I have wanted a Smith and Wesson 686 since a co-worker showed me his over thirty years ago. For what ever reason during that time i was never able to get this "dream gun". I had resigned myself to the fact that of all the guns i have collected over those thirty plus years I just was never going to ever own this gun of my dreams. On Christmas morning the one and only present under my tree with my name was a beautiful 686 from Santa. i cried like a baby. Today I placed my first order for .357 ammo and i am looking forward to shooting it with my son for the first time after my next chemo treatment. Thanks for a great video Hickok45.

Yeah, and like he says, it can be applied to pretty much anything. It’s like when you’re starting out playing guitar and you want that $1000 Fender, but until you learn your way around a guitar then you won’t really know what makes it cost so much compared to a cheap Squire which in a lot of ways is just as good.

Tough decision between the two. I ended up buying both (Wife doesn’t know yet). No regrets. I always look forward to taking them to the range. They are extremely accurate and fun to shoot. They are shooting machines. Python 2020 is 4.25” and 686 Plus is 4”. I hate my Dad died before he had a chance to see and hold them in his hands. He taught me all about revolvers. Update-just got the Colt Python 3 inch. It’s awesome.

I had 3 Pythons that I sold. A 2.5" a 4.25" and a 6" bought new, beautiful looking weapons. The little hand that turns the cylinder failed me when I need it the most. Went and bought a Smith & Wesson 686+ 4" barrel. Then bought a 586 with a 3" barrel from Performance Center. Then found a Smith & Wesson 66F with a 3.5" barrel had to have it. All the Smith & Wesson have performed flawlessly. I do miss my blue 4" Python. I sold it to a friend of mine. He lets me look at it from time to time. Then my wife left me. Now I am happy.

I carried a Blue steel 6” Colt Python in the late 80’s early 90’s. You couldn’t beat the heft of that pistol and the smoothness of the trigger pull. The cylinder release broke while qualifying at a range day. Turned out a 5 cent spring broke which prevented the cylinder from releasing and rotating out for a reload. Glad it happened when it did. Ultimately I retired the Python and went back to my Departmental issued S&W 4” .38 revolver for on-duty carry. I loved carrying that Python though. 😎

I told my boss back in the early 90's that I wanted to buy my first gun... He was a gun nut so he took me to his favorite gun store and showed me a 686-3... 6" And next to it was a Python same length but much more expensive... He said they had issues and I should buy the Smith... 20 years later I'm glad I followed his advice... What a tack driver...

JS Krawz I had a similar choice also. Buying my first revolver, between a used Colt Python which costs more than a brand new 686, I chose the 686. Was never a fan of the Colts because of the cylinder release, chintzy reason I know lol. Seriously, both are great guns.

I've had in my possession a 6 inch 686-3 since 1989 that I paid $319 for brand new. It has never misfired and likes whatever ammo I put thru it. The best group I ever got was one ragged hole with all 6 shots at an indoor range at 50 ft. Averages 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups all day. Still looks new even with all of the magnums put downrange. No major maintenance ever done except when one chamber got out of time sending a round 3 or 4 inches from the group. S&W sent me a new cylinder at no cost ( lots of kudos to a company willing to do that) and groups are back to normal. It's a gun that just works. I'll never sell it and it will be in the family for a long time. Heard the python was having timing issues. Don't know if that's been corrected, but I just can't justify the price of the new pythons if they're defective.

My first handgun purchase when I was in college came down to my budget. I preferred the beautifully smooth double action of the Python, but it was $400 in blue compared to the 686 in SST around $200. I always regretted that I didn't buy a Python when I had more money, but I still have that 686 for some 37 years and it has been a great and accurate gun that gave me the confidence to hit anything at which I aimed. Now looking at new Python and it's more affordable relative to my pay but still hard to justify at today's prices when there are so many great guns out there.

I had a 4" & a 6" python at the same time, because of how beautiful they are, but they did not stand up to factory 38+P or 357 magnum heavy usage. 7000+ rounds a year, is what I was shooting, (the ammo was free to me, if it was shoot at our departments range). Both Colt failed at 500-700 rounds, numerous time. The spring under the cylinder, holds a pin that holds the cylinder locked while firing. The coils would break. Colt always fixed them, and sent me spare springs. The excuse was, .... this is a range gun, meant to enjoy at the range with, 158 grain wadcutters, (.38 special). They where sold. My Smith & Wesson model 66, (not as strong as the 686), would go between 12-14,000 rounds before Smith & Wesson factory would rebuild them. I had two model 66 rebuilt twice ..... I do love the look of the Python, so I had gunsmith in the NorthWest build me a "Smolt", a s&w frame with a Colt 6" barrel. It worked great ! If you are wanting a combat revolver, buy the Smith & Wesson 686, 4", it is a heavy duty gun. You do your part, it will do it's job the first time.

The cost difference (NEW) between the Colt & S&W in 6" is $1450 vs. $925 respectively. I went with the Plus Deluxe (7-shot) which would run about $50 more. By the way, another difference between the two is that the Colt chambers clock-wise, and the S&W chambers counter-clockwise. If you don't load a full chamber, keep that in mind.

I carried a S&W 586 4” when I was an LEO. I own a Python. Personally, I prefer the Python because of its smooth action, trigger pull and its appearance. Good video on the comparison!👍

I love Pythons, hands down my favorite revolver of all time. Never shot the 686 and was unaware of the cylinder release on them, makes way more sense to push forward than pull back. Might have to try one out!

@@howardjohnson6584 while i agree that the 686 is probably better than the python, i personally think my colt has a nicer trigger than my smith, but who knows being all hand built the trigger may very from gun to gun and my python may just have a really nice trigger. 686 is undoubtedly a beefier more durable wheel gun though.

Although I don`t care for the cylinder release on the Colt Python, I`ll take that EVERY DAY over any other revolver, including and especially a s&w. I JUST got my brand new Colt Python 4.25", and I`m going to shoot the crap out of it and hand it down to my son.

I’d have to say, 686 old school attracts me the most, don’t like the key or the rib venting ( belongs on a shotgun in my book) and I like the 4+”” barrel, but I’d take either one for Christmas.

Years ago two at our club competed with Pythons. Most shooters purchased used S&Ws because they were available, affordable and easy to service. Pythons seldom appeared on the used market and new ones cost triple compared to a used Smith. The Python was smooth and accurate. Everyone admired the Pythons; and S&W shooters often said they just didn’t want to compete with anything so beautiful.

The handgun that I like the most and shoot the most accurately is the Smith and Wesson model 586 in. 44 magnum. The heavy lug of metal that runs under the barrel really offsets the recoil and keeps the muzzle down.

I found that I liked the 686 over the python. Most of the time I have looked for the two guns the 686 is MUCH less expensive. The Python runs around 2k. As a retired gunsmith the python is harder to tune than the 686. At least to me.

I collect S&W's, pre lock guns only. The price continues to climb because many agree the post lock guns aren't quite the same. I would like a Python but I can't justify the much higher price. Not sure about the durability either. Thanks for the video.

@@paulvogt9308 While I like some of the newer S&W designs I don't like having a external lock and I prefer not to have MIM parts in a gun if possible. So I shop for older pre lock guns. It's a personal preference, and I enjoy shopping online for firearms of many types. It's a interesting pastime. You can get a much better technical breakdown from a good S&W Book.

Waaaaaay back in the day, I was choosing between a Model 29 & a Python.........I liked the python's looks better, but at that time they had " timing issues" with the gun .......so I bought a 29, 4 inch in nickel ..........drove the gun to S&W HDQ in New England & had them install an 8in barrel. I'd buy a new one if I wanted one.

You guys are weird. I think the lock is awesome feature. I can lock it anytime anywhere, esp around kids. I love having that extra security. That is why I chose a Smith over a Ruger because it has a lock.

@Pub Thumpin It's just more convenient. When I refer to kids I wasn't referring to my own kids. Sometimes I go over to neighbors house for dinner and they have kids so it's easier for me to lock my gun and hang it with my coat. Not a fan of removing the bullets then putting them back in again. Easier to just lock and unlock; it's very subtle so it won't alarm anyone and I can do it within my coat. Also my pant pockets tend to have holes, and bullets can drop out. That's why I don't care extra bullets. The ones in the gun is all I need.

S&W 686 all the way for me! My first two guns (back in the early 80’s) were a model 19 and 686. For some reason I sold them. Forward to 2020 I found a 686, 7 shot PLUS, just an awesome gun! This one is not going anywhere.
