Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

So I received my Lined Wool Packer earlier in the week, (yeah, don't hate on me) and it is absolutely the finest piece of outerwear I've ever owned. Growing up as a kid in Northern Colorado, right up against the front range, running a trapline in the winter, duck hunting and an occasional deer hunt, backpacking in the Rawah Wilderness Area, and fishing the rest of the year gave you the dreams to live the adventure life that's shown in the Filson catalogue. As I got older, college, work, career, and life's responsibilities slowly put those dreams to the back of my mind. Sometime this winter in SW Oklahoma, it will be cold enough that I can actually wear my new packer jacket outside for a day or two as I scout around on my little 43 acre ranch. No - it's not Alaska, but when I kick up a couple of ducks off the creek or flush a couple of quail, I'll go back to those days of being a kid with big dreams, and I'll smile a bit wistfully, but I'll be wearing the type of jacket I wore in those dreams 50 years ago. And that's worth far more than the cost of the jacket. Thanks Carl for another terrific review!

Last weekend I was in Chicago and went to the Filson store in Naperville to hopefully see the elusive $1K robe. They didn’t have it in stock. Your love/hate relationship resonates with many of your followers. I’m one. Correct me if I’m wrong but, Filson seems to have invested more in their advertising and less in their American work force. Many of your followers including me would spend the extra dollars if Filson would get back to the core values of CC Filson.

I agree completely, I've purchased several clothing items from them for forestry work but as I see their never-ending price increases and the market they're chasing I actually want to avoid purchasing from them. Shameful thing is, profit margins are higher from the fashion statement crowd so that's the way they'll keep going.

difference with the cape and double mac is that the cape coat only has a double layer on the upperbody while the double mack is double all the way from the sleeves to the upperbody. So basically that first packer coat is a double mackinaw (slightly longer) with a shearling collar

Love these clips... especially for us who live outside of the US. You gave ole Filson a bit of a beating... in fairness the prices for the US market may seem steep, but for us in Australia most of the prices are fair... if only retailers in Australia charged the US price, most will mark up about another 30-50%. We end up having to order direct from Filson and cop the $70 usd plus shipping fee. Great video, look forward to more reviews... cheers Moose.

Carhartt definitely makes the best flannel imo. I had quite a few brands and Carhartts just has done alright by me. Remember to size down though. Also beware of Filsons wool quality, supposedly wool is anti microbial, but I wore my vest on a camping trip a few weeks ago and it still stinks just like smoke. But get this, my sterkowski cap has already worn away at the smell and smells like almost nothing again. I get that the Filson wool is thicker but it’s been weeks with no luck, I expected some smell to dissipate by now but no sir. Also Schott makes a muuuuch heavier wool peacoat for a little over half the price of a Filson Mackinaw Cruiser. I know the jacket is less woodsy but it’s still alot heavier, I’ve been tempted to buy one and modify it to be more outdoorsy to suit my needs.

Here’s one thing you won’t find in there anymore. My 1960 Filson Forestry Wool Cruiser. I picked a NOS version on eBay with tags still attached for around $220. Unmatched quality and attention to detail when compared to the modern stuff. What I love most about it is the diagonal stitching which encourages a real comfortable and almost wind resistant fit. Plus it’s nowhere as scratchy as my new Mackinaw Cruiser that I ended up selling after a winter.

The lined ragg wool beanie's price is still pretty high IMO for a 50/50 Wool-Polyester blend. Patagonia offers a 70/30 blend Wool/Nylon for around the same price. I'd much rather have more wool over synthetics if possible.

my father passed away 7 years ago @ 71, he swore by filson products most of his adult life for the quality and durability even had a set of luggage he proudly touted. Companies evolve and change but i feel like he would be a little disappointed in some of the choice filson has made in these recent years. I believe they still make quality products but have somehow diluted their brand a bit with some items, maybe its out of necessity to stay in business. great video, enjoy the channel and content

A lot of this stuff I wouldn't find comfortable or breathable enough to actually hike/camp and work in. Especially during the winter when staying as dry as possible is #1. Double Mac doubles the fabric over the shoulders to include top pocket flaps and 1/3d way down the back, and doubles the arms. It’s great for ice fishing or a duck blind, but too warm for anything involving moving. At least here in South Dakota. P.S. Check out Anian from Canada. Made on Vancouver Island with recycled wool. I own a Mackinaw cruiser and a vest. I've seen the jack shirt. The Anian shirts are 17 oz Melton wool and just 198$ CAN. ( around 150$ US ). Best shirt i've ever owned.

For US Made Filson stuff, I am willing to pay a premium. For they overseas stuff, no!
@Newspeak.
@Newspeak. 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t completely disagree that a lot of their stuff is overpriced but also some of the alternatives you mentioned are only maybe 40 or 50 bucks cheaper and might not match the look or the color. Also while filson is straying away from this more and more a lot of stuff is still made in the US and finally as a big guy I have so much better luck finding stuff that fits with filson then any of this kickstarter stuff that never goes above like XL in size. I do think their wool is worth it still for a lot of stuff and even when the price is too high it still is sure to be a very high quality piece even if the economics really isn’t there so I don’t think it’s fair to just totally dismiss them as an option. Oh also the mackinaw blanket is 100% mackinaw wool and is bigger then alot of other options while really not being too far off in price. I’d say that if you care about quality that should factor in when evaluating this stuff and I’m poor myself and am lucky to have the few filson pieces that I have so I’m not coming at this from being rich and out of touch or something. I desperately want that damn Sherpa packer coat but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to justify it nor will I voluntarily go someplace so cold I would need it but who knows maybe there will be another sample sale at their factory and I will get lucky.

I would be very willing to pay the price of some of these Filson goods, but - my biggest gripe - no long or tall sizes, or very limited selection of goods that are tall or long.

Their website shows long versions of all of the Macs, or rather it did last time I looked. I bought a 44 long single Mac at a ranch store in Wyoming a long time back, but seldom wore it because the sleeves were too long. Finally I sold it on consignment.

I saw a review of the wool cruiser and you can look right through it. It has a very loose weave and that is unacceptable for a 24 oz fabric in my opinion. I do not expect wool to be woven as tight as duck or cordura, but for something that heavy it's not something I'd spend 500 bucks on.

Hahaha sorry but they wont change that. Thats how capitalism works: put the prices up as high as possible till people stop buying. The Brand is now a luxury Brand with an workwear/Vintage Heritage Image. And they sell it all to the Hipsters... There almost like Harley Davidson: they sell a "Lifestyle/Dream" and it just works

Notice the almost complete lack of tin cloth in their catalog? No tin packer, no tin cruiser. Hasn't been in stock in over a year and a half in my size. Finally gave up and bought a tensaw jacket instead. I'll probably be happier anyway.
