Edmunds gets a First Drive of the refreshed 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid.
Edmunds Associate Staff Writer Will Kaufman drives the 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid in sunny Malibu, California. For 2018, this 377-horsepower hybrid luxury sedan receives an updated exterior design, an upgraded interior with new seats, improved driver aids, a smaller battery, and a big price cut compared to a fully loaded 2017 model. But is that enough for the RLX to compete with the newest generation of luxury rivals? According to Will, "the powertrain is an impressive piece of engineering that performs well in the real world, and the RLX Sport Hybrid is surprisingly fun to drive. Lowering the cost of entry was smart, but even with all the updates the RLX still lags behind its competitors in some important ways."
Q: When will the 2018 Acura RLX be available?
A: The 2018 Acura RLX is currently available.
Q: What's the fuel economy of the 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid?
A: It gets 28 mpg combined.
Q: What are the Acura RLX trim levels?
A: For 2018, there are only two trim levels: the front-wheel drive RLX P-AWS and the all-wheel drive RLX Sport Hybrid. The P-AWS comes with a 310-horsepower V6 and rear-wheel steering, along with most of the essential luxury trim you expect from a base model. The Sport Hybrid comes standard with quite a bit of additional equipment, including driver aids, premium audio and other interior upgrades, and costs $4,000 less than a similarly equipped 2017 model.

7 speed dual clutch transmission based on the 9 speed in the NSX. The same materials found in ALL luxury cars today. 377 hp. A great sound system. High quality leather. Only thing this car needs is the turbo and it can push over 500hp. But people still wouldn't buy it. Y'all crack me up. Cry that Acura went too boring in styling, they upgrade the styling now they went too far. Cried that they weren't making high power cars, cry that they are making high power cars. Cry that the old ones were faster even though the new ones are way faster. No one is ever satisfied. Go sit in the car, feel the dash, push the buttons, turn on the radio, take it for a drive. Y'all judge and haven't even looked at them in person.

I purchased a CPO 18 RLX hybrid back in Dec of 2019. It has been perfect and zero issues. Really nice to have 377hp and +28 mpg with today's gas prices. The RLX is a driver's car if you like to drive. Pretty much 100% all complaints are about techie stuff like info-tainment or ugly rims. Never heard any complaints about the powertrain+mpg combo.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much attention this new RLX was getting at the auto show this past weekend. Prior auto shows, barely anyone even looked at it. But the entire Acura section was filled with foot traffic and very interested people, based on the conversations I heard. The new updates to the design actually look pretty good.

From the reviewer's language, a listener might believe that the NSX Sport Hybrid was produced before the RLX Sport Hybrid, when in fact the KC2 Legend (RLX Sport Hybrid) was on the road in the 2014 model year. His comments about the infotainment system are *spot on* and I sympathize. :-) This was always the worst thing about my 2014 Sport Hybrid, and I cannot believe they went through the MMC without improving the infotainment system. I was interested in the comments complimenting the suspension because the 2014 car's suspension drew criticism for harshness. I know the springs and swayers are different. Perhaps they also tweaked the suspension pickup points. 70,000 miles on mine, average 32.1 mpg (!!), and it's a solid, wonderful car.

I have owned a Honda accord, a Acura vigor and my last car a 2003 Acura TL types S, what a blast to drive .I have watched this car company lose its way over the years while comfortably relinquishing the gains it has strived to make. Performance is no longer important to Acura, but of course that's what it was built on. Sadly the dealerships continue to hound me to buy another one of their lackluster products. I decline. I have been waiting for Acura to wake up , but it seems Acura is in a COMA !!!. ASHES TO ASHES, DUST TO DUST !!

Ram trucks is using something similar now called etorque. They replaced the alternator with an electric motor with a belt to aid with take off and initial acceleration and it gives up to 3 more mpg which is great. Dodge will get etorque as well so it seems Honda /Acura are way ahead and you may see a Honda accord with these options soon and it'll probably be slightly cheaper to so fear not you will be able to purchase many cars like this soon.

@@V1ralB1ack Honda and Toyota make great cars that common people could buy and drive without being drained in the budget. As for the Korean cars being Japanese knock off, it does not take much to buy a car and try to reverse engineer it. And anyone can make a very reliable car given enough time to put it together. The superiority of Japanese brands is the level of achievement on what we call first time quality rate. This is the key on successful mass production of high quality cars. The quality of the materials, leather upholstery etc., the added gizmos and gadgets don't reflect the true quality of a car. Rather, the reliability and repeatable performance of the functional parts with minimal maintenance is the tell tale sign for high quality.

The TLX will have a sport tune suspension, stiffer construction, better weight distribution, tighter steering, spoty seats, improved brakes/tires, and sport tuned powertrain (engine/trans/sh-awd). The RLX is tuned for comfort with a softer suspension, more road isolation, wider seats, a lot of front end weight with engine/EV components and more interior space for adults that just happens to have 377hp/341tq available. The MDX and the RLX are very good and competitive in their segments. If I am looking for a premium, high quality, reliable and safe automobiles. The MDX and RLX will fit all requirements but Acura is definitely not a luxury brand like Lexus or Mercedes Benz. Especially with the lexus offerings, the reliability, lower cost of maintenance are on par with the Acura, Lexus is better choice and has more room to move upward. Examples- Lexus offers V8, twin turbo V6, full size real off road luxury SUV with big V8, luxury sports Touring Coupe with V8 or Hybrid. Lexus wins because the brand is more appealing to affluent potential buyers. Acura offerings are too conservative and limited forcing customers to look elsewhere like Lexus dealers for more choices.

It is a performance hybrid like the NSX or MDX Sport Hybrid; not a mpg hybrid from Toyota, Honda, or Kia. It has all weather sh-awd, 7DCT, 4.9 seconds 0-60 mph, and Sport mode for max power. The hybrid powertrain is used in a similar way as turbos or supercharger: but, with way better mpgs for similar hp/tq. Stick with Toyota or Korean brands if you want a mpg hybrid.
@cheez1012

@@mrgold3591 But to put that into perspective, a C7 Corvette can achieve a little over 20 mpg with a V8 N/A engine making 460 hp in 6 or 7th gear with highway driving, and the i4 ecoboost mustang gets 29 mpg making 330 hp. You may argue that the RLX isn't competing against those two cars, which is true, but the Corvette and Mustang both achieve similar hp/tq figures per mpg. I think the Acura should do better considering its a hybrid, even if its AWD, has 4 doors, and the hybrid system is used for performance over economy.
@mrgold3591
@mrgold3591 Жыл бұрын
@@cheez1012 Unfortunately, people that are looking at the RLX Sport Hybrid are cross shopping something like the GS 450h or Q50/Q70 Infiniti hybrid (or even the non-hybrid versions). Keep in mind the RLX Sport Hybrid gets the same city/combined/hwy mpgs. I don't think the Corvette or ecoboost mustang had the same city/combined/hwy mpgs? You could; but, be very uncomfortable drive with 4 adults in a Corvette or Mustang on a cross country trip (you just have to do the trip 4X in the Corvette to shuttle 4 adults). Like I said before, Acura could either use turbos, supercharger, larger displacement, or hybrid powertrain for more power. Only the sport hybrid powertrain gave them the benefit of improved mpgs with the hp/tq increase. It is not a mpg hybrid system and the RLX has improved handling, higher performance, and better mpgs over a similar sedan with around the same hp/tq engine that uses turbos, supercharger, or larger displacement.
@cheez1012

@@mrgold3591 I believe the ecoboost mustang has combined 29 mpg and the corvette has 20 combined. As I mentioned in my previous comment, I understand that these two cars are in totally different categories than the RLX., but they have similar hp output per mpg. Divide the amount of hp by the mpg it gets, and you can see how much hp there is for 1 mpg (I know this dumb calculation is very basic and is not used by car manufacturers, I'm just trying to show how similar the ratios are). The Corvette comes out with 23 hp per 1 MPG, the Mustang 11.3 per 1 MPG, and the RLX at 13.21 per 1 MPG. My point here is to just say that the hybrid Acura doesn't achieve better MPG per hp compared to other vehicles, despite being a hybrid. Comparing it with an actual competitor to the RLX, the V6 Lexus ES350 F sport gets 26 combined mpg (25/34 city/highway) making 302 hp, which is only 2 better than the Acura. No, it doesn't have AWD for the V6 trims (AWD only offered on hybrid models) and no it doesn't do 0-60 in 5 seconds, but economy wise, it does so much better than the Acura even being naturally aspirated. The RLX was meant to fill in the middle ground for someone wanting a fast car t can also take a family grocery shopping, but there aren't many buyers who want that and quite honestly, this Acura doesn't excel in anything that makes it desirable in general, so that's probably why it got discontinued. Adding on, it is quite a solid and unique car for what it offers but buyers in this section wouldn't see any reason to buy it other than brand loyalty especially when it looks like an elongated ILX. As a person who has a strong passion in obscure and unique cars, even I would think twice before buying an RLX because the cars Acura has been producing for the past decade (other than the NSX) isn't something I would really want to buy. I would rather get a Honda.

@@cheez1012 The Ecoboost Mustang is 21/30/24 city/hwy/combine for 310hp/350tq. I really think you are missing the point and getting lost in the stats of the hybrid powertrain compared to the having a turbo, supercharger, or larger displacement. You get the same performance and hp/tq with improve mpg with the hybrid powertrain. That is it, no more, no less. Expecting more mpgs from the RLX is expecting more mpgs from your 460hp corvette and being confused and hung up as to why you can't get the same mpgs as a sedans. The RLX isn't an economy car and it is a 377hp/341tq sporty sedan that happens to get the same city/hwy/combined mpgs as a side effect. The 3.0L Twin turbo CT5 has 360hp/405tq and only get 18/26 mpg, 5.1 seconds to 60 mph for awd. It might surprise you to know most car manufacturers follow a similar design language with their SUVs, CUV, sedans, and coupes. Folks purchase the ILX or TLX because it looks similar to the RLX. The same goes for BMW, Audi, M-B, Jag, and Japanese and Korean brands. It is A-OK not to like a certain brand of car because it just doesn't appeal to you. Your arguments sound like "I don't like apples because they are not tomatoes" and really don't make any sense; but, to you.

Bought the ILX, wanted a civic without the turbo and CVT. Turns out I dodge that oil dilution issue since all the kids today want lawn mower engines so long as they have a turbo. Slapped a Ktuner tune and I am all good.

I've been dreaming of a 400whp Turbo i4 hybrid on a CVT 3000lb 4 passenger car for a while now. The dyno chart torque would be a horizontal line at 325lb from 1000rpm to 6500rpm. It would have adaptive suspension and carbon fiber wheels+drive shaft to reduce rotational mass. I'm thinking of using a Mitsubishi Mirage as the base. 🤔 It'll be an NSX Mirage! 😍

There's no point for this to exist when the 2018 TLX is its biggest competitor. Garish interior, so-so exterior, old as shit technology. No wonder they sell and will continue to sell less than a 1000 a year. Why is Acura so Arrogant and risk-averse?

I do my best to root for Honda/Acura but good grief... who in the hell is making these design decisions. It's like they are trapped in their own little bubble of friends and co-workers all agreeing with each other and nobody wants to offend anybody. And the result you get is shit like this. My 2014 Accord Sport looks better than this and the new Accords. GET OUT OF THE FREAKING BUBBLE, talk to the customers who have supported the brand and get real feedback from real people.

This is such a letdown. Acura is failing fast! They slap lipstick on a pig to try and remain in the race. They need to ditch everything but the MDX and the TLX. Those are the only 2 vehicles they need. They can gain momentum and be a niche sport luxury brand. Their styling needs a major update, interior qualities need to be less tacky and Honda like. They do not have value for their price.

I'm very disappointed with Acura because they dropped the ball you have Hyundai build a luxury car brand Genesis that is giving everybody a run for there money the RLX should've been like the RL with the SH-AWD system standard with a twin turbo like they did with the new TLX Hybrid system I dont trust with reliability but hey it is what it is a nice car that nobody buys to bad

report back to us about how long that ebony steering wheel stays "ebony" colored - stupid color choice for a steering wheel...this car is NOT WORTH the $62K asking MSRP; no flipping WAY!...it's nice to see the '17 accord body being reused in the '18 RLX since a lot of folks liked the '17 accord body lines...The grill needs to go back to the beak/shield as the new one reminds me of a Buick; it doesn't flow well with the jewel led headlights...Acura is a hard sell especially when a Honda "Touring" trim gets you 90% of the way to an Acura...why do auto makers leave the infotainment systems languish? its one of the easiest things to update, if not in design, but in function, especially if the same controls are going to be used for years and years...Acura is not relevant now; they have 6 models including the NSX; so 5 passenger/family focused vehicles...mother Honda better hurry and inject some adrenaline into Acura or it will be what Buick is today, a pseudo lux has-been no one really cares about or wants to drive and be seen in...sad :(

ehhhh.... I'll stick to my 94 Legend Coupe.. They need to hire some people from America who customizes cars with good taste for some help. The exterior looks like a Honda Accord the interior looks like a Honda from the early 2000's. It's the same criticism everytime they introduce the new version of this car you'd think Acura would listen by now. So if your reading this Acura no one wants a luxury sedan that looks like a big Accord, what happened to that dope concept car a couple of years back? That should of been the new LEGEND. Speaking of LEGEND take those alphanumeric names and burn them everyone hates them. The people want an Acura Legend, not this b.s. Furthermore at these prices you have to compete with the Germans. Not the 5 series not the e class but the 6 series, the cls, the a7. Step up your game, you should be embarrassed that your best cars were 25 years ago.

This model will never be able to compete against any of its rivals. If you could even call them rivals. There’s nothing classy about this car. It’s like a “luxury car” for a much much younger and tacky crowd. Not a luxury car, not a sports car, not a competitor for the Germans.

The external proportions are bulbous and non-athletic, considering it is labelled as a Sport Hybrid. The infotainment is 2 generations behind, and no where in the same league as the Germans. The double stack jewel headlights are hideous. The RL/RLX has never really sold, and Honda should put it out of its misery. It looks like a TLX that needs to go on a diet.

Acura and Honda died in the early 2000s. I feel Acura's biggest misstep was trying to be Euro making all of their cars just letters. Acuras used to be all over the road, Legends, Integras, TLs etc...Now a days you rarely see one. They are all ugly, no spirit, no style. I would take a 90's Legend any day over this car and those things still demand a decent amount of money in good condition!
