The teeth in the rear, in front of the spare tire, is a method to deflate the spare in the event of a rear end collision. That whole system acts as a "crush zone" to give greater protection to the gas tank, passenger compartment and battery ! Think of it as an airbag in reverse. The act of "deflation" absorbs the energy in a rear end crash. Simple, but effective !

These are the types of videos you just don't see before purchasing vehicles. This should be standard on any vehicle being sold anywhere. Consumers not only have the right to know, they 'should' know what they are getting. Well done video mate.

This kind of thing astounds me. I learned all my knowledge of engines through the aviation world. In terms of learning the vehicle one is operating, cars have so little technical information available in their manuals. Its all dumbed down to consumers, whereas in airplanes, you can really get into the weeds. Being able to put systems operations and troubleshooting into context makes all the difference in the world. Without sounding like a conspiracy theorist, I do wonder if limiting consumer access to tech info is a means to pushing consumers to just take their cars into authorized dealerships to maintenance instead of being able to do things themselves.

I was out in my Hybrid yesterday when it was 97 degrees. I pulled into a parking lot so my wife could run in for one item so I let the air conditioner run for the ten minutes it took for her to come back out. I like that the engine did not have to run for that amount of time while I sat there in cool comfort.

This is why I also like hybrids for delivery work. They just maintain themselves so you don't have to worry about the battery running down if you're listening to the radio. And if there's a long stretch between jobs you can take a nap and the vehicle will stay cool or heated and restart on its own when it needs some extra voltage to do so.

Agree with others - so many videos on seats and radios and cupholders ugh ! Yours gives the info I need. Thanks. I'm slightly dissapointed with Ford's choice to use 450V. I like the near 200-volt batteries on the Prius and others. For such a small battery, it seems a waste to use such high voltage. I noticed others calling it a lithium ion battery. I thought these were lithium iron phosphate - but not sure. The exhaust heat exchanger is good idea, IMO. In winter, these vehicles will need battery heating, and I suspect the engine coolant is not enough to heat both the cabin and battery. One other lost opportunity on front drive pickup trucks - the rear bed can be made really low - but for some reason, no manufacturer seems to think thats a good idea.
@lyndonthan4350

another reaon for liking the low voltage hybrid battery in the toyota's - its easier to add battery capacity to the hybrid. with 450V, this seems a bit more of an issue.

Looking at all the components underneath, at 22k Ford has to be losing money on every base Mav they build. Even the options seem cheap by today's standards. Ex, the hitch receiver and 4 pin wiring is only $100 upgrade. That would cost a lot more later. Inflation announced at 6.8% for last month so my bet is 2023 msrp has to go up at least that much. Eco version with similar hwy mpg can still be ordered. There are still dealers that will order for you at msrp.

The Hybrid is very very similar setup as the 2005 Escape Hybrid which was a solid platform.The only difference is the batteries. Escape used a nickel hydrid & the Maverick is lithium ion. The 2.0L has had its share of head gasket problems in the past that are "Supposed" to be resolved but time will tell.Even though the Hybrid is a lot more complex, I would have to lean toward it due to the solid performance of the old Escape

Why do we need to drive the coolant temperature UP ? Ok for emissions, yet what happens when the ambient temperature is very hot ? Does the coolant flow to above the cat have the ability to shut itself off ? On vehicles which have the optional 400W inverter for 120 volt ac outlet, (cab plus bed or cab only) just where might that be located ?
@RedneckCam666
@RedneckCam666 2 жыл бұрын
The heat exchanger in the exhaust is after the Cat & has a valve to bypass when too hot. The inverter is under the center consol
@db4z09
@db4z09 2 жыл бұрын
Engines and transmissions are generally more efficient with higher temperatures so getting them up to operating temp faster helps with efficiency. Lithium ion batteries also don't work very well cold. Once everything is at temp the electric water/glycol pumps and radiators should control everything to their optimal temperatures. The A/C compressor may even be plumbed to chill the coolant loop to the battery when needed as charging/discharging batteries at too high of temps degrades their life.

@SweetBearCub 2 жыл бұрын
You would assume wrongly. The hybrid has auxiliary electric heating elements built in (see fuse listing in owners manual) that actually provide some heat faster than the non-hybrid. They cover the time while the engine is heating the coolant, which the non-hybrids again, do not have. Also, heated seats and a heated steering wheel are an option on both engine types, and they provide fast heat as well.

that might all fine dandy but i'm still not convinced i would be happy with it when it's 10-15 below zero and the only real heat i fell is from the heated seats & steering wheel while the defrost is barely doing it's job... i will wait.

I don't expect there's that much difference. It's just a different sort of valve cycle. The explosive heat of running the engine is just as good as any other. My older hybrid doesn't use or need heating because it's a different battery technology. The Maverick is probably just needing to get warmth into that battery as fast as possible for it's health in colder weather.

With all the legacy 12V items, the battery may be a stability factor in balancing the accessories voltage whether you're using a few things or a bunch. They use similar connectors on all versions of F150 & many of the other models over the years ,they haven't been much of a problem

I'll bet it is. Probably covered by the emissions warranty though. I question what happens if you are in an accident and one of those 450 volt cables is severed? Bang, pop, sizzle.

New cars exhausts are made well they may get a little surface rust and stop rusting like cast iron does. Am sure it will never need replacement . Was looking what a new 1983 ranger pickup sold for . It was 6,400 dollars which would be like 18k today.. This is in the ball park of that price.

It wasn't clear from the video but it looked like there may have been a decent size open area above the rear axle. I've been wondering if there might be a provision to add a battery in that area in a future model to offer a plug in electric.

I can see a million things going wrong in ten years. I still prefer my 2002 ZX3 Manual Focus still running like new. Not Ford-bashing , Toyota hybrids are as bad if not worse. There is a Toyota expert channel where he tells you a myriad of things that can go wrong or to look out for that do not apply to a simple ICE-powered car.

People have been driving the first gen prius since the late 90s. My friend got rid of hers after the cat was stolen, but it was otherwise still working perfectly. The maverick should be no different in terms of all the extra hybrid stuff.

I'm glad I didn't get the hybrid. There's so much more going on than the 2.0 turbo engine. The hybrid is just too complicated

it doesn't have a 12v lead normal car battery? finally. An EV without that rubbish in the car. It's always been a weak part of an EV, they never seem to look after the 12v battery like a straight gas engine can. nice work Ford. unless I'm wrong and the battery is under the back seat.. which I was sure it was.

It still has a 12V battery, they relocated it under the rear seat. Sad you didn't watch the whole video

@@RedneckCam666 this is fine. the battery will stay dry and clean. I have than in my Miata (battery in trunk). it also makes it easy to run audio equipment power from this location.
