I bought this Asvine P20 piston filler thinking it was a piston-filling version of the Leonardo Momento Zero or the Moonman M800. But I was mistaken, as it looks more like a Narwhal Schuylkill! I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. Writes extremely well right out of the box, no tweaking needed. Nobody EVER says that about a Visconti, despite it costing 20 times or more than the Asvine P20.

That was a really good catch in that it’s more similar to the Nahvalur Schuylkill than the Leonardo MZ. Great video, Doug.

@@InkquiringMinds I believe asvine is the parent company for Hongdian and Moonman They might even do some cooperation with narwahl, given how well those 3 nibs are interchangeable.

Doug, another wonderful review. I received my purple P20 about a week ago and agree with everything you noted in your review, with one exception. It may be that I got extremely lucky but the pen I received has almost no bright red. Instead it has some rusty orange with purple, blue portions of wonderful shimmer with depth and chatauency. I chose the fine nib and feel the line is very nearly the same width as the fine nib on my Pelikan 800. Posting is not a deal breaker for me but if it did like my moonman m800 or Leonardo momento zero it would be absolute perfection. Again thanks for the video!!

Thanks for this one Doug. I initially passed this review .... I suppose due to the absurd name of the brand but I am glad I found it and watched. Since receiving the M800, I have fallen in love with writing with it. It just belongs in my hand. The C/C is the only bummer for me. It isn't horrific but isn't my preference. I wish Leonardo had a piston or a vacuum fill built in. Still I love the M800 and because of that the MZG 2.0 is my new grail pen. Then here comes this pen! Well, how could I hold myself back :) Keep it up Doug. Thank you.

An excellent review! I am surprised that the Nahvalur and the Asvine are nearly identical. I am glad you mentioned that the Wing Sung wrench can be used for both pens. I have the Dragonet Sapphire also and always wondered how to maintain the piston. The Asvine may take a Jowo nib, then, if the manufacturer is the same as the Nahvalur. That the Asvine does reverse writing very well is a definite plus. I have been noticing that the smoothness of the nib can be dependent on the ink used. Again, great review, Doug. The Asvine is certainly worth consideration. Will add it to my list.

Nahvalur has said they make their own nibs in-house. There is plenty of cap clearance in the Asvine for nib swapping with a #6 Jowo.

@@InkquiringMinds I broke down and just ordered your pen from Sally. I swore I wouldn't buy another pen until next year but this pen is stunning. I do buy Nahvalur pens from goldspot as they were one of the first retailers to offer their pens. Prices are reasonable but if Asvine (maybe esybuy?) is producing similar quality pens, I may have to reconsider Asvine as an option.

The Moonman is only available in the typical boring F nib. For me, a deal breaker. Great review.

I bought some days ago a P20 in a different color: marble blue resin. It is gorgeous! The texture of the resin is very similar to the Esterbrook Estie Petrified Forest that I also received recently, but costs about 5 times! Both nibs. And out of the box the P20 writes better than the Estie!

My cap posts on the barrel not the knob, and my knob is not loose. I have the colorway you’ve reviewed, the green on order from China, and just purchased the plainer aqua pen on Amazon with one day shipping. I find the threads sharper than my Leonardos and do think the acrylic feels like Narwhal, but it feels much more like a Leonardo in my hand due to the section geometry.

We have similar taste in pens. I also have the Momento Zero and Pelikan M800 at the top of my list. I don't even want any other expensive pens besides one of those two haha. But I'm definitely getting a P20.

Try "Endless Alchemy Candy Sea" ink. It's very comparable and comes in 60ml erlenmeyer flask. I use it a lot.

I mostly agree with your review, Doug. Posting is an issue, but what I have found are sample variations with the acrylic. The first one I ordered had this striped effect in the acrylic - light bands that went down vertically along the barrel. The second one did not. Otherwise this is a really pleasing pen, but not at the same level as the Moonman 800. The Narwhal is an excellent comparison.

Thanks, Stefan. Most acrylics will have variations and each pen will be unique. I'm not all that impressed by the quality of the acrylic in either the Asvine or the Narwhal. Where Penbbs and Moonman rival Leonardo in acrylic quality.

@@InkquiringMinds Yes, I agree on that point. The Narwhals i have are nice, but I think those and this Asvine model could have been better had they used majohn like acrylics.

Excellent review of an excellent, inexpensive fountain pen - the Asvine P20. My Asvine P20 in Galaxy just arrived. Got a nib although I usually get , took a punt on something different. It writes exceptionally well out of the box (well out of the bubble wrap), but must say, I still prefer . So I could buy a pack of 3 Nib/feeds to fit the P20 for $30 or buy a new pen with nib for $40 (ie. you get the pen for $10). That's my (slightly errant) logic anyway, so just ordered the Amber version with nib. It's a very, very slippery slope. FWIW, I've seen your reviews of the P30 and P50 and, for whatever reason, they do not reach out to me like the P20 does so at least I'm not humming and harring about buying either of those.

@@InkquiringMinds Quick update: The Asvine P20 Medium arrived yesterday. IMHO the Medium is a far nicer writer than the Fine. There is little to differentiate the two looking at line widths with the naked eye, but the medium is definitely smoother with a hint of feedback and puts down (again IMHO) noticeably more ink (yes I know it's a Medium) that I also cannot get to tramline even with some pressure. I will use the Fine when I need a marginally Finer line, but I can see the Amber Medium being a go to pen.

It should be. There is plenty of cap clearance. Just now I was able to fit a Kaigelu Long Blade nib with no problem.

@inkquiringminds Sorry to be a PITA Doug, but I have been trying to find a stub nib to try out. Nothing here in OZ and I cannot seem to find anything that might fit the pens I have on AliX, but I believe that the Narwhal nib/feeds will fit the Asvine P20. I don't want to buy another pen just for the nib (been there/done that), but I'd like to give the stub a go if it fits (I can buy one in the US (they are like US$20 incl CONUS postage) and have a friend send it over). Can you provide any advice as to compatibility?

I have some top tier fountain pens, but I find myself drawn to the inexpensive ones more these days. I like that I can try a lot of different ones for cheap, more bang for the buck in the hobby.

Nice one, the Moonman M800 with a Bock nib (put a medium cursive italic in there) is still one of my favorites, both ergonomically and as in how it writes. I got the grind from fpnibs and Pablo did a fantastic job on this one (ask for a smooth cursive italic). Do you think this would fit a Jowo BF or bock nib? The nib looks substantially smaller than the Leonardo (which is a Jowo in that one I think?).

There is plenty of cap clearance on the Asvine, so I expect it would accept a #6 Jowo.

The Asvine P20 is a great bargain, and it writes quite well, though I agree that the acrylic does not have the depth and beauty of the Leonardo (others have disagreed with me; next to my Leonardo pruna, though, the Asvine just doesn't look as lovely).

Hi sir, understand that the Kaigelu long blade nibs fits perfectly only in Jinhao 100 centennial you own than any other pen like Asvine p20, Majohn p136, Moonman M800? I tried Hongdian N23 long blade nib in my Asvine P20 but the nib did not went well/completely into the nib collar while the feed can slide up and down... Does it matter anyways in terms of writing performance or in terms of any wear and tear involved?

The Kaigelu long blade will not fit in the MaJohn P136. I don’t know about the N23 but certainly in the others you mention. If the nib slides around in the N23 it might not have good ink flow as it has to contact the feed completely.

Bonza in depth review. Grail pen a Pelikan M1000? You may have started a range war between Narwhal and Asvine. The P20 looks like it’s a goer,other reviews of the V169 -vacuum filler indicate it wasn’t as it some issues that could lead to a messy end. Bravo review 🎉

@@InkquiringMinds A grail pen comparison suggestion M1000 Fine and a Pilot 912 Flex friendly nib. I’m told the one in the Falcon is not unless you add an ebonite feed to avoid rail roading. I have a soft spot( on the right setting) for the Justus 95. I’m not crazy on pens with beautiful chatoyance, more pens with presence/nibs that add character to your writing ( e.g. architects,obliques,stubs,fude). It’s taken a long time, trial and error to get to this point. Also piston filler pens and eyedroppers over converters. The Con 70 is my favourite pit stop converter. Pilot music nib is a honey 🍯.

Hi, beautiful pen, but i h ave read some reviews on amazon, many people are disappointing by the pen leaking ink to the cap and some people say leaking through the piston knob. Do you have any of these problems?

Yes, but you have to use the Asvine feed and collar.

My cap does go past the piston, but it's not super straight. It won't fall off unless you are planning to use the pen as a sword but it is a bit of a wand. I wish the cap band reached the, and this is a new word I just learned, purlicue of my hand (where your thumb and index finger meet).

Get the pen down into the ink to the section. The filler opening is right at the section.

It’s a wonderful ripoff of the Moonman M800, which is a wonderful ripoff of the Momento Zero, which is a wonderful ripoff of the OMAS Extra, which is a wonderful ripoff of the Wahl Eversharp Doric… 😂 I should add that I have two of these Asvines. One came with a broken filler twist cap. The other came in good working order and required no tweaking to work well. Still putting it through its paces though.

I am confused. You say medium nib and 0.5mm and on site they say medium 0.7mm what is correct;

Different manufacturers will label a 0.5mm nib as different things. In the east it is a medium, in the west it is a fine.

@@InkquiringMinds silly me - went to the Nahvalur site - appears that the Schuylkill is just a fancy Original - same weight and 1 or 2 mm difference here or there - I would assume the same piston - and if the Asvine P20 is almost the same as a Schuylkill but at half the price of that or an Original.....I think I know what I'll be ordering - hello Asvine P20! my first piston filler!!!

They sure take care when shipping your pens. I NEVER get that much wrap or protection. I wonder if they do that for you cause they know you review them
