I've watched a lot of reviewers and Alex is top of class. He stuffs an amazing amount of good info into a short time. No wasted words.

I bought a 2019 Accord Hybrid Touring two weeks ago and love it. I've read reviews on KBB and Edmund's sites and the reviews hate on the fuel economy. I've noticed that the reviews were submitted in winter where every hybrid does poorly not to mention the winter blend of fuel. I bought mine with 160 miles on it and it's at 500~ miles on it now. I filled it up with only three of ten bars left and paid $19 for a fill up having driven over 450 miles. The car calculated my mileage from my trip odometer reset to zero after my first top off leaving the dealer to be 45 mpg over 450 miles. I did the math at the pump and got 46mpg in real world driving. The car isn't broken in yet and I'm getting 46mpg! I love being able to go three weeks between fill-ups. My 2016 Malibu Premier that I sold before the Accord purchase would say I'm getting 30mpg give or take using the same resetting of the trip odometer at fill up. Doing the math on the 2.0T I couldn't do any better than 27 mpg. Chevy over estimates your mileage while Honda underestimates and THAT is a pleasant surprise.

I ordered and picked up my 2018 Accord Hybrid Touring last month. Outstanding, good looking car. The advertised 47/47/47 is not totally accurate. Driving conservatively I wanted to see what I could get. On one trip I got 55.7 mpg. But average HIGH 40s and low 50s. As infrequently as I gas up I may have to add fuel stabilizer to my gas tank. What a GREAT car. It's fun to drive, quiet, well made and comfortable.

Nice to see someone who cares to explain how the car works and actually understands it. And even the difference compared to Toyota and Hyundai. Other motoring journalist should pay attention here. This is important information in regards to the long term maintenance cost of the car. This new Honda Hybrid system is simple, effective and brilliant. Really an EV with an engine in place of the big battery pack and optional mechanical lock up at cruising speed for efficiency.

Just want to say kudos to Alex for talking about the regeneration in this car. I haven't seen/heard anyone else mention them in their reviews and I appreciate him pointing out the difference between eco and sport. I too think it would have been much better for the regen settings to stay in eco mode, and reset in sport mode.

I just bought 2018 hybrid EX-L It a excellent car for daily drive. This is my 3rd Honda Accord 2003 Sedan, 2011 Coup and 2018 hybrid oh so much technology, comforts, driving dynamic and fun to drive. Average MPG I got around 46 to 53.4. I like Honda cars very very reliable and safety features.

Bought my new base trim 2019 hybrid model a year ago for just under $21k (basically inventory price). 30k miles and never taken it to the shop for anything other than oil changes and a tire rotation. Range varies depending on the weather, driving conditions and your driving style. In the summer, peak range is ~610 miles, and in the winter ~440 miles for me. If you're able to get a good deal like me, than hands down its a steal. Only downside is you will have to pay separately for the spare tire.

Excellent review Alex, and your concise delivery of all those details...not easy. The timing is great for me too, I've been waiting for this. Disappointing, the Hyundai 'swoop-style' choice over headroom like my 2013 Sonata, literally a p.i.a., low uncomfortable seats and headroom (but trouble-free!). If I can get past that incongruous rear end, the Accord or maybe Clarity might just suit me. Love the trunk space, that's been a dealbreaker.

I just upgraded from Touring Hybrid 2017 to Touring Hybrid 2020. I can"t even tell you how much I love this newer model the trunk space for my clients wheelchair.

I have owned this car for 3 days. I never owned an Accord before. I am blown away. The think sips gas like a fine wine. Very beautiful interior. It’s amazing what comes standard nowadays. The temp controls actually turn the color in the direction of the temp you are going towards. Ex. If your raising the temp the color turns red. If lowering the temp the. Ring turns blue. Also another cool thing, once your phone is connected to the car, in my cars my podcast just automatically starts playing. Super cool. Hitting stop on the steering wheel or the dash actually stops your phone from playing. My last car was a 2008 Ford Taurus. Cars have come a really long way. I used to say I want a car every 10 yrs but the rate of advancement is ramping. I need to change it to maybe 7 yrs. Great car. Best I have ever owned.

Most of the people around me aren't only cross shopping between brands, but also determining which car to get in a specific brand given their budget. It would be great to hear your opinions on the tradeoff between a loaded insight and the EX trim of this car or something! Thanks for your great reviews

Alex, you're very thorough and I appreciate your input. I just wish that you would give a sample of the audio. I heard the audio system on the accord is bad. If I knew what it sounded like, I'd could either cross it off or add it on my shopping list next month when I go car shopping.

Very very good review as always, never miss any from alex. I own the clarity and was deciding between accord hybrid and clarity. Exactly as you said, i fee like honda's hybrid is still a hiding gem compared with Toyota. It is complicated but strikes a good balance between performance and fuel economy. I love my clarity since it is really a upscale ride than average Hondas.

A few things to consider between the Honda Accord Hybrid and the Toyota Camry Hybrid: Both 2018 models have full trunks as the batteries have moved under the rear passenger seats. The Accord has 17cf of trunk space, the Camry has 15cf. The Camry comes in 3 trims, with the lowest trim LE getting an updated Li-ion battery pack and smaller wheels that gives it the best mpg's among any Camry/Accord hybrid trim. However, the SE and XLE trims come with an older NiMH battery system and bigger rims, giving it the worst mpg's of any Camry/Accordy hybrid trim. The Accord comes in 4 trims for the hybrid version, all receiving the same Li-ion battery and same wheel size which essentially keeps mpg's the same across all trims (EPA 47 mpg). If you are looking for a non-taxi version (i.e leather or sport cloth interior, premium sound, moonroof, media/navigation) my pick is the Accord hybrid due to the mpg bump compared to similar Camry trims. Also, as mentioned by another post, the Accord gets CarPlay/Android Auto which although I've never used these systems, I would much prefer to have a phone based map system to a factory navigation system that easily gets outdated and can sometimes cost money to keep updated. Plus Apple has announced the new iOS coming out soon will expand the apps to Google Maps and Waze, another big plus. The hybrid systems themselves are very different, with the Toyota a more conventional one where the engine powers the wheels and helps recharge the batteries. The Honda one seems unique in that the engine is only there to charge the batteries, unless you are at a certain speed where it can engage itself into the drive system at highway speeds when you need a little extra oomph. In essence, the Accord is similar to a less powerful Tesla if the Tesla had a generator because the Honda gets a powerful 180 hp, 200 ft-lb torque electric motor whereas the Toyota is somewhere in the double digits in performance acting more as a boost to the engine. That means no gear changes in the Accord, just a uniform and smooth acceleration from the electric motor, with the engine coming on to charge the batteries (some people find this experience strange because the engine might kick on when you are not asking for power as it doesn't directly drive the vehicle). Lots of standard safety features for both cars, although the Honda has more features. Both cars got perfect crash test ratings, where the Camry got a "+" rating due to the top trimmed XLE's better headlights, but otherwise all things are equal. Based on several auto articles and youTube videos, it seems to be a unanimous consensus that the Accord is more fun to drive, has a nicer interior, and better features. Exterior looks for both have their pros and cons to me. I believe the base model Accord hybrid starts at a lower price, but the Touring trim is the most expensive although my mom went with the EX-L trim which seems to have everything you would really ever want and still comes in less than the Camry top trim XLE. An added driving dynamic feature on the Accord which I really found amusing was the addition of the flappy paddle regenerative braking selectors on the steering wheel which as a manual driver, I enjoy having some input into driving a car. They are not necessary and my mom will probably never use them, but you can use these paddles to increase and decrease the regenerative braking while coasting, which allows you to dedicated almost all of your braking into regen for the batteries and prevents you from having to use the brake pedal except to come to a complete stop or emergency situations. It defaults to mild regen on coasting, but the most aggressive regen will bring you from 50mph to a crawl within a couple hundred yards. Note, both cars regen the batteries when using the normal brake pedal also, but you do lose some efficiency if you brake hard. Also, the Accord hybrid is faster off the line than the Camry hybrid, with 0-60 around 7.0s vs mid 7's in the Camry. The Accord hybrid is actually faster than the 4 cylinder non-hybrid Accord. Usually Toyota offers better deals and interest rates than Honda. We got the EX-L for $29,000 (MSRP'd at $34,000 with dealer packages). As for real world MPG's, my mom's 15 mile commute to work every day on ~50-60mph roads (not interstate) with some traffic lights, she's frequently texted me about how she topped 60MPG on her commute. Personally driving the car on a couple of road trips I was able to consistently keep it in the 50's.

Just bought a 2021 Touring Accord Hybrid, it makes my 2013 Camry Hybrid feel ancient. Only wish the IIHS had influenced Honda to put better headlights in the top trim. Looking to test the adaptive suspension in sport mode soon.

Since Honda refuses to offer the HUD, street sign recognition, and rear heated seats with the manual transmission, I stopped shopping for the 2.0T Manual and started looking at the Hybrid Touring. The smaller wheels (and more sidewall), lack of DI & turbo (maintenance issues), and super smooth power delivery are just a bonus. I've been waiting for this review (from you) for several weeks since test driving them for myself. Thanks, Alex!

Was kind of hoping you'd compare this to the Honda Insight. The lower two trim levels for the accord line up price wise with the mid and top tier insight trims. I guess the Accord Hybrid is more of a competitor to the Insight than the Insight is to the Accord though.

I hate that screaming engine in some hybrids eg Honda Accord, Ford Escape etc. The 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid is very quiet at least in the cabin compared to the previous mentioned vehicles. Alex please review the 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid, in fact a direct head to head comparison of the 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid vs 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid vs 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid would be sweet.

I went ahead and got a Honda Clarity instead. But I got a tiny lumbar seat cover and I charge for free at work with a normal outlet, so free commute. He was right about how much the tax credits made it way cheaper then the Accord. I got a older radio, fake lumbar and just honda lane watch instead of BSM, but it was worth dropping for the thousands I saved and free commuting. Thanks Alex.

I recently bought a 2018 Accord to replace two cars a 2017 Audi A4 which was a lemon, and a 2009 Camry Hybrid. I drove the Accord 2.0T and the Hybrid. The Hybrid is wonderful around town. But on the freeway and up hills the Hybrid engine buzzes horribly and struggles to perform. I chose the 2.0T which is about as fast as my Audi but infinitely more reliable.

Getting rid of CVT was smart. My G1 Insight has problems with the belt-driven CVT wearing out early .

This hybrid is 1/2 decibel less at 69.5 and gets an A. That seems a fairly large rating difference for such a small decrease in decibels. Did you find the difference that noticeable?

"No compromise hybrids" is getting to be a long list! I think it's time to recognize that hybrid technology has matured and there are no significant compromises associated with the technology anymore. Even the 1/2 inch of rear headroom in the Camry will go away once their lithium-ion battery production meets global demand. Now I wish makers would let us customize hybrid vehicles and EVs more. Adjusting regen is a good start, but I'd also like an option to eliminate creep for maximum efficiency. I'm glad you plugged the Clarity, I think it's a great model that Honda should push more aggressively. IMO it's odd you put trunk space as a plus for the Camry and headroom as a minus when the Camry has a smaller trunk and more headroom than the Accord.

Hi Alex, awesome, thorough review as always. I drive a car with a dual-clutch transmission. In my car, the downshift paddle is on the left. I could use a downshift to engine-brake and help slow the car. IMHO having the increased regen (more slowing) done with the left paddle is intuitive for those of us with run-of-the-mill paddle shifters. (I have never noticed paddle shifters with the downshift on the right but my experience is limited.) It's a small matter but I like what Honda did there. Thanks.

Great review as always! I have really bad back pain and am looking for a car with a comfortable drive. You mentioned that the Accord has a firmer suspension. Are the seats/suspension comfortable on long drives?

Alex, I was just wondering if you think the 17" wheels helped ride quality vs the 19" on the non-hybrid Accord touring models. You rated the 2.0t Touring's ride an A- as well, so all I can figure is that comparison was against other two liter turbo/v6 midsize sedans whereas this review compares the hybrid accord vs other hybrid midsize sedans (which generally have more sidewall than their non-hybrid equivalents).

A correction at 0:48, sadly highbeams are halogen unless you get the upper lost Touring trim. Ironically, headlight rating for non-Touring's LED+halogen is better than Touring's full LEDs lol.

Just signed up for waiting list on the CR-V Hybrid. My dealer said it's based on the Accord Hybrid but with a two motor system. I was looking at Teslas, but they are just too pricey for my utilitarian needs.

why the instrument cluster shows the tail lamps of old honda accord instead of the new tail lamps in the tachometer area ?

As far as 2020 trim level, the touring now gets ventilated front seats, bumping it up to $36,240. The EX-L at $32,690, Ex at $30,320, and base $26,370. Imo, the EX is the bang for buck because you get heated seats, but cloth, and I believe getting the heated steering wheel gets leather wrapped,and fog lights. Rubber steering wheels are the worst. Otherwise, it's leather interior & 10 speaker, and wireless apple/android integration (whoopie do?) in EX-L.

8:29 I'm guessing you meant to say "They're heated, but not ventilated" 19:24 Heated Rear seats are listed in the Touring Trim. Plus Sofyan confirmed that feature in his review of this 2018 Hybrid. Not to mention, they are 3 level heated seats which is a nice added convenience.

Uggg.. nicely updated interior.. and they flopped the interior space by lowering the roof line for sporty looks. Also.. noticed the fold down seats... That's great over the previous gen. But they put the latch hooks, one the SEAT BACK.. where it will catch on whatever cargo you stick in there.. they should have put the male part of the latch hooks on the car body.. where it's out of the way. Please suggest to Honda to fix the problem of not being able to turn on all of the interior ceiling lights with one button from the front. For some reason this cannot not be done with the Civic or Accord. It can be done on Honda's SUV's and mini vans. Safety seat anchors are included but no ability to turn on the rear light from up front to check on young ones. This is a major mistake. Also no AUX cord connection is another major mistake. Lastly the audio system has no way to view the current folder after a track has been selected without going to the beginning audio menu. Pressing the back button when playing a track should take you to the folder the track playing was selected.

@alex - Any comments on the engine noise, i want to get this one but worried about the weird gas engine noise at high speeds

Doing research on my next commuter. Is the main difference between 2017 and 2018 is that the battery was moved and the fuel tank shrunk? I am looking for range/days between fuel ups over cargo space.

Looking for opinions for the regular gas engine 2018 Accord vs the Hybrid. I'm having a hard time deciding which to go for. Hey Alex I love you review on the two care I’ve been looking at, I am a bit surprised that you never mentioned the Accord doesn’t come with heated steering wheel in any trim level. I found out when I test drove the accord. The other car I test drove was the Subaru Legacy and I like both cars but the legacy touring has things that matters more to me like AWD and of course heated steering wheel. Despite a CVT I find the turbo Legacy is very responsive though the Accords turbo might be a bit faster. What do you think about those two cars?

Hi Alex, Comparing the Accord Hybrid system vs the Camry hybrid system, do you think the Toyota system is slightly more reliable? In the Toyota system, the gas engine is always available to power the wheels while the Honda is system will only power the wheels above a certain speed. If the electric portion of either system fails for any reason, I can still drive with the Toyota, whereas the Honda will need to be towed. Am I mistaken?

I have a clarity. I've bought $7 worth of gas (4 gallons) in about 900 miles of driving my honda clarity. Plug in hybrids are so much better for environment than non-plugins.

Alex on Autos: what would you recommend, the Honda Accord Hybrid or Honda Insight?

Does it have strong regeneration when you lift off the gas pedal or do you have to press the brake pedal to get regenerative braking to kick in? Also, does it have creep like an automatic or does it feel more like a manual without creep?

I purchased my Honda Accord Hybrid 5 months. I live in Eastern Massachusetts and most of my driving is surburban, not highway. My trips are relatively short, I rarely drive more than 10 miles to a destination. I have been averaging in the hot months in the high 30's and in the Fall in the low 40's. I do have a spare tire in my trunk. I have been quite disappointed with the gas mileage. Which mode do you recommend driving in (Regular, ECON, EV or Sport)? I have not used the paddles, would they help?

with this exterior design slop back,- it could be practical sport back or lift back (as an audi 7 or Stinger) , wagon will be most welcome bcs it is very practical! (in Europe most of the cars -wagon or liftback/sport back practical hatch stile)

I just can't get over that roofline, I love Honda, I love the previous gen Accord - but no matter what, my eye goes to that roofline. To know that they did it for 'style' makes it all the more terrible given the loss of headroom on top of the look! I'll be considering Nissan and Toyota for the next lease because of the new Honda look.
