When the FR-S and BRZ made their debut 5 years ago, it reminded the auto industry that you could still make an affordable sports car for the beginner driver. Fast forward to today and the under $30,000 2018 Toyota 86 still offers all the traits we love about an inexpensive sports car. Pair it with a chassis that encourages drifting, a high-revving boxer engine, and a slick looking body and what you have is still a pretty desirable fun car. Only its lackluster interior tech and lack of refinement hold it back from being a car you drive for the long haul.

This has to be the worst review of an 86. It's a driver focused sport car, yet you want it to have every self driving feature available like a BMW has. Then talks about how it's a naturally aspirated car and needs to be rev'd out, then proceeds to complain that stomping on it in 6th it has no torque. Do this reviewer order a hamburger and complain how it's not a hot dog?

I owned a BRZ limited for 4 years. The seats are very hard and have no adjustable lumbar so although they seem okay at first, they're very uncomfortable on long trips or even extended track sessions. Unless you're on a tight, twisty mountain road (and you've upgraded the tires) most family sedans will leave you in the dust which is a bitter pill to swallow. The infotainment and stock speakers are absolute garbage so I ended up spending several thousand to get something decent. I also put in loads of sound deadening to make the car tolerable as a daily driver. I wouldn't recommend buying one unless you're rich and are looking for a weekend go-kart to thrash.

Ash S i love that too, but I hate how expensive they are considering they barely give you any extra options. This trim level is over $29K. Get yourself a base WRX for about 27K with a turbo, extra room, shift gear on the instrument panel, three blink one tap turn signal, faster, almost equal mpgs and stays at around 1200 rpm on sixth gear. Otherwise, there are still a billion options for this price range. Toyota should've priced these at around 24K imo. Good review tho!!

Owned, drove, tracked an NSX, F355, Lotus Elise, MB S 500 AMG, Toyota Supra Turbo, MR2 turbo and many other sport/sporty cars. This car is a fantastic low cost option combining most of the virtues (and defects) of those cars. Yeah, it was low on power but the handling is near perfection, so I supercharged it.....and boy what a treat to drive it now. The interior looked bland....so installed all carbon fiber parts...now looks awesome...tweaked suspension just a little bit and added sport exhaust. I still look forward to my next ride on this car every chance I have and get more thumbs up than in any of the illustrious precedent cars. Call me a contrarian but I love my FRS!!

My entire takeaway from this review is that Sofyan the type of guy who prefers to drive a shiny, cushy, drop-top Mercedes than a raw, visceral sports car. He the type of guy that prefers a soft and floaty Cadillac suspension over one that is planted and predictable. He the type of guy that doesn't mind the added weight and cost of having heated seats and butt massagers in a "sports car." He the type of guy that refers to road noise/feel and a notchy shifter as "unrefined" whereas others would call it being responsive and communicative.

The engine is maybe slightly less exciting than you would like; for the price though... get over it and slap a turbo on. Stop overreacting or companies may just give up on making us fun cars.

Forced induction will harm this car. Ruin it's weight and weight balance. Especially since its naturally aspirated engine gives instant linear throttle input for carving corners. Add a kick from a turbo and that extra weight of the charger to the front and you ruined a perfectly good formula. Until they learn how to make 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engines that create about 300 hp, this is the best we get.

If you are willing to sacrifice RWD dynamics, manual transmission, and tail happiness, you could easily get a car with more fuel economy and faster. Just buy something like a 2.0T accord or v6 Camry. Both of those are very quick well under 6 seconds, both ride well, and surprisingly they have good handling for fwd sedans, albeit both of them are more expensive. That being said the 86/BRZ aren’t bad cars by any means. They are really fun to drive for RWD. But you have to sacrifice some things to get that such as practicality, ride comfort, acceleration, and fuel economy. *Oh I forgot that the accord 2.0T does have a manual available.*

Anyone still hating on the 86 family simply has no idea what a sports car is or what it is used for. A sports car is not for rolling down the highway and flooring it, that's a muscle car. This car was built for handling and the quality of handling you get is shocking compared to cars that cost over double the price. In daily driving, autocross, or small club race tracks it's all the power you need to keep up with a surprising amount of cars if driven properly (with a tire upgrade, naturally, as the stock tires are banana peels) and there is a massive supercharger and turbo aftermarket to build any amount of power if you want it. I've thought about turbocharging in the past, but every time I realize I can barely use the power it has now in daily driving, so I'd barely get to use the extra power and in the meantime I'd get worse mpg.
@nunyabusiness896
@nunyabusiness896 6 жыл бұрын
I'm at a loss for words to describe how nonsensical your post is. I didn't know people existed that were this out of their minds with delirium. First of all, the GT86 is the most quintessential sports car on the market at the moment, to say otherwise means you don't know the definition of the word. And the handling is "just OK"? You know Consumer Reports broke their emergency lane change record, the benchmark for handling, by just putting actual sports tires on an FR-S, right? Seasoned racing drivers the world over recognize the handling to be some of the best anywhere, it's not even a debate. Second of all, the Civic Si is a wrong wheel drive commuter car with an upgraded engine, not a sports car. I don't know what planet you think a Civic Si makes 280 whp with a tune and downpipe that wouldn't lead to blowing the car up with more than a drag run, if it lasts that long. And don't even get me started on how pointless some random people's lap times at VIR is, unless you have the same driver on the same day with the same tires, you may as well pull lap times out of a hat. Drive a Civic Si if you want, it'll make idiots like you easier to spot so I can avoid hearing your absolute nonsense.
@nunyabusiness896
@nunyabusiness896 6 жыл бұрын
Sergio Aguirre I cringed so hard at all of that nonsense I think I broke my back. First of all, dude, read the first line of that article. Those Civic's tires are absolutely ridiculous compared to the drift-friendly stock BRZ tires. Not only are they wider, but they're massively softer. Comparing cars on unequal tires is something only an idiot magazine racer would do...ohhhhhhh, right: you. Second of all, shitty transmission? The transmission is one of the best out there, I don't know what broken car you were driving, but one in good shape is fantastic. And hard plastic interior? Compared to a bargain bin Honda? Please. The only reason the power feels "underwhelming" is because you have a 5 year old's perception of speed and because the FR-S's low CG and properly sorted suspension doesn't buck you around like a 25¢ kiddie ride in front of Wal-Mart you think it's slow. All performance benchmarks show the Si being around the same 0-60 and 1/4 mile or slightly slower, and that's super embarrassing considering how much better the stock tires are on the Civic. Third of all, the Type R is $10k more expensive than a base GT86 (which is the only thing you should buy, all options are a waste of money) and for that money you could have 400-500 hp with an aftermarket turbo or supercharger and would destroy the Type R. Fourth of all, comparing a "bolt on" turbo car (which sounds like a 95% swap out according to the numbers you're posting) is not the same as an N/A bolt on car. 86's are known for not making much power with N/A bolt ons, you have to go F/I to make serious power. Finally, just watch this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLGip5yj3tPPmKs.html An FR-S passing a 911, WRX, S2000, etc. with basically just a tire upgrade. Like, I just don't even understand where your logic is coming from with all of these arguments. If you're just looking to drag race, buy some old shitty Mustang and throw some parts on it and save some money. If you want to go fast on a track for cheap buy a race kart. If you want an amazing handling daily driver get an 86. If you want to look like an idiot to everyone around you, buy a Civic.

Some of us just want a car like this as a fun car as an alternate, to our regular cars (3.0T A6) and for nostalgia. These (BRZ,) are so reminiscent of proper sports cars of our youth that we enjoyed so much, take a look back at the 70’s Datsun 240Z, and the Porsche 914 2.0L amazing underrated cars.

For that price you can pick up a Mazdaspeed 3, a GTI, or a Focus St if you look hard enough. Why would you get a FR-S? The used market makes an 86 (or FR-S) completely ridiculous to choose out of what is available.

Just one correction, the 2018 BRZ models have the 3-blink one touch blinkers. It was a new feature on the 2018 models, but it is there (at least on the Limited models, like what I have). Very happy MY15 BRZ owner and easily the best car I have owned, even after a long string of high powered GM V8's. Owners of these cars simply get it. They know why they bought it and also know that any sort comings can be easily addressed by the aftermarket.Want more midrange? Buy some headers and get a tune. Better ride? then get some nice street oriented coilovers like Tein Flex-Z's. Want even sharper initial step off then swap the final drive ratio in the rear. On that last one you don't even need to adjust the speedo as the car uses the ABS sensors to measure wheel speed. You also neglected to mention that they updated the FD ratio in the MY17 Manual's from 4.1 to 4.3 ;) Also who cares about more tech. The more tech you add the more features you add the heavier the car gets and the more expensive it becomes. Then after a certain point you point at other cars like a Golf GTI and say well why the hell buy this when I can buy one of those for less? And so rings the death bell of an amazing little sports car. Toyota and Subaru know exactly what they are doing with the cars spec to maintain relevant to their target audience.

Your Corolla has a lower compression ratio than an 86. So it's fine in your car but not in the twins. The lower the octane, the easier it can ignite so high compression and low octane can cause premature ignition (knock).

Looks good. Sounds good. And HELL YES to being RWD. BUT wayyyy too many compromises, especially given what is available in the compact class. A Civic Si offers similar numbers, and Subaru's own WRX will blow this thing out of the water. Note, I did not say the R or STi versions of those vehicles that a buyer could also cross-shop. I guess one could also say something like a Mustang EcoBoost w/Performance package and Camaro 2.0T would also be competitors for very similar money...and MUCH livable on a day-to-day presence. This is classic Toyota. Very late updates to their cars and trucks, yet thinks they're competitive with other offerings on the market.

None of those are sports cars though. You could argue the mustang and camaro, all though they're considerably heavier, and with base trim engines are not what most people want from those cars. FWD hot hatches, and a AWD sedan aren't comparable. They're designed around regular commuter cars, and given more performance. If people cross shop these cars then they have no idea what they are actually looking for in a car. Really the only car that compares for the money to the 86 is the Mazda MX5. The 370Z in base trim is also comparable all though it is much heavier and doesn't feel as good at the limit. It is better equipped and has more power. A car built similarly to the 86 but step up in performance is something like a Porsche Cayman. Which is 40+K . Sports cars are a compromise, you have to give up something to be light, you have to give up something to be inexpensive.

Some of that is because of the demographics of each brand. Toyota has a tuner culture in Japan, and has for a long time, but not so much in the US. Some Supras aside, most people can't name a tuner Toyota model. By contrast, you almost can't find an unmodified WRX or STI. The culture surrounding these brands is a lot different. That's why initially Toyota pushed it out under the Scion brand, they were trying to build a youthful, tuner demographic with brand loyalty. Didn't really work. Anyway, that accounts for some of the difference in attitude.

I just bought a 2019 GT manual. Very good review. I agree about the backup camera not displaying on the head unit, because I want a Homelink mirror, but because the backup camera displays in the mirror I can't swap it. I got and installed the factory accessory armrest, and it's really nice. It does have a gear indicator, but you have to turn it on in the menu. I semi-daily drive mine, and I'm loving it so far.
