Welcome to my review of the Ford Focus Estate.
For 20 years the Ford Focus has been the benchmark of what a great family hatchback should be. Spacious, well equipped and most importantly, greta to drive.
With this 4th generation it's great to see that Ford has not lost this ethos. Even in Estate form, the focus could be classed as a near perfect all-rounder.
See what I think of this latest ST Line trim.

Your absolutely right about the engine options and thank you for your review on this car because after watching your video I’ve been twice for test drives and yesterday I’ve placed the order on the st line vignale trim in desert island blue. I was absolutely speechless when I took it out for the test drive, it just took off and I was actually thinking that they had given me the wrong car! Yes I did think about going for the 1.5 diesel but after taking the 1.0 eco boost out I decided it was all I needed as there is just me and the two dogs. This car gave me that tingling feeling and I had this massive grin on my face because I was in the mind that a 1.0 would be naff and underpowered and I mentioned this to the salesman and when I came back from the test drive he said “I told you, didn’t I” and boy was he right. The only thing now is the wait as it’s going to be July before the pick up date, but I’m sure it’s worth waiting for.

I'm currently borrowing a 1.5L manual D and it's banging. There's nothing spectacular at all, but that's exactly what you expect. It has great steering, excellent visibility and is just fun to drive. The only grumble I have is the squared edge of the centre console which kinda knocks against your knee when turning. Overall it's 3/5, but within it's own context perhaps 5/5? Great stuff. .

The button on the turn signal lever you can see throughout the video toggles the lane assist on and off. In the most vigorous setting it will actually steer you back into lane if you start veering off. Very nice in-depth review by the way!

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the manual gearbox. Even here in the US, there are plenty of folks like me that we ONLY ever buy a new car if it has a manual transmission. I'll never buy an automatic. So, if Ford wants our business here, they need to offer a practical hatchback available with a manual transmission. They had it in the past with the Fiesta and the Focus, I just hope they bring them back in a few years time. Thanks for your excellent review!

Thank you for the comments Dan. Glad you liked the review. Something Ford do well is a manual gearbox and it does surprise me when they don't give customers the opportunity to pick. Fingers crossed that the new Focus (and ST) will come to the US with that option.

Great review mate. I’m a Motability customer, and a big fan of diesel as I’ve driven for a living most of my life. Consequently my weapon of choice will be a 1.5 diesel auto estate in some iteration to prepare me for instant grandfatherhood! The boot in the hatchback is quite small! Have you tried an auto Ford Focus yet, most testers reckon they’re pretty good

I haven't reset the tach since i got it 2 years ago and is showing 39mpg and it is the 1ltr 140hp version. On many a b and c road I've had the back end dancing. Just watched your video on the latest focus and you weren't too critical of it. One thing i noticed is it was an auto version and I've never driven an automatic car in my life (58) so can't say how that affects the driving experience of what is essentialy a driver's car. I'm hoping to get the 1.5ltr 180hp in the next couple of months. Thanks Alastair from Alistair.

@danielleroux6490
@danielleroux6490 3 жыл бұрын
@@zexxonije I take it you don't live in the US. I see Focuses everyday on my commute - they are very popular. Go back and check the U.S. sales figures for the years that the Focus was a relatively new model in the previous generation: it sold quite well in spite of the automatic transmission issues. Ford shot themselves in the foot with the DCT Powersh%$t transmission fiasco and cut their losses IMO by dumping the the small car lineup rather than bring the new generation cars. Why they didn't ditch the Dry Clutch that was the issue when it became apparent is ridiculous. They lost a lot of good loyal Ford customers who lost faith in the company when they did them wrong with that transmission. Now, had they been wise and bought the excellent Manual Transmission options for the Focus and Fiesta, this would not have been as big of an issue. But seeing as how lazy most of my fellow Americans are, they can't be bothered to either learn or drive a manual and shift for themselves. Like so many other facets of American life, it is duller then dish soap how Americans choose Automatics for their cars. It is pathetic. Now if you're referring to the Estate (Wagon) body style, then yes, it is surprisingly unpopular here in America. I see a few Mk1 Focus Wagons still on the road, but they obviously sold many more hatchbacks and sedans, so they didn't sell the wagon in the subsequent generations. So, in summary, people definitely WERE buying them before Ford decided in their "wisdom" to cancel the Focus and not release the all-new generation in 2018. Honestly, this was a HUGE mistake, since the new Focus has corrected any issues it had - 8 spd auto replaces the dual-clutch auto, more rear seat leg room and improved, more spacious and logical interior design. Plus, the new Focus ST would be hugely popular here as there aren't many good choices for Hot hatches in North America. Ford would have a winner with the new Focus in the U.S.
@danielleroux6490
@danielleroux6490 3 жыл бұрын
@@zexxonije Also, the Focus was never imported, it was union-assembled in Michigan. But if Ford wanted to save some cash, they could have the new Focus made in Mexico. Obviously only the Focus ST could be imported from Germany and still make a profit. And man it would sell like hot cakes - blows any other hot hatch out of the water in terms of the total package: fun to drive, looks great, practical 5 door and 5 passenger, reasonably fuel efficient. Oh, and an excellent 6 speed manual as well, not to mention the availability of an automatic to appease the simpleton Americans! hehe

Will I notice much difference in performance given size of car? Thank you for your comment Richard. You will notice a difference in performance. The petrol is very reactive under acceleration and the engine suits the car well. The diesel has a bit more mid-range poke for when on the motorway. I do recommend a test drive in the 1.0L.

Thanks for the comment. As you’re looking at both a petrol and diesel I would ask what mileage do you expect to achieve annually? If it’s 10,000 miles or less I’d recommend the petrol and anything over 12,000 miles a year, the diesel should suffice.

There will be no RS, booo :) Focus is great. Coming from VW group, the minuses were: the shifting was better on VW Golf VII, also the board computer UI was better there. Though ride quality is excellent. I could turn off/on lane departure system with no issue.
@danielleroux6490

@Lanoumik
@Lanoumik 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielleroux6490 Sure. Somehow in the Golf the shifting felt more precise . The gears somehow "clicked" better (not in the sound sense :) ) . If I did not drive the Golf before Focus , I don't think I would notice anything unusual though . It's not a dealbreaker.

@@Lanoumik Thanks so much for your insight! I have not driven a modern VW (1990s!), but will be looking at the mk8 Golf GTI when it becomes available in the states. I think the 90s VW shifts felt very mechanical and 'old school' if that makes sense. If the Focus ST was sold here in the the U.S., I think it would steal the thunder from the new GTI - to me it looks way cooler and all the reviews say it is more fun to drive. Plus I like the Focus interior better than the mk8 GTI - it has REAL buttons and knobs, not just a touch screen. it just seems more logical and user-friendly rather than having tech for just tech's sake.

@@danielleroux6490 oh btw, I was taklking about the 1.5 litre 110kW version of Focus. And my Golf was 1.2 Tsi 77kW. When my car went for a service (lady bumped my rear bumper) they gave me their 1.0 litre 92kW Focus and the shifting was completely different. Probably because the engine is so light, shifting felt like playing with a toy :) As for Mk8 Golf, I was buying the car 6 months before the Mk8 was introduced, so I didnt buy the mk7 facelift to just drool over Mk8 later :) It was a mistake. I love the Mk7 ergonomy much more than the Mk8. Too bad :) . Btw was buying the car because our mk7(2013) was a hatch and we needed an estate. Ergonomy of mk7 compared to focus is better, especially the middle panel facing the drive and the dashboard menus were more ergonomic. Have to click more to get to some stuff in Focus than in golf.

@@ronaldsmith4365 Exactly. I hope Ford changes their decision soon, because the new Focus and Fiesta hatchback are excellent cars that look and drive better than the best sellers here in the States. I realize the sub-compact market is shrinking and the Fiesta would never sell in big numbers like it does in Europe and the UK. But the compact class is still here, with the Civic and Corolla selling reasonably well. The Focus hatch would definitely be competitive in our market, especially with the options of a 6-speed manual and all-new 8-speed automatic transmission.
