I have both outback and forester. Outback is heavier, wider, longer and shorter. It is these parameters that make outback more stable and comfortable. You can tell especially in windy days that forester can not handle crosswind well. If you like to travel long distance often, outback is clearly a better choice.

Have been running the '20 Forester sport for a year now, and I love it! Has gotten me across the country in all weather conditions with ease. Comfortable to drive, decent power, and I agree with the head unit usage on the Forester is great. And along with the various options you have for cargo room and storage, makes for a great all-around choice for anyone looking for an all-wheel drive reliable vehicle.

Update regarding the stop/start system: My wife and I ordered a 23 Forester Limited that we are picking up tomorrow. The dealer only had one for test driving but if you wanted one you had to order. The 23 had a simple button right on the dash for disabling the start stop system. No digging through menus on an infotainment system are needed. Also as a side note, as an older person the more simple controls and larger windows are a huge plus over the Outback. Something I didn’t care about as a younger person.

Understanding the pedal pressure is important for this feature. There's a fine line that is the difference between engaging it and not. And if it happens to disengage, you can always be better about timing your starts at traffic lights by paying attention to cross traffic.

In 2020 I bought one of each. I took the Outback and wife got the Forrester. Neither lack in daily driven power and both have proven themselves in the high level snowbelt-Northern MN. I don't like the touch screen on the new Outback and hate the start stop feature. The Outback has tons of space inside and much nicer ride plus a nice quieter ride. As for the new Turbo, now you have a moving feature that maybe troublesome.

Have watched several reviews, comparisons or straight pitches and yours is the best. Great presentation. Going to be test driving the Outback, Forester and Volvo CX60 in a couple weeks. We'll see.... My previous automobiles have been currently, the Honda Accord, then before that, the Mercury Mountaineer and before that, the Ford Bronco.(Never wanted to get rid of the Mountaineer but wife pressured me into it. Loved the Mountaineer). I want to get back into a SUV and at this stage of life, don't need the biggest so am looking at mid-size. Considering the Ford Echo primarily because it is American made. Now you know everything.

Bought an Outback and am very pleased as I like the aesthetics much better. They also revamped the infotainment and made it easier to get quick access to things like start/stop (now right at the bottom of the main screen). The added power of the turbo is nice but really not required. Despite the advertised 3mph difference between engines it is actually much more significant than that. The Forester Sport is very nice and was my second choice to thew Outback Limited.

Luckily no one was in it, and we got a lot back front when insurance because of crazy car prices. Cost of ownership was only like 2.5k for 18 months after settlement. I like luxury cars but need my car to also be a capable tool. My 2020 Subaru Outback Touring XT was a great pick for me. I'm 1 year in and could not be happier. Honestly it feels more luxury than mid level Mercedes at half the cost. And is still able to do most things you ask of it from snow to light offroad. Edit: when I say luxury I mean good looking interior... the CVT fake shifting and turbo wine feels less than awesome. But all subarus other than the WRX feel a little disappointing in the vroom vroom.

Ive had Subaru Outbacks for 20 years. They hug the road better than a Forester and they have more space, which is great for carrying ladders amd equipment. Subaru has fixed the auto stop start in US market but putting the button right on the front screen. It seem like you’re in Canada so I’m not sure if it has been fix over there. Also there isn’t much of a learning curve on the legacy/outback infotainment system at all, it’s straight forward and easy to understand, it’s like an iPad. The foresters simplicity might win the day for some but the legacy/outback has a much more expensive looking interior and loads more features if you up for the XT touring like I did. We are on our 4th subaru and presently own a 2019 forester sport. The only item I have reservations about is the cvt. It seems that what is good for japan is not good for America as they have cvt fluid change times but tell us that the cvt's fluid is lifetime. We have a 2019 Outback and just ordered the Forester. While the Outback is great it is too bouncy, windshield and ceiling feel too close, and outward visibility is not great. Base legacy at invoice is the best value in the whole lineup and the best vehicle offered by Subaru. The most versatile and dependable is the crosstrek with the manual transmission. Between the two in the video the forester is like a glass house so visibility and safety are great and therefore for most that is a better choice. It’s also made in Japan where q.c. I got the Forester because I didnt want to spend what a turbo Outback costs. And without the turbo the Outback feels more underpowered than the Forester. Is it true the Outback has a towing capacity of 3000#, compared to Foresters 1500#? This could be a selling point between the two. Does the Outback have a beefed up C.V.T? They share the same power plant in 2.5 H-4. Why the different towing capacity?

The Outback w/the 2.5L engine (non-turbo) has a 2700 lb towing capacity. The Outback XT w/the turbo has a 3500 lb towing capacity. I have an '18 Forester touring (non-turbo), and I love it, but I'm seriously mulling over switching to the '21 Outback Touring XT - towing capacity, cargo space, heated AND ventilated front seats, and the 180 front camera have pretty well snagged me. I'd go to the Ascent (5000 lb towing capacity), but it is missing some of the things I can get in the Outback Touring XT for a lower cost. If we get a tiny travel trailer, I can handle it in the Outback, if we get one a little over 5000 lbs, my husband's truck can handle that.

Okay correction: There is a start stop engine icon right on the touch screen, turn the car on hit the icon Start /Stop feature is disengaged. But I do think it's new for 2021. I just purchased the Outback XT limited and he correct about the infotainment system it's a bit daunting at first but after two weeks I have zero issues other than it could use more RAM it's a tad slow at times. I drove both and wanted more space so the Outback XT was the one for me and that Turbo supplies more power than I need. Side note and this is no lie I have a 2014 Avalon Premium I traded in and the Outback absolutely drives better on the highway.

I am struggling between the two models, love the big windows, panoramic moon roof and physical knobs and dual mode at a lower cost. However, I prefer the look of the outback, more storage, and how it drives. And isn't the drive half the battle in purchasing a car (despite it is extremely more costly to get the moon/roof and leather compared to a fully loaded forester. The long distance trip is really one of my concerns which I have not been able to find a review or comparison on how the forester drives long distance. Obviously, weight and towing become an issue on both and the reaction of engine....

I like the Outback at first too.. No way now.. The Forester is designed wheels deferential and size to haul a larger load then the Outback.. It's maybe the same engine but it's the design and strength of the body to move something.. Honestly Turbo has nothing to do with it.. Strength integrity in the body tows stuff. Do I want to tow with either of them... I rather have a v6.. then a 4.. The Forester I have will tow better then any v6 out there.. It's all about the design.. Honestly ..2 really great looking vehicles.. Towing ..no Question.. Forester.. I'm a male... My Foresters a women.. I hook nothing up to her with out asking after making love to her first.. The reason the CVT isn’t reliable in the US is because Subaru America doesn’t have fluid changes listed as routine maintenance. Everywhere else has them serviced in 60k km intervals. The reason is Subaru America just needs them to go until the warranty expires. If you take care of the CVT as anyone with a brain would do, it’ll go for 150-200k miles.
@carhelpcorner

Many conventional transmissions come with "lifetime" fluid which I don't agree with either. Even so, I haven't seen evidence that periodic fluid changes extend the life of CVTs. I think some have inherent design flaws which exist regardless of whether you change the fluid or not.

@@SargontheGreat77 The logic behind your perception of a personal insult isn't my problem. Lighten up... and get your testosterone levels checked, Baby Diapers. Personally, I take insult from people that profit off their lies. If you like that sort of thing, go nuts... but taking issue with and directing spite at an organized fraud (lifetime fluids) that is a concerted effort of automakers to keep people making purchases they don't actually need to make isn't being a jerk. Same goes with rebutting an auto industry shill. Car Care Corner isn't a mechanic- he's a buyer and "consultant." Car Care Corner benefits by siding with automakers because he depends on them to supply vehicles for his reviews. Is it possible YOU'RE Car Care Corner and replied under the wrong KZfaq account? Maybe that's why you took issue with my comment when a normal and well-adjusted uninterested party would see it for what it was intended: a rebuttal against an obvious collusion and conspiracy among automakers to force unplanned purchases on a planned and predictable schedule. That's what "lifetime fluids" represent. It's a simple fact that changing fluid, regardless of type, is a necessary component of maintenance, safety, and preserving the lifetimes of major systems. ALL mechanics agree with this, or at least ones that are worth listening to. The evidence for increased longevity of CVTs (even with the garbage Nissan makes) with regular fluid changes is out there. Pointing that out and rebutting an anonymous party that holds a conflicting interest of personal profit by defending the organized deception of "lifetime fluids" is not being a jerk. If you choose to side with an automaker (who has the direct benefit of planned obsolescence) or one of their shills (above), that's your liability. That sort of thing, like your aggressive need to take insult where only your own liabilities of gullibility, negligence, ignorance, and/or conflicting interests would justify it is also not my problem. Me thinking you're a sad gullible willing victim of collusion, conspiracy and fraud does not make me a jerk. Me suspecting "Daniel Seif" is "Car Care Corner" and considering your overly estrogenized reaction to my comment does not make me a jerk. I'm very good at being a jerk. I know when I'm being a jerk. For instance: it's been my intention to be a complete jerk this entire time to YOU for taking umbrage with my relatively benign comment towards a "consultant" that has a direct benefit from siding with and spreading the deceptions of his potential clients. I've made this decision to commit to being a jerk because of my suspicion that "Daniel Seif" and "Car Care Corner" are one in the same, which would make you a deceptive POS in my opinion. If I'm wrong, by all means, stand in line with your hard-earned money and get ripped off every 100-150k miles... or significantly less in some instances. In the situation my suspicion regarding your identity is incorrect, I'm not sorry I've been a jerk this entire time as I don't see an issue with speaking in an aggressively poor manner towards a gullible overly-sensitive boo-hoo baby. Rub some dirt on your overly sensitive feelings and go cry your overly sensitive baby alligator tears to someone else, Alice. Life is hard.
