The orphaned Scion FR-S has been rebranded as the Toyota 86 for 2017, complete with a pretty sweeping refresh. But can a tiny sports coupe actually work for daily life? We take a look on this week's review.

Really nice to see something like this reviewed here. Mostly because I've been interested in the car ^ ^. Also, there is usually no doubt that an SUV is OK for a family, but not that many people dive deep into 86' practicality.

This was such an amazing review @Family Wheels. Love your sports car test. Great work! I have a Genesis Coupe and my little guy has loved it since 2 years old (now 7). It's great to be able to not punish yourself for having kids and they are still comfortable.

So good to know Toyota is the one who built the transmission. If Toyota would just engineer and built their own flat engine, I would buy it right now. The Subaru flat engine just can't win my vote of confidence. Great review by the way, thank you!

huh? it is an all aluminum naturally aspirated 2.0 liter, what is so complex about this? as long as you stay stock there is nothing to worry about. and it is actually aisin, one of toyota's major suppliers, who developed and manufactures both the automatic and manual transmissions, which btw was originally based off the s2000 6 speed.. 86 is a unique package so ya better buy one or else you're going to miss out as theres that chance toyota goes either totally forced induction or hybridization for their next generation vehicles...or if you want to wait for the next gen supra which is actually a bmw....subaru doesnt sound so bad anymore :)

Great review! The lack of a trunk button is interesting. My 2017 BRZ Limited has a physical button to open the trunk. One of the many subtle feature differences between the manufacturers. Another one is the BRZ lack of mudflaps. They're just not an option from a Subaru dealership. You have to get them from a Toyota dealership and get the ones for the Scion models because of very slight differences with the Toyota 86 rear bumper.

You think the visibility is bad in a coupe ? Try ANY modern sedan on the road. Every single B pillar is so wide because of air bags. This car is a welcome view. You are the only person I've seen that actually complained about visibility. Plus not many people complain about road noise because they have the radio on.

Definitely not for everyone... just look how many different types of motorbike classes out there. If you like the nimble go-cart feel with supreme handling get one!

holy shit, nice review! I'll suscribe! Btw, I have some doubts... The suspension is very stiff? I have a Ford Fiesta (the normal one,, non st, rs, or what ever) Is this 86, way stiffer than a normal hatchback? And how do you see that car as a daily car? is it possible to live with it or it is stiff and noisy and it will drive you nuts? Thank you!
@FamilyWheels
@FamilyWheels 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub! As I mentioned in the review, the suspension is less harsh than I expected but it is a sportscar so don't expect a silky ride either. But I think it's liveable compared to some others I've tested. It is really quite noisy in there, though. So prepare for a bit of a yelling match between you and your passenger once you get it on the highway.
@farhan007

Octavio Gasparutti sporty hatchbacks are going to have stiffer suspensions because of how high the center of gravity in those cars are since they are based on normal economy fwd platforms. Since the 86 has a very low center of gravity, it doesn't need overly aggressive spring rates to be flat through the corners. It's why sports cars like Porsche Caymans can have relatively smooth rides and still be flat through the corners.

Octavio Gasparutti I had the Frs for two years and at first I could not believe how stiff the suspension was..especially at low speeds but at Highway speeds the harshness of the suspension went away. Great handling car. Loved pushing the car through corners with the Rwd.

If Paul recommends this car for your growing family, he has lost the plot or has begun a mid life crisis 😂
@FamilyWheels

Ha! Don't get me wrong, this is the least family focused car I've tested to date. But its ability to accept a car seat AND the fact that it took all the stuff in our trunk test was a surprise I didn't expect... and maybe a little midlife crisis.

Nice video, quality like many say superb. Context excellent as well.Am hoping it's still around in 2018-2019 when am planning to shop around...for a lower cost sport's car.I hope they tweak the back window blind spots some...not many talk about that point in reviews and was one thing I was curious about.(If you ever test it in your Ontario winter, let me know...)They better keep a key feature like yours since the button start up feels so lame on cars these days to me...

Is this a car that can be owned for 10 years? 14 years? I've had my Mk4 GTI 14, going on 15 and it is doing just fine. Is the 86/BRZ capable of similar longevity? I have a 6.8yo, but when we take him with us, we use our CX-5 so my car is usually a single person commuter. I'm contemplating a VW Wagon, but I can go 180* and go this (BRZ) route becuase the car is for me.

Older models have been recalled for a stalling issue but it's a problem that has since been resolved. Long time owners seem happy with their overall reliability.

For families this is and "and" car. Period. Even if the man wants this, the lady beside him who is likely the fiancee/wife of said man would likely steer him towards that Corolla or Rav4 sitting next to the 86 in the showroom instead. Personally I'm convinced nobody older than 10 should ever sit in the back of a compact coupe. I rode in a friend's 2014 Civic Si coupe once (another friend was along & he Rock paper scissored me for the front seat...I lost) and after 30 minutes I could feel my back hurting from hunching over or bashing my head against the rear glass/headliner.

Mr_ NutZ Thats Canadian dollars. Here in the States the 86 is 26 grand and 6 grand cheaper than a Mustang GT. They are different type of cars though. The Mustang is a fast pony car but the 86 drives more like a gokart. Very light and very nimble.
@benbonaparte4431
@benbonaparte4431 7 жыл бұрын
Farhan Chowdhury If we are honest a mustang is just a choice for somebody, who wants a cheap car. Its crash test reviews are horrible, its engines are already 10 years outdated and that 2.3L ecoboost nothing special either. Just another murican car. As much plastic and steel as cheap as possible.

+Blake Swan these are cheap cars, hard to design any car under $40 K "beautiful" just more or less aggressive...previous front end looked good but the new 86 front end has some great angles..no doubt looks much better in person..

Wait, there are 2 interiors for the toyota or at least in my country is that way. The FT86 which has the ugly and cheap interior, like the one in the review (also non led front lights and no fog light in the bumper) The GT86 which has a really nice interior (same as the brz), keyless entry and start up, led lights in the front, fog light To be honest, i think the interior of the FT86 is really ugly and the one in the wrx is better but the GT86 wins in the interior against the wrx GT86 t1-cms-3.images.toyota-europe.com/toyotaone/gben/5-GT86-Interior_tcm-3060-796148.jpg FT86 cars.usnews.com/static/images/Auto/izmo/i2320635/2017_toyota_86_0_dashboard.jpg Srry if my english is not that good and if it's a bit messy but I hope you can understand it!! cheers!
