Major issue with the 450 is fixed but still have an engine light and many fitment and quality issues. I absolutely love this truck but have lost con confidence in it. If I get a different truck it will be the Ram 3500 DRW for sure.
Help me out and tell me what has been your experience with both?

As you know any truck can have issues. I do believe your 450 is just one of those trucks that will always have problems. Sell it and get a ‘22 450. In today’s market you will still get top dollar for yours. You’ve been through enough super duty’s to know they get the job done. Good luck. You’ll make the right decision 👍🏼

A 22 would be just as bad. All the companies have newbies right off the street building 100k trucks now. Nothing has changed since 2020.

Just a thought- the way used vehicles are commanding high prices, you could order the Ram exactly how you want to spec it, try it out, then sell either the Ram or the 450, whichever you don’t prefer. Or the F350 for that matter and have two heavy haulers. You’d have options, and probably wouldn’t do bad at all on out of pocket costs given what you could sell them for. And it would be a kick-ass comparison/content for the channel!

I personally run Ram 5500’s in the sanitation field. Small rolloff container trucks that run 8-10 hrs daily & often get overloaded. Also use them to pull excavators and skid steers dry frequently for demo work. We tried out all brands in 2018 and went with the Ram. Will be ordering another soon. They simply don’t have issues. My personal truck is a 2018 Ram 5500 with 120k miles. The only thing I’ve done is routine maintenance and tires. Zero issues.

I live at over 9k ft in Colorado. Been a Ram guy since Ford abandoned the 7.3’s. Most recently, Had a 2018 Ram 3500 DRW. Major emissions problems, truck in shop for weeks. Deleted it finally and has run great since. Followed that with a 2020 Ram 3500 HO. No real problems but hated that Asian tranny. I now run a 2022 Ford 350 for only 7k but loving the 10sp and overall power train. Ford power delivery is just superior IMO. I guess can have problems with any truck out there. I don’t tow as heavy as you, 20k every week, but at high elevation and steepest grades around. Keep the Ford!

I do appreciate the transparency. I’m a Ford user and my brothers having enough of his GMCs and has a 22 F250 Platinum on order. We both plan to go over every inch of it when it arrives and use issues you’ve had as a starting point. Granted any new truck can have issues.

My dad was a long time Ford guy and I finally pushed him to ram. He can’t believe the lack of issues he’s had since he got into his 2018 3500. Besides routine maintenance he’s only had a squeak on his driver door hinge (fixed it with a quick blast of fluid film) and his rear sliding window was moving slow and it needed a little lubrication and it was fine. The only thing that kills me is he doesn’t wash it and “baby” it like he did his fords, yet this truck is the nicest one he’s owned 🤦🏻‍♂️ (it’s a limited model)

My 2021 F350 SRW XLT with 21,xxx miles has been great so far. Fit and finish is acceptable on mine but for what you paid I would expect perfection too. As far as to keep it or get rid of it idk that will have to be your decision. If I ever changed brands it probably would be a ram for me as well. I hope the 450 works out for the better for you.

I don’t haul like you and Sam do! That being said, I run an 02 F350 and have never had any issues. I researched all three in 2017 and ended up with a 2018 Ram and am very happy with it. The exhaust brake was the single greatest feature of my truck. If Ram ever comes out with a 10 speed trans in 22/23/24, I’d buy another Ram. My friends have Fords and Chevys that have way more power but I don’t really need it but I’m sure some do. Good luck my friend👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸

Keep it and give it another chance. Don't think that the Ram doesn't have their own issues. I've done a ton of research and follow Ram channels since waiting on my ordered 2022 F-450 just to be sure and yes, they have some common issues as well. There are class action lawsuits against all 3 brands at the moment. Something to think about. Remember there are a TON of power stroke 6.7L on the road right now in all trims putting in the work without a glitch. There's been 2 (f350/f450) just recently on PTT w/Arod that have over 1 million (from factory) miles on them and both were hotshot trucks. Good luck with whatever you decide though man.

Agreed. And my short two cents is that you may have a bit of diagnostics to get through - but the ford definitely won’t go up in flames like a ram would. The interior may be marginally better in a ram. But it’s a work truck…and you have this one set up just like you wanted. I had some issues with my 6.7 60k miles ago, and they were a pain, but the truck has never failed me since 120k miles later and it is still in pristine shape. Oil analysis is perfect and it works hard.

I totally agree though I’d have to hook a ram up to that load you pull daily and see how it feels in comparison. The way you have the 450 geared up to your liking I’d hang onto it unless the ram blows u away or a duramax proof is in the pudding I could care less about looks. It’s like my 6 liter people hate them I just got lucky routine maintenance and she runs like a champ works hard every day

Get the Ram, you’ll love it. I just traded my 2020 Ford F250 King Ranch 6.7 Powerstroke for a 2021 Ram 2500 Limited 6.7 Cummins and I am very happy I did. The Ford was a good truck, the 10 Speed was great, but the Ram interior is on a different level. No other brand can compare to the fit, finish and quality of the Ram interior. And I love the Cummins engine. It maybe a little slower than the Ford but thats ok cause I drive slow anyways. The exhaust brake on the Cummins is far superior to the Ford. When the full exhaust brake mode is on and as soon as you let off the gas it slows you down immediately without touching the brakes. I hated that in the Ford in order for their engine brake to work you have to tap the brakes. Anyways, give the Ram a try. Just understand that the Ram Cummins with the Aisin trans will not shift as smooth as the Ford. Other than that you’ll love the Ram. Oh and the 2021 and newer has the newly revised CP3 injection pump. So no need to worry about CP4 injection pump failures. Lastly the Ram can come with airbags from the factory.

I’ve owned 23 different powerstrokes of all generations, my 2016 was not very impressive, and my 6.0s were not impressive but we put hundreds of thousands of miles on all of them. All the 7.3s have been stellar for us our 6.4s after they were deleted with Spartan were stellar my wife’s 2019 is stellar my dads 2020 is stellar and my 2021 is stellar some times if you buy enough of anything you will find a bad one. All 4 of the Cummins pickups we’ve had have been major issues not so much with the engine but with everything else and I mean everything else!

Chrysler quality, the only reason the powertrain sticks around is because it’s not Chrysler. My family has a Ram, not a diesel but a Laramie. 100k kilometers and the thing is a piece of crap, the transfer case quit. The fuel system always leaks and needs to be replaced. It’s on its 3rd fuel tank if I’m not mistaken, along with countless other issues. I don’t know why we still have it. Everyone who used it bought a Ford to do the same job. It just sits, and has been for years. That truck alone is reason enough why I’ll never buy a Ram, I’ll still lease them in my fleet, but I’ll never own one. Especially a 2020+ I can’t even imagine what that will be like.

The one thing I can really complain about with my truck is that the thing regens all the time 🤦🏻‍♂️ and a complaint me, my dad and I’m sure many others could make is the Aisin transmission can feel weird shifting without a load behind the truck. Once there is a trailer behind it the shifting etc is awesome and tbh the heavier the better it reacts.

You’ll have a better chance finding Shangri-la then finding any brand truck without having issues at some point. I owned Everything but Ram and they all had some issues. Including Toyota which are only good for 1/2 ton use. Moving up to haulers I went with the 2020 F250 6.7 w heavy towing package spec. close to F350. No issues to date but there will be one day. Looking at new Rams today, I would consider them against Ford after I get my mileage and moneys worth out of the Ford I have. Your new lake house is unbelievable. You found a piece of Shangri-la there.

Electronics usually fail early on if they're going to, then they should be solid. The power distribution block overheat is a bit more disconcerting. I'm wondering if the trailer brake circuit runs through that block, because that was a problem on our 550. Ford hadn't sized the harness properly for a triple axle gooseneck and it couldn't supply the proper voltage to the trailer brakes.

I've got a 17 450 platinum. Love it. The pros outweigh the cons for sure. Engine and trans are the huge part that make this truck the best to me. The power is unreal.i have only towed around 12k and it feels like nothing is back there. A few negative is the drivers door never has shut right doesn't leak or anything just the lines aren't perfect. Sometimes the backup sensors acted up after disconnecting a trailer. Othere then that not much at 94k right now. Thing to remember is this is a work truck with luxury, not a luxury truck.

Ide pick the ram. I do honestly wish they would upgrade to an 8-10 speed trani. “Fingers crossed there still working on a deal with Allison 🤞” But the Cummins has enough low end grunt it never really struggles. That and the wide track axle would be a nice option for the 3500’s but no dice 🤷‍♂️ Either way I would definitely recommend test driving one first

Honestly I would get a ram because I heard so many people talk about how good the exhaust brake is and the reliability on them are insane every time I’m on the road I always see a ram towing 20,000 to 30’000 trailers on the road daily but if you got a warranty on the Ford then I would have the dealer fix the light and go over it to be safe

Personality I think your 450 is just a casualty of being built during covid hopefully your dealer can get it sorted. You’ve had 3 power strokes with no issues. Your 2020 had an emissions sensor issue which can happen to any diesel on the road today. IMO it sounds like you have more of dealer issue getting the truck sorted than a major defect on the 450 so far

Without a second thought, I would be driving a freightliner and have the trailer as a lowboy style. Down low deck, and twin screws would be close to four wheel drive as you seen there, four wheel drive didn't keep you from being sucked into the low side of the road. You have many decent choices of engines, transmissions including automatic and now days hard to find a standard in big rigs as well. I am a Kenworth kind of guy but going on Gentry and sons, they run a lot of freightliners for small truck jobs including a single screw rear end. I have a feeling that most of small equipment operators on on paper to the bank so I would rather have a good truck for it all. They make a quad cab or sleeper cab depending just what you like for this application. I also am a ford man and have been since I put a million miles on a F350 7.3 ... a 95 model with every bell and whistle and no problems, I really don't know how far those engines go but that that truck is still on the road with a better body and no issues yet.

You’re 100% right, all of the trucks have way more issues than what should be. If the people in the factories weren’t limited, if the truck could actually be finished in one day and if it got picked up by the shipper the next rather than the way it had been. This F450 would 100% be as solid as his 350 and F550 as there are no differences between the trucks other than the conditions at the factory. Ram will be the same way, that’s not even a question.

Paid the money for it, got the long warranty, has your personal specs. You'll loose money on a trade, or even if you broke even or made some the hassle of getting one, and unless you order wont be what you want. Use the difference and buy an older reg cab 6.7 powerstroke or cummins as a backup truck for the f450, and even the f550, so if you got to get warranty work it doesn't matter as much.

I honestly think you just got a lemon. Me too at that, haha. I had a 450 at one point. and absolutely loved having the wide track steering. That made a huge difference for hauling a trailer for me...the 10 speeds are phenomenal, too. I'd sell that thing outright and get a 2022 f450...the way the used market is, dealerships won't give crap on trade ins then sell them for more than they were brand new. You didn't/haven't had these problems with you 550 and your 2020 srw....get rid of this one and get a new one, make ford buy it back lol

Not sure I'd want ANY brand of late 2020/any 2021 truck. Hearing about lots of quality/mechanical/fit/finish issues from owners of all brands. Maybe stick it out for another year or so and hope they get their manufacturing/parts shortages/employee issues resolved... With the Ram, I'd be more concerned more about how it goes up the hill than how the Ford goes down it...

You know I'm right with you on losing some confidence in the F-450 but I really didn't like the transmission on the Ram. The only one I've towed with is JB Reviews' 3500 Mega Cab SRW and it towed well and had good stability for a SRW. It wasn't only that it's a 6 speed it was more the time between shifts. It was really obvious during the video JB and I did on racing the 450 and Ram towing but even in regular towing I found it very annoying. I'm going to run my 09 Silverado 3500 for the next year or so but then I plan on getting another 450. I think I would be happy with a Ram or GM but the biggest thing I'd miss is that wide track front axle. Why Ram and GM don't make a regular production 4500 pickup is beyond me. I don't think I can bring myself to spend new truck money on anything without a turning ability like that.

@@baller562009 Yes the 4500 and 5500 Ram have the wide track but aren't available as pickup truck and at least as of the last time I knew they were only available in the low output diesel. I'd love if Ram and GM would make a high output regular production pickup in a 4500.

You definitely need to get a Ram in front of that trailer. A 3500 Aisin with 4.10 gears is exactly what you need. My family has always bought Fords but I switched in 99. I finally got my dad to switch in 2019 and now he questions why he waited so long. Trust me, I bust his balls often lol. He always neglected his truck but now he washes and cleans the interior at least every 2 weeks. I asked him why and he said " because this is the truck I plan to keep". Rams are a far simpler design which make them much easier to work on. Extremely important especially when you rely on your truck to help make you money. As you know, the exhaust brake is incredible and will slap your head on the windshield if needed. Guys routinely go well over 100K miles without needing to replace brakes since the exhaust brake works so well. Like anything, maintenance is key. Keep the oil, fuel, and transmission filters changed and you'll be rewarded with extremely long service life. Ram has always had their quirks but I believe that began to change with the 2014+ update. There's a reason many consider the later 4th Gen Rams as the best trucks ever made. They went backwards a bit in 2019 & 2020 when they went to a CP4 but quickly changed that in 2021. They are now recalling all CP4 trucks to replace the pump which no other manufacturer has stepped up to do. That decision has went a long way in the minds of Ram owners.

Ram doesn't make the powertrain . a 3500 ram with 4.10s and a 6 speed isn't going to tow better than a 450 with a 10 speed 4.30s. You said you switched in 99 those old dodge trucks were garbage everyone I've seen the dash is falling apart and had transmission issues.
@redtitan29
@redtitan29 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattd19902010 Why does it matter who makes the powertrain? You need to go Ram if you want their package. Ford only decided to manufacture their own diesel when they got into a dispute with Navistar over who should foot the bill for warranty repairs. Unlike the Ford/Navistar relationship, Ram/Cummins have stuck with the same basic engine architecture since the beginning of their partnership. The Cummins is simply a well built workhorse designed for longevity that responds extremely well to power upgrades. While Im not going to compare a Ram 3500 to a Ford 450, the 6 spd Aisin is plenty stout, geared damn near perfectly to the low revving Cummins, and will pull a heavy load all day every day without complaint.

I suggest a pre covid truck…. You can’t get the wide axle in a ram that isn’t derated. Might be annoying to drive a truck that doesn’t feel as powerful. I also assume that it would be counter intuitive to go with a truck that has a regular front end after having the wide axle because I assume in your line of work you are in tight areas sometimes. I think a 450 really is your best option. The covid manufactured rams are having extreme build quality issues in terms of leaky door seals and the hood of the truck wobbling (thin metal). It also has been reported that ram has also have been experiencing electrical problems with their trucks just like ford. It’s really a tough decision if I’m keeping it real. I hope you stay ford. Haha! But man that cummins is hard to beat. I suggest a pre covid truck from either ram or ford !! ( mainly suggesting ford 😂) either way I’m still watching your videos!

I had an 18 Ram 2500 and a 20 Ram 3500 SRW with the HO and Aisin. Used them to tow equipment at work and pull my travel trailer and later my 5th wheel. Work trailers ranged from 8k to 17k lbs. 5th wheel is 16.5k lbs. The 18 Ram had no issues save for a few electronic glitches in the gauge cluster. I just didn’t like how the 68RFE shifted and sometimes didn’t respond. 68RFE definitely did not like heavy loads. Anything over 8k lbs and it’s like it forgot how to shift. The 20 Ram 3500 was night and day. The Aisin is not a smooth operator empty but once you have a load behind it, it’s awesome. Exhaust brake is so strong it feels like it’ll give you whiplash. I did have an issue with a bad 4wd actuator about 12k miles in, it would randomly toggle 4hi without me doing anything. I could be in the middle of a turn or cruising down the road when my RPMS would shoot up and next thing I know it says I have 4wd on and “service 4wd system”. Only other complaint I have with the 3500 is the god-awful paint quality. You can look at it the wrong way and it will chip. If you get the Ram I suggest getting either chrome bumpers or PPF all over the rockers and frontal area. My truck was delmonico red and it was a beautiful color, but about 10k miles in it looked like crap. My current truck is a 22 F350 SRW. The transmission in this truck is light years ahead of anything Ram has. I’m sure you already know this but it handles everything I’ve thrown at it with no issues or weird behavior. It’s hard to say which one pulls stronger but I think I’d have to give the edge to the ford. The Aisin feels like a lifetime between shifts with the defueling. The Ford body and paint also seem to be much better. I’ve got 15k miles on my F350 now and there is not a single chip or scratch on the truck. I’ve put it through the same use cycle as my Rams. The new 12” screen in the Fords is also laid out much better than Ram’s vertical orientation. About the only issue with my truck is the driver’s door is not aligned with the passenger door behind it. Very minor nitpick and you’d have to be looking very closely to notice it. Same as your 450 in that regard. Otherwise this truck has been flawless thus far. I haven’t had a chance to test drive the new 21-22 Rams with the CP3 and 1075 ft-lbs of torque but for now I’m gonna say the Fords are superior

I’ve had both. A few years ago I had a 2018 ram Cummins 4x4 crewcab 5500 flatbed with the G56. Not a single issue, just got bored and wanted to try something else. And just a few months ago had a 2020 Ford F-350 (srw) 4x4 crewcab power stroke. Ford would beat it in a race, but the dodge would beat in reliability. My ford was finicky and temperamental. My dodge never had a single issue. Obviously any truck can have any issue, but the new fords worries me long term. I tow my mini, dump, equipment trailer daily. I sold the 2020 and just went back to an old slow 7.3 power stroke. Won’t win any races and ain’t as comfortable, but still gets the job done. Ask, dodge has a waaaay better exhaust brake towing. And I mean you feel it. Fords barely does anything. You would love it. Dodge does de rate their 5500 motors, that would be the only downside

I truthfully can’t find a difference between Ford, ram , Gmc till it’s towing down hill or in city traffic, ram has the exhaust brakes down , hopefully you get those evil gremlins fixed by Ford As it’s IMO the middle child of work trucks, the best of both worlds
