Subaru added even more letters to the WRX STI, but they didn't stop there. The Type RA is laser-focused on track work and we test its credentials at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia.

It's also quite easy to spend upwards of $12k on modifications, if that is the kind of person you are. But consider that it wouldn't make sense to modify a limited production-run car such as the RA.
@Bones12x2

It's a lot of money but as the others said, you get more than just a 5hp increase. Also, the forged pistons mean that it will handle more power and abusive driving better than a normal STI. ......except for the fact that the 2019 STI (non-RA) has the same pistons. So in reality....just get a 2019.

Isnt it a bit weird that the third gear is shorter, but now you have to grab 5th on the quarter at a slower speed. It should accelerate faster in third and if it should get you to grad 5th, you should go faster in the end than in previous car. I suspect they have detuned even more the high rpm range .

@Brandon_Rivera

I own an 18 STI Limited. Personally I’d skip the RA. For the difference in money you can pick up some nice coilovers, intake, exhaust and an accessport. These bolt on’s alone give you better performance and sound without worrying about your warranty too much (don’t quote me on the last but my dealer has been cool about it). Also, the value of this car is always understated. It’s an ok track/autocross car but the real value is when things get sloppy. In snow, gravel, rain or light mud the STI and WRX are still very capable and fun to drive. Sure there are a million rear wheel drive beasts out there that kill it on a track but they cost more and couldn’t get you out of a jam or up a hill when things get messy. I love all cars and the couple I own all have their purpose. I am no STI fanboy but it is one of my most versatile and fun cars to drive. Not near the fastest or strongest but it sounds amazing and with just my few upgrades it still rips around and can smoke all 4 tires. Fair review but I just wish people covered full capability versatility instead of track and street only. Side note, that wing on the RA looks terrible. And no spare tire to gain less than a half a second umm, I’ll keep the spare.

How about just ditch this pos and buy a used m3 or amg for like 20,000 beat it in every category!
@Brandon_Rivera
@Brandon_Rivera 5 жыл бұрын
Fred Williams in 5 years BMWs are worth a fraction of the original price. Reliability and the the expenses aren’t worth it either. I had an M3 and it was a great car for a couple years but one of the most expensive cars to maintain I ever owned. Any little change you make also voids the warranty. Great car but not for me. Most people don’t care that much about performance. In terms of performance your talking minor seconds between a subi and an AMG. 99% of drivers will ever push there car that far to notice. And in a the messy stuff a subi would kill both. Not so much on the track though.

The man issue I have with STIs is they can’t shed the boy toy look. It’s almost like anyone over 30 driving them looks a bit out of place. Hence why I drive a G37S, probably the best bang for the buck and a bit more mature. The beautiful VQ 6 cylinder sound and power (330hp) doesn’t hurt either :)

@sneeky7 LOL the RA is the harshest ride of them all. But if you need to daily drive it with a kid, then the CTR and Focus RS are both still faster. In actuality the RA is advertised as a track car, so it should compete against other track cars, and it is woefully undergunned against them.

@@InfoumusMOBB Again, there is no point in them offering this the United States. Here in the United States, a performance car's price must be backed up with engine output and acceleration numbers, which this clearly won't deliver. Though it will shine on a twisting track or mountain road, this kind of car just doesn't sell very well here. The Subaru BRZ is a sales failure, and it was the car "enthusiasts wanted". A car that doesn't make any sense. An CLA 45 AMG or and RS3 with 1 to 3 years costs the same(or even less) and have much more of that euro high performance feeeling. Also, they are more easy to use daily and more tolerant with newbies.

ERIC K. I’d buy an RS3/TT RS with that five-pot before I bought this any day. Even the 2-4 yr old TT RS’s are just so much faster and more bang for your buck than these. I love Subaru and had an original 98 RS 2.5 I swapped a JDM EJ20 into but the prices are ridiculous for a 5.4 0-60 $50k car. No thnx

Ain't no one living that long to pay $50K for a 2019 Subaru WRX Type RA. The 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR was cheaper in that back in 2007, and it was loaded.

I had the first 98 RS 2.5 coupe and thought it was one of the most fun cars I owned. But this overpriced SLOWER than two years ago old engined car desperately needs a redesign or at least a new engine with 400hp. Shame as JDM versions over the last two decades are super fast and desirable compared to this

1997 stock base wrx would run 5.2 to 60mph/100kmh and do the quarter in 13.52. Bugeye 2001 base wrx would run 5.4 to 60mph/100kmh and do a 14.1 quarter. Original U.S.A spec Sti ran 4.5 0-60/100 and 13.1 quarter. Do you not know how to drop the clutch @ 6000rpm? Dynos are reporting 330 horsepower for the RA. Get a better test driver and test in cooler conditions.

What I learned about this car is that it’s not worth buying and you are better off buying an older one and putting the money saved into mods and get a better car that’ll kick this ones ass.

Its really sad subaru doesnt listen to its customers. These engines can easily put out more power ,reliably. Never mind simple things like an aos cold air intakes that should come from the factory with a top of the line sports car. Why the forged internal upgrades if theyre not gonna turn the bass up? Too many questions and nobody is listening in Japan. For 50k you can buy a base sti , spend the rest in mods and have something that wont get gapped by a ford escape.
