The 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA is the most expensive Subaru ever sold in the US, at just under $50,000, once you include destination + delivery. It features a heavily revised suspension with Bilstein dampers, new wheels and tires, an aerodynamic package with a large carbon fiber wing, a chassis-stiffening carbon roof, and stronger pistons and valves for race track durability. The Type RA is limited to 500 units worldwide.
Subaru provided a hotel room, two meals, the vehicle, insurance, fuel, and track time for this review.

"Not forged but reinforced pistons" really Subaru?
@doctorwhodj

Brandon I get you. The reason they don't use forged is it's cost, also the tolerances must be higher, also. Not as good for daily driving. The heat expansion of forged is more. I believe they use hypereutectic pistons. It's better than standard "cast pistons" but not as good as "forged".

50k on a STI. As a STI owner, I say go spend 50k on a SS 1LE. They better up the hp to 400 to justify that price tag.

Greater than the sum of its parts? For $26 grand over the price of a base STI you could have a full Cosworth long block, ball-bearing turbo, and Ohlins suspension, and have change left over to pay your builder/tuner or add extra doodads to personalize your ride. This doesn't even give you true forged pistons.

Two of my friends have Cosworth long block with forged pistons. They hated having to sit there for a few minutes, waiting for the pistons to warm up and fill the bores (or risk damage) every time they wanted to drive somewhere. While I would never consider buying an RA, it'll certainly be a lot less of a pain to keep around than a very built STI

Agreed: I put about $14k into a wrx, never again, still an understeering mess just less of it with nervous handling, and I don't miss being pulled over once a month, new clutch once a year (throw out bearing nightmare), brakes once a year, tires once a year, road noise, and seemingly unending need to upgrade random bushings, constant oil consumption/blow by, tmic heat soak, and if you look at it, it needs a new tune...Never again, but the aftermarket companies LOVE wrx/sti owners because they are complete money pits.

Bilstein shocks were available in the Legacy Gt SPEC B some years ago. Had one, and the application was not that great. Really disappointed. For that vehicle, had to add a rear sway bar, and other modifications to be a bit more happy with the execution by Subaru. I was much happier with my 2004 STi.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. This is a limited run STi being sold to the Subaru loyalists who want the ultimate STi. I think it's cool that Subaru still makes limited run versions of their cars like this. I do wish they would have made it crazier. This seems pretty tame compared to their previous limited edition cars
@juanticimo
@juanticimo 6 жыл бұрын
Robert Rowley exactly. I personally can’t see paying 50k for one, and I love Subaru. Personally I could see maybe 43k tops. Just a bit above a limited. It’s an exclusive car (only 500 being made) so only the folks who want it as a collector will really buy it. I’m looking forward to 2020 however.
@bwest6275
@bwest6275 6 жыл бұрын
Well I think the point was not missed by many of us. Yes, this is a limited production STi. Ultimate...it should have been. But this cannot be the ultimate STi when many of us feel the need for more. In fact, getting a base WRX and modding it would certainly produce an STi killer for less money. The only benefit is this comes with a warranty. I think Subaru dropped the ball for an opportunity for making something legendary for a limited production model.
@MichaelSeeds
@MichaelSeeds 6 жыл бұрын
This isn't the ultimate STI. It weighs a lot more than my spec c even with all the carbon fiber bits. After 2007 they dropped the ball. The R-AR was the last great limited edition. Spec C's, GC8 Type RA's, GC8 Type R's & the 22b. That is the list of the best subaru's ever made. That being said I really do like it though, it looks sweet. Just too expensive.

Dave Taylor in NZ, when the Hawk Eye came along (version 10), that's where it started to go downhill imo (for the NZ New ones only). They got the 2.5L instead of the 2.0L. The JDM continued to get the 2.0L (they get no 2.5L). And as imports, those cars are 10x better. Higher revving, stronger engine being the best thing. I do agree that they do need to remake the car entirely. But this 2018 model is the final year of this power train.

With the Bilstein struts it’d be that it’s the first time used in an Impreza in the US. Bilsteins have consistently been fitted to performance Legacys over the years, the only Impreza that springs to mind that has used Bilsteins before is the 22B, with the ‘B’ standing for Bilstein.

If you're a huge Subaru fan I think it's a good investment. Sure you can take out your spare tire and do some tires and suspenions upgrades on a regular STI and do some more weight reduction, add a functional wing if you want, but this one has all that on it already, so if you're going to track it and want to do maybe mostly chassis upgrades but not engine internals atleast not for quite a few years, I would think this would be great for that. You get reinforced pistons which would hopefully take a tune from an Accessport with no problems and with some certain upgrades in the intake and exhaust and suspension this could be a really cool less common STI. Again I know 50k is a lot for this type of car, but in some other news, 40k is a lot for this type of car!! Most STI owners buying new are paying roughly 40 grand so if they're a huge Subaru Fanatic I don't think the extra 10k is going to really bother them especially since financing dulls the pain a little by spreading out the expense over time. Regardless I wish they made a truly hopped up version over stock, with say forged internals and 50bhp over stock and 50 or so ft lbs of torque more over stock, with the rest of this stuff and even an active exhaust or something and with some really limited edition body work. Still I kinda like it. But I've loved subies since I sold my built 94 Talon Tsi (Awd model) for my GC Impreza RS that finally has a proper EJ207 swap with all STI drivetrain in it that is now running equal length turbo manifold and around 400hp at the wheels. I love the car now. Didn't want to go overboard other than upgraded pistons rods and bearings to help longevity and arp studs for the entire engine, so i kept that simple. The whole thing took me nearly 4 years to put together though.

What the hell justifies $50K for this? C,mon Subaru, it's definitely time for a major upgrade. I'm pretty confident my 2009 WRX hatchback (I paid $25K for it, and I've got approx $10K in mods) would embarrass the RA at $15K cheaper. Subaru needs to up their game, at-least for the STI, if not for the base WRX. I have to see the track times to see if any of the parts are worth it. In the past a STI Spec C can outperform a regular STI by about 3-4 secs on a track and beats the Evo GSR of that same gen by 1-2 secs. The Type RA in the past are basically Spec C with additional parts similar to the S206-08 series. $50k isn't bad when S208 in Japan costs about $60k and those do run outperform cars that have over 100HP simply because the handling since they are the equivalent of Type Rs, track ready cars. All Production Rally Subarus use Spec C chasis. So I would imagine these Type RA would be hot commodity in the Rally scene.

Why is the car so loud when going at higher speeds? Meaning tire/wheel noise? Sounds like a thumping sound. The only reason why i'm asking is because i test drove an STI stock, and it was the same thing. As soon as it hit 70, i heard some strange thumping bass sound, as if the wheel bearings were no good or something. The car was brand new and i asked the salesman about that and he said it was the tires. Tires were dunlop. I had dunlop tires before on previous cars, i never ever had that sound. I guess it's a subaru thing?

It’s def time to go, I’ve owned 2 of them. Currently own one now. I love the sound it makes, but the technology is just getting dated at this point. In 2005 this engine was still kicking butt, however today, there’s just better tech. The new FA motor is leaps better, and I am sure Subaru will be using the 2.5l version of it for the next gen. It’s a welcome change.

2013 WRX SE You say that, but the EJ257 in this car IS more or less the same engine that's been in the USDM WRX STi since 2004. The EJ itself has been around since the very late 80s.

Damn I thought this video would make me reinforce my 18 sti sport-tech and clearly it hasnt FML well hopefully will do the bilsteins. Someone is sure gonna try and see how much that engine with the reinforced pistons will take. I would just work on driveability (cooling, wheels 18's). But hopefully the next gen will be better and not hybrid not 2 tons and make more than 360hp... ( I hate using hp to judge a complete package but damn it needs to be done for this car.

For that cost (actually a bit less), I built my 2015 STI which has 470whp with 505 torque, better brakes and suspension and sounds a lot better. It still understeers a lot, but I'm pretty sure I'd run circles around this thing at the track or any place else.

Screw fix-a-flat. It can destroy your TPMS sensor, and any tire you use it on immediately becomes unrepairable (at least at any REPUTABLE tire shop), assuming you wish to go that route. I would rather have the spare tire.
