Buy whatever pleases you, Chevy had plenty of years to scope out their competition (Tacoma) and knew they had to better their truck so people like you can say oh Chevy has better this that so I'm going to buy that Chevy instead, Toyota does not care, because they have better cars then this Chevy just that it's not available to the US market, Now just imagine if Toyota was to bring their Turbo Diesel engine into the US market, the big 3 would cry their eye balls out. Toyota is not #1 for no reason...

@@Dan007UT When I bought the Tacoma I was living in So Cal, and it was perfect for the weather and terrain. I moved to Colorado in mid 2019 and quickly found that the Taco was a little iffy when driving in snowy and icy conditions especially as I was constantly slipping and sliding, even with 4x4 engaged. I had some aggressive all terrain tires, so I know it wasn’t that. Anyhow, because of this I started looking into heavier duty and more robust vehicles such as the Ford Raptor. Found one that I liked and was about to pull the trigger, but something kept telling me to give the ZR2 a try, so I did. The ZR2 was every bit as capable as the Raptor (in a much smaller package) which meant cheaper cost, greater ease of parking and trail running. Sure the interior isn’t as refined as the Raptor’s but it works for me and does excellent in snow, ice, mud, hard compact dirt, loose dirt etc. Being able to turn the traction control off, and setting it to off road mode really opens her up, and that was definitely something that couldn’t be done in the Toyota! The Tacoma was more akin to driving a car with a bed. The ZR2 feels as solid as a tank, and drives like a truck. Overall the ZR2 is just much more robust in all respects, and it’s no wonder it’s referred to as the baby Raptor!

Just be sure to add the rear shock mount skid plates for the ZR2....they hang down waaay past the differential. Toyota needs to resolve the seating position issue with the Tacoma. There just isn't any headroom if you are over 5'10". The ZR2 looks kinda weird to me....just too angular for me. Reminds me the Pontiac Aztec from the front. Oh, Sam in the future, take the extra keys or whatever that was, out of the key ring. On the ZR2 hillclimb all I could hear was the click-clack of those extra keys knocking around.

billy mc I agree with all of this which is why I recently got a 2020 Quicksand Tacoma TRD Off Road with adjustable driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay and keyless entry on the passenger’s side too now! I am very happy with my choice. The the ZR2 has certain advantages, but I just don’t like the body lines, god awful instrument cluster and shifter. Plus those low hanging rear shock mounts are unacceptable in an off-roader. Oh yea wax coated frames just seem ridiculous on a vehicle to me. I just got out of my 3 year Silverado lease and downsized to the Taco, because it is fun to drive!

Nice comparison review! I agree on the Chevy choice and I’m a Toyota owner. I had a 15 Tacoma and it did have some issues so the reliability thing isn’t a valid argument. That’s why I traded for a full size Chevrolet. They just offer more. Still love my 4Runner but Chevy over takes the Tacoma in mid size off roaders.

Also your anecdotal evidence isn’t what invalidates an argument. Toyota’s can say they have been more reliable because In the JD power reliability studies since before 2000, have always had their truck in the top 5. Where’s as many times dodge and Chevy are at the bottom. I drive a Colorado, but you seem like you just want to validate what you own. When the Silverado will never be able to go as many place as the Zr2 or a 4Runner/Tacoma.

I agree. The Tacoma is a damn handsome truck IMHO. Love the body lines compared to the ZR2. Plus, the expensive shocks in the rear hang lower than the differential. Always see them hit rocks while off roading. Have to at least get the armor to protect them. But the ZR2 too is much quicker however, the 8 speed gear box isn’t the best. Im not rich and want a truck to last a long time with no problems. Toyota Taco for me. Im not buying an expensive truck to destroy offload, but a truck that can get my smaller, cheaper more capeable offload toys in a little ways. then destroy the quads, dirt bikes and sleds lol. However, Toyota should just stick a damn front locker in there and maybe better shocks then compete with the zr2 comparison of the gearing in both high and low would be good lower gearing can replace torque deficit. They all need better ground clearance lol. Dura traks are pretty good ATs with a good winter rating and good mud performance, cheap to replace too. noisy though. I like the kevlar tire idea on the taco cause you can air down your tire and it will survive sharp crap better. just need better AT tread.

If you actually knew anything about this topic you would know that the frame actually has zero issue under payload or for towing. The issue you are referring to has happened to ZR2's towing trailers offroad that exceeded the maximum value of what they should have been towing in terms of tongue weight. The issue was not the towing capacity which is rated at 5000lbs but the tongue weight exceeded what it should have, which when hitting a large bump at too high a speed, caused the frame to bend. This isn't even a design flaw. The frame is designed to bend that way in order to prevent the force from kicking the truck up under the rear axels which would cause the truck to literally go heels over head and flip. Any time you exert a force of that nature it has go go somewhere, SO you have a choice, flip the truck rear end over front or at least pop it up in the air majorly or the frame bends. If you look it up this has actually happened to multiple raptors and Tacomas as well. Your argument is flawed as is your logic and your knowledge base in this topic. Do a quick google search next time and read a bit before making dumb comments.

I have been hoping Ford and Chevy would "take over" the little truck market....so I could pickup a nice late model Toyota Tacoma for 10 cents on the dollar 😁

One intangible i see is reliability and durability. Having owned a GMC in the Past and now a Tacoma TRD sport...My Toyota truck absolutely destroys GM in quality and reliability. GM may have edged out the Toyota but see how well they do in 5,6,7 or 8 years. I am sure Toyota will.destroy any competitor in a blink. My Tacoma already 150 000 kms on it and only major repairs are one front hub/bearing and rear springs. Rear springs are a bit wimpy from the factory and disc brakes could be a bit more robust. I use high performance pads and rotors and works well.

@@2011buddylee I have met so many people who have switched to Toyota. I remember a while back meeting a guy with a new Tundra. I asked him how he liked the Tundra. He told me it was great. I asked him if he owned any other trucks...told me had just gotten rid of his new Silverado for the Tundra. He said when he had to go back a 3rd time for same warranty issue...he said you can keep this crap. I would say for every 10 who love Toyota...maybe the 11th has a negative experience. I have met many people with different models of Toyota with 400 000, 500 000 kms on then. The brand builds cars like nobody else. I would say Honda is not far behind either.

After one too many horrible experiences with my GM purchases, I will never touch one again - unless it's an old classic back when they made some good cars and trucks. The Chevy ZR2 is simply a feature set. And I happen to think it looks boyish and overdone. If you want to upgrade the suspension of a Tacoma, the aftermarket is rich with options.

This generation ZR2 and diesel are too new to know what the resale is going to be like. Rest assured when you add up a few rack and pinions the Toyota is going to need over it's life time it will deffinently cut into any resale advantage. I put more rack and pinions in toyotas than all other brands combined.....

Gave up on Toyotas. They are reliable but so bland. I prefer a more interesting car over reliability. Hopefully Toyota can put out more interesting products or I'm not buying from them.
