A quick video from last week as @neil.agate and I met up after not having seen each other in a while. We first met up north with two New Defenders, and later on a few meet ups with my Discovery 4.
A cold camp in the Highland region between west and east gave us a real challenge with the temperature. But a positive look on it makes these camps my favourite places to sleep.
Also talking about Niels story with his Defender, and some thoughts on the new Defender.

Great to watch this and get Neil's first hand experience of how it actually performs. My D3 is complicated enough for me and I dont have to worry about ever having to afford a new defender. However, even though they are complicated as time goes by they too will become old and I wonder if there will be a following willing to take them on and keep them going for another 40 years? Only time will tell I suppose. 👍

I’m looking forward to see if they will get down to the D3/D4 range and still be usable in another 10-20 years. If so it would be a great platform for a new build! As for now, way out of range!😂

You need to get the new Ineos Grenadier. It’s absolutely incredible off and on road - much heavier duty, and much easier to adapt and mod for your purpose. And no computers draining the battery when you open the doors anymore! Sadly the new defender just can’t do nearly the same severe off road trails a classic defender or new grenadier can do! I’ve tried. the entire lower body panels is clad with plastic so the minute you slide off of a little rock ledge and hit that bumper you destroy the oil coolers, and all the other plastic parts. The grenadier is all metal - as it should be.

Seems like the battery issue could be a software/firmware fix from Land Rover, where you can put the vehicle in "camp mode" or something similar that would keep those systems from initiating every time the door is opened.
@kasperhoglund

Yeah we talked about it. Should be a really easy fix to just turn off the “pre start up” thing that activates everything if a door is opened 👍

@@kasperhoglund It should be, but have you heard anyone overcoming this issue? Andrew St Pierre White talks about a very similar case, where a Defender was stuck in the Australian Outback with no power, no matter what the owner tried to do, cables, battery pack, you name it. A mecanic with a laptop had to fly in and reset the protection systems. As a potential buyer of this car this problem worries me. Cheers man! Great work with the videos as always!

Great video & nice Defender. With the battery issues, I had the same problem with my 2016 Subaru outback. I was on a 12 day overland trip in Scotland and had the tailgate open for almost 2 days in one location and when I tried to start it the battery was flat. I hadn’t noticed the dashboard had kept a message on saying my tailgate was open so I’m assuming it was that, which caused the flat battery. Now I have to put in carabiner in the tailgate lock so the car thinks it’s closed. Like you say it’s a modern car problem.

Amazing video as usual! I don't care what people say negatively about the new Defender, it is a gorgeous and capable vehicle and I'm happy that Neil loves his! The LR3 was once considered not to be a Land Rover because how different it looked compared to the Disco 2. I love my LR3 and couldn't be happier with it. You are one of the reasons I bought an LR3, was looking at both LR3 and LR4, but ended up with an LR3 for it's simpler system.

Owner of a New Defender 110 since 2021 here, Looking for a car to travel with my family of four, that is comfortable right at the start without having to upgrade lots of different things. The capacity of the car offroad is impressive. The first real test was during 1 month on the Icelandic Highlands. After the trip I was sure that I made the right choice for my family's specific need of an overlander. Traveling trough Europe and later on more have the same complain of the batterie. It wasn't that much of an issue because I usually won't stay at the same place for more than 2 days. During the day I leave the doors slightly open to prevent starting the car but still, I fully agree that it is a buzz killer. Which are for you the best solution for this batterie issue without of course an LR update? Keep up your good work Kasper. 😀✌

Great filming and story telling. Good to discuss such hot topic in a quiet and objective way. For the ND: I disagree, because I love the design and the look. All i ever saw of this car so far is on the highway in high speed. Buyers are mainly such as Porsche Cayenne drivers and not been offroaders before. It will stay a golf players car. But there will be a few like Neil that really use it as a overland car. But overlanding is not offroading and therefore the ND is not in heritage of the Defender.

The new defender may look like it’s more of a flash 4x4, but I had the opportunity to drive one off road with Land Rover experience in the UK and it is indeed very much the real deal. The thing is a beast off road. And I would challenge any doubters to take one on a test drive off road. Unfortunately for me it is currently outside my budget to buy
@kasperhoglund
@kasperhoglund 7 ай бұрын
Same belief I’m left with after the 8000km I did with it when new. It’s just way to expensive for what I do, but so was the discovery before they got older and more affordable as well. Only test left is how they hold up over time!

The comment about pretenders is in my opinion to harsh and offending. It was Land Rovers marketing to tell it can do everything better than the old one. It is better onroad, more comfortable and easier to drive. But there are the downtrades which people are struggling. For good reason. It has enough potential as overlander but not as expeditionvehicle or offroader. I like the look a lot. Let’s say it would have coil springs, a real frame under bodying a solid axle in the rear. Or even without the solid rear axle it would have been a good compromise. I am sure it would have gotten more positive reactions from the very beginning.

Plenty of ways to solve it. Could have a solar hood charger. Could have a split charge setup. Or LR should just put in a softwear update with a “camp mode” to prevent it from starting up all systems each time you close and open something 🤝

Oh I actually just did the same as Neil, and kept doors semi closed or open if I planned on going in and out a lot. Could have a cut off for the battery, but then you’d need to reset the calendar each time. So is software update with a “camp mode” would be the best for the new defender 🤝

For me personally, the reason I don't feel the new defender is a "real" defender, is for the exact reasons you were saying, it is overly complicated, the purpose of a defender is, 1: to go anywhere and 2: fix anywhere with a screwdriver and an adjustable. Don't get me wrong, the defender is a lovely car, but could you fix an issue on the side of the road easily?👍

The new Defender is not a proper Defender. It is however a proper Discovery, and that is not a bad thing, as I've found the Discovery range to be seriously underestimated. And the latest Discovery to be somewhat lacking. If they can fix the battery draining issue, it would be perfect (not for my wallet though...)
