Finally got to test this beast off road! It's interesting because it's not as smooth as other off-roaders like the Tacoma TRD Pro. However it never has hard bumps or hits when it reaches it's limits.
Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.
New videos every Friday at 6:30 A.M. MST and occasionally on Wednesdays.

Great review. I completely agree with everything you said. The front/rear lockers are great to have, and the shocks do a great job on/off road. I drove all the mid-size trucks and while I wouldn't say there is a "best", the ZR2 was the best to me so I picked up one. I love it.

Thanks for the support! That's an excellent point. I get asked all the time what the best truck or car is, I always say it's personal preference and what I like/need may not be what someone else likes/needs.

Thanks for sharing! From the people I've talked to, most of them love their ZR2s. The engine isn't a bad engine by any means, it's very reliable. It just isn't smooth by modern standards.

Thanks for watching and for the support! Hopefully I can keep this up, I've been extra busy for about a year now and had to slow down on KZfaq. I've got a few vehicles filmed already, but the order should be Tahoe Z71, Chevy Blazer RS (again), Chevy Traverse RS, with a BMW M2.40i in there somewhere. The Tahoe is the only one of those with 2 separate videos, but I do take the Blazer and Traverse off-pavement to attempt the steep hill climb. After those I'm hoping for a fun truck that will include the normal review, a towing and empty MPG video, and the off-road video.

Great video! , Much better than the usual walk around and street test ride. Just picked mine up last week , I got the v6 , same color. Theses are being discounted by some dealers because the new model is coming out in the fall. Mine has the Bose and nav upgrade and I got it for 41g. So far I’ve only had it on some easyish trails , a little soft sand and it doesn’t break a sweat. I think I actually heard it laughing 😄

@EngineAdventures

Thanks for watching! I haven't driven beach sand, and I don't worry about drive modes too much, but I would think Baja for sand. If you're near the shore 4wd high, if you're climbing steep hills 4wd low.

Thanks for the video the best one so far! Question, seen several videos where it was in 4lo and both front and rear locked with lots of wheel spinning at all 4 wheels. I thought once over 35mph the front locker would disengage. Is that true? My 2022 Colorado ZR2 is still in transit to the dealership.
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures Жыл бұрын
I don't know the answer to that, but generally if you're going that fast you don't need the front locker anyway. I didn't test that specifically, my high speed testing is done without engaging the lockers.

Man this is like one of the best trucks you've ever tested. Pretty crazy. Would definitely beat my Cherokee Trailhawk. That really says something. Wranglers can beat a Cherokee Trailhawk all day long but it's pretty tough to beat. That Chevy would kill me, especially if it's lifted enough to get all the angles. I'm about 35, 28 and 40 with a 2 inch lift on approach, breakover and departure, respectively.

How do I compare these shocks to the raptor or Trd pro or ram trx
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
They are all different, the TRX and Raptor have way more travel and are smoother off-road. On road they are a bit soft. The TRD Pro is softer off-road, but they bottom/top out harder than the ZR2 and are too soft on-road. The ZR2 was a different experience for me as it's stiff enough for on-road and stiff off-road but never harsh. The ZR2 probably has the best on road.

I’ve got the ‘19 ZR2 diesel and I’ve pulled out several Tacoma’s up in the Hill Country out here in TX. However, they had inexperienced drivers. I’ve yet to pull out another ZR2 and several of my neighbors have them. Mines got the Peak Suspension 4” lift with King Racing shocks and 33” Falkens. And it’s deleted/tuned. I bought it pre-owned with all the mods minus the delete. I did that almost immediately after I bought it b/c the 2.8 is notorious for having issues with the DPF system. I had the same problem and the dealership had to replace the entire system ($2800 but I had the warranty 🙏🏼) but I deleted it the following week cause I got tired of the check engine light coming on intermittently.

Haha thanks! Just imagine how many takes there are and how many mistakes are made, if that's all that makes it through I'm pretty happy! The only 3.6 V8 that comes to mind is a Land Rover diesel engine, but my guess is Ferrari had one too, they like tiny pistons that have a short stroke and rev really high.

Which was better at high speed off road, ZR2 or Tacoma TRD Pro?
@EngineAdventures

I went a little faster in the ZR2, but the Tacoma is certainly smoother until it reaches its limits. Now that I've had more experience it would be good to test another Tacoma TRD Pro to see how it compares.

That inset shot of the wheel travel says it all. The dampers are tuned well - GM did their homework on this one. I was amazed at the Toco test, and I find this one even more amazing.
@sking2173
@sking2173 2 жыл бұрын
@@EngineAdventures - The forward-facing camera you use for the road test works so well at stabilizing the image that it belies the true pounding that truck is taking. I have to make myself take my eyes off the road and scenery and concentrate on the movement of the interior of the truck to get a true “feel” of the experience.
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I might have pushed this truck harder than any other before it, but it handled it. I remember going about this same speed in the TRX. It was much smoother, but because of the weight of it and the wheel travel I touched the front skid plate a couple of times and slowed down for fear of hitting something too hard. The ZR2 was much more rough, but I never felt like I was pushing it too hard. Probably could have gone faster if I wasn't afraid of hurting someone else's truck.

This truck is tits. My ‘19 2.8L is just awesome and it goes through crap that my brothers 3/4 ton 4x4 can’t make it through. I’ve had to pull him and his friends out of mud yet I’ve never been stuck. The night I purchased my truck I heard 4 people in the dealership talking about the poor engine choice. 4 people, in around three hours. If someone wants a four cylinder let them get a Ford escape. I understand it's a turbo but still. It's even worse that they come in the Silverados too. No one wants that besides maybe the city folk who think they are saving tons of gas money.
