Favorite has to be the eyesight. Least favorite has to be the voice command. Its ok but could function a lot smoother.

Agreed. That was something I didn't get around to mentioning... I couldn't get a single address to load properly through voice recognition.

I totally agree! Let me change something by feel instead of having to drill down thru menu after menu, and then having to look at the screen to know where to touch to do what I want.

I also agree. Give me a knobs! I hate everything being touch screen. I like the Subaru’s climate control setup. Keep it simple!

Climate controls shouldnt be buried in an infotainment screen.Many many real people hate thate, and they have a point. Thsi is the first time ever I heard someone complain about it.

Nice, Egan. Did you go with a stick or a CVT? And what are your impressions of whichever transmission you bought so far?

Family Wheels I have the CVT and think it works well. It's not going to beat any cars off the line, but for 90% of the driving I do it's fine, averaging 23-25 mpg/city and 30-32 mpg/highway. Going up steep long grades is its kryptonite. I love all the space and it handles nicely. The ride is very smooth.

Family Wheels Yes the 4 was okay with me and wife driving in town. Good for a single person who is using it part time for weekend camping etc but not strong enough for 3 girls plus the wife (four women 😢) & myself a V6 is needed.

Ditto. But i drive like a grandpa and try to squeeze-out max efficiency.

I just traded in my 09 Forester for a 2018 Outback. Granted, it was nine years old, but the materials are so much nicer in the new Outback and I got the base model. Ride is more comfortable by a long shot, and you really seem much more insulated from the sounds of the road and engine in the new Outback.

Certainly the Forester XT was the more lively drive, in my mind. I'm not sure how much of that is the turbo and how much is the CVT, though. Thanks for watching!

Hi Taka! If you have the money for the pretty significant price differential, we LOVED the Allroad. It's sporty, efficient, looks fantastic and has a first rate interior. But the Outback comes in at a better buck and has a larger interior (second row and cargo capacity). If it were my dime and I had the extra money on hand, I'd lean toward the Allroad.

@@FamilyWheels I think the manufacturers are banking on customers not keeping cars as long as they use to. Unfortunately the ones that are going to be paying the price are the people that buy these cars used.

Dan H tough one, Dan. I was so impressed by that Mazda. Gorgeous interior with some great fuel economy despite the rather roomy cabin. But the Outback will have better resale and is a bit more car like. How are you leaning?

I've been making my list of pros and cons that matter to me. So far it looks like this: CX 9 advantages: +7 Luxury, "Sportiness", rear storage (when 3rd row is down), elevated screen (It looks odd the way they implemented it but I don't like looking down at a screen when driving), heads up display, sun shade for the rear passengers, sport shift not on the steering wheel - people like paddle shifters but I found that when driving twisty mountain roads, they can be a pain to keep track of their location especially coming out of a hairpin corner. I've accidentally down shifted instead of up shifting more than once and was just glad I had no one on my tail. Outback advantages: +8 Less expensive, established reliability, shorter and lighter, usable roof rack, Xmode (not sure if Mazda's sport mode helps in certain situations), rear heated seats, slightly better fuel economy, large useful fog lights (not sure about the small ones on the Mazda) Unknowns: I haven't used either infotainment systems. I like that newer systems will let you monitor engine information (oil temp etc) but not sure how flexible the GPS systems are when you want to vary from your destination or just check out the map to see what's near by. How well the Mazda i-ACTIV system works vs the outback. I have a steep driveway to get out of and with 1 to 2 feet of snow, the outback gets me out (most of the time). Wondering if the extra weight and length of the CX 9 would be a problem here. I'm still leaning towards the outback (primarily for the price) but the CX 9 is really tempting.

We love our Volvo but yes, you will find it a bit costlier to repair than an Outback. So far, ours has been pretty rock solid.

This is a tough choice and different people are going to have different answers. In my opinion, if you want more storage space, second row comfort and a smoother ride... the Outback wins out. If you want a sportier feel, a vehicle that's still made in Japan, and aren't as into the wagon-styling of the Outback... go for the Forester. Let us know what you wind up deciding on! I'm curious now.

Yes we did. This is actually our 3rd Subaru in 2 years from the same dealership. We have had two Forrests in the past, an 04 which is still on the road and a 2015. Both great SUVs but thought we should try a step up and try the Outback and wow.. The best cars I've owned in 30+ years fo buying cars. The dealer through in a top level trailer hitch, wheel fender trim and remote starter.

Family Wheels The Forester is a taller vehicle overall. You are right about the outback being a little more spacious unless you get the Forester without the moon roof which is actually larger. I've been asked about this before but I just don't think enough people would be interested in doing a full up review on an eight year old car! It's also incredible dirty! But here are my thoughts, Anselmo: - For a one car family, it is perfect because it's not a huge SUV that we hate driving in the city but it still offers tonnes of room for dogs, kids and stuff - The T6 is a peppy engine but, compared to more modern engines, it is really quite thirsty. We average 12.5 L/100 kms which is way behind much larger vehicles at this point - Reliability has been fantastic. We've just had to do routine maintenance on it - It's great that it can tow 3500 lbs (we have a small trailer) but it's a very thirsty car under load. The engine needs to work hard with constant turbo spool. We've actually discovered that great big pick-ups are more efficient at towing than our Volvo - Seat comfort is top shelf - The second row in our car has the optional built-in booster seats. We're not using them yet because our kid is too small. But for families, this is slick kit - It's not a great cornering car. There's a fair bit of body roll because of the jacked up suspension - But because it sits high, and because of its amazing AWD system, it is a fantastic winter driver - The various drive modes (comfort, sport, etc) don't seem to do anything to the performance of this car Hope that helps!

I can see how people might think that. It does look a bit cheap but it's totally worth it if you're taking the car seat in and out a lot!

Family Wheels I have a 1998 and 2010, my wife's. The 2010 isn't that much larger when they are side by side. 2017 is only an inch or longer and wider than 2010. They use optical illusion to make it seem like it is larger when it really isnt. My 1998 has almost new suspension and so it isn't sagging like most 1990s Subarus you might see. It is a big ass car when you see it next to the 2010, side by side, same size. It just seems smaller, but it is an optical illusion. It is a 70 cubic foot cargo capacity vehicle, just like the Volvo V70, which I had right before I bought the Subaru and Subaru is the same size as the 2000 V70, which I had. i had a picture of them together and both cars are the same size. Volvo again uses optical illusion and most people, including me, would think that 2000 V70 is much larger than 1998 Subaru. Nope.

Your probably right! However, inside there has been big changes and the new ones just keep getting larger!

That certainly wouldn't hurt. Approach angles may be better as well. Perhaps an off-road type could chime in here?

I think what you will find is the Forester is the better vehicle off-road. From what I have always read the Outback has 213mm and the Forester and XV have 220mm of clearance, perhaps your right and this has changed. I like to think of the Outback as the family wagon that you take adventuring and camping. Gravel and highway is where the Outback shines, the Forester however is for the younger slightly smaller family that still does similar adventuring, however the Forester shines in slightly rougher rockier environments and has that slightly higher stance in the corners on gravel and on the highway. The Forester is perfect for adventuring and city driving, the Outback for gravel travel and long trips! Love our Outback overall, oh and not bad go on the Aussie accent, lol, we are from down under! Thanks again!

RPM at 110 kph is about 1700 and I've gotten 800.3 klm to a tank of gas. 2017 Outback Premium 3.6r is the best car I've owned so we bought two of them.

Steven A. Button HG issues were fixed almost two decades ago. Oil consumption was a very limited issue, 2% of cars from 2011-2015 had it.

92K on my 2015 Outback. Never low on oil. Oil level is consistent from oil change to oil change.
