The Subaru isn't just the only affordable mid-sized off-road wagon in America, it's the only affordable midsize wagon period. For 2017 Subaru has tweaked the go-anywhere wagon with adjusted trim levels to sweeten the deal further. If you're looking for a quirky alternative to a run of the mill CR-V or RAV4, this is it.

Looks like a very practical, all-round car to have. Thanks for reviewing it, along with all the bells and whistles that comes with what looks like a high trim package. I was at an autoshow that featured that vehicle and I'm amazed that there are very little blind spots on this vehicle. You can actually see what's outside of you without depending on a camera to direct you. I wish many cars these days are like this, along with being well-built and car-like.

The difference with Subaru and the others is Subaru actually [want] to make a better vehicle. Most brands are happy to meet the lowest bar to compete but Subaru strives to raise the highest bar. We are very happy with the Outback and bought two. The best car for Canadian driving.

The new touring trim is really nice on the Outback. My mom bought her first Subaru, a 2015 Outback 2.5 Limited in December of '14 and in October she traded it in for the new 2017 Outback 3.6 Touring in brilliant brown with the saddle leather interior. It's super sharp on the inside and she really likes the extra oomph of the 6 cylinder. It doesn't seem to drone like the 4 cylinder would under heavy acceleration. Plus Subarus hold their value well or it did in her case. She used the guaranteed trade in value program they have and with 21,000 miles on hers at trade she got better than the KBB excellent price at the time and it gave her plenty of equity to go towards the 17. I have been very impressed with Subaru in general based on her experiences and would consider purchasing/leasing one when my current lease is up. Hopefully they have CarPlay by then.

I bought one of these this year and we love it. We opted for the upscale interior and it is nicer than most of the comparable foreign alternatives. The safety features make it easy for our son to drive if needed and I feel better about him being safe. We have the 3.6 L engine and it rides great on the highway with plenty of go.

Best review of the Outback I've seen. You didn't get much into the infotainment stuff like most others do, but you really nailed what I needed to know about drivability, handling, power, etc. I especially liked how you compared the Outback to it's competitors. Few other reviewers do that unless it's specifically an A vs B review they are doing. I'm not sure if I could handle the lower and more reclined seating posture of the outback, but I am definitely interested in trying it out now. I'm not sure if you might not want to get a little more into what the significance of the boxer engine is and how it would be different from what you would find in the Volvo or the Volkswagen, but I liked how you covered the all wheel drive (Subaru Symmetrical All Wheel Drive) quite well. Thanks too for pointing out the pros and cons of the binocular camera collision avoidance vs the radar in other brands. Awesome work - not just a professional-level review, but a bench mark that even well-established reviewers like Consumer Reports could do well to emulate. Other main stream youtube reviewers don't even come close to your work.

The six-cylinder engine is every bit as smooth and quiet as the in-line six engines I owned for 20 years from BMW. While it does get worse fuel economy than the four-cylinder, the improvement in quietness, smoothness and acceleration are well worth the price of fuel economy.

Alex, I just returned to this review as a refresher on the Outback. Very good and detailed as always. I think Subaru must have heard you and others, because from what I understand, the 2019 has some improvement in sound deadening and other factors. I’m holding out for the 2020 model this summer, crossing fingers that it will get the Ascent’s turbo. Hoping that you will compare that vehicle to Murano and Edge which seem to be more in its category.

I took a brief test drive in an Outback at the Houston Auto Show this year. It was my first time to drive a Subaru and I have to admit, I really enjoyed the car. It wasn't a very long drive but after reading all the comments on how slow the 4 cylinder was, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this car seemed to perform. I know it's no hot rod but seemed more than adequate for anything I'd need. As for the CVT, I don't see the problem. I've driven other CVT equipped cars and never had any issues with this droning thing so many seem to complain about. I wasn't in the Outback long enough to get a good read on it but it seemed fine to me. One of the roads we drove down was in pretty poor condition. The Outback just floated over the bumps and potholes. Way better than my Rav4 would have done. I tell you, the Outback is definitely toward the top of my list the next time I'm in the market to buy!

@@jeebus022 Here is the thing. I just bought a 2019 outback in April and it is a 2.5. When I hit the gas that car moves fast. Some people may think I am crazy but I am telling you the truth. I do not tow anything and that engine is more than adequate power. Love the car. If people want real power, go with the 6 cylinder. I am quite content with the 4 cylinder.
@smallnuts2
@smallnuts2 4 жыл бұрын
I have a 2015 rav4. I'm thinking about trading it in for the new outback. Maybe get the xt . I think the xt can tow 3500. If not its 2700.
@Intrepid175a
@Intrepid175a 4 жыл бұрын
@@smallnuts2 - I think you're right, the turbo engine is rated a bit higher for towing although I've read some things that suggest caution when towing with a CVT transmission. That's not necessarily a Subaru thing, but with CVT's in general. I would also consider the turbo engine but I live down at sea level so it's not really a necessity. Now if I lived up in the mountains, the XT would be a the top of my list.

We have a 2014 model, last year of the previous generation. When we were shopping, we looked at the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Honda CRV, Mazda CX 5 and the Outback. With 2 little ones, cargo area was almost top priority, and Alex is right on with his observation that the cargo area of an Outback is the same size as a Grand Cherokee. When I told the Mazda guy we were also looking at the Outback, the look on his face immediately dropped and admitted they were great cars.

I have had my 17 Outback premium 2.5 for 1 year with 30,000+ miles an no problems other than minor trim defects. I have taken it on the Mojave road here in so cal 2 times this year including the 3 foot water crossing. I have also done most of Diablo in Anza Borrego(traction control cannot be fully disabled just dulled). It’s been on three wheels several times on trails most comparable would drive past. I drive it over the Ortega highway back and forth to work daily and get 30 mpg average. I did upgrade the rear sway bar to the 21mm STI version and it drives awesome. Not time coolest but probably the best car l have ever owned and the best value.

Both our Outback and Forester Touring are 2019 year models. Both are awesome vehicles. My wife’s Outback has only 28K miles and my Forester has just 12K miles. It’s 9/2023, so as you can see we don’t drive very much. At my age my Forester will probably be the last vehicle I’ll ever need to own. The 2.5L now has 182hp. The 25 year models are supposed to be offered with a Toyota hybrid system.
