If I had to explain why my last 5 bikes have been Harley's, having owned both European an Japanese bikes previously...........you just wouldn't understand 🇬🇧

Harleys are a cruiser bike. That's what they're made for. They use a big low rpm engine that isn't very highly stressed to make its power. I get a real kick out of people saying that is somehow ancient technology because it doesn't use dohc with a mile long stretchy cam chain and a parts count as high as any pushrod engine. The fuel and ignition systems in a modern HD are state of the art, and the equal of any sport bike you care to name, and as reliable as any of them. So it doesn't run 15000 rpm and sound like a chainsaw. Big deal. max rpm on any engine is limited by surface speed in feet per minute of the pistons. harley could make a v twin that ran 12000 rpm too, if they shortened up the stroke to 2" or so. To what end? As far as speed goes, the speed limit on the interstate is 75mph, and any HD I've ever ridden would top 110 easily, so just exactly how fast does it need to be?

i love my 2008 Dyna Super Glide. I've had very few problems, Voltage regulator at 50K. That's it. I do not have oil leaks or been broken down on the side of the road. I had the 106 kit installed, cams, adjustable push rods, lock up clutch, HD Super Tuner, etc.. I do the maintenance , change all the fluids, lubricate all the cables, a little mystery oil in the fuel at fill ups. I have 66K on the bike now and still going strong. HD Forever!

My nephew just bought the 2017 ultra limited. When it was idling, I was impressed. It was not meant to be a screaming rocket, But a comfortable, long distance ride. And that it is, Nice sound, well laid out. Nice features. Actually it is the first Harley that i would not mind owning. They really made some big jumps forward.

I think the Revolution engine is superior to the Milwaukee Eight. The only problem is the appearance. It doesn't look like the traditional twin cylinder Harley engine and the V-Rod doesn't look like the traditional Harley Davidson motorcycle. Harley made a good attempt to keep the V-Rod going. It was the public that killed it. I love my 2016 V-Rod Muscle and feel no buyers remorse for getting it.

I have had Hondas for most of my life. I currently ride a 1997 Valkyrie 1520 flat six. It was the first year of the Valkyrie and it holds some strong memories for me from 1997. I love its smooth power and the look of it. I get looks from many every time I ride it and for me it does everything I want. Now Having said that, I just rode a 2016 and 2017 low cruisers from my local Harley dealership. I had never rode one and I just wanted to experience the old versus the new engine. I have a bad back and the vibration of the 2016 at intersections was intolerable, the 2017 was less but still unacceptable for my injuries. I was so impressed with the quality of the bikes. They were both beautiful machines and I understand now what torque means. They were both well balanced and enjoyable to ride. I would have to say that in a long ride on variable elevations, (through mountains), I would enjoy not having to keep shifting gears as much as I have to on my Honda, hell I think you could stay in 3rd for most in town driving. I was impressed overall but the prices were outrageous! I like that they have lowered, from the factory, touring bikes. If I were rich and could find a seating solution to take care of the vibration to my bad back I would really like owning such a beautiful machine. They have plenty high tech electronics on them and the belt drive is almost as good as my shaft driven Valkyrie. Stop hating on each other guys, just state your opinions and get along!

It's about time Harley got with the program... Japan has been kicking their ass for decades..

I love innovation as long as you keep the classic looks and lines. Why are so many Harley fans so against the partial water cooling? As long as the radiator is hidden well and doesn't take away from the looks of the bike. Every generation I see innovation with Harley only improving. Since it is not fully water cooled I can assume the Radiator will be nice and small tucked away between the frame. The opposition to water cooling reminds me of when I started riding, FI was an option on many Harleys, many fellow riders were telling me they would never go FI. After switching to FI, I will never go back to Carbs. Bottom line I am really impressed with Harleys new innovation, first company to go Air and Water cooling.

This is the best video with information regarding the "new" HD 107. Very informative video on a lot of the amazing changes. I always wonder why did Harley wait so long to do this....by what I have seen and heard....it will definitely be a big boost to 2017 HD sales. Nice video. Thanks for making it. As was mentioned earlier, the top spark plug going to be bitch to inspect/change. As for the cam tensioner, I'm sure we'll quickly see an after-market gear-driven option.

I have guys that I ride with who rode Harleys. One ended up with a BMW K1200. Great bike, very fast. His brother ended up trading his Road King in on a BMW RR. Yeah that lasted about 3 months when we went on a 1,044 22 hour ride. He traded it on a BMW RS1200. He has no problems now. My other friend had been riding Ultra Classic Limiteds for years. We in his garage built a frankenstein bike with an 85 Heritage and a Suzuki GXR100. He got tired of Cameros running away from him on the highway on his Ultra. Plus after all of the Harleys he had bought from Ademec Harley in Jacksonville he was told when he had major wheel issues after almost a year, What do you want us to do about it? Talk to Harley. He told the owner that he couldn't believe what he was hearing. That they had no regard for a possible hazard. That someone was going to get killed if they kept these wheels in production. O.K. this is coming from a guy who use to race 1000 cc Class sport bikes all over the country for decades. He took his nearly year old Ultra to BMW and traded it in on a RS1200. He was pulling wheelies on the on ramp going home. Lol Oh and my first friend ended up with a Ducatti Multistrada 1200R. I am the lone hold out with my 010 Street Glide. I told them, No way! I will not buy a BMW. And what, Look like a safety cone riding down the road? Lol Besides I have way to much invested in clothing And I will have to come up with a whole new set of pick up lines....ahahahaha I love to ride long distance in a day 3,4-500 to a 1000+ miles and I have no problems on my Street Glide. Everyone has there preference. Not everyones is going to like the same bike. The point is we are all in the wind experiencing the freedom of the road.

This video was good in that I am now completely familair with harleys new engine design for 2017. With what I already knew as a mechanic and with detailed view of these I actually after watching the vid know plenty and could repair one without any question. Opinion? Harley would be better off with the older two cam knuckle head or pan design even today and they would last longer. Not an argument but simply a mechanical fact

Some questions though, about that chain cam tensioner (probably the only plastic part in the entire chain cam system..) which was one of the main drawbacks of the twin cam engine, especially the earlier versions. What's your opinion on this? Is it going to be durable? Why do you think they keep on this system and not reverting to a gear system? Excellent work again Matt, your other videos on various models are superb!

Good video Matt! Too bad Harley didn't do it right & go with an overhead cam setup. This setup is close to Fred Flinstone's car, archaic!

sad that the engine technology in a 1973 honda cb500 is heads and shoulders above the 'new and improved' engine designs in a 2017 harley.

Coming up on 50yrs of motorcycle riding, wrenching, and building, many makes and models. Until recently, by choice, i hadn't had any experience with anything newer than a shovelhead, but by happenstance i became the owner of a 97 FXDWG with a rubbber mounted evo and found the bike to be quite nice. An improvement in performance, ride, and handling while still retaining the basic characteristics of my beloved Harley. I had been looking at an 02 Heritage Springer Softail with a twin cam in it, and thought it was one of the most beautiful machines i had ever seen. I broke down and bought it without first riding it, due to circumstances and time constraints. When i went for my first ride i was so dissapointed that i almost threw up. Everything that had attracted me to Harley in the first place had been stripped away. Gone were the unique Harley feel, noises, and smells and I was beside myself with grief! At a loss as to what to do. The heart and soul had been ripped out of the thing, and it was a cold, lifeless monstrosity, just another stamped out, mass produced thing. It was a true reflection of the times we live in, a cheap imitation of what used to be, in a world full of people just going through the motions because everyone has forgotten how to be real. I was even more horrified after watching a video on how this engine was constructed, with chains and counterbalancers to remove the vibration and even more chains actuating the valve train! Additional mass and chain rotating at high rpm = more probability of future catastrophic failure! Alas, this is progress and apparently what the Harley rider of today desires, but you are so totally cheating yourselves out of the very essence of what motorcycling in its beginning was all about. I recently traded the twin cam for a 67 Electraglide in very good original condition, and will never own or ride anything newer than my evo. To each his own.

Plastic cam chain tensioners - ugh. I am dealing with plastic cam chain tensioners on two TC 88 engines. I will not be buying a Harley as my next bike.

The MECHANICAL VALVE TRAIN NOISE is WHAT US GEAR HEADS LIKE ! It's WHAT YOU CALL the SOUNDS of a "REAL MOTOR RUNNING" NOT a SEWING MACHINE MOTOR. I DON'T LIKE the DIRECTION HARLEY is GOING, NEXT UP is the ELECTRIC HARLEY'S ;( JMHO

A great video Matt, I'm late to comment but I had no idea some of the Harleys were water cooled, where have I been. Great detailed review of the new Milwaukee engine, I just bought the new 2022 Fat boy and I'm really enjoying the bike, it's a smooth machine.

Why Harley wont go to a gear driven cam is beyond comprehension. Looks like buyers of this will be looking towards S&S for a gear drive fix, just like for the twin cam.

Yes I test rode a few here in Las Vegas last month. Better power. and handling. But for my money the Indians are my choice. Hands down.

for all the guys complaining on HD being slow in R&D or behind any other maker is very easy to explain, they dont have to. they can't keep their bikes on the showroom floors. People dump their 3 year old SG just because of a new fairing vent, or displacement increase. I'm blown away at the sales of Harley's. HD owners remind me of Apple fan boys, gotta get the new model because of a miniscule upgrade.

Its interesting to see The Motor Company step back to a single cam, wonder if placement of the rocker assembly in the new heads allowed them to improve on the drastic angle of the push rods that we had some issues with on the Evo's? I do thank HD for using removable lifter blocks on the 8 instead having them molded into the case! Matt, I also noticed that no valve lash adjustment is apparent on the outboard valves on the rocker assembly? Honda used the "forked" rocker idea for many years on some of their smaller four valve engines. They found it necessary to be able to adjust those outward valves because when two valves are operating off the same "fork" they dont wear exactly the same. Am I missing something here? Perhaps a shim bucket located in the rocker assembly? Cant wait to get a peek and a demo on one of these new ones - be really interesting to see/hear the exhaust note and see if some of that AWESOME Shovelhead music will fill the soul again - never could get my Twin Cams to sound like my Shovels!! STILL retains a cam tensioner? LOL! I'll pass and keep riding my Evo which has NO dumb cam tensioner and 128,000 miles on it. I wonder if the Kraut's designed this one for them again?

The "knock sensor" you pointed out in the head is in fact the compression release. Right in the middle between the spark plugs. It looks the same as earlier years. I'm sure there is a knock sensor somewhere but that ain't it.

Sooo, Harley changed a couple things but left all the things that usually wear out and cause their bikes to go into the shop in the first place. Chain drive-still there, Stator-still buried in the engine, Rockers-still the same pressure at opposite ends causing wear, Oil pump- still low pressure, Pushrods-still there, etc. By almost all measures the Victory Freedom engine is/was a much better engine, and they came out almost 20 years ago. There's no excuse Harley, other than you want to milk your captive customer base for more money. I have to give credit to Harley for being the best at one thing--your marketing is excellent; you're easily selling overpriced bikes that can't match the power output of other makes, while having a multitude of known issues with your bikes that force costly repairs in the future.

Harley has had longer than anyone to build the perfect motorcycle engine. Should have done it long ago.

can that chain drive be switched out for a gear driven cam? Because that chain tensioner, is going to be wone,down and end up in your oil ,which can clog up the oil flow.

Typical HD .....never talk about horsepower... might be embarrassed to compare to other more advanced ....When HD goes to full liquid cooling, does away with antique external pushrods, and develops a sleek shaft drive, then I might look harder...until then, they're still 20 to 30 years behind real technology

Is the new single cam just pressed together like the twin cams in the 103 or is it a solid piece? Also I see the plastic tension piece on the cam chain. Does Harley have an inspection time printed somewhere so if you don't have the inspection and the motor comes apart and they void the warranty for not having the inspection?

Four valves per cylinder for better breathing, two spark plugs per cylinder for cleaner burn, higher output charging system. I like what I'm seeing. I will concede to the Harley haters the bike is expensive. But ten years from now (unless the whole world goes to hell) it will still have a greater percentage of the purchase price than any other bike I am aware of.

And by the way, torque is good for pulling stumps but it is HORSEPOWER that makes you go faster, plain and simple physics. Not Harley physics where torque is some how always better than power. If an engine is not water cooled it is 50s old engine technology with low compression, excessive heat and low power. fact.

A chain driven cam? Water cooled heads? Man, why not just get a metric for 1/3 the price and be done with it?

Seems like they answer comments that are comfortable for them. I'm not being a wise guy, i just bought a 2017 Road Glide however I am not Brand loyal. I ride what works best for me at the time. Had a 03 Road Glide and it was the most comfortable bike ever, for me. My previous comment I asked about the cam tension follower. Just trying to prepare myself for the near future.

What percentage of the 2017 Milwaukee 8's had the fluid transfer problem? Was it a lot? Thanks.
