2020 magpie summary part 2, the end of March until the beginning of June.
The magpies are very skilled builders, using a wide variety of materials.
Twigs in different thicknesses and forms on the outer shell.
Grass reinforced soil to mold the solid center pit.
Tiny twigs, straws, root threads and moss inside the pit.
They use both force and vibration, both the beak and their feet to form the materials and to make them stick.
The first couple of years, we did not understand why they did not re-use the nest again the next year, the construction being so nice and solid.
Seing the growth of mold and all kinds of bad stuff in the pit the next year, it is understandable.
So now we clean out the interior of the nest the moment the magpies leave.
The following year (2021) it seems to work.
The outer shell of the nest is mainly as a protection from crows.
Crows, nice as they are by themselves, are regarded as enemies by both 'our' magpies and seagulls.
When there are crows around, the magpies and seagulls actively cooperate to drive them away.
This year (2020) Shemag laid 7 eggs.
They all hatched nicely.
Both Shemag and Hemag did their formidable and impressive work, Shemag lying on the eggs and chicks, Hemag bringing food to Shemag and later also to the chicks.
It is hard work but they are very dedicated.
Then tragedy struck.
All the chickens were infected by a parasite (Trichomonas gallinae) and died one by one.
The National Veterinary Institute determined the cause.
It was pretty sad to watch.
This is the price to pay to get so 'close' to these birds.
Hopefully the next try goes better.
We will take some actions to reduce the risk for parasites, mainly by removing possible negative hygiene factors in the warm parts of the season.
This area is regarded as a good and attractive territory by magpies.
There have been many succesful rearings for many, many years.

I’ve been watching a magpie nest In my garden but all I can see is from the ground looking up so all I see is the parents back and forth hard at work doing their thing I just pray I can get to see a baby at the end. This video put me right up in their tree it was fascinating thank you so much for your time and patience to film this for us to see. R.I.P babies well done mum and dad for trying your best hope you will get to be parents shortly. Thanks again thoroughly enjoyed more please Lynn (UK) 🙏🌟🌈👏🏻

It's very interesting to follow birds and their nests. Maybe especially magpie nests, they have kind of a secret aura, being so closed for the world. The mags are amazing. Their dedication and devotion are incredible. We get so impressed every year. This year the mags decided to build another place. In a couple of months we will see if they succeeded this year or not. Then the chicks will fledge and start to turn up in our garden. At the moment we follow 'our' seagulls. They have three eggs. If everything goes ok, the chicks will hatch about the first week in June. Thank you for watching. More bird videos from this year on: kzfaq.infovideos

Thank you. Yes, it's really fascinating to get some glimpses inside their nests. This year the current couple nested at another spot. We hope they will return to nest close to our cams next time. @@picapicalife I have read the sad part of the story. That's part of life I guess. I hope you will have happy young survivors next season. Young magpies from a gang of six visit here every morning, they are looking for peanuts. I put them in different places on the terrace at night. Sometimes one of them pays a visit during the day, though there is no more food left. It's so nice to share a quick eye contact with a wild bird, who is very capable of hiding from people.

I just discovered and watched this video now. Thank you very much for showing this to us. Magpies, as every others common animals are never filmed by professionnal documentary (they prefer going to Savanna...) despite the so interesting ans exciting aspect of Magpies, very intelligent animals. So thank you so much and it's a pity for the chicks ! Nature can be hard. I hope the next ones will survive. I'm french, sorry for my english.

So nice to hear. Glad you like it. Yes, they are very, very interesting. So nice to follow. The very first nesting in our 'steel tree' was successful, five chicks surviving to fledge. The next two first nestings (with cams inside the nest) went wrong for the mags. That was very sad, but as you say, nature can be harsh. This year the mags nest at another spot, but they still defend the 'steel tree'. Hopefully next year they will return and breed successfully. We see Sweetie (the daughter of the couple on the video you saw) and Guy every day in our garden, talking to them. More bird videos from this year on: kzfaq.infovideos

Its 13th of march 2024, Hunza valley Pakistan.i am early morning with a cup of tea through my vertically longated kitchen window i just watched a magpie getting started with his nest, training to balence the first twing in the middle of two apricot tree branches, all the process from the very beginning making a new couple to start building a nest each twig and a lump of mud to eggs hatching and feeding and further on its as meaningful and as important till the end/start of new life, birds don't have to work like humans they just work regardless of laziness and mood. Nature is amazing and we need to learn from the animal kingdom. Thanks for a nice video! ❤

The reason Mag-Pies hates cats all the year around, herrassing them allways, is to teach the cats to fux off when the little birds now land from their nest up in the tree on to the ground and can not fly well yet, or at all.
@picapicalife
@picapicalife 2 жыл бұрын
No wonder birds hate cats. Estimates tell that about 7 mill birds are killed by cats just in this country alone (Norway). That is many. Cats are very good predators, but most of them do not need to hunt to survive.

@James Furey All those animals are magnificent. And the more we learn about them, the more we get impressed, it never stops. And of course animals should not be blamed for following their instincts. As the main rule. Our dogs have killed rats inside our garden, but have somehow learned that they don't need to hunt birds. They have observed us being friendly to the birds. Guess they have never had the option to see us being friendly to rats (even though we don't hate rats neither).

@@picapicalife My dog chased birds onto the lawn, not really wanting to catch them, haha, just chase them away. Tail up into the air and the delight to chase them away, or scare them off for the fun of it, never into the intention to ever catch one, for the dog was smarter than that. Well fed dogs are not very interersted in bird chicks at all. I suppose they do not taste well.

@@user3141592635 We have two dogs ourselves. When they were younger and more playful, they played with the mags, 'chasing' each other every second time. Pure fun. Very nice to see. Our dogs know we like the birds. Every time the dogs pass the bird food station, they look away from it to show they are not interested.

@@maxfever8068 Thank you. Yes, we find it very interesting so it's not a big job. It's not unusual mags fail in breeding. It's hard to be wild birds in the nature. Many tragic events. It was Shemag's and Hemag's daughter Sweetie and her partner Guy that nested here this time, but it all went badly. It was their first try, so next year (if they decide to nest again in 'our' tree) they will be more experienced. Hopefully they will succeed. Being a magpie is tough. I see how their tail-feathers becomes so worn out every season... They might lack some soft under-pelt from a German Sheperd. I used to comb and brush my dog, to minimize hairs in the house when she was molting, releasing a very very good stash of building material on the lawn. Like 15 liters of expanded wool, Everything dissappeared the next day, or the day after, haha. Perhaps the most intelligent creature in the world, except primates (and humans).
@picapicalife
@picapicalife 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, when they molt, they look like disasters for a while. It looks terrible, but it's as it should be. We have never observed mags using other stuff than root threads and grass in the egg pit (together with mud, moss and tiny twigs in the foundation). They are kind of puritanistic that way. Tits, sparrows and other small birds love leftover fur from dogs. That's perfect for them. Yes, they are regarded as highly intelligent. And they have a lot of personality too.
