With the death of Scion, the Toyota brand finally gets a sports car back in the lineup. Meet the 2017 Toyota 86, mechanically similar to the Subaru BRZ complete with a high-revving naturally aspirated flat-4, a slick-shifting 6-speed manual, and some of the best handling characteristics you can buy for under $30,000.

But I read a lot about how fun this little cheap, under-powered car was to drive when there was (gasp!) a turn in the road. And then I found out what this little car running on basically Prius tires was about. You can throw this low mounted flat four into turns as hard as you want.... it punches thru with so little effort. It is a sports car. Not a muscle car. A sports car. Turns...curves....this is what makes these little cars such an absolute joy to drive.
@shifted1978
@shifted1978 5 жыл бұрын
frank2398 those damn tires wear forever also. I have 41000 on mine I don’t recall the depth from my last service but they have a lot of miles left ....if longevity and mpg are your thing anyway. Which it’s not if you buy this car. I’m that rare asshole that bought a small sports car to commute to work in so I like eeeking out miles per gallon sometimes. I easily get 34 on the freeway. And sideways as shit making my daughter smile doing donuts. Best of both worlds. My ONLY complaint with this car is it must look evil to lay people. They all think it has 1000HP and 1.21 gigawatts and shit.

this looks way better than the brz and old frs imo. this is a sports car, sure those luxury features would be nice but people buy this car for the way it drives more than anything. only notable I'd like to see is replacing old scion screen with toyota entune and filling the other side of the steering wheel with some buttons.

$30k plus 4 banger with only 205hp and a basic bitch interior. These cars blow, my 8 year old infiniti g35 sedan would smoke this car. For a few thousand more you can buy a real sports car a 370z.
@HodsBroo
@HodsBroo 8 жыл бұрын
Alright clearly you don't know what the purpose of a sportscar is. They're suppose to be nimble and have spirited handling. The 370Z is a boat compared to the frs. Not to mention it's cluckly transmission. Get your facts straight bud.
@StraitClownin909
@StraitClownin909 8 жыл бұрын
lolol a 370z is a boat? I've tracked a 370z it's not the fastest car out there but it was pretty nimble as for the gearbox not perfect but it works and the car is wayy faster than this overpriced "sportscar". If you want to go slow and have good steering feel free to blow 30k on this. Your money pal. You can spend 25k on a miata and have the same handling and I'm pretty sure close to the same power. ijs.
@HodsBroo
@HodsBroo 8 жыл бұрын
speed doesn't matter as much if the car doesn't execute it's purpose. even if it did, you could buy and 86 and strap on a turbo kit for less than the 370z so your point is invalid. enjoy your shitty driving position & inaccurate heavy boat.
@moldyrefrigerator
@moldyrefrigerator 8 жыл бұрын
I have an FR-S. Before I bought it I've test drove a 370. I wasn't impressed. Sure, it's fast in a straight line, but the visibility was awful, the shifter wasn't great, the clutch wasn't great, and did I mention that the visibility was awful? It felt large and heavy when driving too - it was difficult to place the car accurately. If you want a large, heavy car that is very fast in a straight line and around a track, I'm really struggling to see how a 370 beats a Track Pack Mustang GT. If you want a light, nimble car, the 370 really doesn't work for that either. It is a jack of all trades and master of none. Finally, there's the ugliness factor, but I will admit that aesthetics are largely a matter of personal opinion.

You can tell all the money went to the driving dynamics because the interior looks as if it was just thrown together with no plan or development money. From the aftermarket infotainment to the previous generation Toyota Yaris climate control knobs. But I guess you can forget about that since it's fun to drive. It was like I was watching Sam Haymart all over again.

Actually the simplicity makes it timeless and clean. The interior design doesn't look clustered or outdated. It's just simple and clean. Also there are small details in the car that are actually pleasant if you've owned it for a while. For example, the knitting on the steering wheel is perfect, the arm rest is fairly comfortable, and the seat is driver-orientated. After a while, you begin to appreciate small things that you never notice before. Everything is practical and nothing is useless in this car.

im watching this waaaaaaay too serious, but then you said "and the backseats are still on the tiny side, really reserved for just, uhm, your friends with no legs" really got me. good one right there. anyways, I think this is waaaay better looking than the new brz, the only downside is the interior accessories. yes I get it, people buy this for the feel and the way it drives. But hey, it's still a good option to have.

I figured I’d jump in. I own a 2017 86. Bought it new in 2017, and I have 64k miles. Overall, the car is great. I personally prefer the “lower rent” interior of this car, as I don’t need an engineering degree to operate the climate control or the stereo system. The car also gets about 40mpg if you cruise on the highway. Not a bad little car. Fun when you want it, gas saver when you need it.

The seats, key, spoiler, instrument cluster, additional buttons on the steering wheel, head unit, climate control dials, backup camera, parking sensors and esp settings on the 86 are all optional depending on your country and budget. If your country offers the GT86- The seats are available in red/black, in alcantara/leather or cloth. You can have the keyless entry, rear wing, full botton range on the steering wheel, head unit, climate control, and esp settings that the US only offers in the BRZ. Parking sensors are standard, the camera is optional.

Kromeification it does sound louder and the tone is very nice. no rasp either. it could be a bit annoying for long highway trips because the final gear is 4.3 vs 4 in the previous year. but the sound and the improved acceleration makes it more fun on the exit of the corner

Oh, thanks! I'm happy to hear it's a bit louder but still smooth sounding without all the rasp. I bet the shorter final drive improves its acceleration out of corners nicely as well! I might get one of these with the TRD exhaust installed from the factory, and maybe the TRD lowering springs...

Toyota did the head unit area right, where Subaru added that piano gloss black, toyota kept it uniform with the rest of the dashboard. However, the head unit itself sucks. Also, I feel like both the Subaru and the Toyota fronts look great.

The pianoblack matches with the glossyness of the headunit in the BRZ which looks more luxurious in my opinion, compared to the cheap-looking "granlux" material in the 86. The shiny headunit just doesn't look right with the granlux material.

I remember when I first immigrate here in 90, my young sister bought for me Toyota SR5 hatch back and 5 speed manual transmission. Wow it was fantastic car for me at that time. Engine T100 seemed to last ever. This was used with 75K in odometer I rode until 7 year later and odo coming 250K then for a junk car 150 dollars. Toyota makes manual transmission is so great. Swear to god I did not know this company still keep manual transmission until I watch this video. By a few of cars I rode until I bought Nissan SR in 17. CVT transmission is so great too. I am thinking maybe next year I will buy 86 back again with manual T......Love it....(cop's speeding ticket watch out too...lol)

I've only been driving for half a year and just got my red p plates and I've been driving a gen 3 Holden barina, I got used to the feel of it. I've been looking at rwd coupes for ages and saw the 86 twins and fell in love, on the internet. Then today I went down to Toyota and actually sat inside a 2016 gts 86 and its was fucking amazing, everything about it is perfect, the throws into gears were so short, crisp and clean, even into reverse. It has 106 more hp than my barina so it's plenty quick for me, only thing I don't like about it is it has back seats, I want to rip them out but it looks nice with them. The seats are awesome, the shifter and handbrake are close to the wheel. The interior is far cleaner and more comfortable and compact than the barina I'm in love. Plus it runs the same engine as a wrx so you can run the same turbo for more power, I think when I do decide to upgrade the power though I'll aim for 500 horses, aaand that'll mean I'll need to replace the engine block and a few other bits and bobs

Hey keep it up! You're living the dream minus the fact that you live on the east coast. The car manufacturers are all on the west coast, specifcally Southern California. If you ever make it to Hawaii reach out! As a new to me (used) FR-S owner the question is would you say that the new car is worthy upgrade to the old one?
@theredline
@theredline 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! One day, I hope to end up in Southern California, it'll be hard to leave the East Coast but it's time for a change. So asking if you should upgrade to the refreshed model from your old one depends on a lot of factors. The most important answer is if you still have a lien on your new [used] FR-S and if so, how much you are paying monthly. If yours is paid off, then I see little reason to make the upgrade. However, if you could upgrade to the 2017 and not increase your payment by some ridiculous amount, it could be worth the jump. That is, unless you completely love the changes on the new one and are willing to spend the extra money to get them. It really depends on what year yours is, how many miles are on it, and how much you really want the 2017 model. Hope that helps :)

Did that for a total of 4 years before going to work for Zipcar in their corporate office as a fleet coordinator, which I did for a year. Took me 5 years to do Redline full time, but it certainly is a dream come true! Expect a video on the new Civic hatch in November.
