2021 Giant Trance X E+ Pro 29 1. Electric mountain bike first look and ride!
This week I finally got to borrow the infamous 2021 Giant Trance X E bike and test it out. I loved the idea of having some of my friends ride with me and have them push the pace a bit while I stayed on my trusty Orbea Oiz. If you all have any questions feel free to ask.

My name is Rob I’m the owner of the Trance that was used in this video. To all of the people who dismiss the e bikes, I’m now 62 years old I raced motorcross back in the early 70s and then became a part time ski instructor, then got into mountain biking in the 80s. Since then I raced thousands of miles on sailboats. Now haveing had both hips replaced ( wore them down to stumps) 21 years ago and just got a new knee. The e Trance makes it possible for me to outride most of you haters out there !! I still have the skill to ride all the trails at the Whitewater center and all the trails in the area. Now with the e bike I can ride up 98 % of the steep ones too. So to all of youngsters out there just remember that someday after you have walked and rode thousands and thousands of miles that you too will need a little help getting up the tough ones!

Hi, I hail from Germany and have owned The Trance E Pro2 (2020 model) with 27.5 wheels. I have owned the bike since June of last year and have ridden almost 2500 miles on it. I recently had the opportunity to test ride the Trance X 2021 with 29er wheels. After riding it for a full day, I came to the conclusion that I prefer the 27 inch wheels over the 29. My bike seems much more agile. It takes a little getting used to, but I now leave the bike in progressive mode so the sensors actually adapt to my riding style and it takes the guesswork out of switching between power modes. It feels a little strange at first but it definately works in my favor. Yes, I was sceptical on e bikes at first and hating on them as some purists still are, but after riding non e trail bikes for over 20 years, I definately see the benefits. My riding range has easily doubled. Where I was riding 10-15 miles a ride before, now I do 30. The best thing is that it is putting more asses on seats and now there are many more people on bikes. And people with minor disabilities can get out and ride.

I used to race XC in my teen and early 20s, I lived for mountain biking, but here I am 25 years later full time job kids family obligations my fitness level has suffered a bit. I decided to take my health back and started riding again on a Santa Cruz hard tail. The rides were fun but I was feeling pretty beat up after. I just picked up a deal on a 2021 Giant Trance E + Pro 3, Ive been on 3 rides and I feel great, I ride farther, still get a great cardio work out but don’t feel as beat up after. Love my new e bike !!

Great video! My wife and I are avid road cyclists but are spending a lot of time in a cabin near some great MB trails. We were early adopters of commuter ebikes but the thought of buying one as part of our exercise regime was a non starter. Things changed when we started asking riders of ALL ages on the trail why they opted for the peddle assist. The answer we heard over and over was and was also mentioned by your friend John is that they can now cover double or triple the miles that they used to. We decided to try some of these exact models out at a tour company and where throughly impressed at how novice riders like us could have some serious fun. Ours arrive this coming Friday. Thanks again for the great video. It confirms that for my wife and I (50 & 55) they will be a great fit. We are not looking to break any downhill records just want to put our butts in seats as often as possible. Please thank John for his thoroughly enjoyable commentary and laughs.

Thanks so much for the comment. I'm all for anything that can get more butts on bikes. I'm sure you both will have a blast exploring all the trails on your new machines!

Thank you very much for the first impressions of an E bike. Never owned one. Very informative. Been riding bikes for a very long time. I live in the Raleigh area and have a 2021 stance one and a 2021 talon 2 27.5 and 29. If you are ever in the Raleigh area you’re more than welcome to take them to the trails here and give your first impressions.

Man Mossie!!,,, you hit that outer loop climb like it was nothing. I guess I'll need to install a "watch your speed radar Speed Sign" next to the trail to slow you down LOL...... Anyway thanks for filming your footage at Mountain Island Park Trails. Keep up the good work.

Gotta love how Mossie does Real World reviews. John barely had time on this powerful bike and saw the potential. It's not a motorcycle. Staying in "3" and applying more pedal power, rarely even shift once you are in the sweet spot, only hit 5 for a few seconds to catch your breath on a steep up is learning the cadence miracle. This bike shines if you're doing serious ups, like 8 miles up a ski resort to 10,000'. Then you yodel your way up, still constantly pedal, but imagine getting ready for 17-24 mile days, and this model might top at 40 miles range depending a lot on rider weight. 52lbs is not light, so downhilling is a freight train, but keep the power on 2 cuz 1 is not there, you need some reactions out of the bike. Adding Ergon grips and Diety flat Deftrap pedals makes a huge difference in control. Downsides are higher maintenance, hand wash/detail, no riding in rain/mud as your electronics will get wonky. You might burn a rear hub/chain after 700 miles due to the strain on your mechanicals. Giant hit a homer with the Trance X E series, very reliable motor, 80 Nm of torque is plenty, charges fast, and is reasonably priced.

Hey Cameron, my name is Cameron also! I met Chandler at the first Charlotte Winter Short Track race and had a fun time chatting before his race. Did you decide not to do short track this year?

I just talked to Chandler yesterday! I might be able to do one of them but that would be it. My schedule didn't line up this year. There is an awesome two day race at the end of this month I am signed up for that overlapped the end of the series.

So, I'm very intrigued by e bikes. My wife and I are getting back into the sport. I used to ride every day 20 years ago. She isn't that skilled at all. Definitely a beginner. She fatigues and wants to turn around after 2 miles on a gravel path. She used to run 5k's for fun 4 times a year, so she's not crazy outta shape. I really want her to enjoy this sport and get outdoors more with me. In your opinion, would getting her an e bike help her put extra miles on the bike? Or should she just slowly build her endurance? I worry she'll give up before getting to where she can do 10 miles in one go.

Some people believe E-bikes are for lazy people. In fact you get a better workout as the E-bike makes you work harder by stealth, you go further, faster and enjoy yourself more. You can't make a call until you've tried it. There is a place for a normal MTB too in your garage.

I wholeheartedly agree. I've never been against E-bikes but I like them even more after doing some testing this past week. If it gets more people riding then I am all for it!

I’d stay with a normal bike. The Giant Trance X 29 2 has been fun so far. Perhaps a future video on nutrition would be good. Pre and post races too. Would be interesting to see what others eat as well.

I'm definitely not an e biker but it was fun to test one out nonetheless. I have a two day race at the end of February that I plan on doing a few videos on, I will definitely throw my nutrition information in it as well!
