The 2020 highlander has safety sense 2.5. Most toyotas still has safety sense 2.0. I believe 2.5 is a small improvement with better low light pedestrian detection

Great vid! Couple Questions : 1)on the hold brake function. What’s that for? Is it for when in red light complete hit the brake and car stop then it will auto hold it?(means I don’t need to hit brake to hold stop) 2)what’s difference between radar cruise and lane departure/trace assist. Is it radar cruise will help maintain set speed and keep fixed distance of front car and also keep in lane? And lane assist just only monitor if car shifting or changing lane and give alarm? Thanks! Great video!
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! 1. Brake Hold, you've got it right, when you come to a complete stop, it'll hold the vehicle at a stop and keep the brake lights illuminated. No need to hold the brake pedal. It'll do this every time you come to a stop. 2. The Adaptive Radar Cruise and the Lane Departure/trace assist can work somewhat separately or in tandem. The Radar Cruise, on its own, will only set the speed and then adjust as traffic ahead dictates. It can be used without any sort of lane assistance. If you have the Active Lane Keep System on, it turns into the more centering Trace Assist when combined with the cruise control function. If you don't have cruise control on, it can be two levels of system, it can be merely a passive warning when the car edges towards and then outside the lane boundary. If you elect to make it "active" (I believe this is through the display in the gauges and using the thumbpad on the steering wheel) then it will start with a soft alert, and then a steering nudge to try to keep you in the primary lane. Hope that makes sense!

Great video and explanation. I’m confused about one thing. In other videos it shows the lka disabling if you take you hands off the wheel for 20 seconds but you were able to keep your hands off for 6 minutes. What is the difference?
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
Was pretty surprised by the Highlander. We were on a pretty straight stretch of highway here, just very light active steering corrections needed at most. Even still most modern car will chime in much sooner, as you've seen. Highlander definitely is using a torque based system on the wheel, not a touch capacitive sensor as in some cars. Even still, some cars with torque based systems will think you've taken hands off the wheel on straight stretches even when your hands are on the wheel! So maybe just enough of the light active movements to keep itself engaged.

very useful review, how well does it do in curves?
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
It’s okay in the curves, felt fairly natural as I was driving through, didn’t feel like I was constantly fighting it. Obviously the system is meant to be hands on, it is by no means a hands off driving aid.

Own a '20 Highlander XLE, do you know what it means when the blue lane assist lines on the sides keep blinking during cruise control? Blinking = not fast blinks just does not stay solid like in the video.
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
If both blue lines are flashing/blinking usually means that driver needs to steer/provide steering input. It's not meant to be a self-driving/hands-free type of system.

@Carsplain Have you had any instances where the Automatic Emergency Braking worked or malfunctioned? Some Toyota owners have posted videos testing it out and it not working so am wondering what your experience has been. Thanks!
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't see any widespread issues with either false triggers or malfunctions on the Toyota products. And I believe you can adjust your sensitivity level if you want to. Nissans and Hondas had some widespread issues with too many inadvertent emergency braking triggers which could result in being rear ended, but haven't heard/seen too much chatter on those recently.

I have a 2021 RAV4 LE, I feel like the safety sense needs a lot of improvement, the ping pong movement makes it almost unbearable and you have to always keep your hands on the steering wheel because if you let go of the steering wheel after 20-30 seconds the "hold the steering wheel" alarm sounds

It was a very unique set of circumstances it seemed that allowed for such a gap. Not sure if it was all the super subtle shifts that kept it from triggering hands on wheel alerts. But yes, this is by no means a hands off system and was surprising. Was shocked at how long it continued on

Does the lane trace assist work on a road that is curvy and not straight? Can you use lane trace assist with only one hand on the wheel, or does it want two hands? And can it be used without the cruise control being on? Thanks.
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
It's in no means any sort of semi autonomous driving system. It's purely meant as a driver aid. It will attempt to aid the driver in keeping the car centered even on curves, but it won't drive through a curve for you. Lane Trace only works in conjunction with the cruise control function, otherwise you have more standard lane keep assist that will still try to nudge you to stay in your lane. The system uses a torque input based driver feedback system, so it could be one hand. Haven't seen a system that requires both hands on.

Hey my name is Talisa Smith i actually work at team one toyota in rainbow city it does not require both hands on steering wheel one would be fine. and yes it will still work with cruise control on/off and also it works great on curvy roads. i hope i was some help for you.
@wstt4
@wstt4 3 жыл бұрын
@@Carsplain I'm confused. How can it keep the car centered in the lane if on a curve and not steer the car through the turn? In order to keep the car centered as you enter a curve, it would have to steer the wheel. Also, are there two different systems Lane Trace assist for when cruise control is on, and Lane Keep Assist for when cruise control is off? Is one better than the other?
@wstt4
@wstt4 3 жыл бұрын
@@talisasmith1351 It appears the cruise control needs to be on for Lane Trace Assist. On Toyota's website it says, "Lane Tracing Assist NEW ) - When Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is enabled and lane markers are visible, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) uses the lines on the road and preceding vehicles to help keep the vehicle centered and in its lane."
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
@@wstt4 it will attempt to help keep the car centered in the curve, only to a certain level/point. So yes, it will start to make a steering action to follow a curve, but if you take your hands off the wheel then it can't hold tight curves entirely on its own, it will drift out. The lines seem to indicate more of a lane keep assist when not in cruise control, and more active lane centering/trace assist with cruise control.

@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
The 2019 Camry XSE has full speed adaptive cruise (so it can bring you to a stop) and it has lane departure with steering assist, but doesn’t have the Lane Tracing Assist, so it may be more ping pong like between the lane lines, vs lane centering. 2021 Camry was updated for the newest system.

@Carsplain 2 жыл бұрын
System works very well, keeps car centered and is reliable for situations it works in. It is NOT a self driving system and it’s not a hands free capable system. Tesla is not the benchmark in this area. Really think systems like SuperCruise and BlueCruise are phenomenal for hands free driving when it’s allowed.
