In this episode of MC Commute, we review the 2022 Kawasaki KLX300SM as we rip the roads and racetrack.
--
The only thing that keeps the 2022 Kawasaki KLX300SM from flying under the radar is the thin arcs of rear tire rubber painting a trail directly to the Motorcyclist HQ front doors. Simply put: Team Green’s unassuming small-bore supermoto uses darkies to brush a picture of a seriously good time on two wheels.
Built upon the versatile and capable KLX300 platform, the SM shares the same basic architecture as its dual sport and off-road siblings, but relishes in a number of supermoto-specific tweaks. The SM receives 17-inch spoked wheels, specifically tuned long-travel suspension, and a larger front brake setup, among other differences.
The KLX300SM’s light and nimble handling makes it an excellent around-town ripper. At a relatively low 304 pounds on the Motorcyclist scales with its 2.0-gallon fuel tank topped to the brim, the KLX is playful and easy to handle for even the less experienced riders. To add to that, an accommodating 33.9-inch seat and relaxed reach to its one-piece motocross-style handlebar promote a comfortable, yet in-control riding position.
That balance of lively personality and control is what translates to confidence in letting the 300SM hang loose. Utilizing decent feel of the KLX’s two-piston caliper clamping to a single 300mm disc up front and single-piston caliper and 240mm disc out back, while slamming backshifts through its well-spaced six-speed gearbox hacks the rear end sideways in true supermoto fashion with forgiving control.
Like the rest of its siblings, the KLX300SM is powered by a 292cc DOHC liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. Ran on our in-house Dynojet 250i dynamometer, the KLX produced a modest 24 hp and 15.6 pound-feet of torque, which makes for approachable delivery and versatile performance, especially in the tight confines of urban riding. And the KLX holds its own on the highway too. At California highway speeds, it spins with minimal vibration felt through the controls and with passing power left in reserve.
Let’s not forget the KLX300SM’s composure on the local kart or supermoto track. Approachable power characteristics and forgiving handling make spinning laps aboard it a hoot, with enough performance to hold its own against proper trackday machines. The ability to practice fundamentals and core riding techniques in a controlled environment is only a plus.
The KLX300SM is a small-bore supermoto with big potential. A smooth blend of approachable performance and pure entertainment at a relatively low cost of $6,199 make it a real masterpiece.

I started riding in 2003. Currently I have two bikes in my garage - a 2018 MT09, and a 2021 KLX300 Dual Sport. Even on the road, the KLX is a hoot! You can really wring its neck as you get around town having a blast. I couldn't agree with you more about the ABS for true beginners - if Kawasaki had given it switchable (at least in the rear) ABS, then it'd be almost perfect. A new rider might panic when the rear wheel locks up relatively easily and that could cause issues. Great review!

@@zed5129 it’s well worth it. I’ve had both and that new fuel injected KLX300 is even more gutless than my now gone 2009 KLX250s apparently. Plus, the DRZ-400SM has loads more torque that is quite noticeable. It just lacks a 6th gear, fuel injection and a modern headlight. The KLX is a pooch, zero power or torque. Ride one, you’ll see. But it does LOOK cool.😁

It really is fine the way it is. It will wheelie, stay ahead of normal traffic, go interstate speeds, and is light. How much more weight will a 500cc bike bring since other components might have to be beefed up to handle the additional power, acceleration, and subsequent weight.

Stay away from both. Buy a Yamaha WR250R and don’t look back. Buy SM rims for it. The KLX is a poochy dinosaur from the early ‘90’s. The DRZ is carbureted and cold blooded. It also needs a 6th gear something awful.

Get the Dr.Z. the WR is gutless compared to the 'Zuki', and with almost 40 horsepower you can gear the Dr.Z to fit highway or trail riding. Guys ride 15/39 gears on the highway swear by it. Other pros even run 16/39 getting the bike to over 100mph, but they admitted they had to clutch more on the single track stuff. My buddy has has his for 12 years. He's got 40k miles and has driven that bike across the US on the freeways, and competed in the Baja 500 with it - all pretty much stock. He finally sprung for the FCR this year lol.

I took this bike for a spin a few months ago at a Kawasaki demo day. I've owned Kawasaki Ninja 1000's, downsized to the 2020 Ninja 650 KRT. This bike just puts a permanent smile on your face. Our lead rider was going through a yellow light and changed his mind last minute. So much so that he stopped completely sideways! I ended up doing a stoppie! The trail instructor pulled up to me, gave me a thumbs up and a smile. The front brake on that thing is awesome. I didn't panic. It was just grabbing and grabbing. The tires were very tacky. Definitely getting one. I might just get rid of the Ninja 650 for this. The are already bag options from Hepco Becker. I'm a daily rider so even a set of Koso heated grips (don't laugh). Maybe an IBS oversize tank. This bike is a winner and won't be sitting on a showroom floor.

I doubt you'll notice that, even side by side. I'd hazard a guess, the 300 has better torque figures and an even less stressed motor. That should mean, longer service intervals and longer life, one would hope. Also a great reason to fit a filter and end can. should get most of that 3hp . This could do with a better exhaust note anyway. Zero brap, is more the issue imho 😁

I traded the WR250R for the KLX300SM. Power feels similar on both. CG feels lower on the Kaw and it feels lighter when riding, very eager to turn, super nimble. I like that its a lot easier to get feet on the ground too, flat footing at 6 ft tall.
