That’s that. Three months and as many thousand kilometres later, and it’s time to hand back our 2017 Peugeot 308 Active hatchback.
We’ve traversed highways and country roads, done the daily grind commute thing, pawed over its interior and infotainment, and while I’ve been the primary possessor of the car during its time here, it has spent time with other members of the editorial and executive teams.
This lengthy loan has probably been the most enlightening for me, personally, in the whole time I’ve been doing this job (just over seven years).

I think this is a fair review tbh - the media system isn't perfect, and having the most used touch buttons on the left hand size isn't ideal. That said the good bits far outweigh the negatives. It's great to drive, the interior and cockpit area is nice, and the small steering wheel I find to be great fun and pretty cool. Really happy with my choice to purchase.

wessam nazmy its easier if you use auto function in the air con, and just turn off the a/c when its too cold.

I've just bought one, and before I test drove it two things worried me: the steering wheel/instrument relationship and the touch-screen. I am tall and could comfortably see the instruments, as could my much shorter wife, after appropriate adjustments. As for the "media centre". I've never owned a car with one, prior to the MY18 308 my most recent car was a 2009 model. In fact I've only ever driven one other car (well two, but I didn't use the screen in one of them) and that was a Mazda 3 which has a rotary knob to move through the different menus. I'm not all that flash with smartphones and honestly had no issues at all with the menus. Although I haven't used satnav yet, I can't figure out why the presenter above complained so much about adjusting the aircon when in navigation mode. I have my music source displayed, press the fan shotcut, it took me to aircon, I adjust a couple of things, go back to music. Takes seconds, and I'm no great shakes with computer software and the like. One also wonders how the tester managed to never stop at lights and find time to adjust the a/c. As for fuel economy, I filled in the city, drove around a bit, drove 50kms home and it was showing 6.6l/100km. I've never had close to that, even from my previous 1.4l WS Fiesta. I've had to laugh at other tests on this car where economy was bagged "I couldn't get below 8s but I did spend a lot of time in Sport mode in the windy hills" or "we didn't get out of the city much". Of slightly more concern are the fiddly steering wheel controls for stereo/phone, and the hidden cruise control stalk which is counterintuitive, with too many buttons which have to be operated by feel. That, and the piddly interior storage options, more limited even than the late Fiesta.

Great well balanced review. The rise of touch screens in cars is sadly becoming more common. A real safety issue when on the move.

Indeed. Police in Australia are savage on mobile phones, but you're supposed to be able muck around with a touch screen while driving.

@@fredrubble5024 interesting thank you. Same in the UK but many people still ignore the mobile phone ban in a car. I don't even like trying to change radio station when driving...luckily controls on the steering wheel help. :-)

I own one of these and it's a great car. The touchscreen is nowhere near as hard to use as he makes out. In fact, it's quite easy to use once you're used to it. The diving position may not suit all but it's still excellent. The cars build quality is excellent. Something he failed to mention. Poor review. Not surprised, the Australian market is obsessed with cheap Japanese and Korea cars.

I've just bought one and neither the touch screen or the driving position are issues although my wife has to change more things to get comfortable than with other cars. I haven't come across any cheap Japanese cars lately, and Koreans are catching up. My other car is a Renault, made in Korea though. Still has plenty of French quirks. Pre-touchscreen though so this is my first car so endowed.

Bro you've got automatic climate control, why the hell would you manually change fan speed and temp? The quickest way to cool the car down is to leave it on auto and lower the temp, just a couple of clicks and you're good

The pick of the litter was the previous access in manual trim which was 22K AUD. A francais bargain with all the good bits, including the brilliant 3 pot pulling 230nm with a manual tranny was the best and the climate control were actual buttons! Lower spec = better!!!

I partially agree about taouch screen... it is better to have separate aircon controls! as well as it is annoying to scroll up and down trough radio station list... memory buttons are way better! so I hate them in any version, touch or "MMI"! but on the other hand, there is section marked with "Lo" in aircon sub menu... if it functions like it implys, your "problem" should be solved with two simple touches... ;)! and this originally (and predominantly) is "left hand drive" car... so most used controls originally are closer to the driver.... what I don't agree about is i-Cokpit remark... I'm not tall (1.72m) and I had NO problem with st.wheel obstructing the dials, without having it lowered "down to my lap"! this was kind of problem in 2008 where st.wheel did cover lower part of instrument table (but not dials itself)! so this remark is sensless... in 308 and 3008 steering wheel is not in a way of dials view! even if you are not tall.... if you set correct driving position that is (wrist on the top of st.wheel and fully pressed clutch predal, when your hands and leg are extended)! I find this "perpetuating" remark, like that stupid flower on first version of new Beetle dashboard... somebody stuck it there when it was presented and then everybody else had it there in their test for years... :))

Mirko Zlikovski you can store radio stations, so don’t have to scroll for them. That to can be accessed from the steering wheel.

Jesus! The The A/C control is minimised AT THE TOP OF THE DISPLAY 😂😂 You don’t need to get back in to the menu, its right there on the right of the screen......there’s a sub-menu for ALL of the controls on the top of the screen so you don’t have to go poking around, how did you not see this? I can see it from here looking at it 😳😳 oh and there’s two cup holders in the rear armrest!

Not much use for driver and front seat passenger. You do have to wonder how a long term tester could miss basic items like a/c controls. I've had my 308 for six days and worked it out pretty quickly- and I've never owned a car with a touchscreen before.

But 3 years on from your comment. It’s quite a timeless dashboard. When you look at the golf. People preferred the buttons but it looks dated. Then they have the same design but touch screen button and it helps keep it look up to date. But now they are copying Peugeot and totally ridding away with physical buttons. It’ll help over the as the car gets older.
@BenzinioB
@BenzinioB 4 жыл бұрын
@@KING0SISQO That still doesn't change the fact it is stupid idea... Just more stupid people copy it! In some modern cars it is virtually impossible to set simple thing like a temperature for example without risking crash, only the "safety" gadgets prevent all those idiots from serious injuries and possible death! While the exterior should be sexy and modern the interior should be first and most functional and less distinctive!.. but I have no doubt people are idiots and don't care about that if there is one more screen to play with... :(

The fuel consumption is clownishly high for such a "light" car with a tiny engine. It has the consumption of a mid-size sedan with much more room, power and comfort. Shitbox.

Is it realistic though? I doubt it, probably reflecting a leadfoot tester with city work thrown in. I doubt it would achieve the claimed 5.2 though.
