We review the new 2020 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss to discuss how trucks dominate sales in the US. In this video, we cover the updated engineering and things to watch out for. As usual, we discuss the good and the bad. With other products like the Toyota Tundra, Ford F150, and RAM 1500 there are some hard choices to make when it comes to trucks these days.

Hey guys so i had my head in my ass. There is a 4 cylinder 2.7t, a 6 cylinder 4.3, the 5.3 v8 in this truck, a 6.2 v8 and a 3.0 diesel. Funny enough i got it right for our first take and we both thought there was no way a 2.7 was a 4 cylinder. Sorry guys

@@daviddaigle7463 Agreed it just makes them look a bit posh when they worry about seat comfort and the speaker fidelity in a pickup. I looked for things like what will take the abuse of me getting in and out of 10,000 times, but I will have to hedge my bets on the DFM causing issues or not. Admittedly I did not take the advice to shop around, I dislike Ford in general, no thanks Nissan and Toyota, and Ram too floaty soft, hard on gas and no real innovation except a big touchscreen.

My hemi of 110k miles has been fine with it reliability wise, you just need to stay on top of your oil changes. Issues arise with these systems because so many people trust the 15k miles per oil change on the oil bottle rather than following the 6k on their maintenance manual, then blame the manufacturers. People confuse "bulletproof" and "maintenance proof" all the time and end up murdering their engines via neglect. You can clearly tell when its in 4 cylinder though which is annoying, even though you get used to it. But according to just about everyone who drove these new DFM ones, you can't feel the deactivation at all since its dynamic with your foot and this is the first review ive heard say its clunky, and that includes other reviewers who also bash on cylinder deactivation.

Nice review. Glad your holding GM's feet to the fire with the cylinder management debackle. Might also be worth mentioning that when Toyota had an issue with frames rusting out on their medium and large trucks, they gave every truck one free frame replacement, even if it wasn't the original owner. GM's track record of support isn't as good as their competition. For something that costs practically $60,000 to drive it of the lot, this is unacceptable.

@@stevee8318 Most Toyotas after 06 are solid, VAG, Post Chrysler Merger Mercs and Hondas after 06 are solid if you watch the rear quarter panels and give them a wash every now and then in winter. Heavy duty Ford and Ram trucks of the last decade are surprisingly stout as far as the frames go. The bodies are a different story but nowhere near as bad as GM in terms of weather resistance. Mazdas are still garbage despite their promises to fix their rust issues. Kia isn't much better.
@Trussme96
@Trussme96 4 жыл бұрын
@@slowgoat6089 Washing isn't the issue. The metals and "paint" they use will fall apart if you look that them wrong. My 06 Civic is a shitbox with 260,000 kms on it. I only wash it maybe 4 times a year and the undercarriage is still clean with minor surface rust after maybe 2 rust proofing jobs. I've seen customers come in with the same GM cars every year for the last 5 years and the frames still manage to end up with a new hole or chunk gone out of them somehow. Once the rust starts on a GM product, there's almost no way to stop it.

Love your videos and your humor. Bought a 2020 Silverado last week and this video made me feel a little bad at first. But hey. I get it. I do feel like there is a disconnect between the reviewers and the buyers on these 2020 GM trucks. Every review beats it’s exterior styling and on the interior. But in the real world GM sold more Silverados & Sierras in Q1 than Ford F150s and blew Ram away. I’ll admit there are things on the Ford and Ram that are nicer on the inside but Chevy does have some innovative storage compartments and things the other don’t have. I got the 2.7T since I use the truck more as a dad sedan. I’m actually getting 21 and better at the pump. That’s with a crew size 4x4 on 20s. I’m really impressed with it. My 2020 LT Chevrolet has things my brothers 2018 Lariat F-150 doesn’t have. Edit: I’m no Chevy fanboy, this is my first Chevrolet truck. I’ve owned several f-150s and 1 Ram before.

When I was shopping for a truck, I test drove all of them for the exact reason you guys pointed out. $50k is a LOT of money for a truck. We settled on an Ecoboost F150 because good luck finding a 6.2L Silverado. Also the Chevy interior sucks. I didn’t like the shifter in the RAM, the Tundra had terrible MPG, Nissan has weird options with the Pro-4x, and I can’t stress how much the Silverado really sucks compared to the competition. Ford even offers a selectable locker in 2WD if you want! And you can get it in 4x4 (with low range!) without the FX-4 package.

My youtube name aside, I've had the 2013 version of the Silverado with absolutely no issues what so ever. There is a vocal minority on gm forums that cry about burning oil. However, the majority of people don't have this problem. Think about it, if it was as wide spread as most people thought. There would be a class action lawsuit appearing, and it's been how many years? A decade and a half? I'm not saying people didn't have issues, but these are the same people who don't change their oil on time more than likely. Then they are surprised when something bad happens. I actually choose the 2019 Custom (The cloth seats, which is better than leather by the way, are very supportive) this time because I like the front end more, and then I added stuff onto it. I didn't use half the stuff in my old LT. I love the styling. I think the mob of the internet is making people not use their brains again. "Oh.. 5 people here on this forum or twitter don't like it.. I want to be included in this group.. Hey guys, I don't like it either hurr hurr hurr! Please be my friend!" Also, having tested the newer rams.. Yeah, the ride might be a smidgen better, but then I thought.. I want my electronics to work in 5 years. FCA can't hire a good electrical engineer to save their lives. Having owned several FCA products over the years, it comes down to bad ground contacts and improper wire gauges. They can build a good engine, sure, but wiring a power window? Forget about it. Tested a 2019 Ford, interior quality was the same. I just have questions about the longevity of turbos. Even with their cooling systems attached to it. To be honest, I was dead even with both the Ford and Chevy. I just like the styling of the Chevy better. The Ford is pretty much a box with lights. It's like it was designed by U-Haul. I just don't see how anybody would choose a RAM product at all. Their overall reliability is sub-par when you compare them to Ford and Chevy. I know reviewers love to gush over the interiors of these things, though. Then they go "Why wouldn't you buy this?!" Well, because I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with failing electrical components. If anybody should be getting an extended warranty, it's FCA owners. I did like the video, though. Good job, guys! :)

these guys are certainly the best reviewers I have seen. I was so glad to get rid of my Canyon because the seats were so bad. Too bad in a truck that costs so much more they couldn't fix that. Felt like my head was resting on a rock to the point where I had to use foam and a towel and safety pins to fashion myself a pad to go over the head rest so that I didn't get severe neck pain after 5 minutes in the seat.

GM bean counters still insist on wax dipping the frames as the only corrosion protection. You can scrape it off to bare metal with your fingernail, and on a hot day you can wipe it right off with a towel. Toyota learned their lesson on that years ago, and they actually replaced frames at no cost under a special extended warranty program. Would GM ever do that?

Great review guys! You confirmed a lot of the knocks against this new 2019 generation. I have a 2016 Z71 and I love it, and I was sad to see the 2019 models and how they ruined the interiors. Absolutely terrible interior design and fit & finish! I don't mind the exterior on certain models such as the Trail Boss, i think it looks pretty good. However, you are totally right, compared to the other 2 American competitors, they have fallen behind! I'm glad I don't need a new truck any time soon. I'll wait for the next gen Silverado since I've always loved Silverados. I'm just very disappointed with how far back they've gone in this generation. Maybe GM will listen to us and fix all this crap in the next gen Silverado in another 4-6 years.

@@andybub45 Good luck off roading? Baha1000 stock class winner when the Raptor could never compete. In fact the 1st Gen Raptor NEVER finished in the stock class. You people harping about lockers forget that TC can do at the very least 80% of what MOST buyers will use these trucks for. Been through cross axle undulations with full articulation on the truck with literally no need for a locker. Maybe you should learn how to drive your truck instead of having to rely on a locker. There's a point at which a locker is needed, most driving situations do not require it.
@papa_pt
@papa_pt 4 жыл бұрын
@@d1sturb3d119 ^^^this is what digging a hole looks like. There are COUNTLESS situations off-roading where a mechanical lsd comes into play...it has to do with getting traction in loose driving surfaces and not flexing/articulation
@d1sturb3d119
@d1sturb3d119 4 жыл бұрын
@@papa_pt An LSD and locker are two different things though. If you're running a torsen you may as well have an open diff. Clutch type LSD's are great but not for off road use. A locker would be useful in a lot of situations. Suffice to say most situations folks get into do not require a locker. I've been on quite a few trails with my GX fully loaded and even then I never used a locker. Flexing and articulation is what causes low traction situations to develop. The goal is to keep all 4 wheels on the ground as much as possible ensuring optimum traction. That is 4x4 101. The more flex and articulation you have the higher the chance of getting to the limits of that articulation which is exactly why I said it. Even with fully unloaded suspension with the tire now failing to make contact with the surface, TC can improve the situation in most of the time. Learning to drive the right line is a much more important skill. Even in those situations if you have a hard time, ride the brake and get the vehicle to crawl through it. Lockers are helpful but a better driver is much more useful. There used to be a time when 4 wheeling only meant relying on 4wd with no lockers at all. We still got around irrespective. Hell we used to wheel with pizza cutters and open diff's for god sakes. You folks buying a stock truck aren't taking these things to the hardest trails out there which is why TC would be more than enough for most consumers. With today's traction control unless you are pushing the limits of the vehicle a locker is crutch for shit drivers. Seen plenty of trucks with lockers struggle purely because the driver thought he had a silver bullet and picked a shit line.

For accessing mines I rent these trucks (4x4 crew cab, chevy/gmc, ram and ford) for about a week 6 times a year for the last 6 years, so not quite 40 of them over the last 6 years. I've had equally good/bad experiences with all of them. The biggest indicator of reliability is the trim level, the lower the trim level the more reliable - like if it's got a sunroof it's about 50/50 that that works. If it's a full ton it's maybe half as reliable as the 1/2 ton. If reliability is key go cheap, get the cheapest one that meets your needs, the more you pay the less you get. The comments about the interior don't register with me, all of these trucks function practically identical inside.

So why are you taking some guy with a sad life's word over the reviewer?

@Sideways G comparing a trans thats not a cvt to a cvt especially one in a nissan is not a compliment.

Sideways G what I meant was, when I drove a 2017 Nissan Altima, and saw how this truck accelerated and shifted, I couldn’t help but think about the Nissan, throws the revs all the way up and it basically sounds like the “shifting” is choking it. The way the Silverado holds its revs and quickly throws them down like 2,000 rpms and brings them back up again, is very similar to how Nissan does it with their CVT’s.

Most people that buy these trucks or any vehicle will never open the hood. Hell, they won't even replenish the wiper fluid -- it will happen at the stealership.

I really appreciate your review. The lease is ending on my 2017 F-150 and I am not brand loyal. Even though mine is a base XL, the front seats are incredibly comfortable, even after a 14 hour drive. 2.7 Ecoboost is more than adequate power for towing a 5000 lb boat. I was planning to look at the Silverado, but I am convinced there is no reason to do so.
