It’s time for another MacBook Pro comparison! I pit the previous high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel’s 2.4GHz i9 processor against Apple’s newest 16-inch MacBook Pro with the high-end M1 Max processor! Let’s see how much better performance Apple silicon is able to achieve!

I actually bought the 2019 when it first released and well love it... I have no issues with it so far. The speakers on it are killer and it's still crazy fast for all the tasks that I need to do on it.... My only problem with it is that literally the next apple event they announced the new apple silicon which caused my MacBook to drop in price over night ;(... However, if anyone is in the market for a new MacBook do not write off the 2019. You can probably find one for a steal right now... Even though I am a little mad 😡 about apple silicon, I am definitely looking forward to getting a newer MacBook with apple silicon whenever my Intel MacBook kicks the can

I just bought a 2019 MacBook Pro, 2.4GHz 8-core i9, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD storage. It costed me €2629, compared to €4769 for a M1 Max with same RAM and storage. The price difference made the 2019 an obvious choice for me. That being said, if money isn't an issue there is absolutely no comparison, the newer MacBook Pro models are way better.

I’ve been debating that exact machine. I’ve been swayed though because the 14” M1 with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB is about the same price. You don’t need as much RAM. The screen may be a little smaller but the resolution is better… so more pixels. And I can go without the internal storage as I’ll be connecting my NVME xternal.

I bought a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" last fall, then as I researched the likelihood that Apple would be putting their new silicon chips in the new MacBooks I ended up returning it. I never really got to use it but I feel like I would've liked the Touch Bar. I was blown away by the screen and sound of the 2019 version. I am still awaiting my new 16" that I ordered and I'm excited to do some video stuff with my GoPro footage of my family.

@@BladyCarrasco17 I would say yes at that price - just bear a few things in mind: I use mine for video editing, recording music and graphics. Your uses may be different. Also - the model I picked is 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD drive. I don't know which one you're considering - 8 or 16GB? For my own uses it's one of the best buys I've ever made and I'll be using it for a long time to come. But I would say, before you make a final decision - do a bit of research on what exactly your uses would be for the next 1+ years (at least) and a bit of research on how the one you're thinking of would handle those uses: thankfully there are a lot of good reviews on youtube and the internet in general. But that sounds like an excellent price. I hope that helps in some way.

I can't wrap my head around why the m1 MacBook Pro just feels so much heavier than the 2019 even tho on paper its just slightly more weight. Maybe its the distribution or actually having a thicker device feels a lot heavier, I don't know. I like the 2019 design more. Would switch to m1 for the more durable design and battery/overheating issue with the 2019 as I move to Thailand where I think the 2019 will struggle in the heat...

You don't even need i9 to code. Coding is bascially text editing. If you are to run some scripts, compile code or emulate iOS and Android devices, the i7 could do the job. It really depends on how far you are going with your coding. Also, it depends on how much you do multi-tasking. Overall, the M1 offers better performances, but comes at a premium price. Said otherwise, you'll be just fine with the 2019! :)

I started with a 13” 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar which I loved and passed down to my son . I play the guitar through the Mac so the Touch Bar works really well, I can control effects without putting my plectrum down. I am using the 2019 MacBook Pro 16” and once again I love it. The new MacBook Pro I am not so keen on. The good parts are the separate power because anyone who has the 16” 2019 version will know the battery drains when the laptop is working hard. Most of my cycle counts are due to this because I always use it plugged in. HDMI I also like but many complain. I have the usb c to HDMI adaptor but I hate the fact the usb c ports in the MacBook start to feel sloppy after a ew plug in and outs. The new screen is better but only when they are side by side you will notice. I hate the new keyboard, looks like a cheap plastic inlay to me and not the apple class I was expecting. I use the Mac in bootcamp a lot to play games and for CADCAM so I have kept my 2019 model and bought a Razen Blade advance 15” for the windows apps. For anyone who is interested the Razen is great for games because of the 3080 gpu but the idea was to sell my Mac. I will be keeping my Mac as well because they are really that good

Been using them both for a while and yes the M1 is faster, has better sound and a nicer screen, but I HATE the way it looks. Kinda' chunky like an old G4 model, this is a real backward step Apple, as is the extra weight and the loss of the touch bar. I hated the touch bar before I got used to it, but now I've been using it for years I don't want to lose it and it's way quicker for some actions (like finding emojis, or accurately getting the volume you need). Maybe that's not important to you but the details like the smaller on/off button and the notch-free screen are to me important - as is the uber-stylish design of the 2019 model and I also prefer the slightly darker colour. The new one is good, and will be even better with the new M2 chip that's just been announced but I wish Apple would go back and revisit the design details, because that round-edged chunky-monkey look they've gone for is definitely a retrograde step and puts me off upgrading right now...

Anyone who's buying a new MBP now shouldn't get intel versions. They are past and there is a reason for their fast dicrease on the second-hand market. I've got a 16" MBP, Intel version, and it's good stuff. But the new ones are another story. They last longer, and they are just so powerful. Sure, it looks a little bit sexier with its thin look and its touchbar, but trust me, it's not worth it right now, unless you plan to use Windows. Personnally waiting for the next 14" version, I'll take it with the most boosted specs. I'll get a little less performances because of its size (compared to the 16" one), but it surely will be enough and I'll get extra portability. I'm going to miss the Touchbar a little bit. Still hope they're going to make a version with it.

I would like to see a performance comparison between last year's 16" MBP with the 5600M GPU & 32GB of RAM and this year's max'd out M1 Max with 64GB of unified memory ( both with at least 2TBs of SSD ). That would be a comparison between what I currently have and what I have already ordered. ( No, I'm not a professional videographer, audiographer or photographer that does his own high powered editing... I'm just a hobbyist with a passion for high tech toys. ) I have watched a whole lot of reviews, but none have compared this year's and last year's beast configurations. Waiting for my M1 Max to arrive (around Nov 17) is killing me with anticipation. If I had ordered it sooner, I would be getting it sooner, but I had to wait for my wife's blessings. ( I have been happily married for 50 years. She has never said no, probably because I always ask first. ❤️ ) 😎 Oh... congratulations to all of you who have opted for Apple Silicone. I'm sure that you will be happy with your choice.

I considered a very similar MBP 2019 16" listed at a bit more than $2000 CAN. For the 2021 model, at the very least I would upgrade the SSD to 1TB and double the ram to 32GB. Of course with such upgrades, along with the ridiculous taxes in Canada, it would cost at least double that of the 2019 MBP. So, unless you're fine with the price and in need of serious power usage - and long work sessions on battery, it may be worthwhile to consider the 2019 MBP - provided that it's in excellent condition - or a different MacBook Pro model. My situation and reasoning is this: I will likely buy a new 13.3 MacBook Air M1 with 16GB ram and 1TB storage. I need something now. I recently bought the base model, but I will return it, and get another with the upgrades listed above. When I finally buy a new MacBook Pro it will stay at my home desk, and I'll carry the Air to and from office(s), hotels and meetings. I intend to use either machine for music production, and occasionally edit 4K videos - usually less than 20 minutes each. That is the most power-intensive usage I require for now, or even anticipate needing for the next couple of years. Additional information: Ultimately you make the purchase decision based on your usage and understanding of its capabilities. I have read several complaints about the heat distribution/thermals specific to 16" MBP 2019. That alone has me decided, to simply keep the MacBook Air and pick up a 4K monitor, for now anyways. I hope this post has you closer to an informed decision rather than information overload. All the best to you in your present and future endeavours.

@@WorldvsTruth thank you for your time and insight, fist off i only use traktor to dj but i want to buy a computer that would allow me to learn on producing some tracks on my free time with either ableton live 11 or the software Apple used i hear good things,,,,, or Even both if i learn how. Now in the other hand i do not know how to push the computer to its limits or what i need all i know is i need a kick ass Apple that is a 7-8/10 or close to 8 out of ten Even if i dont know how to use it. I really dont want to spend time fixing my laptop in order to learn the software. So its either a New macbook pro 14 base model or if i need it ill give that extra 500 bucks. But i also found a used macbook pro m1 13 inch 16gb ram with 2tb ssd and Apple care Till 2023 or 24 or something like that. The New one Will cost me 3500 And the used one is 1800 or Even 1700. Is the used one good enough for strickly music production and occasionaly some djing with traktor. Please help me make my mind out and save me from my gearholikism making stupid choises and maxing out to the gils, im tiered.

Finally someone with good sense likeing the touch bar. Getting a specialized row instead of a multi purpose one is not very clever, it’s going back in time. Can you imagine putting a keyboard on your iPhone? That function row on Touch Bar only virtualized the keys that are not of frequent use so not being able to get used to the virtual ones that performs the same is a mystery to me. Also with giant battery times, MagSafe should not be more important than an extra usbc thunderbolt port. A little bit more and people will start to ask Apple to put cdrom back (joke but who knows how far people can go).

@@terryquinalty I think it's great Apple actually is giving pros the needed tools to complete their work, as along with the education market, it was one of their last pillars of support during the 1990s before Steve Jobs returned and saved the company (Photoshop and Digital Audio Workstations Cubase & Ableton Live were originally macOS exclusive before opening up to both Windows and macOS). Pros don't usually care about weight (unless it's like 8 pounds or something crazy like that) and they certainly will take a few millimeters of thickness in exchange for more ports, a better keyboard, better thermal and cooling for more performance for their work, and better battery life to work longer on the go. And personally, I think Apple is making the right move here; making the Air the thin and light option for maximum portability and the Pro the heavy hitter for professionals, which is how it should have been and it was with the PowerBook series and MacBook Pro series except for October 2016, when Apple executives began to see the MacBook Pro as more a consumer/prosumer machine and it suffer because of that. - The great battery life was shrunk and made worse due to the machine no longer being thick enough to carry the 99 watt hour battery of the 2015 15 inch model - The good port selection was stripped to dongle hell (on the 2012 Retina MacBook Pros, they successfully predicted the demise of the optical drive and the replacement of FireWire with Thunderbolt, and Ethernet was niche enough to not really be needed, but the Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C future did not work for the pros using the laptops and never really panned out to begin with), not to mention that they tried to kill the most brilliant charging solution ever made in the form of MagSafe (designed based on Japanese pressure cookers' plugs) and nobody could replacate it. - The Touch Bar was a underwhelming gimmick at best and a time-waster at worst; "it just works" didn't apply to it, and it felt like a step backwards from professional, who didn't want to look at the keyboard for everything on the small number of apps that supported the Touch Bar, which was too small to be useful and froze so frequently that Apple added a physical Escape key on the 2019 / 2020 models. - The thermal limitations became very severe (to the point that the 2018 Intel i9 15 inch MacBook Pro was slower than the top-specced 2017 15 inch model unless it the 2018 model was put in the freezer, all due to the laptops becoming too thin for good cooling). Professionals don't really complain about the 2012 - 2015 models being too thin, they just wanted faster computers, and they got the opposite for more money than with an equivalently specced Windows PC, which often got hardware updates more frequently and cost less. - The flawless keyboard with an exceptional typing experience and near universal acclaim was scrapped and replaced with one of the most divisive keyboards ever in a laptop that (in my opinion) was the worst keyboard ever (apart from maybe the Dell XPS 2-in-1 MagLev keyboard, which uses a similar idea) that no matter what Apple did, they couldn't fix the faulty design to stop them from breaking or repeating keystrokes unpredictably. This was so bad that the 2019 13 inch and 15 inch models, the last ones with the butterfly keyboard, were put on the keyboard repair program the day of release, and Apple is still facing two class--action lawsuits regarding the butterfly keyboard. For a professional machine, being without a working computer is a big no-no and that exactly what these users had to do. October 2021 was the confirmation that Apple was taking the professionals seriously after being abadoned with the 2013 Mac Pro with similar issues and no updates until 2019, when the price doubled (from $3000 to $6000) for a super low amount of RAM, SSD storage, and low-end GPU for the price; it was also out of many professionals' reach, causing them to despise Apple even more. $2000 is a lot of money, but it's less money for more performance than MacBook Pros and Mac Pros were in the past. And with better reliability, I think Apple has a hit here. And this is coming from somebody who used to mock Apple for overpriced hardware and macOS as a "sterile Windows" and who left iPhones after the iPhone 7 launch without a headphone jack and the $1000 iPhone X.
