't find it that way at all. Granted, I haven't ridden the R Nine T classic yet. But I found the steering to be very responsive. Also, I didn't mind the dual sport tires at all. I think the people who are uncomfortable with them, have not ridden on dual sport tires before. I have Heidenau K60 knobby tires on my BMW 1200 GS, and I love them too. I love the feel and sound of knobby tires, as well as their capabilities. In the end, I think the Scrambler is a fantastic looking bike, rides great, and I love the sound too. Thanks for your review. From across the pond, may I say, well done.

I agree the Scrambler looks the business - as it happens I just got back from riding the R9T Racer, now that's a BMW retro that does handle (in my opinion of course, it's all a matter of personal taste I guess). Thanks for stopping by - TMF

Thanks for the review, I purchased a new triumph scrambler and had the arrow exhaust fitted last October. No regrets in any department, it really is a fun bike with a great sound. Happy new year, regards Jeff.

+ TMF Took one of these out for a test ride and instantly loved everything about it and purchased one on the spot. Everything you mentioned is valid and much of that old character riding experience is what I like the most. It's simple pure biking. Many riders today only have experience of silky smooth highly engineered and electronically assisted machines and going back to basics can come as a bit of a shook but for us older bikers this bike recaptures that old school look and feel perfectly. I love it for what it is and represents and I'm sure others will do likewise.

i'm a third for James's opinion. I just bought one and a large part of the selling point was the roughness of the aircooled boxer, and the perceived heaviness of the front end setup. I'm coming from a world of rigid Harleys & vintage Triumphs, so anything new feels like a twitchy spaceship to me. I owned an '06 Thruxton for a couple of years and with the exception of its sketchy featherlight feeling (to me) front end, that thing put me to sleep ... too docile and smooth for my tastes.

Hi Andy, I came looking for this video this morning, as North Oxford Garages have just leant me an R9T Scrambler whilst my GSA is in for service. I wondered if I was missing something, as after an hour on the R9T, I couldn't wait to get off the thing. I think you said "underwhelmed", which is the perfect word. I too had tingly hands, the suspension is way too hard... I'm not sure I 'get it' at all. However, you were the 'go-to resource' I chose! Take care mate, Chris

Thanks TMF, another open and honest insight into a different bike. Would be interesting if you are able to get a ride on the cafe racer version of the R Nine T as I thought that looked stunning at the NEC. Cheers, Andy

@TheMissendenFlyer 7 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Tofts Yeah I'm sure any of the road oriented machines (or a scrambler with road tyres) would ride significantly better. Other than at the NEC I've not seen the cafe racer version, the chances of getting a ride on one are pretty slim I reckon!

Very interesting. I rode the standard R Nine T while my GS was being serviced and agree with your comments. Wasnt entirely sure about it but like the look of the Scrambler. There is an option of a taller seat which may help me, but it would totally be a second bike

Oh for sure this is a second or third bike, a thing to play with on a sunny Sunday. Love the way it looks, just not the way this particular one handles. I think the tyres were very likely the main culprit....

Loving the videos dude! I bought a pure last summer after testing loads of "modern retro" bikes. Funny how one mans negative is another mans positive, I absolutely love the vibey motor and the way shakes and rattles! To me it feels old but performs up to date and that's exactly what I wanted. My other bike is a old k75 and it's super smooth so I didn't want something similar. Anyway keep up the good work buddy!

Enjoyable review. Think the tyre issue is common issue on a range of bikes from all the manufacturers. The faux off road tyres fitted as OE on the taller trail and scrambler type machines is for me style over practically. I once owned a Tiger 800 XC bought for touring but not off road; never could get confident with the road handling of that bike.....a combination of the large front wheel and the tyres. My advice to anyone looking for good road handling is go for 17" road wheels and road rubber. If you do fancy a bit of off road action buy a small CRF or WR250 which you accept will be compromised on the road but will be brilliant off.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 жыл бұрын
I do have a CRF as it happens (which is great fun off-road) and I have fitted uber-knobbly tyres on it - strange thing is on the CRF they don't make any noise on the road and the handling is just fine! Must be something to do with heavier bikes/wider knobblies being and issue....thanks for watching and for stopping by - TMF

You are not wrong about the steering. I thought it was me so took one out again yesterday. So heavy to turn for some reason and really hard work on the roads which this was supposedly designed for. I don't believe it's just down to the tyres either. Ultimately there are much better scramblers out there if not quite as pretty.

Hi TMF, Nice video. I totally agree with your thoughts having rode this bike a few weeks ago. I also rode the bike with cross spokes and "off road tyres". Handling was slow and undefined. Ok on the move, but a mini roundabout was a challenge. I rode in the dry and did not inspire confidence for wet weather riding. However I also rode the standard RNineT which was brilliant. Upside down forks, good tyres etc. Try the "normal one", it may transform your views of this platform. I'm now worried about the GS inspired RNINET, if its like the scrambler it will only sell on its fantastic looks. Keep safe all.

The scrambler handles great.... Awesome lean angles and although on mine I have the Pirelli MT60 tires, I've ridden with a friend with the same set up as the one you tried.... Handled like a dream too. Mind you he's really used to the bike as he's had it for over a year. Not convinced you had enough time on the bike to appreciate it properly. Also when you say that it's not an easy bike to ride... I think it's one of the easiest I've ridden. My wife too said it's one of the easiest bikes she's ridden. Miles better than our Ducati scrambler. But anyway it's always very subjective. Fair game.

I agree with you regarding the handling as I was given one of these today because my GSA in for a service. I believe it’s those pesky knobblies upsetting the handling, I felt so unsure on roundabouts 😮 spent a lot of time pulling over & taking pictures of it, It really looks the part.

Tried one in Austria in the summer and found the seating position to be wrong, Too cramped for anything other than a short ride. It seems that BMW increased the ground clearance by lifting the pegs. I much preferred the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled

I bought one in late November without even trying it 😀. Had it out a couple km before cold, salt and snow arrived. I am one of those guys that will use it on gravel, I have put down almost all kilometer on bad roads and gravel. Regarding vibes, I think it depends on what bike you are used to.... to me it silk smooth. The exhaust, Acrapovic is standard on the Scrambler at least in Sweden. I am with you regarding the position of pegs, they should have been lower. I have angled the handlebars upp/forward and added som additional 20 mm blocks so it's starting to get better. The tires sound alot but the actually work pretty well, the say that the sound will be less as the hard edges dissappear but we will Se about that. Thanx for your review you do em good.

That is true Mike and I know these types of bike aren't to everyone's taste (I love all the R9T variants though). And yes it is an odd one about the engine, I guess it's to retain "character" in the retro range, but to me it's just not as good an engine as the liquid cooled boxer....I for one could do without all that "Character"!! (Maybe BMW had a load left over in the warehouse)

The engine design is decades old - why mess with success? They are air and oil cooled and the original Volkswagen beetles had air cooled flat 4's with no problems.

I am hoping you will give your impressions of this bike if you have a chance, as I've not seen that you've previously posted one. Riding position is between Street Triple and GS. Rode the BMW Scrambler in summer, had similar thoughts - vibey, odd handling due to the low center of gravity or the wheel sizes and Karoo 3 tyres. Ok, so I flipped and completely changed my mind about it after another test ride, this time with normal tyres. Bought the bike in the end and put some 2500 kms on it over summer last year. It sits next to a R1200GS in the garage. I love the looks and the character and the simplicity of no ride-by-wire systems on it. The GS feels like a commercial airliner in comparison - always deciding for you, always feels like there is a German computer between your hand and the wheels. Not so with the Scrambler. I just adore the instant input and feedback. The way it sways when you rev it, how it sounds, how it pulls at literally any gear and speed, how the shaft drive jacks up when you gas it, the subtle vibrations, the noisy dry clutch. And the gearbox is silk, compared to the agricultural one on the GS. It just turns heads wherever you pull up. So, the GS is the wife - all day, dependable, long range capable, comfy, go-anywhere bike. The Scram is the hot, if somewhat temperamental girlfriend that's a lot of fun on weekends and at the right amounts :)

As a person of a certain age, an air-cooled boxer is iconic, but I'd never ridden one until test-riding the RnineT (not the Scrambler version). Sadly, it was a case of 'never meet your heroes', as I really didn't like it at all. It felt agricultural, and I did find it underpowered (my own bike is a Street Triple, so not exactly a powerful bike). It has 'character' but not in the sense that made me love it. If I had a garage for, say, 4 bikes , then maybe I'd find room for it, for Sunday morning rides to an idyllic town or seafront, and a pose. But it would fill a very small niche for me. Agree with you on the Ducati Scrambler, feels a learner bike, which the RnineT doesn't. Cheers.

Yes the R9T scrambler I rode certainly didn't have the urgent power you get from the Street Triple - it's a real shame because I wanted to love the scrambler...but if you compare it to the little Triumpet from a performance point of view, no contest in my mind! Cheers - TMF

I bought a scrambler! I test rode a Pure and a CB1100RS and EX . Almost committed to the Pure as it was a hoot and handled brilliantly but couldn't quite come to terms with tubed tyres so in the end I ordered a Scrambler (a great deal at the moment) without riding one and had a nervous couple of weeks going through reviews to allay my "handling" fears. I'm never gonna go off road so got the Metzeler Tourance option and the scrambler has tubeless spoked wheels. Well , no issues at all. With the road tyres it rides very similar to the Pure despite being slightly taller. I reckon BMW have shot themselves in the foot a little and would be better having demo bikes with road tyres and off-road option rather than the other way round

Hello TMF, enjoying your reviews and just returning to biking after a 40 year gap! My question for you is related to rider height as like you I am 5' 8" and looking at the GS range (not the Adventure). In your reviews you seem to have the standard height model with a lowered seat but `I wondered if there's a reason not to go for the lowered chassis version (possibly with a lowered seat)? Hoping you can give some relevant advice as I don't want to get it wrong when I buy! Many thanks.

Would anyone really take one scrambling? The thought of dropping it fills me with dread! A good fun on-road bike in my opinion. Interesting what you say about buffeting at 70mph - my R1200R Sport is smoother without a screen than with which I find odd - must read up the law on aerodynamics! Nicely done again! Kind regards, Jon.

I test rode an R Nine T Classic, an R Nine T Pure and this (as well as some bikes from other manufacturers). Firstly this is NOT a Scrambler and if you buy one with the horrible knobby tyres they need to be thrown out however nice you think they look. But with good quality road tyres I prefer the ride to the other R Nine Ts. Yes it is slower to drop into corners but its a much bigger bike with (for me) a much more comfortable riding position and the suspension irons out surface irregularities better. I love it but it MUST have road tyres. I suggest our friend the Missenden Flyer tries again on a test bike with the right tyres, preferably just after or before one of the other R Nine Ts to illustrate the difference.

Hehe, I had a couple of comments that the old intro was too long and that I should scrap it, I then noticed that I lose 25% of my viewers in the opening sequence so this was an experiment to see if a shorter intro retained more viewers....and so far it has! So the answer is a really good looking opener that lasts about 5 seconds!

the old air cooled boxer offers better fuel economy than the current lc. I owned the old 1200R, basically the same engine as the scrambler, it was a great handling bike - I dare to say better handling than the LC GS and LC GSA - and could do 430 km with a full tank! Maybe try a nineT with road tires and road Öhlins suspension? I am quite sure a better bike than the scrambler.

You can't deny the quality of a BMW and although, as I've said before, I don't usually go for oldies, this looks great till you get to those cylinders poking out either side. Howdy sir, came here for see if you rode one of these as I am considering buying one as a commuter bike and keeping my excellent trusty old K. Rode the Pure version yesterday with spoked wheels and that nice welded aluminum tank. I came away with exactly the same impression as you have mate! The handling was just off for me, everything else was awesome. She did not want to turn in quickly and felt very lazy. I ride a older K1200RS with Ohlins and bunch of power mods. I always throught the old girl was a pig through the corners, but the R9T Pure takes that cake and eats it. Would love to hear your opinion on the regular R9T, which has the S1000RR forks and brakes plus completely different steering angle. That's ideally what I came to ride at the dealer but they didn't have one ready for a test ride. Maybe next weekend... I hope it is better than the Pure. I found it funny that I knew all about the suspension changes and dealer did not. Cheers mate!

I tried the R Nine T and the Ducati Scrambler and wound up buying a Moto Guzzi V7 II. As you say, the Scrambler feels like a toy, and the finish quality leaves a lot to be desired. It's also way too torquey. I wasn't keen on the look or seat position of the R Nine T, let alone the price. So wound up with the Guzzi, which I'm very happy with despite it having less power than either. I also appreciate the fact that the Guzzi is a modern bike rather than a nostalgic throwback. The fake fins and fake carbuorator on the new Triumph are a total turnoff.
