After more than a decade of sales under the Liberty model name, Jeep returned its Cherokee to the U.S. market for the 2014 model year with a very different and controversial look. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee debuts a new, more traditional front end as well as a new engine and optional hands-free liftgate. The new Cherokee makes the Grand Cherokee’s look and feel available in a more compact, less expensive package, and the Trailhawk trim can almost match the Wrangler’s off-road capabilities.
The Cherokee lineup offers 3 engines, including a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder and a 3.2-liter V6 that have been available in past versions. The new engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque that improves mileage and towing capacity, but also requires premium fuel. All engines use a 9-speed automatic, and most trims are available with front-wheel or 4-wheel drive, but the Trailhawk and Trailhawk Elite are available only with 4-wheel drive.
