I had an opportunity to have a quick test ride on Northside Motorcycles' demo Aprilia Tuono 660, as my first ride on the new Aprilia mid-capacity platform.
Here's my thoughts on what Aprilia have achieved, some of the similarities with the V4 models and the Aprilia character, as well as the Tuono 660 as a whole.
The Aprilia Tuono 660 is available for $20,190 Ride-Away.
If you're interested in checking out the Tuono 660, give Northside a call or look them up on Facebook, conditions allowing:

I spent a long time debating several different makes, and also debating the different Aprillia bikes, and I decided on this one and I have had it for a couple of weeks now. I left the dealership in commute mode, and I liked it but although it is really my first sport bike I was a little disappointed. But I tried all the available settings and made my own individual set up and then the bike just came alive and I really love it. It’s just a great deal of fun, and there’s no point in the power that feels weak at all. That power, the control, look and sound are just a blast and I am sure that although I would love the big tuono, or the other models I considered, I made the right choice. It’s just a blast.

Honestly I'd take the Tuono 660 over the V4 1100 any day, for the street there's more performance than I'd need and it's definitely a lighter feeling bike, while still capturing the kind of load-out I'd expect from Aprilia. It's also great the electronics can make such a big impact on the performance, as it can offer a few bikes in one kind of thing when you're after a more relaxed ride.

very well nuanced review man; compliments. i think you covered everything someone should know when looking at this bike. i like your take on it and i agree with everything you had to say except maybe for the brakes, because they're amazing (i almost exclusively use the fronts). you can get the imu and quickshifter as optional extras, or you can get the factory edition now in 2022 which also throws in a suspension upgrade, which is what i did. someone pointed out to me that there's an accessory called Aprilia MIA which is pretty cool, lets you do phone/nav/music stuff from the dash i long doubted whether or not i found 100 hp to be enough of an upgrade compared to the mt-07 i had, but it's such an upgrade in every other department, especially the tuono 660 factory that i decided it was worth it. i can't get over the looks of the competition; they're just really ugly. the mt-09 in particular; i would never get off that bike thinking "wow stunner", which is important to me. i want to feel cool. i also found the ktm to be really wobbly; if you enjoy being reminded that you could enter a tank slapper at any moment, definitely get one of those lol. the aprilia really does feel like it's on rails, even at speed. i even tried inducing a wobble; couldn't do it

Aprilia nailed it on the looks and they are an amazing machine. I reckon the XSR900 is the go for styling over the MT-09 personally.

Great review Kris. Thank you. I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts and review of the LAMS version and the see how they have restricted it. Is it like how Triumph has done with the 660 street triple (full power and torque until the ECU reduces it to around 35-40% at about 6,300 rpm? The LAMS one is a bit hard to swallow considering it only about $500 cheaper with half the power... 👍😎🇦🇺

@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully I can get my hands on one, I think that'll be the big question. That said they seem to be doing a better job with restriction these days (RbW no doubt helps), where the ole throttle stop could be pretty intrusive or leave the feeling of waiting for everything to catch up.

Acceleration went up a notch maybe around 7000 rpm, and was more relaxed (but with nice torque) throughout below that, but not in a way I'd describe as a dead spot.

I don't like the part-fairing look but viewed from the seat, the low screen looks good. Ditto the dash. Of the 650s, I'd have an XSR700. Failing that, an SV650. I have no need for excessive electronics.
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
Part of me wishes they'd gone no electronics, and seen how low they could get the price, which probably doesn't fit the Aprilia brand, but I still think would have been cool to see. I guess though with all the Euro regulations these days, adding electronics is probably a small addition on what already has to be done, so that could be a big factor there.
@sebastian8294
@sebastian8294 3 жыл бұрын
i love all Tuono electronics ❤. You can adjust everything until the bike best suits to your riding style! Why don't you want that? Electronics in particular make a bike 1000x times safer in an emergency. It can save lives! The cruise control is in particular so great for touring. I want never drive by touring a bike without electronics again, once you've had it.

@@sebastian8294 Electronics are something to go wrong. ABS and maybe traction control are the only safety features you need.
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
@@sebastian8294 Electronics are a nice safety net for when riding skills and awareness run out, but if I could buy the Tuono for less without them, I would without hesitation. I think it would be cool to see a lot more people riding Aprilias, but for many riders (especially young riders) price is a big point. Cruise control is certainly nice too, but I'd say the big benefit there is in holding onto your license with a set speed over safety. It is of course only a daydream and electronics are taking over on most offerings now. And you're right, they only need to save you once and they're very welcome indeed.

Great looking bike nice review have you ridden the mt-07 how does it compare power wise
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly they are a different class of machine in my mind, as the pretty massive price difference suggests. The Tuono is far more in the realm of the supersport 600s, just more road usable or more directly a machine like the Street Triple or MT-09. The MT-07 is great, but it's offering low down torque and I'd probably say more character, but not the same top end. I'm a bit hesitant to emphasise the Tuono or RS 660 as a '650 class' bike as a result, the engine capacity is in the right spot, but the real competition is other machines.
@Matt-zt6uc

@@MotoJournoKris thanks for your info so it would definitely be a step up to go tuono. do you have any experience on how it might compare to a 790 Duke
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 2 жыл бұрын
@@Matt-zt6uc I tested the 890 Duke R and felt like the two were close comparison. The Tuono may be a little more forgiving, where the Duke has a bit more performance, however you can't really go wrong with either if you ask me. Both are a major step up from the MT-07, if you want more power and a higher overall spec machine.

Brilliant review 👍 I've been looking at these as here in the UK you can get a new old stock 2021 for sub 8k but I've been riding a very long time and wondered if this would be enough to keep me grinning as I'm trying to step away from over powered license shredding machine's 😆 Looking at a 2020 triumph 765RS or this...how do you think they compare?
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 2 жыл бұрын
Despite being down on power in that comparison they are still a weapon, maybe not quite as crazy as a 765 - especially the RS, but more than enough to get into lots of trouble. Far closer to the 765 than something like the MT-07 I guess I'd say!

@@alexwotherspoon5630 Haha, exactly you don't really need that much power to do that. I'd have said it's still bordering on overkill for the road, but that's true of almost anything with close to 100 hp...
