Hey everyone, regarding the 0-62 time, we give the most honest possible review of the cars we test. Other outlets have found the 2019 fwd mazda3 to be in the mid 8 seconds range. It’s not a shock that the awd is heavier (roughly 200 pounds), and we definitely experienced an added sluggishness. That said, if someone can go out and do a sub 8 second 0-62 in the mazda3 awd hatch (without dropping it off a cliff) I will do an instagram story with me in a dress proclaiming you as my prince and that I need saving.

Drivetrain loss is a thing, but in this case it shouldn't be "that" much of a thing. And 200lbs shouldn't rob 2s off that 0-60 either so it's definitely weird. In the real world with a passenger I could manage a 8.2s with my 2018 2.0. Usually around mid 8s without much issues. That's with a manual however.

@@angelescamilla5841 they're not "Officially" competing with Lexus, etc. They're trying to make most of limited resources. A Torsion beam rear suspension is hardly premium. However, putting a little more detail in the interior, and giving it European (Italian) styling, they are try to build a niche that the they failed to do so in many other attempts. They are actually trying to be a VW. Premium looks at standard prices. Unlike Toyota that can sell a 85k Landcruiser, Mazda is still far away from calling itself premium.

I own a 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, love it. The CVT is phenomenal. I test drove the Mazda3 for the day and loved it as well! This is a toss up for most people. I chose the Civic due to the practicality of the storage in the back. The Mazda3 is better than the Corolla or the Veloster when comparing to space, storage, and room. Hands down the Mazda looks sexy, luxurious, and drives softly. If the Mazda had more loading space and more backseat legroom, easy choice for Mazda. You cannot go wrong with either car. Both are reliable, sporty, premium, nice rides, and quality.

If you look after your cars and do regular preventative maintenance, they will look after you. If you don't like doing that, buy a corolla, camry or civic, which are basically like an appliance on wheels.

I test drove both a top-spec Jetta GLI, and a mid-tier Mazda3 hatch w/ a 6-speed manual. Bought the Mazda. Love it. No regrets. Great car. Cargo space is a bit small. But the rear seats fold flat in two sections, so it gets useable quickly if you need it to.

@krisreilly8856 4 жыл бұрын
@@richl1319 Nope, what I ended up getting was a "used" 2018 model, Touring, which is the middle of the three trim levels on that car. I say "used" because it had just over 5K miles on it. Hemmed and hawed between that one and a 2019 Grand Touring (top trim), but Mazda actually offered a longer warranty on the used car over the new one. So lower payment by about $80(US) per month, plus two extra years on the warranty meant I went for the 2018. Really the only feature I think I'll miss is the radar cruise control that I could have had in the other one. Not that I'd use it that much. It just makes insurance cheaper, lol. Anyway, I've had it since September, and it's been great for what I need. Love the interior, and the gearbox. Have you test driven one yet?

I love your creative approach to car reviews, you guys have great chemistry and you provide a visceral, informative and entertaining perspective. I think that 186 Hp and torque is plenty in any small car, why the Mazda feels slow is more about weight and the availability of max torque (@6000 RPM) which in this comparison the Civic beats it. The weight difference is an amazing 320 pounds in favor of the Civic. Also, can we talk about the loss of the multi-link rear suspension in this iteration, a "twist beam" is very low rent in this otherwise upscale compact car.

I have a 2017 Civic Hatch and for the most part, I love it but not without some complaints. The CVT is fine, not great, not bad, its fine. I will say when you drop it into "Sport" mode you'll definitely get a bit more excitement since the car will hold at a higher RPM. But because I'm a bit of an enthusiast, I would have gone with the Manual. The Steering, I wish it was tighter. The styling of the car depends on any persons taste. For me, I think it looks energetic and fun however I do understand why someone would think its "Over Stylized" Oh and the Fuel economy is outrageous. This car does fantastic on gas. Overall, these guys summed up everything about the car that I agree with. It's awesome but if I had to do it all again, I would have to absolutely agree with these two and get the Base model GTI.

I agree the power amount for the 3 is lacking, but Mazda to my recollection wasn’t marketing it as a speed3, or a high performance variant. So to complain that it’s not a performance car is a little disingenuous. Other than that, it’s a solid video.

Compared the Civic, he’s correct. But to then bring in the GTI and GLI as other options if the power of the Mazda is a let down? That’s not a fair comparison because the 3 isn’t a performance car. They raise valid pitfalls about the 3, power being the biggest. BTW, they literally open the video hoping it was the rebirth of the speed3, which again, it isn’t being marketed as 🤷🏻‍♂️

The reason everyone is wanting to talk about performance is because Mazda was one of the top performers and, for what seems out of nowhere, they stopped after 2012 MazdaSpeed 3, but with rumors of starting it up again along with the rotary engine. So for those of us that really know what Mazda is capable of, and what has been promised with the skyacti-x, the lack of power is a major let down. Lastly some of us would argue that simply turbocharging the engine like everyone else would be an easy fix to the lack of power that Mazda simply will not do and to me that is frustrating.

There is definitely some noticeable power delivery and throttle response differences between the two, with the AWD feeling noticeably heavier and more sluggish than the FWD version. Having driven both myself, I don't think weight is the only factor creating the difference.

Honestly, saying that the Mazda is underpowered with 186 hp is crazy. I'll admit I haven't driven it, but i drive a 110 hp diesel every day and that doesn't feel anywhere near underpowered, so i honestly can't imagine this being underpowered. But then again, it might be an american thing, that us Europeans doesn't understand - here in Denmark, anything with more that 150 hp is bordering fast. I just drove the Hyundai Ioniq 5 with 325 hp and that felt insane. It has to be said though, that the Ioniq 5 is the most powerful car i've ever driven, so i guess it would feel insane. But still, I stand by my opinion, that a medium-small hatch with 186 hp psysically cannot be underpowered.

Large reason why I bought the 2021 Mazda (non turbo) is awd and non cvt. It’s unfortunate manual isn’t option for awd but it isn’t a huge loss for me. Now power wise, it isn’t a speed demon but it has plenty of power imo where most people could enjoy. I live in the north and currently we’re seeing quite a bit of inclement weather and I feel very confident driving this car on messy roads. Also something to add is that this car is surprisingly roomy, I’m 6.2 and very comfortable. No buyers regret :).

It’s been added first and foremost to boost sales and justify a higher price. Too many people have been brainwashed by TV Ads into believing that awd is always better and has no drawbacks. In the case of this car, awd should be avoided. 99% of the time the awd drive shaft, differential and 2 extra half shafts will be dead weight slowing you down and decreasing fuel economy. This car has just the right amount of pep for fwd. And if you think you’ll do well in the snow, remember fwd on winter tires will always be safer than awd on all season tires.

Mazda 3 filled that bill INCREDIBLY well. I find it a very fun car to drive. Now I won't blow sunshine up your arse , YES I did mumble some phrases under my breath about missing the speed of my other cars...but for what it is... its fine. Four months later, I decided I wanted the Premium trim or the AWD Turbo. I thought I would lose a ton of cash, but right now the used car market is so high that they basically gave me what I owed on the loan. Honestly, the 2.5 NA engine is perfect--it gets to 60 in 6.9 seconds vs the turbo's 5.7. And I don't need AWD as I'm not going to track it or drive it like a madman. It has plenty of passing power on the highway and don't see any need for my HP. So throwing down an extra $5k wasn't worth it for me. I'm nearing 50 and that's the thing--I want a quiet, comfortable cruiser. And this car is stunning to look at vs all the other compacts that are built for gen Z. They are ugly. I can fit an XL road bike in the back of my 3 and if I need more room, I'll take my wife's 2021 Tacoma SR5 4X4. Or my 1999 Lexus GS 300. Also, we've had bad experiences with Honda over the last decade and I will never, ever buy another one. And a VW is just a problem waiting to happen. Electrical gremlins galore. I bought a new VW CC back in 2011 and the analog clock broke the second day of owning it. Had to have a replacement from Germany. No thanks.

Did you drive the Mazda with the Sport mode on? It makes a huge difference on that engine.

The Civic Sport Touring has things that the Jetta GLI and the more upper range performance models really lack though. Honda Sensing is amazing, heated seats on every seat, sun roof, Apple and Android Auto, etc. These types of features are missing on the performance cars, and if 0 - 60 in 6.8 seconds is fast enough to you as well as 30 MPG average it really makes a great value. That and being a Honda I really can't see why people compare it to the performance cars, yes it's similar in price but that's not what it was made for. It's made for someone who wants a sporty but more feature rich hatchback, not a Type R.

The Civic ST w/CVT has 162 lb.ft. torque. The 177lb.ft. version applies only to the 6MT version. (I drive a 6MT version, and it's way more fun than with the CVT)
