Hi 👋 I'm a driving instructor and I chose this exact model for my tuition car (my second, I had a 1.0 Powerboost before). Very very reliable. Mine is 2 years old, almost 60,000 miles and not one issue. I also get 58 mpg with the car doing mainly urban work with the learner drivers, amazing really. Other good stuff - stylish interior, very responsive steering, powerful brakes, easy accurate gearbox, good visibility, high equipment level especially the adaptive cruise control and multi function steering wheel.. The car also has the most amazing LED headlights which are automatic as well. Plastics are hard but that suits me as easy to clean. For me, the only real issue is the car does crash over any road surface imperfections. An other issue is the collision alert is too sensitive, I actually turn mine off. Anyway, a fantastic car, I will buy another, possibly the Sport which will be fun for me when used out of lessons but I am also considering waiting for the new model which could be available next year sometime.

Yep, Suzuki have improved the Swift hugely since the original car was launched. Good to drive and relatively guilt free in terms of fuel consumption. What's not to like?

Drove a 1.0 Boosterjet (non-hybrid) recently and I thought it was the best new car I've driven for a long time. Great sound, great handling, good power, lovely interior and tons of space. Even the engine bay was spacious and logically laid out. Wonderful little thing.

Pleased to see this, Matt! I’m more than pleased with my ‘17 plate SZ5 1.0 litre hybrid. Nippy, fun to drive (very similar to the R53/R56 Mini) and great fuel economy. It always pains me that some reviewers always harp on about how hard or soft the dash and door trim is.. You don’t drive around fondling the dash or the door trims, ffs! Great review of a cracking little car. Nice one, Matt!

The 1.0 3 cyl Boosterjet Hybrid with Turbo is like lightening compared to the 1.2 Dualjet it's so much quicker. Suzuki stopped putting the 1.0 Boosterjet into the Swift stuck in the older slower 1.2 Dualjet to save money. A retrograde step by Suzuki. Boosterjet a much better engine. The Sport has 1.4 Boosterjet in it still.

The Swift goes back close to 40 years, used as badge engineered vehicles for GM until they set up on their own. I like this a lot with the exception of front electric windows which says "cost cutting". The styling dictates a rear camera, which I really find handy on modern cars. I also like those up high rear door handles to discourage children getting in without adult supervision. I do love rear stadium seating; like have a clear all round view! Great review!

Having recently bought a new 2021 Suzuki Swift SZ5 1.2 Hybrid I have to say I am amazed. My last car was also a Swift, a 2010 1.3 SZ3. I live in West London and averaged 34 MPG in my old car, in this one it is averaging 44 MPG. It is also nippier, roomier and far more advanced with an amazing number of both safety and comfort features included as standard, I would definitely recommend...!!!

RIght on the money - mine 2021 Suzuki Swift SZ5 1.2 Hybrid averages 46 MPG - passed 4000 km in a year and I love this car . Nothing to improve (except power of coarse but for a city car its plenty enough - also more power means higher fuel consumption) Even on a open road it goes 170 kmh I just adore it 😍

My wife has recently swapped her 15 reg Celerio for a Fiat 500. Personally I preferred the Celerio…it was much more economical, faster and generally more fun to drive…it also never let me down or missed a beat in 3 years.The 500 is ok just much too small and slow for me…I can’t get comfortable in it. Will definitely be looking at this Swift when we swap again.

It hurts to not have this available in the USA...land of leviathan SUV and pickup truck vehicles. Got to travel around Wales, Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall in one, and just a sweet little car. No larger than it needs to be, which I love. The first generation Swift was sold here in the early 1990s (alongside the Chevrolet and later GEO Metro), but these were rather anemic. Reliable and fun are my buzzwords for an ideal everyday runabout car, and I have to wait until 2042 when the "25 year rule" would allow me to import a 2017 model year from this generation into the USA. Thanks for profiling this, FD! Love to see the unique, "average" vehicles used on UK roads and unavailable in the USA. I'm a fish out of water here because I'm like you....not a fan of the SUV or pickup except vehicles that are exceptionally good at their intended practical purpose, like the first gen Range Rover you drove a while back.

In January last year, having written off my cherished Grande Punto Eleganza, and needing a car in a hurry; I ended up with a 2011 Swift SZ4, and I have to be honest, I've properly fallen for it. I'm not a speed freak, but it goes like an absolute rocket, and the supercharger like sound when the VVT kicks in is rather a giggle, lol! It looks superb, (especially the 3 door which I have,) is excellent to drive, and is easily capable of 50+ mpg on longer journeys. I'll always miss my lovely old Fiat, but I certainly ended up with a worthy replacement for it!

DualJet, not BoosterJet, thats the turbo. Thats more like it. A really enjoyable modern car, I miss my SZ-L - even if it did throw an engine light and go in to limp mode at a couple of days old/200 miles on the clock. Tip: Want satnav in this car? Buy the SD card with map data (original Suzuki spare part) on the well known marketplaces. It costs about 30 £. Just push it into the top slot of the entertainment system -- voilà you got satnav, no installation needed! I test drove the 1L 3 cylinder, a much better engine with 110hp and much more useable. You can still get up to 60mpg out of it , and it had start stop. So… I went out and bought a 1.4 Sport instead. Pocket rocket, feels faster than 140hp because the car weighs less than 1000kg. And I still get over 50mpg out of it. It does have some oddities, it’s very mechanical. I have not heard some of those noises since my 1966 MG1100. The first thing I did was to switch off the Lane departure warning as it was always flashing. In many ways it reminds me of a R56 Mini. Sorry ,Matt, heated seats are not available in the UK market for any trim level (or on any Suzuki except the S Cross). My sensible car is a Suzuki Baleno, 10cm longer than the Swift but with a 320L boot.

My last 2 cars have been Swifts - currently the last version Sport. I've loved them both - very sweet handling and lovely to drive. Totally reliable as well. Only snag is that even the 1.6 Sport engine lacks torque. If you want to go fast, you have to really thrash it, which is a bit irritating. As for the new one, I think the instruments look cheap, and the 1.2 engine doesn't have enough performance, though I guess the hybrid engine might help driveability. Initially there was a 3 cylinder turbo engine which sounded much more fun (if you didn't want the Sport), but that's no longer available, presumably due to emissions regulations. So, whilst I'm sure the new Swift is as great a car as the old versions, without a better engine, its not for me.

I own a swift NZ 1,2 (2015) and i tried the new one with the same 90 hp engine. You can definitely feel the 120 kg weight reduction it´s quite nippy and goes well on a twisted road, of course not a racecar but you can have fun in it and don´t break the speed limit all the time.

Those EU WLTP rules are very strict, and it is rather ironic that if you produce lots of big, heavy guzzling cars (like say Mercedes), you are given a much more generous emissions allowance than a company like Suzuki which only produces small, economy cars!

It would be like saying the new Koenigsegg Gemera is saving the planet with it's 3cyl hybrid, despite the fact it makes 1700bhp.
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
I will give an example: The "hybrid" battery in this car is the size if a fist, and has the capacity of a starter battery for a smaller motorcycle. It contains 0.12kwh of energy if fully depleted, or about 1/500th of a medium priced electric car. The "hybrid" motor gives all of 3hp, and it can be ran at full tilt for 3 minutes before the battery is totally empty. Bottom line: The system does effectively nothing, except maybe gives it compliance with hybrid rules. Suzuki themselves say the system gives "Up to" 5% benefit. On a positive note, it also costs the manufacturer next to nothing, I would guess about £100 or so at the most.
@Mgoblagulkablong
@Mgoblagulkablong 2 жыл бұрын
This has absolutely nothing to do with Suzuki, literally every manufacturer does this. Also in city driving it makes a significant difference, much smoother and quicker engine start&stop. Btw the Swift Sport with the 1.4 T engine has a 48V system.
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mgoblagulkablong Didnt see anyone say it was exclusively suzuki who does it? In any case, yes drivability might be a bit better, but consumption benefits of this 12v system are as good as nil, effectively. Dont know about the 48v system, it might be much better, I was going off the specs quoted for this car. Nevertheless, since it is so cheap (for the manufacturer), small and light, why not? As long as one understands what one gets..

Good review. As a Honda jazz (Honda Fit) owner, I would have to ask….. I assume electric rear windows are an option, next model up. Some nice design touches but shame no flat load bay like mine. Also, as with Honda those single action seat recliner handles are imo completely a pain. A twist dial is much better. This car looks a bit smaller than the Honda? The Honda has a similar volume control on the touchscreen but also has controls on the steering wheel….does the Suzuki have this? Touchscreen vol control is rubbish! Does a mild hybrid make enough difference on economy to warrant having it? (Extra cost). Parking front & back sensors + rear backup camera? Engine idle stop? City brake? Must be automatic.

It's cool. But it makes since we dont have this or even the entire brand in USA and Canada anymore. This is too "cute" for our tastes and dosnt have the heritage like a mini. But the biggest thing is it's far to small and looks unsafe and is just automatically super uncool by most standards. Interesting how tastes vary across the globe. I dont have the confidence to avoid the social stigma to drive this so while I like it but I wouldn't be caught dead in one lol.

Not convinced on this one, it appears to be a cheap car trying to look expensive. But is £15k cheap for a slow, outdated, basic and plasticky compact with rear drum brakes? This Suzuki is a very expensive Dacia Sandero IMHO.
@GoldenCroc

Agree on most everything, but I would rather have drum brakes in a car such as this. Works better for most people, at least where I live.

@@GoldenCroc - thanks, I’m interested to know why you prefer rear Drum brakes over discs?
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
@@xjsteve Generally people dont put enough energy through the rear brakes to keep them operating properly. They both seize up and rust from lack of enough use. Seized rear brakes is one of the top reasons for MOT failure here. A drum is better protected from the elements, and therefore is less susceptible to such problems. The braking effect is also enough for most everyone that drives reasonably sensible, especially in small/light cars. Thats why I prefer drums in the rear for normal usage.

Why? You guys from down under neighbours TAKE this metric vs Imperial arguments so seriously? I mean as myself Malaysian, should be bother by this miles, lbs-ft of imperial unit usage, does effect my life badly? Common... Hey, google some unit conversion and you got your answer in metric.. This gentleman is from UK and main audiences are also from UK. Don't just downgrade what they been using for ages... Before I forget, for metric I can say kW rate for internal combustion engine is comically low number, so my country use ps [pfersdafke] as standard . Because as close to BHP.. Ok, maybe this what the FIRST WORLD PROBLEM term exist....my bad for interrupting...

Suzuki has a problem outside of Japan and India... The Hungarian made cars are horrible in quality... Had a back then brand new 2018 S-Cross 1.4 TJ with 140BHP and an auto trans... The engine was nice, and it was very quick (for an auto)... But as far as the rest of it goes... Oh dear... So badly made, such a rigid ride, the entire car felt like it was designed somewhere in the 00's... At around 1.5k of KM sound proofing material started coming out of the dash near the windshield... At around 2k the drivers door panel started to come off... At around 7k the steering column plastic started to come loose and rattle... From new, the brakes were efficient but oh so noisy... The entire ride in it was so noisy and so... Just uncomfortable... The car was very low on toys for a 2018 model... This Swift seems to have sort of the same design issues... Outside that's not a bad look though somewhat outdated, but from the inside... IDK... Again looks like something from about a decade ago... And also kinda very low on modern 20's toys... Wouldn't be an issue but the quality of those outside Japan Suzuki cars is just bad usually...

We have a plethora of Suzukis running on our streets. Most of them were assembled in Esztergom. Generally I can say that I'd rather get a locally assembled Suzuki than any German or Japanese or European car. It may not be remarkable, it may be faulty (well... statistically it can be the rotten one in the bunch), but I would not call Suzukis of the new age that horrific. My colleague has been driving an old sedan Swift. It was puritan. Being a 'Manager' it still was an econobox. BUT; it managed 16 years with no major faults. He swapped it to a Vitara around 2015. It was a rolling, tech-savvy tank.

Maybe for you its a patriotic thing but oh come on... Those cars just don't feel quite put together... Its all squeaky and rattly right from the beginning... Not to mention the weird oil consumption issue with the 1.4 engine... After i got rid of mine, i've got myself a 2020 Chevy Equinox... Man what a difference... BTW, i got to both drive and ride in the old SX4s both made in Japan and in Hungary... Two completely different cars...
