The 2.7L is actually a very heavily built motor. Four bolt mains, compacted graphite iron block (the only production gasoline engine to use it), an aluminum ladder frame block skirt , that basically makes it a deep skirt block (and directly supports the main bearing caps), forged everything (pistons, con rods, crank, and cams) semi-open engine deck ( I call it semi-closed deck because there are 6 support points instead of the conventional 3 with semi-open) as opposed to the open deck 5.0 and 3.5 ecoboost, monolithic head and exhaust manifold (which means the exhaust manifold and turbos have coolant journals, which both speeds up engine warm up and reduces turbo and combustion chamber operating temperatures) and is just physically more compact (which inherently adds strength) with a very high lubricant capacity per displacement (2.22 qts per liter of displacement in a shorter block design vs 1.6 qts per liter in the 5.0l, and 1.7 qts per liter in the 3.5 [2.24 qts per liter in the 6.7 powerstroke] ) and overall, much fewer moving parts than the 5.0l v8. In 2018 and up, the engine has port injection to reduce intake valve, spark plug and injector fouling, electronic wastegates as opposed to mechanical, hollow cam shafts which reduce rotating mass, improve throttle response, efficiency, and theoretically put less strain on the timing chain, increasing service life. They are also stupidly easy to maintain, adopting the euro style top cartridge filter, a toolless oil pan plug, easy access valve covers, and just being very compact in the engine compartment. It's my opinion it should be the base engine in the F-250, as it's towing fuel economy is roughly equal, or sometimes better than the 5.0l for the same load, and it just utterly destroys the 5.0l in a truck application with that broad torque curve (the 5.0, especially the gen2 coyote, is quite peaky) As all direct injection engines go, and even moreso as it's forced induction with forged pistons (higher expansion rates forged vs cast) they do experience a fair amount of crank case intrusion from blow by, increasing fuel dilution of the engine oil. Max oil change interval I would suggest is 6500 miles, and less if you primarily drive short trips or tow often. Short trips don't allow proper warm up of the pistons, so seals will not get an opportunity to optimize. This situation is true for the 5.0l and 3.5 eco as well. Slightly less of a consideration on the N/A 5.0l simply because of it's lower cylinder pressures. Just treat it like a diesel, a diesel you can actually rev out and doesn't have 75 tons of emissions (reliability robbing) equipment bolted to it. Physically, it is the heaviest built engine available for the F-150, betraying the populous opinion of smaller displacement = weaker. The only TSBs that crop up with the 2.7 are limited lot supply and manufacturing defects, and not design issues. I might, daresay, that this is the best engine Ford has created in over 40 years. Maybe that's why it's the basis for most of their new product lineup. It's like the 289, they put it in everything.

@@cs1992 just made a run to around the Chicago area from Detroit and back. Running about 74-76 mph I was getting 26 mpg, then turned on the a/c for the trip back and still got 24.4. Can’t complain about that mileage

Man, don't sleep on that 2.7L. This engine is an under-the-hood powerhouse that's straight-up over-engineered. Picture this: a compacted graphite iron block-making it the lone gas engine to even go that route. It's got a sturdy foundation, thanks to four-bolt mains and an aluminum ladder frame block skirt, which gives it the beefiness of a deep-skirt block. Now, we're talking forged everything. I mean pistons, connecting rods, crank, and cams - this bad boy is built to last. Its engine deck? A unique semi-closed setup, sporting six support points instead of the usual three you see in semi-open decks. Way stronger than the 5.0 and 3.5 Ecoboost's open decks. It doesn't stop there. This engine has a monolithic head and exhaust manifold design. Translation: the exhaust manifold and turbos are water-cooled, which is game-changing for both engine warm-up and operational temps. What I really love is its compactness. It's got this inherent sturdiness and an incredible oil-to-displacement ratio, way better than the 5.0L and 3.5L. Plus, it's got fewer moving parts. No joke, it's a mechanic's dream-easy-access valve covers, tool-free oil pan plug, and top cartridge filter, just like the European models. After 2018, Ford stepped up their game even more. They added port injection to tackle fouling issues and swapped out mechanical wastegates for electronic ones. Hollow camshafts? Yup, they're in there too, reducing rotating mass for quicker throttle response and less strain on the timing chain. As for maintenance, treat this thing like a diesel that can actually rev. But, be mindful of the oil change intervals. I'd cap it at 6,500 miles, especially if you're hauling loads or making short trips. The only problems you'll see are occasional manufacturing defects, not design flaws. I'd go as far as to say that this might be Ford's best engine in four decades. No wonder they're using it as the cornerstone for their new lineup. It's like the modern-day 289; they're putting this thing in everything.

wow that's pretty well equipped for an xlt ! I have an 18 xlt 2.7 and I love it ! I'm at almost 60k miles with not a single issue. It is my daily and road trip vehicle. I do all my own maintenence on it. I don't do much heavy towing at all, I mainly use the bed to haul equipment or supplies. I have mine leveled on bilsteins, stock 18'' sport wheels, wrapped in 33'' BFG KO2s.

I've heard the 2.7 has less problems than the 3.5. I didn't know any better when I bought my 2.7 but I have no regrets. 80,000 miles, zero issues so far.

@@fernandezmaintenance1984 no its only a 6ft bed. I dont know if i'd recommend it over the 5.0 for a work truck, heavy load hauling i'd stick with a V8. If not then sure i recommend it, better on gas too.

2017 F150 STX 4wd Super Crew coming up on my 70k oil change, always had Tacomas, what I’ve found not the first problem, way more comfort than the Tacomas and better fuel economy, average 20.4 around the house, hard to hit 23 highway, but have got it a few times, usually more about 22.5. Really don’t tow much and lil Tacomas served me just fine, but really just so much more comfortable and fun to drive than my Toyotas, I do think the 2.7 is a stickler for oil changes and that’s where you find the secret to a sweet running truck and keeping the Turbos happy. My list of vehicles I’ve owned is far from stellar, but this has been by far the most satisfying vehicle that we’ve had and wife loves it too and grandkids love it, if you don’t to 10,000 lbs daily and just need a very useful truck, I say try a 2.7 equipped F150 think the tiny V6 will surprise you.

2.7 is a great motor. Plenty of power for the average owner. If you haul really heavy weight frequently then the 3.5 may be more suitable.

Bought a 2020 2.7 in April 2021. I love the thing. All the power I need and almost 20 mpg mixed driving and I am not a slow driver.

Speaking of ride quality, I drove a 4x4 and an Fx4 back to back, both 2021 and both with 20” wheels. My daughter and I were both in agreement that the Fx4 was a smoother ride.

I have a 2015 XLT F150 screw with the 2.7 ecoboost and absolutely love it. Plenty of power and acceleration with good fuel economy to boot. Interstate speeds (70 mph) with the AC on I get 24 mpg in calm air. I say calm air because a head or tailwind definitely affects your fuel economy. Best mpg in calm air at 55 to 60 mph was 27 mpg. I've never had any mechanical or electrical issues with my truck which I maintain under severe service intervals.

I have a 2018 2.7 with the 355 axle ratio. I also owned a 2015 with the 5.0 and 331, which is what most “off the lot” 5.0s have. The 2.7 is, or feels, much quicker. It also tows better imho because of the torque curve. Obviously, it does not have the tow rating of the 5.0, but it’s very calm, quiet and confident when towing within its rating. It has torque in all the right places. My old 5.0 screamed when towing, sounded good to me, but my family much prefers the silence of the 2.7. I’ve had zero problems with the engine, but many problems with electronic modules and I was one of the unlucky ones with a warped dashboard

I just towed a 6000lb camper trailer with a dirt bike in the bed, over the Sierra Nevada mountains. I was a bit worried before the trip, but it turned out to be a pleasant drive. The turbos and 10 speed really helps the engine be in a comfortable place.

I own a 2017 2.7 with 127k plus. 89 or higher octane mostly 91. Truck is a work horse and still has power and amazing response! Only have down rear breaks and two sets of tires. Oil is full synthetic Mobile 1 ! You can’t go wrong with the 2.7!

Fellas…. I know. I know. I went from a V8 to the baby 2.7… and all I’ll say is.. 100k plus miles and no issues at all. Normal at home maintenance. When I had the V8 it was great but it did have some issues in the 160k range. Also did normal maintenance on it, obviously. In my opinion, so far… the 2.7 is a steady reliable engine. Love the gas mileage also. Average about 18 mpg and I’m mainly city driving only commuting 25 min.

After owning a 2011 3.5 eco in roughly 2012 to 2016 , and recently purchasing a 2020 2.7 truck , the 2.7 feels right on par with the power. Probably because the truck is 700 some odd lbs lighter, but it feels very similar to me. I loved the 2011 but after replacing the drivers side turbo on it at 85k I decided to let it go and I knew that they would work the buggs out of this ecoboost lineup. No complaints about the 2020, excellent power and mpg I’m at 20 mpg lifetime never reset it from the day I bought it. It had 33k on it and still does it’s my family vehicle which doesn’t get used often but when it does it’s everything I need.

If you don't use your half ton for work better suited for a 3/4 ton, the 2.7 litre EB is all you need. I own a couple of all the three engines and by far my favourite is the 3.5 EB, followed by the 2.7 and then the Coyote. They're all great engines....... powerful, relatively fuel efficient, durable and dead nuts reliable.

What you might do in comparison is, if you can get ahold of one, do a video with the 3.3 v6 base engine. It's not as powerful as the boosted engines but people seem to sleep on it when it's still a very capable engine. There aren't very many vids about the 3.3 v6 probably because it's the work truck engine but for those who don't care to have all the tech ever, or just need the bed and don't need to do major towing, it just might suit some people and the fuel economy isn't terrible.

Ive owned all 3. So far impressed with the 2.7. Better built but i loved all 3. So far way more efficient and torque is there half the rpm but i would own any of them currently in the 24 2.7. 700 miles to E on a full tank is a nice feature

Happy you did a review on this F-150 XLT EcoBoost. My only dislike is the Chrome look on the exterior (not the biggest fan). This was actually the first trim model I saw on the new F-150’s (2021) with the bench seat.

I replaced my 17 Ram 5.7 Hemi with a 2020 F150 with the 2.7, no regrets. Plenty of power and capability for me. I prefer the column shifter. Always appreciate your unbiased reviews.

I had a 2017 2.7 for 3 years and loved the power. I was getting over 20mpg most of the time and even got 25mpg a few times driving 55mpg on long stretches. I'm back to a GMC with a 5.3 and the 2.7 feels so much faster.

no concerns with the "lifter problems" with the GM 5.3 and 6.2? You're aware of the 2021 class action lawsuit about the lifters failing causing cam and thus engine damage? BTW... this was with their active fuel management and dynamic fuel management engines however, what GM did was to eliminate the 'chip' that allowed the engine to drop cylinders however... they kept installing the same lifters.

I was given a 2.7 Lariat loaner while my 3.5 was getting warranty work and it delivered considerably better fuel economy than my 3.5. And the best part; had to pick up my camper and bring it home and that thing didnt even miss a beat. Only difference was, it stayed in 9th instead of 10th like the 3.5. Towing mileage was pretty close.

I just bought a 22 F150 XLT with the 2.7. I was originally going to go with the 3.5 but I heard about a lot of reliability issues and extra maintenance costs with the 3.5 over the 2.7.

@@user-ht6qq5nf8j The MSRP was $53,210 I believe but they added an additional markup of $2800 on top of that. But they gave me the interior and exterior protective coating spray that they apply at the dealer for that $2800. Every other Ford dealer in the area was $5000-$10000 over MSRP. So the total with tax and everything was like $59k-$60k.

@@dr._breens_beard I agree but I really wanted a pickup truck again. I’ve been forcing myself to drive little 4 cylinder gas saver cars as my daily drivers these past 4 years. Since I traded in my Ram Hemi because I was being cheap with gas. These gas savers don’t fit my personality. Nothing is more comfortable to daily drive than a pickup truck. So I decided to buy anyways despite higher prices.

I've had both 2.7 Lariat and 3.5 Platinum and I averaged approx. 2.5 mpg better overall with the 2.7 which I prefer. Great engine!

I just bought a new 2022 F150 SXT SuperCrew. I had a bit of a lemon 2020 SXT SuperCab and had a great 2015 F150 XLT with the 5.0. It is difficult to find a new 5.0 now days, they are very popular and more expensive than the 2.7 from what I've seen. I generally tune my cars and trucks and will do so with this one. My 2020 made 330rwhp/380rwtq SAE on 91 octane, a tune from 5 Star. My 5.0 was 360rwhp/370rwtq on E85. I love the low end tq of the 2.7 and the high end of the 5.0. To have both, would be great...oh yeah, the 3.5!!

The 2.7 if you search online for engine problems has fewer problems than the 5.0 or 3.5. The only problem I could find with the 2.7 is an oil pan leak which Ford designed a new oil pan for and carbon on the intake valves. They added port fuel injection along side the direct injection to keep the valves clean. The 2.7 uses a compacted graphite iron upper block which is used in their Diesel engines. Ford obviously built the engine for strength and reliability. With the current cam phasers problems they’re having with the 3.5, I think I would choose this engine. Hopefully the 2.7 will find its way into the redesigned Ranger.

The 3.5L was originally a N/A engine they slapped turbos on; the 2.7L was designed from the ground up to take boost. Like you said, much like a Diesel engine.

Love your reviews. I’ve had the Ford 5.0 and Gm 5.3 and 6.2 I know it’s anecdotal, but the guys I work with have had problems with the 3.5 (timing chains and turbos specifically. The two guys who have 2.7 trucks have zero problems and it’s hard to feel a “seat of the pants difference” when riding in them. That said, none of us tow more than 5000 to 6000 lbs in any of our trucks so we aren’t maxing them out. My next truck looks to be the Ford with 2.7.

All these 3.5 EB “problems”. I have two of them as personal vehicles and a fleet of them for the farms and the open pit mine. I’m beginning to feel left out cause I’ve had no problems with the trucks, let alone the engines. These trucks are worked hard, not babied. Beginning to think these “problems” are self inflicted. I know some people who should never be left around something mechanical…

The newer 2.7s have a wet belt driving the oil pump . The belt is in the oil! A failure point. The newer 3.5s have a timing chain driven water pump, so if you ignore the weep hole for the seal (which you probably will because it is channeled to the side of the engine not the front) it will puke into the oil promptly destroying the engine. Let's hear it for built-in obsolescence on the new designs. The new electronic brake booster refines the time proven idea of an inexpensive vacuum booster and replaces it with a new design to make sure you part way with over $1000 if it fails.

I own both a 2016 3.5 Ecoboost and a 2015 2.7 Ecoboost. The 3.5 Ecoboost is used to tow our food truck and do the daily work for that business and I use the 2.7 Ecoboost for my work as a site construction PM. On the highway I average 2-3 mph better with the 2.7 (21-22 mpg) than the 3.5 (17-19 mpg) Probably 2 mpg better in the city as well. Both engines have been extremely reliable. 2.7 Ecoboost has 180,000 miles and never a been in the shop for anything other than routine maintenance. Much lower fuel cost per mile on the 2.7 (~$0.13) vs the 3.5 (~$0.17), all other maintenance is the same price. I sure wouldn’t want to tow regularly with the 2.7. I would buy either again. Both have been fantastic, just need to look at your use case and buy according to that.

@@Oakleyworld Oil changes when at ~10,000 mile intervals, whenever the truck oil change alarm goes off. I use full synthetic Mystik JT-8 oil instead of the factory suggested partial synthetic. And I buy the cheapest gas I can get my hands on. Always E10 and generally unbranded fuel.

This is the F-150 I'd get, the 2.7L has proven to be a great near bulletproof engine since it came out in 2018, even though it's got the 2nd lowest tow rating aside from the 3.3L it's plenty for most people being able to tow between 8,900-10,100 lbs depending if you get a older one or newer one. I'd also get it in this XLT trim too, the torque on these engines be it from the 2.7L all the way up to the 3.5L is just crazy being able to nearly tow like a diesel with all the power down low where you want it putting the least amount of stress on the engine long term too.

I’ve owned a 3.5L (2013 Lariat) and a 2.7L (2020 STX) and my 3.5L was always at a 17MPG average. 2.7L always seems to land at a 21MPG average. So fuel savings do seem to be there for me but that may just be bc the 2.7L is just SO much newer lol. As far as performance, holy cow do I think the 2020 2.7L has more umph to it. But that could be the almost decade’s worth of progress 🤷🏼‍♂️

The 3.5 on a 35 gallon tank only got me 485 mile range on daily driving, city and highway. The 2.7 on a 35 gallon tank I get 625 mile range on city and highway. If it's just pure highway? 685 mile range. 😀😀😀

This thing is supposed to be a little rocketship. More power and torque than most V8s had 5-10 years ago and significantly lighter. If i was considering an XLT or Lariat, this is likely the motor I’d choose

You would be wrong considering a ecoboost. Now lets take into acount hp and displacement. The 3.5 ecoboost with twin turbos at 1 atmosphere of pressure or 14psi....that is forcing 7.0 liters of air per revolution through only 3.5 liters, now in terms of force and wear, what engine is under the most force when comparing the 3.5 ecoboost and the naturaly aspirated 5.0 engine? Which one do you think will last longer? Remember the ecoboost has high pressure fuel pump/fuel rail/direct injectors and 2 turbo chargers on top of that.

But I personally dont keep my vehicles over 100k miles, and there are plenty of reports that both the 2.7 and the 3.5 EB are robust enough to last 200k miles when properly maintained. I still wouldnt hesitate to buy one…

Pick the engine that’s right for you. In my experience, living in Canada, new engines will usually outlast the truck. I own a 5.0L but have owned a 3.5. Both good engines.

@@gradoisx2348 nobody asked which lasts longer. Which is more fun? Lol I love the 3.5 eco. more torque sooner than the 5.0s. Engines can be built for turbo stresses. The USA has lagged in turbo technology for too long. I will be selling at 150k miles and have no issues with any Ford engine options.

main thing is the 2.7 is built wit an iron block instead of aluminum more like a diesel engine will last long i think but jus torn between the 2.7 or 5.0 which one will last longer and since the new 5.0 comes wit cylinder deactivation that makes me lean towards the 2.7 i hate cylinder deactivation like the truck jus stops using 4 cylinders seems like problems waiting to happen ugh idk what to do

The 2.7 is way more fuel efficient than the 3.5. The efficiency of the 2.7 is enough reason to choose it if the towing and payload capacity suits your needs.

I was on the fence between the 5.0 and the ecoboost. I knew the 5.0 would sound great, tow well, but get consistently poor fuel mileage. I opted for a 2.7 ecoboost, even though I was dubious, and it tows our camper trailer flawlessly, and gets 21-24 MPG consistently when commuting.

I was in the same boat! I love my 2.7. The only thing I hate about it is the mirrors (2021), and I'd rather not have 20" rims. Other than that, love it. Just towed a 6000lb travel trailer over the Sierra Nevada mountains. It pretty much stayed around 2000-3000 rpm at 65-75 mph. V8 probably would have been 4000 rpm up that grade.

Had my 2.7 now for about 1 month and I’m coming from a 5.7 litre hemi . I was a little worried at first just because such a small engine for a truck and reliability scarred me so at 1 month can’t speak on that end, but if your worried about speed ? Don’t be !! This 2.7 is a rocket ship !! No joke it’s faster then all hell ! Put your foot down and your gone. The only difference is with the hemi when you were going fast you felt it ! Good feeling ! It’s like hammer down a nail with a sledgehammer and with the 2.7 it’s like hammering down a nail with a samuria sword 🗡

I have a 2017 2.7. 4 oil pans and 2 front cover reseals, 2 diff reseal, oh yea 2 sunroof repairs. Just turned over 40k. Never towed a thing. Runs great, just leaks.

I’m a 5.0 guy, but the 2.7 is a great engine and I’d consider it over the 3.5. I love the white and chrome XLT with the 302a. I have the 2017 version of this with the 5.0. I love some of The updates they gave the XLT packages, but I’ll ride out my 17 for a long time with these stupid prices these days.

But thats irrelevant cause i have a sedan now that was overpriced as is for having 100k on it which makes me honestly think that the age old "prices wont come down" on goods bullshit line will soon no longer apply to new trucks given how they are now fully out of reach, in a financial responsibility sense, (people still out here taking 84 month loans with 40k a year jobs) for the working lower and middle class.

The 2.7 is the most reliable engine choice for the F150 and it's built stronger than the 3.5 is. It also has plenty of power and it actually does average 2 mpg better than the 3.5 eco in real world driving. The 2.7 will definitely be my engine choice if I get a F150. I'm either getting a XLT FX4 supercab sport with the 2.7 or a Silverado RST doublecab with the 3.0 Duramax. Both are around the same price, but I'm leaning toward the Chevy because I love the fuel economy and smoothness of the I6 diesel and the new Silverado interior has leapfrogged the F150's. The 2.7 eco is also a great engine and it has a longing history under its belt than the 3.0 Duramax. Tough decision.

I have the 2019 2.7. it goes good, but I think 10 gears is too many. I think 8 would be the sweet spot. On the highway, I do appreciate the 10 speed. It is quiet.

5.0 or 3.5l. The problem is from what I have read the problem is the RPMs that these specs are measured at. Unless I misread it was over 4000 RPMs. I know the 3.5 is at 2200RPMs.

Have a 2016 2.7 with 83000+ miles. No issues it is fast, get 22-23 mpg on trips. I always use full synthetic 5-30 Mobil one. Change oil & filter well before recommended service. Also have a 3.5 echo boost. Prefer to 2.7 over the 3.5

I went to my ford dealership ready to buy a ford f150 but I change my mind very quickly , when I got there first car I saw was a ford maverick xl with the 2.5 and it was used it had almost 2k miles , went to see the sticker price on the window and it was for $42,455 , I went to see the f150's and every one of them has a "market adjustment price " even the used ones , I couldn't believe a used ford maverick xl the very lowest trim level would cost more than double MRSP, , what a ripoff , I have bought two cars at this dealership before but no more.

Just bought a 2022 3.5 just to use for 3-4 months till I can get a f250 hit the gas at a stop and the truck has 130 miles on it currently and blew both turbos and wastegate actuators smh and I told the salesman I want a 5.0 but I was desperate as I had a 19 2.7 and those turbos were burning oil from the turbos it was misfiring the cats where clogged and rear end was howling bad and it only had 40k miles and had the rear end and turbos replaced 2 times already and still problems maybe I’m just not meant to have a turbo vehicle lmao

Got a 2015 F150 Lariat w/ a 3.5L Eccoboost and I almost got the 2.7 but to my surprise I actually needed the 3.5L Eccoboost because I ended up towing my wife's car on a Uhaul auto transport. Ready for something different so I might get a Raptor.

@@donaldalderman2424 the 2.7 would have easily pulled a car and car trailer. With a ‘72 olds cutlass and a uhaul car trailer the total would be around 5700 lbs, and my 2018 2.7, 3.55 gear will tow up to 7700 lbs

Yes. The 2nd Gen 2.7 includes port and direct fuel injection to prevent carbon fouling, hollow camshafts for improved throttle response, and electronic instead of mechanical wastegates. Improvement in every way. I think they even make slightly more power as well. That said the first gen 2.7 is still a killer motor.

0-60 is very close in the 2.7 vs 3.5 tune the 2.7 it will walk a 3.5 but tune the 3.5 they become beasts but the better built engine and more mpg 2.7 is the pick for me.

2.7 IS better on fuel by quite a bit when driven normal they are amazing on fuel.9.3 to 9.7 tank after tank driving super good. Driving normal but nice about 10 to 10.2 then pulling boat 3000lbs with trailer easy I get 13.4 to 14. Super fast as any f150 with any of the motors 👍🏻

My 2021 F150 with the 2.7 is at the dealer with a bad tranny at 7500 miles. It did average 23 MPGs before the tranny blew.

I have a 2021 2 .7 with almost 5,000 miles and I think something is wrong with my transmission too. Very clunky and feels like it doesn't wanna shift. Every once in a while I will get a bang going into 6th on the throttle.

Maybe some cam phaser issues. Just take care of it and it’ll take care of you. GM has problems too. The lifter failures on the cylinder deactivation is a big problem for them.

I just bought a 2022 STX with the 2.7 and 3.73 gear set. Plenty of power, truck is a lot faster than I think a lot of people realize. Fuel economy is not even close to sticker though. 3500 miles on it and the best I've seen on the highway is 19 hand calculated. Around town 16ish. But its a truck, I can deal with it. And that's normal driving with no 0-60 runs. Biggest problem is the 10 speed. Picked up the dreaded shudder in 7th, 8th, 9th. That's really a shame too because the rest of the truck is pretty good. Rides and handles great and really quiet in the cab. Very comfortable driving position. However, that 10 speed is a deal breaker. Buyer beware. I'll probably trade mine for a 10 speed Chevy or the new Ram straight 6 twin turbo when it comes out later this year.

It’s the 3.73 gears then. I got a 2022 XLT with the 2.7 and 3.55 gears and I’ve gotten it up to 21 hand calculated and the outside temperature hasn’t even gone up yet where I live. These turbo motors lose a few MPG in the cold weather months. Once it starts warming up for summer that’s when the 2.7 should start to shine with the MPG. The 10 speed has bugs here and there. Mainly when it’s super cold outside and I just start it up and drive immediately and then decide to slow down to almost a stop it bangs into 1st gear on the first stop on occasion. Once the transmission starts warming up a little then it goes away.

Ford and Gm codesigned the 10 speed together, same transmission in both brand trucks now except for the turbomax which has the 8 speed

the best engine they have for the f150. Most reliable too since they put out the 2nd gen. Unless you tow it's the no-brainer choice

What is considered heavy hauling? For the 2.7. I plan on getting a camper that weights around 5,000lbs. Is that considered heavy?

No worries. Pay more attention to your truck's PAYOAD CAPACITY, that's what is going to limit you. Is the 5000 lbs your GVWR or your dry weight? I tow a Freedom Express that has a GVWR of 6000 lbs with my XLT and my payload capacity is 1760 bs.

@CW CW yeah the camper is around 4800. Dry weight. Just not sure if the 2.7 can handle that once a year i would camp.

@@markwheeler144 PAYLOAD CAPACITY is your limiting factor, not the Ecoboost engine. The 2.7 L EB will have no issues with that size RV. For example.... your tongue weight will be about 6000 lbs x12%= 720 lbs. Plus your passengers, gear, stuff in the bed of the truck, weight of the weight distribution hitch, etc, etc. It all adds up. Find out your payload capacity for your particular truck. It will vary depending on the model and options. Good luck

The issue with the 2.7 engine is the wet belt placed inside. Has anyone had issues with it?

2.7 is quicker IMO and better on fuel. So it comes down to are you towing heavy or not? If you are towing heavy go 3.5, if you aren't the 2.7 is plenty of engine for this truck.

Payload under 1,500 pounds is silly low. Going to need more like 1,700 to 1,800 pounds or more to tow anything decent.

Have a 2018 f-150 with the 5.0 and in no way would i ever change it for a dyson lol. Whoever says the 5.0 doesnt have low end torque is wrong and it kind of mis leading. If you gun it, it will light the tires up. If you ease off the line and then floor it the transmissin will sometimes prematurely upshift making it feel like it lacks in torque, dealer will remove skip shifting and it helps a ton. Ive towed 4- 5,000lbs and it did just fine. Got about 14 mpg and stayed under 3k rpms. Couple this engine with an exhaust and it makes you never regret buying the v8. Cant say that about the ecoboost! Im not knocking the ecoboost as i think they are plenty capable but it just wasnt for me. As far as this guy saying dont pay over MSRP and just pay sticker? WTF how is this even ok? My 2018 has a 51k sticker and i paid 34k new! How would dropping 17k more be ok in what world? People with this mindset are fueling the problem.

Lol its not 1993. There's a guy on the f150 forum that got 465k outta his 2.7 before he traded it in. Way more issues with the 3.5 and v8

Change your oil, it will last just as long. Plus, have you driven the 3.5l? It is a blast.

I had a '16 XLT with the 2.7 and an '18 XLT with the 3.5. 2.7 was fun to drive, more snappy in town. 3.5 was better on the highway above 70 in mpg. MPG overall was about the same, around 21.5. 2.7 was great until you get into the boost then the mileage suffered (obviously).

I got the 2.7 my Fuel economy was aiming but at 14,000kms its horrible now idk why. The 5.0 I think is the way to Go

The 2.7 is about the same as the 3.5 but a bit less power.. The 5.0 is a V8 engine so that is the most expensive and more power. I like my 3.5 V6.. 💘 love it!!

I have a 2014 f150 FX4 5.0.A dealbreaker for me on the 2.7 is the plastic oil pan and drain plug.Cost cutting by the engineers is one thing but that idea is simply brain dead.Here in Ontario Canada the 5.0 adds $4,000.As a daily driver the 3.3 is not so bad but as usual,Ford has opted the delete that one for 2024 I assume to justify added cost.The 2014 FX4 has been A1 and will repeat.

The 2.7 is great for light towing, but the 3.5 is better for anything else. The V8 was great, before the Ecoboost came out. The 3.5 is probably the best engine of the 3 though.

3.5 EB mpg while towing is complete trash. i tow 25 weekends a year and TBH wish i went with another silverado

I agree with you; the 3.5 EB is powerful, relatively fuel efficent and so so fast. All the EBs we've owned/own have been so reliable..... pleasure to own and drive.
