Both the #HyundaiIoniq5 and the Ford #MustangMachE are two of the newest and hottest electric SUV's on the market today. The #Ioniq5 offers up to 256 miles of range in this dual motor Limited trim, while the #MachE offers up to 260 miles on this GT Performance trim. The #Hyundai does charge significantly faster than the #Ford on a level 3 DC Fast Charger, but Ford fights back with a larger infotainment screen and features like wireless Apple CarPay and Android Auto.

Happy Weds everyone! We wanted to confirm that Hyundai has said an Ioniq5 N is coming in the future and we are looking forward to testing it and the EV6 GT later this year! If you didn't need the extra speed and wanted to spend about $57,000, would you get the Ioniq 5 or Mach E Premium trim?

Huge? No. A Chevy Suburban is huge. The Ioniq 5 is retro-futuristic hatchback/crossover that’s quite small on the outside though Tardis-like on the inside. I love them both but the underlying technology (350kW charging!) of the Hyundai is superior though the plug-&-charge of the Mach-E is a must have convenience feature shared with Teslas.

Nice overview. It would be nice to see reviews and comparisons where the "daily driver" needs are focused upon. You mentioned in your full review of the Ioniq 5 that you had it for the week, and since you own the Mach E, it would have been a great opportunity to show off the everyday utility of each and how they compare/contrast. For example, a typical daily routine of leaving the house (presumably with the car well-charged because you have it on your L2 overnight), driving 10-20 miles (20-30 mins) in stop-and-go city and freeway traffic, getting parked, and then running a few errands on the way home. You did the side-by-side acceleration test on the freeway, which is tantalizingly close to what I'm referring to. How are both to navigate traffic, both in acceleration and braking, as well as the traffic aids that can help you. The blind spot camera views that come up on the Hyundai's display when you activate the turn signal are pretty cool, and the speed-sensitive cruise control can make rush hour much more manageable. The summon feature of the Hyundai could be pretty handy for tight parking situations, but I never park in a tight situation, so I don't know how truly useful it would be for me. How is the visibility in each car? Can you turn on the cameras while driving, to see back, forward, and to the side? If you activate your turn signal when there is something in the way, is there an alarm of any kind to warn you? Fords commonly have the BLIS system, which just lights up a logo in the mirror when there is something there, but it would be nice for more, such as an audible alarm, display, and/or haptic seat warning. How big of a downside is the lack of the Mach E's magnetic dampers in cars that don't have them? That's a feature that seems like it would be really nice to smoothen out the ruts, bumps, and frost cracks of a common freeway and city street situation in the cold portions of the country, but did you miss it in the Ioniq 5 in your testing? So many questions, and I understand that there's only so much time to devote to each car, but maybe an idea for generating another video using the footage and notes you took and used for the other videos? If not, at least something to consider for the future...

The speed isn't all that important. Both have usable acceleration for merging and passing. The thing is, to me, the Hyundai looks more finished. More detailed. Tighter in its design. And the interior doesn't feature just a large tablet on the dash, it actually has a more of a car-like look to it. The Hyundai is more distinctive although the Ford is reasonably stylish. I'd likely go for the Hyundai if I had to choose but I seriously don't like crossovers. The one that feels least like a crossover would also be the one I favor.

Apples and oranges comparison. This is like comparing a Corvette with a Toyota Camry. A year ago I drove the Ioniq 5 and the all electric Ford Mustang. In my opinion, which is totally subjective, the Ioniq 5 won hands down, which is why I bought it. I can understand if you are a sports car enthusiast why you would go for the Mustang. The Mustang that I test drove had one pedal driving like Tesla. The Ionic 5 offers choices - one pedal as one of the options but you can decide how much regenerative braking to use, which is a great feature. My Ioniq 5 has incredible acceleration and it charges from 10-80% in less than 18 minutes every time. I love the styling. That being said, there is no right answer. It comes down to what you prefer. We are fortunate to have so many choices.

Great review. Seems like the Ioniq 5 would be a better road trip ev because of the fast charging. Almost comparable to filling up with gas from an empty tank. If you travel a lot, then the Ioniq 5 is the way to go.
@Cruor34
@Cruor34 Жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, the charger has to charge that fast. There is a review on the Mach E GT where both the chargers the guy went to on his road trip couldn't even charge at the Mach E max speed. Apparently, a lot of the charging stations out there suck. Also, I have a 26 gallon tank, which isn't huge, but it is large. It does not take anywhere NEAR 18 minutes to fill, so no, 18 minutes charge is not anywhere near comparable to filling an empty tank, it takes me 2-3 mins.

If these were the only EV's available and I had to pick one, I'd definitely go I5. I personally don't think you can go wrong with either. However my vote goes to the Mach-E - Ford really has delivered on a striking EV crossover despite of its name, and the GT trim has a ton of performance that Hyundai just doesn't have the answer to (yet). The Ioniq 5 has the advantage in the 800V fast charging architecture, but I far prefer the design of the Mach-E.

Is 800kwh charging even relevant at the moment? Where would you find a charging station that can offer that speed?

Actually, GM made the first affordable 200 mile plus of range car, also Motor Trend's Car of the Year: the Bolt EV. Now you can buy two for the price of one Model Y.

How long does the Ioniq take for delivery? I ordered my Mach E on Oct. 1 and still don't have it. It's at the dealers with a bad module and that's all I know.

This is going to sound weird, but the IONIQ 5's looks remind me of early 2000's Samsung products. Some elements I like (the headlights, taillights, overall shape), and others I absolutely hate (the gray pieces below the taillights just look cheap and busy - like they're trying too hard)

I agree. The Hyundai looks unique and interesting but just too plasticky and busy, it almost stresses me out looking at it - I also think it vaguely looks like an early-1980's Chevy Citation lol...

260 miles from full charge! That's awesome. Do you think it's comparable to the Tesla models? Is there any capacity that Tesla can get to that others cannot?

Fine comparo. Where I live in SW FLA the roads are flat, laid out in a grid, and have a traffic light every 100 yards, and they are all red. So 0-60 times dont come in to play, but cooled seats do. For those reasons and my preference for its retro style, my choice will be the Hyundai.

Elon AND Fords own big wig said that Hyundai is doing special things, Elon said Hyundai is doing electric cars right besides Tesla, and Fords big wig said it’s hard to not look at what Hyundai is doing if you want to get things right. That alone should make you’re decision for you. And remember these guys are review guys so they are buying because of looks or names, not for the smart reason. And this year just wait till the N version of the Ionic 5 comes out. It will blow the doors off of that Mach E GT

I am thrilled to see more and more electric only cars and trucks coming to the market. Grid sized battery storage is finally making it practical to store many types of energy from the sun, wind, geothermal, tidal and many more. Without getting into politics, we have to end the ways that oil and natural gas are used as weapons. Let everyone use gasoline and diesel vehicles for weekend fun trips, Sunday drives and incredible car shows in the parks with fun cars and coffee meetups.

The quirky styling of the Hyundai reminds me of how the Scion XB was ugly, but cool. That look doesn't last long and while it's edgy and cool now, the Mustang will age much better. I'm curious as to how the accelerated charging of the Ionic will work with battery longevity. Mach, might charge slower, but I think it will translate slower battery degradation. I have had different charging stations delivery radically different results with level 3 charging the Mach. I connected to a 350kW EA charger that charged the Mach around 118kW. I have only visited that charger once and delivered 37.3kWh to the battery in 26 min according to the charge log. At some point I need to drive an Ionic for comparison. I will say the Mach GT is a blast to drive and in the first month of driving it, I have found more reasons to like it than not to.

I think about rubber hoses that connect so much of the plumbing in the MachE, seems like an unnecessary future fail point. He almost made the point that you could put a longer nose on the vehicle and have more frunk space, I'd rather have the extra length in the rear.
