Resident truck expert and Director of Vehicle Testing Dan Edmunds just got back from driving the new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. In this video, he shows what it's like to drive and tow with gas- and diesel-powered variants. We also get a look at a comprehensive camera system along with a functional look at the interior and bed.
With extremely capable engines and transmissions, smart technology and a functional bed, the Silverado 2500 makes a great first impression. Yes, the interior may not be as nice to look at as some of the competitors, but we think the Silverado HD will put up a strong fight when we compare it to its key rivals.
A glance at the Silverado's specs makes Chevy's claimed tow rating seem like some kind of trick. After all, Chevrolet's 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel may have been revised to the point where its 445 horsepower outmatches Ram's top-dog diesel, but its 910 lb-ft of torque falls short of the Ram's nice, round number. So what gives?
The answer may lie in the transmission. Chevrolet pairs its Duramax diesel with a 10-speed automatic, while the Ram soldiers on with a six-speed. The extra gears reduce the gear splits dramatically, and that alone could make up the difference. Whether that's really the case, the extra cogs will certainly be a boon in the form of better drivability and improved fuel economy whether you're towing or not.
Not into the whole diesel thing? The HD's new non-turbocharged 6.6-liter gasoline V8 now makes a healthy 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, and it can tow as much as 17,400 pounds. Those three figures represent 11%, 21% and 18% improvements over last year, respectively. What hasn't changed is the transmission. The gasoline V8 is still paired with a six-speed automatic.
Whether towing is your prime directive, the Silverado HD's lengthened wheelbase will pay dividends each and every day. The most popular combination, especially for the 2500HD version, is the crew cab with the standard bed. This combination has had its wheelbase stretched by 5.2 inches, which results in two major improvements.
Rear legroom in the Chevy's crew cab has increased by nearly 3 inches - also bringing the Chevy to within a couple of tenths of the Ford F-250. Look at the front and rear legroom together, however, and the Chevy takes the win. Meanwhile, the Ram crew cab languishes behind because its new 2500 and 3500 trucks didn't get the enlarged crew cab the automaker bestowed on the Ram 1500. Why? Because the Ram HD offers a Mega Cab option, with about the same rear legroom as Chevy's new crew cab, plus reclining rear seats and behind-the-seat storage.

I think that there is a host of chevy haters here. For one if you want something that is pretty buy a car. If want a truck that squats in the ass end don't buy a chevy. If you want a truck that does the job, here ya go. If you buy an HD, you most likely tow something. I think GM thought hard to give a towing driver something that has features for that. I have a 2018 2500HD and plan on upgrading due to the new one having the features it has.

Forget the gas version!, they dropped 4.10 gear option which has been around since the beginning of time. 2019 and earlier versions offered 4.10 rear gear ratios. Here is the difference in performance in max trailer weights for 2019 and older crew cab short bed models with 4.10 was 14200#, and 3.73 were 9700#. It would have been ok if they changed the transmission ratios but they didnt on the gas version! From 14200# to 9700# is a huge difference, saying you make up for it by increasing the engine torque wont make up for it on the hills. You need the extra gear ratio on the hills because the RPMs will drop too much when it shifts. Also the 3.73 will put more stress on the clutches that engage when the transmission shifts. I love my 2012 2500HD with gas, but the gears on the hills are barely acceptable and I cant afford to make them worse. Time to go to Ford that offers 4.30 gear ratios!

The 2020 Silverado is hands down the best vehicle I’ve seen in my life. It has a lot of storage and the front display and the numerous camera views in the truck. But one thing that I’m sure hasn’t clicked in GM’s head is the hood size. I don’t understand how they keep making it really large. What sense does that make? Shorten the hood!

Gotta love the comments from those who've never owned a big truck and sit in their moms basement submitting baseless claims. I've owned 5 Silverados from 1500 to hd3500, from gas to Duramax and never had one back for recall or other mechanical repairs. Actually use for pulling living quarter horse trailers, 5th wheel campers, gravel and building materials. We all like different vehicles...leave it at that.

what are the true pros/cons of the IFS torsion vs coil springs?
@MW-jj1rn
@MW-jj1rn 5 жыл бұрын
I had a Tundra with Coil + short torsion bars and have a 2500HD. You recall the fire road with washboard? These are caused by vehicle traffic or a bad grader running too fast. Anyway, the difference is how this road vibration resonates back to the driver and vehicle. Under normal driving conditions, or towing the truck will drive like a car and or a truck and float around or beat the @#$% out of the driver. The coil is general softer - Torsion is stiffer normally. Hope this helps.

Edmund’s hates GM, yet they find no fault with this. GM on the other hand is by far the best automotive engineering firm, their problem is cost cutting on interior materials . They just cannot help it, it’s like telling a dog not to eat red meat on its plate. They cut every single time, no matter how hard they try.
