Frankly I'm impressed that you managed to squeeze that much out of the Focus! Of this pair, I'd still take the Golf though. Looking forward to the Ioniq vs. Golf! See if you can manage to swing that comparison in the winter :-) Not enough winter EV tests out there!

Fantastic video guys! I ordered my new 2017 e-Golf on Saturday (get it in Dec/Jan hopefully). This reduces my range anxiety since I have to drive 202 kms for my first leg of the drive. Plus you pointed out some amazing features which I wouldn't have known about.

Nobody ever mentions how the camera on the VW's stay clear and clean because they're hidden. Makes a huge difference on the quality of the image.

TheStraightPipes I just meant the videos you guys are producing are beginning to transcend "just a car review” like another show I love. And I don’t know of another channel with content like this. There’s magic here and I feel like someone’s gonna notice and you guys will get big. That’s how it seems to me. Every time I watch your videos i get that feeling again. These are adventures and this channel feels like one of those things you find and love and then eventually it blows up. Maybe blowing up just means 800K subscribers and making a living off of KZfaq, but someone's gonna notice.

I've had to take a leap of faith on mine because there aren't any dealers in my area that stock them and lots of videos on the Golf R come from the UK which have a lot more variants than we do here in Canada so it'll be nice to see a Canadian-spec one for once.

Ahhh.. why to buy used electric cars ? that is a bit dumb if you ask me.. and nope prices for e-Golf are not that lower a new e-Golf starting price is 40.000 euro (that is about ~ 48.000 $) a new Tesla 3 starting price is 35.000 $.. since these guys tested new cars i wanted to be on topic.. so yeah i hope you get my statement.. ( ;_;)

It's quite awesome to own. 200-225km typical range, the quietest car you'll own, and at BC's electric rates vs BC fuel costs, will pay for itself (vs the ICE Golf) in about 50,000km. One thing they didn't touch on is that you can pre-program it to warm/cool the car on a schedule, so you walk out to your garage, and it's all toasty/warm for you in the morning.

I heard an all new Focus is coming for 2019. This upcoming one would be delivered out the gate for electrification in mind (this prior car released back in 2012 is more of a conversion job)

Great video, as always. The extra push on the accelerator is called the kick-down mode. A few other marques have this such as BMW and Mazda. Also, the BMW i3 lets you set maximum speeds when in Eco (130 kph default)/Eco Pro (90 kph default) modes.

Most descriptive evaluation of electric cars that I have ever seen. If I was getting any electric car, I would have to settle on a hybrid and not all electric. If my driving habits were different, would be the determing factor.

I think the sweet spot right now is plug-in hybrids!

yeah but the thing with hybrids are that are getting heavy loaded by the electric batteries beside the overall mileage distance between charges in full ev mode is much lower than in case of a full ev car and the govern helping system is way better in case of the full ev car so that is stupid to have the electric in a ICE car beside very few hybrids are really good (i3 with the range extender, Golf GTE..) so in this case i'll wait for Tesla 3 tanks

I would pick the VW e-Golf. I think that both these cars are good, but like many things, it comes down to personal preferences and a little bit of acceptance on the features. Even more exciting is awaiting VW's new I.D. hatchback EV and the I.D. Buzz.

Mike Burley sorry man your response to me comes after 2 years regarding this matter.. Anyway since then I did change my opinion little bit because Tesla 3 is not perfect, it has it's own issues (if you watch fast lane you will see what I mean.. for a small trouble clients must wait so much on delays for parts delivery and the total repairs costs could reach high values it means could not worth to wait to be repaired specially if is the single car in use for a small family).. so I'm from Europe and in some countries Tesla chargers are not even mounted yet (right now at half of 2019) not to mention dealers or service warehouses for spare parts, so it will take twice amount of repairing a damage compared to USA it not worth for me to get a Tesla 3 here..

eGolf lacks liquid cooling. For that reason, the Focus is the better EV. Also, the Focus comes loaded standard.

On my 1.5 Ecoboost Focus, if I run it on 97 km/h on highway it will be a 4 l/100 km fuel consumption. And my range will be between 600 and 800 km. And to refuel it, it will take a staggering :30 seconds. I am so not ready to go electric regardless the tech in the car.

Haha yep, that would be an eGolf. We're getting more and more chargers. Won't be much of an issue soon. Only need to solve the charging time!

Kergami I don't think so. Fast charging ruins battery life. They keep it slow so that the car has a longer overall useful life.

Yeah some guy with a Tesla used up all the "Supercharges" that Tesla allowed so that he couldn't screw up his battery

It completely makes sense on the GTE and the EV. Where the R should have had the "performance metrics" screen (which they fixed, iirc, 2017 and on), early buyers have the Blue Score. They won't re-code it, either. Thanks VW!

I agree about steering wheels, every manufacturer should really carefully decide button size, press feel and layout. I'm in newer model of vehicle which now has buttons about 1 x 0.7 cm in group of 6 on each side of wheel. After over year of owning it, i still have to sometimes look to see what i'm pressing, just groundbreaking failure . The previous model had giant rocking buttons bigger then my thumb with center smaller button in each sticking out, very easy to feel what i was doing

I've been watching EV comparo videos for a month trying to decide how to replace my 2013 Focus Electric, and most videos are complete crap! You guys boiled it down in a concise yet hilarious way. Seriously well done, especially in such a niche segment. What was the total range for the eGolf and how many miles past "pull over" did you get out of the Focus? I got about 1-1.5 miles extra from my Focus Electric on my white knuckled drive home from the dealership at 10pm in 29 degree weather.

Between these two and the Hyundai Ionic I'd take the Ionic, BUT! on the *used car market* the Ionic is hard to find, but these two are not, especially the Focus. Check Cargurus, carvana or Carmax. They're all over the place for HUGE savings (both of these cars can be found for less than $15000).

i once went out with my petrol car and drove on the red tank an it ran out of power ... weird how that happened. I tool it back for a refund ;)

I'm so glad it depleted, in a good way, because nobody every explains what happens when it runs out. I don't even know what happens when you run out of gas. You just roll with it though, which is cool. SEE WHAT I DID THERE?!

Hey Yuri and Jakub! Quick clarification.. kWh or 'kilowatt hour" is a unit of energy, like a liter of gasoline, or a gallon of diesel. A "Kilowatt" is a unit of energy expenditure, or work bring done. Ergo, a 1kW motor is around ~1.3ish british horsepower, and a 1.875kW hair dryer outs out 1.875kW of heat energy.. and it would take (1.875kWh!) of energy to power it! (: Hope I helped!
