The Subaru dealer told me the reason there are multiple dents in my roof… from falling acorns… is because Subaru made the roof out of aluminum to save weight. Yes, nuts falling from a tree will dent your roof so be very careful where you park! The car is great except for a few issues. Just don’t park under tree’s.

The Crosstrek PHEV has full time regenerative braking, no need to put the select lever in "B" for regenerative braking to work. Putting it in "B" applies a little more regenerative resistance when coasting, it's essentially simulated engine braking meant for going down steeper grades. In fact, the manual does not recommend "B" mode for normal driving. It does come with a 120V charging cable for plugging in at home or any available standard outlet, not sure why you didn't mention that. Otherwise, that was a pretty informative vid, good job. We're getting 60 mpg in our 2019 Crosstrek PHEV, btw.

I've got a 2016 crosstrek hybrid, if you watch your driving you can get like 38-44mpg, depending on hills. Still the best compromise between AWD and great mpg, unless you get a super expensive Tesla but those don't have the ground clearance.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Жыл бұрын
The biggest problem I have with plug in hybrids is that you essentially have both a battery hybrid and a gas car. I have a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. The battery went at about 100K miles and was $3K to replace and I was only given a 12 month warranty at first and had to demand that they cover it for 3 years. You're giving me a brand new battery, why not cover it the same length of time? Then, of course, when the gas engine or transmission has issues, you have to deal with that too. It's actually the worst of both worlds. I love the fact that it's a V6, but if I had to do it again, I'd just get a gas car or a BEV.
@jensn6490 Жыл бұрын
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 $3k really isn’t that bad but it’s true they are more complex. I think it’s like $18k to replace the entire battery in my Chevy Bolt. There’s the potential to replace single packs within the batteries if the technicians know what they’re doing and it could save a ton of money.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Жыл бұрын
@@jensn6490 Sure, a car that runs on nothing but the battery is going to have a much larger battery and will therefore be way more expensive to replace. However, if you have, I don't know, a Tesla Model 3, those cars are still on the road with over 400K miles, so let's just say at half a million miles the battery goes and you have to replace it. At that point, I'd probably just junk it and buy a new car. 400K miles is way more than I've ever gotten with my gas cars. What I wouldn't want, however, is for my transmission and engine to go, as happens with your typical gas car and on top of that have to replace the battery at 90K miles as well. With that said, I'm actually considering buying the 2023 Crosstrek Hybrid. I need to do more research to find out how many miles will it go before the battery needs to be replaced. Most of my driving is less than 17 miles and if 80% of the time my trips are less than that, I could save a ton on gas and not have to be so worried when gas is $5 a gallon. Add to that the rebates we get for buying a plug in hybrid and the cost is pretty comparable to just buying a gas car.

@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Hi, owner of a 2020 Crosstrek Hybrid here. The battery has a 15 year / 150,000 mile warranty. Also, the battery is much, much larger than something like a Honda Accord hybrid, meaning that as it naturally loses capacity over time, all that will happen is the range might go down by one or two miles. Heat is the number one thing that degrades batteries. The battery in the Crosstrek Hybrid has a cooling system, so it will be less susceptible to that. If you didn't know, the car is jointly engineered and produced with Toyota, a name synonymous with both hybrids and reliability. The transmission in this car is actually not a CVT in the traditional sense. It has variable ratios but that is accomplished with a planetary gear set, a WAY simpler design that Toyota has been using for years. Known to be one of the most reliable transmission designs. The engine in this car is the same one used in a regular Impreza/Crosstrek, and is reliable as long as you keep up with the maintenance. (Full synthetic oil, changed every 6,000 miles or 6 months, per the manual.) And as far as MPG goes, I usually average around 85 MPG. I charge it every night and drive about 50 miles a day. I really like the car and can't say enough good things about it. The AWD is absolutely incredible. I am a big time skier and this thing is literally UNSTOPPABLE even in the worst snowstorms, provided you install winter tires.

When running in EV mode what accessories are running off of the high voltage battery? The 12 volt battery in my 2019 Crosstrek failed and I had to get it towed. The dealer told me I wasn’t charging my 12 volt battery enough because I wasn’t using the gas motor as much as I should. I had to pay for the tow but they gave me a new 30 month battery. That’s a 2 1/2 year battery. Then he tried to sell me a battery minder. A small battery charger for the 12 volt battery. So I’m asking… what accessories are running off the high voltage battery and what is running off the 12 volt battery? If they only gave me a 2 1/2 year I’m thinking it can’t be that important. I would think the alternator should be spinning when the car is in EV mode otherwise a lot of people are going to get stuck. Especially if the dealer is only putting in 2 1/2 year batteries.

To pay about $7k over the comparable fully loaded Limited gas version to lose all that trunk space for an already tiny trunk for a useless 17 measly miles best scenario all electric range is not worth the trade off. You would be essentially hauling around dead weight most of the time because the battery will be drained. The mpg between the gas and the PHEV version are pretty much identical also. The 17 all electric range isn't enough to make a difference for most people so you should just save the $7k for something else because you will need to keep and drive the PHEV version for a long time to recoup the $7k. If all you care is to have one to save the environment even, the measly 17 miles may not make much of a difference either. Heck even if you wanted one good luck. Because the hybrids are only offered in a few states. And if Subaru didn't offer them in your state but a dealer was able to get one for you, odds are you be paying asking price and wont be able to take advantage of any incentives.
@timerney97673 жыл бұрын
17 miles electric range is the minimum with headlights and heater running, otherwise we get over 20 miles of electric range. The battery never fully drains, the system is designed to maintain a certain battery reserve to run as a hybrid and the reduction in cargo space isn't enough to make any difference to us. We're getting 60 mpg overall. We paid $35k, received $1,500 cash back from the state and a $4,000 federal tax credit which brought our net cost down to just a few hundred dollars more than a fully loaded Limited gas version. After two years we've saved more in fuel cost than the difference in price, and the regenerative braking system greatly reduces wear on the physical brakes so we'll save even more with fewer brake pad changes. We're already past the break even point in cost savings, from here on out it's all gravy.
@bubbalo33883 жыл бұрын
@@timerney9767 what do you pay per kilowatt for electricity to charge it up vs gas to go the same distance? From what I gather if I am correct I wasn't saving that much from paying for electricity vs gas prices in my area. I still wouldn't mind a PHEV with at least 50 miles all electric range still because the purpose for me to get one is so I can mainly drive on electricity and I need at least 50 miles of all electric for me. And also where I live the PHEV is not offered in my state and I couldn't take advantage of the incentives even if I were a able to get a dealer to locate one for me. Toyota offers a RAV4 PHEV now that has close to 50 miles range and more space but not sure if they offer them in my state. I gotta see if it is capable off the beaten path or just a pretender. It's either that or a gas Crosstrek. Without all the incentives these PHEV and EVs make no sense financially.
@timerney97673 жыл бұрын
@@bubbalo3388 Our electricity rates are among the lowest in the country while our gas prices are among the highest. We pay .08/kwh but gas is around $3.00/gal. for premium. Fully charging the battery costs about .50 and we average about 20 miles EV driving per charge. If we compare it to our 2001 Forester that gets around 22mpg gas costs about six times more than electricity. If we compare it to the mileage we get in our Crosstrek PHEV in hybrid mode, around 38mpg, gas costs about three times more than electricity. The 20 mile EV range covers all of our local trips but most of our non-local trips tend to cover well over 100 miles, usually through mountainous terrain. Even when the gas engine has been running it always switches to EV mode when backing into the garage, no exhaust fumes in an enclosed space equals no asthma attack when my gf gets out of the car. To her, that factor alone is worth the higher sale price regardless of incentives.

We're getting over 63 mpg in our 2019 Crosstrek PHEV with more than 13,000 miles on the odometer. It only costs us 52 cents in electricity to fully charge the battery and we average over 20 miles of EV driving per charge, that means at today's local prices for the cost of a gallon of gas we can travel over 160 miles on electricity. Not too shabby. The EPA mpg rating doesn't take real world driving with short trips on battery alone into account, but we still get close to 40 mpg with the gas engine kicking in and out in hybrid mode which is consistent with what other owners have reported. We couldn't care less about sleeping in the back, gettin' too old for that shite. But the cargo space has been more than adequate, even on long road trips with all our gear. It's pretty much the perfect vehicle for us.

Just test drove this car today and one thing anyone buying it should know is that there's a very strong wind "shuddering" sound that happens if you have the rear passenger window open while driving. It's pretty intolerable and happens even at low speeds, so you'd pretty much have to keep that window closed all the time unless you're stationary. Also if you're planning to use this car to sleep on campouts note that the surface when you fold the back seats down is not flat - the trunk storage portion is raised higher than the seats when folded down due to the electric engine, so there's a dropoff from one section to the eather. Great car other than that though.
