2017 Mauritius - How Expensive is Food in a Supermarket?

A quick tour through a supermarket in La Gaulette in the south of Mauritius. At the time of filming $1 = MUR33
This supermarket was well stocked with food and general merchandise although still small compared to another supermarket 15min away in Black River which had a huge selection of fresh produce. Generally, you're better off buying fruit and vegetables from roadside stalls but make sure you have an idea of prices before you buy. We spent around 3 weeks in Mauritius - if you have any questions let me know.

Nearly the same prices as in uk. It's ok for tourists but not great for the locals.

Go to local foire/markets to buy veg and fruit at local prices way cheaper than supermarkets

That's what we used to do when we lived in Mauritius many years ago. It was the local market for fruit and veg and selected grocers/ supermarkets for the general stuff where it could be a bit cheaper

u shud check big supermarket price are cheaper than these small supermarket! am a mauritian! the onion flower is used to make rougail with salted fish(mauritian food)

Mauritius should devote itself to diversifying its agricultural sector and set up farms devoted to producing fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy for the domestic market. This would make fresh produce cheaper for Mauritians.

What a Bargain, it costs about 5 times more for anything in the Seychelles......in fact, a side plate of chips on the Seychelles cost 90 Rps.....about 4 GPB's, and it wasn't a big side plate .....

This video was shot at La Gaulette supermarket - if you drive towards Tamarin (9km) you will also find the larger London Way Supermarket.

If I remember the selection was fairly limited in that particular store at the time. In Mauritius we have found the best option for fruit & vegetables to be from road-side vendors.

Wo hold on if you were a mauritian you would know what is poverty newborns are dying cause RS doesnt worth anything in the world our 40 rs is $0.98 so yeah

We did not stay in Port Louis. The studio apt we had was in La Gaulette in the south. We got it via AirBnB and it was around $30 pd if I remember correctly.

@@WeWillNomad Thanks...what about internet(wifi)? is that good? I am planning to move there by next year...but I want tomake sure if wifi is good because I work from home

Wow nice! We would love to move there for a while. The infrastructure is great and in many ways a surprise overall. We had good wifi at the place we stayed and also for the 2-day trip we did to the north. Seems pretty decent everywhere (we were able to upload to KZfaq) so I'm sure you'll be able to find a provider. Cell data was also pretty cheap. We both got Prepaid SIMS from Emtel with data for the 30 days and spent less than 10$ each.

Very expensive country no Mrp on each product the local shops topup their share as well grocery not of good quality, end up paying more for it. Don't know how local people manage, beautiful place though...

Come and live in mauritius for 2 weeks only you will realise how poor Mauritius is like our 40rs is $0.98so yeah

Am a local there and for some people it is easy there as 90%of people there are rich but the 10%people face a lot of problem lack of money due to these prices

90% are rich ? What Mauritius are you from ? More like around 90% cannot : Afford 3 balanced diet per day per head. Afford to own a house. Afford to RENT a house alone. Afford health activities and leisure. And since 2020: Cannot afford to complete their studies even though education is free with the new BS laws!

You do not posses intelligence to even understand what is the cost of 3 balanced meal per day per person. Also genius. Living under someone s roof does not mean you own it. Your SOL distates your surroundings and relations. Do not think it is the norm!
