Alpine A110, France. Cayman 718, Germany. Exige, England. 4C, Italy. This has got to be my favorite segment in the market: baby exotics. My money would go towards the 718, but let's face it, all 4 are fucking brilliant and deserve love and attention.

Agreed. I'm still going Cayman every time (and I've hated the 4c since day one), but the competition and cars in this segment are outstanding. I love that there's something resembling an A110, and they're calling it an A110.

more enjoyable on the open roads than the big 700 HP exotics. Why ? Because you can't use more than 20% of the potential of the chassis and engine of a 700HP car on the open roads! But with a 250 HP and lightweight sports car like the alpine is, you can use a lot of the potential of the car, so you enjoy more. period. people that disagree are simply novices driving crap car and don't know what they are talking about.

I'm with you 100% on this one. The most refreshing car this year, much more interesting than the 600BHP super saloon and the the 350BHP Hot Hatches. It fills the gap between a Cayman and an Elise.

I love this. It looks exotic enough to feel special, but not so exotic that everywhere you go people would stare and take your picture. The front is reminiscent 6th generation Celica and the back kind of reminds me of an Audi A7. As Lotus Elise owner, this car is very appealing to me. Love the design. Wish it had a manual.

Which is something Renault was unable to do for decade. Eeeeeveryone in MIII RS is installing shortshfiters as the "standard" gearbox is bad (if i stay diplomatic....). I think that is the reason for dct, shame tho.

Well done Alpine, saw this at Le Mans and Goodwood FoS 2016 so clearly taken the time to get the setup right. Almost a pity Caterham didn’t press on with their own version.

I'm so glad this is proving to be a good car. Alpine is just a cool, cool brand and I really want this to succeed. This seems like my kind of car too, transmission choice notwithstanding. Probably the 2017 car I most wish I could drive on roads I know well.

Amazing car, thanks for showing the chassis, that time was definitely not wasted. I've gotten a bit tired of hearing about this or that new hypercar with an even nuttier price tag than the last one, not that I dislike them all, the Aston Martin Valkyrie is a real wonder, for instance. This car will be accessible to far more people though, and it's clearly a good one, so my hat is off to Alpine.

Great eycatching looks- plenty of retro touches- easy French ride over bumpy roads- even live with the gear box- certainly better than an Alfa 4c for every day- but better than a 718? Looking forward to that twin test-

This looks like what a 2017 Toyota MR2 would look like (if it existed). The bumper design is like a combination of the 86 and LFA with the light pattern of the SC 300.

In the previous Honda Civic, the driver was sitting right on top of the fuel tank. And in almost every other car, your children are. The Cayman has it's fuel tank in exactly the same place btw.

Have been waiting for this one. At 50k(ish) it MIGHT be too much. You can get a 718 for less with PDK OR manual with more inside. It might even be closer in price to a 718-S. Thanks Autocar!

I love the lightweight approach. I love the look of the design. It doesn't sound like you think the DCT is particularly good. Whilst I love that you're excited by this car it's almost as though you're deliberately ignoring the fact that Lotus has been doing exactly this with the Elise, Exige, Europa, Evora since 1996. The current Elise is 244kg lighter than this. 21 years of lightweight, bonded aluminium cars with gearbox options and class leading steering feel. Worth a mention?

I went to see the media preview of this car, and upon having a look and in a passenger seat for half an hour, I think this car is perfect except for two things...(in my opinion) 1. it's an Apline remake of a hero car, but the original one still looks 10 times better....if this one looks exactly like the original one but with the same new specs, I'd say this car is somewhat a must buy. 2. it's not a porsche, and it's not a lot more fun than a 2 years old 981 cayman. But the price is actually not on the lower end of the light sports car these days (depending on which contry you are from ). If I were to buy this one, I'd struggle to convince myself not consider a second hand porsche. (unless this one looks like the original A110, that one looks gorgeous)

yeah but I think people wont cross between a Porsche and Renault this car is for a niche market, There is a reason Porsche sells million and these cars struggle to sell a hand full,look at lotus and alfa both great cars.On the road u can choose to be just another guy in a Porsche or.....or that purist in a blue alpine A110( this car looks good but you must look at it in real life cause videos don't do it justice park it next to a Porsche and it will blur it out ) and your Cayman cant even walk away from it

I agree part of your reply but disagree other parts. I am in Australia, there are some Renault fans but most people love Ford and GM (Holden) here, German cars are also popular, French cars have very little presence here. So yes, to people who loyal to Renault, camparing the two are ignoring the sentimental part. I had bad experience with Lotus and dealer is very far away from my house, so I don't have much good to say about Lotus. That's why, around similar price in Australia, a mid engine small sports car, you can pretty much list out 2 big competitors in the price range: Audi TT RS (probably need second hand one or wait for price drop) Cayman (S or GTS depending on new or old, 718 or 981) Compare to these cars, A110 is slower, harder to find service centre (Frech cars have much less presence in Australia than German cars, here people love Ford and GM) and potentially long waiting car. With all of the luxury car tax and local dealer mark up. A110 money you can get a decent sencond hand GTR, it's more expensive M4, a really quick Lotus if you want to buy those, a V6 newer or a older V8 version or even a latest 4 cylinder Jaguar F-type. I am comparing all these because I just got apprved my second loan, after an investrment property, I am using the left over to buy my last fun car ( cause now i have a 1 year old, and I have to sell my old fun car) I have been spending last 7 months looking for something that is not Porsche, that surprise me. This A110 was one i was hoping that can draw me away from Porsche. I didnt get to drive A110 in the track, but i think it's not enough for me. I will grow past that car after trash it on track for 1 or at most 2 years. I am daily drive a SRT with 6.4L and I put a whipple supercharger on it, on dyno it's 700HP. I want something small, light and different but I have a relatively high standard on power, A110 is good like MX-5, but when Cayman 981 GTS is even felt too soft for me, i want something have at least some basic power and I can add power later on, but still retain that small car accuracy, good feed back that talks to me on wheel. So all these 7 months of test driving, I am going to take a Cayman GT4 with clubsports options. Will need to change the gear ratio a bit otherwise daily drive i will only shift gear once or twice. And I probably going to kill myself if 8 months later Porsche released 718 Cayman GT4 RS with 4.0 flat 6 and PDK. But hey, it's better looking than a110, it's more expensive yes, but i think it could be more fun, and it's faster.

Shopping list for the next Alpine... manual gearbox, longitudinally-mounted non-turbo V6 engine, perhaps with an electric supercharger or mild hybrid setup... otherwise this looks bang on!

I love the nerdy details Matt always reveals in his reviews. You look at the time and there's still half a vid remaining and you get excited that more is still there. I like Steve Sutcliffe but this review of the 110 is twice as good as Steve's review of the same car just because Prior gives so much more information about the steering, the gearshifts, powerband, engine noise, chassis details...this is the info reviews are for. This is what set Chris Harris apart from others back in the day. If it weren't for Matt Prior and a few other journos, I wouldn't bothering watching these reviews...

It is rather expensive, but this really is the 718 Cayman & 4C biggest rival. The combination of lightweight, turbocharge mid engine great handling sports coupe is brilliant, especially for a long time comeback. The only real sad thing is living in Canada I'll likely never see one in here ever.

Looks nice and I wish they would bring it to America (they won't) but the 4C looks better, sounds better and appears to have a more classical upmarket feel. The only reason I maybe wouldn't get a 4C at this price range is the lack of a manual transmission, in which case I'd have to get a Cayman (or maybe Elise but that's a bit hardcore for what most people want). Seems like this car is filling an unneeded space..? Thoughts?

A great car! There needs to be more alternatives in this segment, that's good. However 50k £ is a bit much in my eyes, specially for that engine. It's surely good but not overwhelming.

Needs a manual trans option and maybe even a manual steering option! Gut it and get it below 1000kg! It sure would be cool if they brought this to North America. Who is building this? Has Alpine established their own factory from scratch?

I like it alot. If it came with a manual I would very much want one. I could add LSD after the fact. It looks right, it sounds right, it reflects one of my favorite cars, it'll just need a few improvements and to me it would be perfect.
