In this video, Jenny reviews the latest Ford Focus Wagon in the ST-Line trim. The 2020 Ford Focus is not totally new, but it is impressive. On the US market, Ford seems to be axing almost anything that is not a sports car, a UTE or some kind of an SUV, but Europe is still holding on to ‘regular’ cars. And us, well we’re somewhere in between.
Now, Ford says they’re dropping a bunch of cars in the US but we will still be getting a few of them here in Australia.
The engine in this Ford Focus is a 1.5 EcoBoost petrol with cylinder deactivation which gives 134 kW and 240 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic as standard.
The sportier version of the Focus is known as the ST. And while this one looks the part, it doesn't bite as hard.
We call it a Wagon. You might know it as a Ford Focus Estate. But either way, it is bigger than the Hatch variant.

Great review, but at 5:48 "No rear vents". All focus since the original do have rear heating/cooling vents, they are under the front seats!

Du u like extra lemon way to risky if your using your own money here in Aus fiat chrysler sales are so low that rumour has it they be pulling out of Australia. Too many owners burnt by the dog and lemon brand play safe buy a rav 4 or forester. Fiat chrysler is on tops scotty and John C dog and lemon list

Those are the 18in rims not the standard 17s. The 18s are part of a style package which includes the LED headlights over standard halogens.

always been a hb or wagon guy. this new focus wagon looks pretty sharp. wagons do sell well in the us. look at the subaru outback. they sell boatloads of them

I was about to comment how we’re missing out on this wagon but The cost cutting of NO bottle holders or A/C vents in the back is not for small families. It’s for single or couples

Find out if it has under the seat vents for heating/cooling rear passengers. Yes, the lack of cup holders in the rear seat is a drag, but the nets behind the seats will accommodate bottles that can be closed with a lid. I wouldn't let these two negatives change your mind about buying the car-it's still the best-in-class compact hatchback or wagon

Ford is making a big mistake pulling cars out of the lineup here in the US...its still a significant chunk of the market that they've given up on despite the shift in demand. An unfortunate and shortsighted move imo :/

Ford can't compete with Toyota and Honda for the sedan market. They were losing money on those factories. The Fusion peak sales was 2014 with over 306K units sold, and last year just a hair over 166K units sold. Focus sales were never that great, they stopped production in 2019 with only 12,480 units sold, previous years sales 114K. Compared to Toyota Camry and Corolla, 337K Camry sold and 304K Corolla. 267K Accords and 325K Civics sold. Tough market to compete in these days.

@@acdii This is actually FALSE. Ford CAN compete and were doing just fine. They don't have to be sales leaders in compact cars just to offer them for sale. Just look at the sales data from the last few years. Ford was selling an excellent number of Focus and even the Fusion sales were strong. The sales took a nose-dive when Ford announced it was not bringing the next generation of the Focus to the U.S. and cancelling all sedans. Remember, sales of the Focus were strong IN SPITE of the known defective automatic transmission. Had these buyers wisely chose the manual transmission, they would have had a completely different experience and would have realized how great the Focus was and is. The new generation Focus has fixed the automatic transmission issue by getting rid of the Powershift dual clutch and replacing it with an 8-speed torque converter. All Ford needs to do is introduce the Focus in the U.S. as a Hatchback only, and get rid of the sedan body style. It functions much better and looks MUCH better as a hatchback. Better than all the other hatchbacks in its class. And offer it with 6-speed manual as standard and 8-speed automatic as optional.

I feel exactly the same way as you. They can still be competitive in the compact and midsize car segment of the market with updated products that appeal to a wide variety of customers. For example, by offering the Focus hatchback and wagon body styles, Active body styling, and offering both 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic transmission options. If all of the their customers tell them it's a shortsighted move and a mistake, they will realize there is still a market for their hatchbacks in North America.

I wish Ford would see logic and reason and bring the ST wagon to Canada, I mean it's a sporty car like the Mustang so we should be able to get it. I drive a Fiesta ST now and there is no way I'd "upgrade" to a Ford SUV. Why would I give up a small, peppy, agile, fuel efficient car to drive a bigger, blobby, lardy SUV that gets 20-50% worse fuel economy? My commute isn't going to get any shorter just because I drive a less efficient vehicle.

About the only station wagon style vehicle in the US is the Subaru Outback. Haven't seen a Ford in this configuration in 20 years. Ford has completely abandoned sedans (other than the Mustang coupe).

Ford can still win by bringing a fuel-efficient hatchback car with a manual transmission as standard and an improved automatic transmission as optional that gets rid of the faulty Powershift automatic of the previous generation. If they offered a wagon, just make it the Active body style so that it looks Subaru-like. Somehow, Americans love Subaru wagons but not other companies' wagons.

Great review, and presenter is both good looking and quite knowledgeable. That said, my comments are focused (no pun intended) on the engine/transmission: is the 1.5 EcoBoost a 3 or 4 cylinder engine and is automatic the only transmission offered? Other comment: I like to think that I am reasonably adept at detecting and understanding most accents, however this presenter (maybe many Australians?) has a tendency to "drop off" as she comes to the end of a sentence. The voice volume goes lower as she nears the end of a sentence making the last 1 or 2 words (nearly) inaudible.

Incredibly, Yes, the automatic is the only option in Australia. In Europe, it is available with an excellent 6-speed manual as standard. So sad. Also, the engine is a 3-cylinder EcoBoost with dual injection to mitigate carbon buildup on intake valves, and yes, has cylinder deactivation technology: Runs on 2 cylinders to save fuel when 3 are not needed. Plus, it sounds awesome when accelerating: like a mini V6! It's a great engine for the Focus!

She mentioned the handling a little, but I agree. The Focus is always noted as the best driver's car in its class. It really is the best of all compact hatchbacks, and I suppose Wagons as well. But I like how the hatchback looks over the wagon- the wagon looks too bulky.

@@williamdeasy7507 In America, it has a bad reputation because of the Powershift automatic fiasco. But the manual transmission Focus has always been excellent and is the one I'd choose. I hope Ford comes to its senses and brings the Focus back with the manual transmission as standard and the new 8-speed automatic as optional. It drives better and looks better than the competition in its class!

Even in Europe there are rumors then and when, that Ford could drop the wagons and normal cars as well in favor of SUVs. Renault is canceling its once popular and famous vans, although they have recently designed them crossover-like. I can understand the trend, but it makes the roads very boring, when every car looks like an SUV and all SUV look the same.

When was the last time anyone saw a new focus on the road? People are not buying these cars from ford due to the whole transmission issue from the last model.

The new Focus fixes the flawed transmission from the previous generation - the 8-speed automatic is a torque converter, not a dual-clutch. No reason not to buy it, except that it is still an automatic. I would personally only ever buy a manual transmission for driver engagement and the pleasure of shifting a Ford manual gearbox, the best in the business!

Besides not offering a manual transmission, the biggest mistake Ford made is not bringing the all-new Ford Focus to the US/North American market, in hatchback body style. This is MILES above the other vehicles in its class, namely the Civic, Corolla, and Mazda3, in terms of driving dynamics, looks, performance, and interior space/design and cargo capacity. Even the infotainment screen is better in the Ford. And it is much nicer overall than the outdated VW Golf. The Focus routinely scores BEST IN CLASS for fun-to-drive factor when comparing cars in its class in Europe. C'mon, Ford, WAKE UP and CHANGE COURSE, you're sailing into the abyss!! Bring it to the U.S. ASAP

Actually, the Ford Escape/Kuga has always been based on the Focus. Ford is making the mistake of not selling the all-new Focus in North America, and I agree, Americans aren't falling for the 'trick' since it is a more expensive, bigger CUV than the Focus hatchback. Why Ford, why have you let us down by not bringing the new Focus hatchback to America?

@ 4:38, how can manufacturers be allowed to pass speedometers with increments not to scale. Look at the equidistant markings either side of 60 km/h. One is an 55 and the other is 70. SO WRONG! European sourced vehicles seem to be the main culprits, but not exclusively. If it's that difficult, then just install a digital speedometer instead. (Rant over)

Did you buy one with the defective Powershift automatic transmission? If so, this all-new generation has an 8-speed automatic that gets rid of the faulty dual-clutch that caused the issues. It is a completely different transmission.

@@danielleroux6490 it is still 'mediocre' For cruising it's all right, but the fact that it gets stuck when changing from Reverse to Drive, it annoys me By stuck I mean, once I put D, it takes a while till the torque comes in

Ford is lying. Americans love sedans, but Ford makes garbage sedans. The only good Sedans they made were Fusion and Taurus but because of a Class Action Lawsuit Regarding the Focus and Fiesta with their flawed transmission and unethical choices they're pulling out.

They don't make garbage sedans. The only issue was the defective Powershift Dual-Clutch automatic. If buyers had chosen the Manual Transmission, they would have been rewarded with one of the best manual gearboxes in the business to go along with the excellent handling, comfortable ride of the durable Focus and Fiesta. Here's the solution: Get rid of the sedan body shape and only sell the Focus / Fusion in hatchback form. That way they still satisfy this "We're getting rid of sedans" mentality. And make sure to include a manual transmission option even though the 8-speed automatic gets rid of the faulty automatic in the previous generation Focus.
